Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player: $100, this Friday, Wal-Mart

October 31st, 2007 by

Still waiting to jump into the high def disc game? Or just wanted another weaker, cheaper player for the last-gen TV you phased out to your rumpus room? Well, whatever your reasons, some (not all!) Wal-Mart locations will be selling Toshiba HD-A2s for $100 — down from $200 — this Friday. Ridiculous, we know. Blu-ray gonna fight back? We hope so, we’d really like to get our hands on one for under $300, and not just by using our hookup that sells gear out of his trunk, you know?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Highlights include a 2.81-inch external touchscreen, VibeTouch tactile feedback support, V CAST Mobile TV, dual integrated speakers, a two-megapixel camera, microSD expansion slot and VZ Navigator preloaded. If you’ve undoubtedly got this one on your must-have list, hit the read link and eat your heart out.

Jessica Simpson and Owen Wilson spotted together

October 31st, 2007 by

A spy for Star magazine spotted Jessica Simpson and Owen Wilson out together over the weekend. The two met on the set of a Willie Nelson video a few weeks ago and seem to be hitting it off, according to NY Daily News:

The two dined Sunday at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica before retiring to his Malibu home.
“He couldn’t keep his hands off her,” a witness tells the mag.

Don’t you dare break his heart, Jessica. That man’s been through a lot. What he needs right now is someone to make him appreciate the good things in life. Why, yes, your breasts would be one of those good things. I mean, I wasn’t going to bring them up unless you did. Your dad does it all the time? Ha, that is funny. You are funny. Say, you want to get a drink? Oh, don’t worry about Owen. He’ll be fine. He does great with rejection.

Folding@Home recognized by Guinness World Records

October 31st, 2007 by

Finally getting the street cred that its creators have so long desired, the PlayStation 3-based, distributed computing network known as Folding@Home is to be recognized by Guinness World Records. According to the group, the network is now the most powerful distributed computing cluster in the world. The system, which utilizes the power of more than 670,000 PS3s to crunch data, has overall computational capabilities greater than a petaflop (which is a ton of flops). The linked consoles tackle a number of tasks, and scientists harnessing the network’s power are able to study complex medical problems — such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s — much more quickly. Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and head of the Folding@home project says, “Without them [the Folding@Home users] we would not be able to make the advancements we have made in our studies of several different diseases.” Now that Guinness has recognized the system, it can proudly stand next to luminaries such as the man with the longest fingernails, and fastest land animal.

Heroes: Origins dead?

October 31st, 2007 by

Variety is reporting that NBC pulled the plug on Heroes: Origins because of the possible Writer's strike.

The side project for Heroes is dead like Claire for the time being. Meaning as this point it is like a piece of wood in her head as long as it is in there she is dead, but pull out the stake and she is alive.

Heroes: Origins had names like Kevin Smith and Eli Roth attached, but that was not enough for the NBC, who is having financial problems due to falling ratings, to save the the side project for now.

While NBC is not saying it is officially dead, but once they kill something it is more like Issac Mendez's death than Claire's. But I am rooting it is more like Claire's and NBC will pull the stake out soon.

Samsung’s F700 to arrive on Verizon as SCH-U940?

October 31st, 2007 by

Filed under:

Verizon Wireless customers, you may want to sit down for this one. Samsung’s oh-so-sexy SGH-F700, which is currently thrilling quite a few Vodafone customers, could be headed to The Network — and soon. According to Phone Arena, the Verizon variant of the F700 will be dubbed the SCH-U940, but actual details beyond that are scant. We are told that the unit will boast a 440 x 240 resolution touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard and a two-megapixel camera, but beyond that we’re left to wonder. No worries though, as the phone will reportedly be landing “in a few months,” so keep your eyes peeled, cool?

Eye-Fi hands-on, impressions

October 31st, 2007 by

You may have seen the Eye-Fi, launched this week, nearly a year and a half since we first heard about it. If you’re just catching up on the news, it’s basically a WiFi-enabled SD card (and accompanying web service) used to transparently and wirelessly transfer photos from your camera to your computer and/or a variety of photo sharing sites. Sounds like a great idea in theory, it turns out that the Eye-Fi is, in its current release, an answer seeking a question. Read on.

Lance Bass got married for free drinks

October 31st, 2007 by

(photo from Lance Bass' MySpace)

Lance Bass told E! News that he married his girlfriend of the time (back when he was in) for like 5 minutes in Vegas around the turn of the century.

"People do stupid things in the heat of the moment. I've been in Vegas where I've gotten married for, like, five minutes," he said. "No one talks about that though."

"You know it was one of those crazy moments where you're with a friend and you're like 'Hey, wouldn't it be fun if we did this?' and that's all that happened. It's the Vegas thing to do."

"In fact, the only reason we did it is because we wanted to get free drinks all night. And we didn't get one. We're like, 'We just got married!' They're like, 'Ah. Whatever.' "

He did not tell them the name of his ex-wife, who is still a friend of his or how they ended their marriage. I wonder if they consummated the marriage…oh wait that was probably how they got it annulled.

You know I actually commend him for doing that, I would love to do something wild like. But with my luck, I would meet the one guy who would think the marriage was for real.

DWTS’s Jane Seymour is doing better

October 31st, 2007 by

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

This week on DWTS

Yesterday, when I went to work I was so convinced that I was going to be leaving the show that I had my bag packed. But I can't believe the unbelievable, extraordinary support from the fans and I am just so grateful. I've never been involved in anything remotely like this before and I've been having the best time of my life. I just want to tell everyone how grateful I am for letting me do at least another dance or two.

Last night I was bounding off to rehearsal, I couldn't wait to be doing the show and I was in a really good mood. I was just thinking about how much I've learned from the judges, how much I've learned from being in this competition, how grateful I am to have been able to go as far as I had. Then I got the most terrible stomach pains, stomach cramps. I tried everything to get better. I took all the over the counter things. I had very bad attack of food poisoning. I hated the fact something dramatic was happening and I hated the fact I couldn't be on the show, but I literally couldn't even sit up or stand up or do anything. Last night has been pretty tough. I've had an enormous amount of pain, but it seems to have subsided now, so clearly it was an isolated incidence of food poisoning and everyone's told me I am fine and nothing to worry about.

I am, as everyone was, completely stunned that Sabrina was voted off. I consider her to be an extraordinary dancer, a really lovely girl. I looked to her to learn about dance, to learn about so many things. But when I saw the way she handled her elimination, I realized that this is a young woman with extraordinary maturity, extraordinary poise. She handled the situation better than anyone I can ever imagine. My heart goes out to her, what I do know for sure, in my heart, is that she is going to become a huge star and have a major fan base for the rest of her life because she is a very special young lady.

Glad she is doing better! Let's see if she will be able to do two dances on Dancing with the Stars next week.

Wireless ECG patch developed

October 31st, 2007 by

Filed under:

There’s nothing fun about wearing a medical device on your person 24/7, so Belgian nanotech specialist IMEC is trying to minimize the discomfort of those folks with heart conditions who require constant monitoring. Still several years away from a commercial release, the company’s flexible, wireless electrocardiogram patch — also capable of serving as a dedicated heart rate monitor — sends ECG or EMG (muscular) data in a continuous stream to either a PC or data logger for later downloading. The 175mAh battery is said to last an entire day in regular mode or several days when collecting only heartbeat data, a boon to the active lifestyle crowd for which this product is intended.

Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader delayed until end of the year?

October 31st, 2007 by

Although it hasn’t had the buzz of some other longstanding rumors, we’ve been heard a lot about Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader over the past year — everything from shady pics to tagged content to a supposed October 15th ship date, which came and went with nary a peep from the etailer. Now Brad Stone at the New York Times — who predicted that ship date to begin with — says that his sources have told him that the Kindle has been delayed (shocking), but will still make it out by the end of the year. Stone also says Amazon is still perfecting the service and wants to have as much Kindle-ready content (Kindling?) available at launch as it can — and that the built-in EV-DO modem will pull down content over Sprint’s network. That’s news to us, but until we actually see this thing we’re going to take our Kindle with a large grain of salt.
