The BlackBerry Storm ad that might have been

February 26th, 2009 by

This, shall we say, confrontational BlackBerry Storm ad by NY ad agency Guava has been making the rounds today, depicting a blackberry “bullet” taking a violent path through a familiar-seeming piece of fruit. An anonymous source told us that RIM considered it but eventually got cold feet — and we can understand why. Nonetheless, it’s an awesome bit of smack, so hit up the break and check it out for yourself.

[Thanks, Michael]

John Lennon eerily returns to push OLPC cause

December 28th, 2008 by

John Lennon may have departed this planet 28 years ago, but that’s not to say he can’t still have an impact. With the assistance of technology and the consent of Yoko Ono, the heralded Beatle has returned in a new OLPC spot. In the ad, the late musician proclaims: “Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want.” If this sounds like just the inspiration you needed to get your donation on, hop on past the break to see the vid in its entirety.

IMMI tracks ad exposure / effectiveness via cellphone, trips privacy alarms everywhere

October 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hunker down and find that tin foil cap, pronto! Privacy advocates, we’ve a new target for you to bang on: Integrated Media Measurement. The 4,900-person media research company is looking to take advertising measurement to a whole new level (or new low, as it were) by embedding tracking modules within cellphones. In short, the module picks up audio from ads and records information about the exposure; in the future, if you were to purchase whatever product you heard about (like seeing a movie that was plugged), it would register a hit and deem you a sucker. As of now, the only testers with these freaky phones are individuals who signed up for this stuff, but you better believe major marketing firms (and TV / movie studios in particular) are perking their ears up and begging to know more.

Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” ad gently alights upon the airwaves

September 18th, 2008 by

Microsoft started airing its new “I’m a PC” advertisements on TV this evening, giving Mr. Seinfeld a bit of a rest while it faces Apple’s campaign head-on. It’s very touching “we are the world” kind of stuff: smug-free, heart-string-tugging and so forth, but basically it boils down to 100 points for zero Justin Long, minus 100 points for zero John Hodgman. The ad is embedded after the break.

Update: YouTube version added for the Silverlight-averse. Also, is it just us, or does Microsoft’s Hodgman-clone kind of look like Paul Dano? Just something to think about.

Mildly frightening Verizon promo video gets employees hype for BlackBerry Storm

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey, bet you’d like to know that Verizon Wireless’ Mike (you know, from Minute with Mike) thinks the BlackBerry Storm is going to “crush the competition.” He also expects his sales team to “take the world by storm.” He also states that this handset’s screen is “built to be the most responsive of its time.” Oh, but he totally neglects to mention a price and / or release date. Thanks Mike. Thanks a lot. Full mind-numbing episode is after the jump.

Touching tale of heartbreak promotes Lenovo S10, rends our hearts in twain

September 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While we’ve been dealing with short-form ad fare in the States, China’s gone all artsy on us, with Lenovo releasing a short film to promote its S9 / S10 netbook. We won’t ruin the plot for you — the dialogue is all in Chinese, so it’s not like we could — but suffice it to say that the Lenovo S10 and unrequited love play major roles.

[Thanks, Patrick]

Screen Grabs: jerkface Verizon FiOS guy brandishes a Kindle

September 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Yeah, we know a Screen Grabs about a commercial about technology is kind of cheating, but there are a couple of gaffes to point out here. First, Mr. Smug Surfer-Do “I Was In A Band But We Split Up Over Creative Differences” Verizon FiOS Guy is a total jerk, so we’re totally rooting for the Zach Galifianakis look-alike, even if his bandwidth might suck. Second, waving a Kindle around might make you look like you rock at your job, but we’re guessing a paper clipboard is about 100 times more functional for the actual task, unless you’re supposed to read self-help books to your customers. Bitter cable users who can’t get FiOS yet unite!

[Thanks, Don R.]

Poll: Is Microsoft’s new ad working?

September 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

By now you’ve probably watched the Bill Gates / Jerry Seinfeld Microsoft ad a dozen or so times (if not, get to it). If you’re like us, you’ve got a healthy conversation happening about what the new campaign means, and whether or not you actually like the thing. According to a leaked internal email from Redmond’s senior vice president Bill Veghte, this first installment in what will be a series of commercials is meant to function as an “Icebreaker to reintroduce Microsoft to viewers in a consumer context.” It seems that the company is following the path they’ve stamped out with their previous media burst, the Mojave Experiment, which appears to be less concerned with changing the product (Windows), and more concerned with changing consumers’ perception of the product. In Veghte’s words, “Telling our story means making significant investments to improve the way consumers experience Windows.” So here’s our question to you: is Microsoft on the right track here? Let us know in the poll below! (You can also read the full text of the email after the break)

Seinfeld and Gates pair up for intense shoe-fitting session, cryptic advertisement

September 4th, 2008 by

Filed under:

As promised, Gates and Seinfeld made their television pair-up debut tonight, in an advertisement for something or other. We were sad to see Seinfeld sans-bee suit, and Gates is lacking in Costanza-isms, but we might just be looking at a beautiful friendship here. Video is after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Microsoft enlists Seinfeld, Gates to battle “Get a Mac” ads

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/microsoft/Microsoft_enlists_Seinfeld_Gates_to_battle_Get_a_Mac_ads’; Those Apple “Get a Mac” ads have long been an annoyance to Microsoft and to Bill Gates in particular. No surprise as an emboldened Apple with rising market share has continued to ratchet up the venom in quips like, “fear of switching is the foundation of customer loyalty for PCs,” found in its latest TV ad. Now Microsoft is fighting back.

Microsoft’s new $300 million campaign (one of Redmond’s largest ever) is set to launch with a $10 million assist from “key celebrity pitchman” Jerry Seinfeld. Yes, Bill Gates will appear as well — the once maligned, rich corporate nerd turned adorable, rich humanitarian nerd. The campaign is said to based on the idea of “Windows, Not Walls,” stressing the need to “break down barriers that prevent people and ideas from connecting.” Something we think open-sourcers might have a laugh at. Anywho, the immediate goal of the campaign is to reverse the negative public perception of Vista and thus incorporates elements of the Mojave Experiment. While we have doubts about the latter, the combination of Seinfeld’s pithy observations with a bit of that Bill Gates, self deprecating humor seen in “Bill’s Last Day” could be a winning combination. Whether that turns the slow moving boat of public opinion remains to be seen.

OMDM’s movable E-K50 II LED display is Big Brother’s best friend

May 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Just like a George Orwell flick gone awry, OMDM’s movable E-K50 II LED display is downright frightening. The gargantuan display is basically one with a car, and it comes complete with built-in speakers to really get the message across. We can hear it now: “Please deposit your mobile communication devices here, telepathy is the new unlimited plan.” Yikes.

HTC reveals US marketing push

April 22nd, 2008 by

Marketing its wares straight to consumers is old hat for HTC in the Old World, but stateside? Not so much. That’s not to say the HTC name is a total unknown in North America; there’s been the odd Advantage here and Shift there, but by and large, we yanks know the Taiwanese firm better for its relatively anonymous efforts in the likes of the AT&T Tilt, Verizon XV6900, Sprint Touch, and countless other carrier-branded devices. That’s about to change, though, with a full-court press of TV, print, outdoor, and online advertising targeted squarely at the US market launching this week. The company’s first ad in the campaign is posted to YouTube — no new products here, sadly, but it’s an encouraging sign to see that one of the world’s most prolific ODMs and smartphone manufacturers now thinks that the American market is mature enough to be dealt with directly. The announcement of the US-spec Touch Dual was a good start, and now, we look forward to seeing a whole heck of a lot more where that came from. Check the first commercial after the break.

Interactive windows dare you to catch a Scion tC RS 4.0

April 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh sure, we’ve most certainly seen window-based advertising used to lure the untrained eye to any manner of wares, but Scion’s latest iteration certainly takes interactive promoting to new heights. In order to market its limited edition tC Release Series 4.0, it partnered up with InWindow to cover a series of street-side windows with bubbles which reacted to movements made by captivated individuals walking by. Granted, the installation isn’t nearly as addictive as say, trying to wrangle up every single Pokémon, but it definitely managed to hold the attention of a few geeked-out civilians. Check it out for yourself, the video’s right after the jump.

Lenovo X300 ad takes the MacBook Air head-on

March 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Pencil thin laptop? Check. Floating with drop shadow? Check. Catch phrase in Helvetica Light? You bet. “Thinnovation” may have become “The art of thin,” but there’s no mistaking the implication of this new Lenovo web ad for the ThinkPad X300. “No-compromise” and “Everything else is just hot air?” Them’s fightin’ words.

[Thanks, Amerist]

Nintendo’s DS Lite retrofitted into MacBook Air ad

February 18th, 2008 by

It’s hard to deny that Apple’s MacBook Air advertisement is pretty catchy, and while the DS Lite doesn’t exactly pull off the whole envelope exit quite as elegantly as Cupertino’s latest lappie, it doesn’t do a half bad job representin’. In the spoof waiting for you after the jump, you’ll see a black DS Lite retrofitted into the MBA spot, and while the text, lighting and overall smoothness isn’t on par with the original, at least the music is spot-on. Click on though to see for yourself.

Dell launches star-studded “Yours Is Here” ad campaign

November 21st, 2007 by

Filed under:

There’s nothing like a little B- and C-list star power to get your holiday offerings the bump they need to bounce out the door, right? Check in with Dell’s shameless “Yours Is Here” promotion, wherein you can pick from an array of celebrities (Ice T, Burt Reynolds, Vivica Fox, Brooke Burke, Estelle Harris, or Chuck Liddell), and get their flash-avatar to pitch your product of choice to friends and family. Sounds like a hit, right? Well, only if you think a stiff, unhappy-to-be-here Burt Reynolds can sell your girlfriend on a laptop purchase better than a dozen roses and a cut-out of a Dell circular can. Point your browser in the direction of the read link, and hear all the tongue-in-cheek action for yourself.

TiVo looks to serve up demographic data to marketers

November 8th, 2007 by

Don’t you dare criticize TiVo’s ad collecting / disseminating department for slacking off, as just months after it launched StopWatch to offer up second-by-second viewing data, the company is planning to also hand over demographic information about its customers. The move is certainly likely to shift TiVo into Big Brother’s list of most highly-regarded outfits, as the information that will soon be shared with advertisers (we’re hearing it may be opt-in only, however) includes “age, income, marital status and ethnicity.” There’s no telling how much coinage TiVo will be raking in for such detailed data, but at least willing users can now watch intently knowing full well that they’re letting it all (and we mean all) hang out.

Update: Turns out this is indeed an opt-in program. Thanks, Jake!

International Robotics welcomes multilingual Millennia robot

October 11th, 2007 by

We’ll be straight: Millennia certainly isn’t the easiest robot on the eyes, but apparently it can hold a conversation like no other. According to its maker, International Robotics, this adult-sized, multilingual creation can “communicate with any age, social, ethnic or cultural group in any type of environment.” As if those bold claims weren’t enough, the WiFi-equipped bot can also “act as an effective PR, marketing, advertising, promotional, educational or entertainment tool,” and it can be remotely controlled in case you just don’t trust it to shoot from the hip. No word on pricing just yet, but we’d imagine this fellow could practically sell itself.
