Mitsubishi’s i MiEV electric car to be tested in California

August 8th, 2008 by

Mitsubishi’s i MiEV electric car has spent some serious time on the streets of Japan, but before long, the fuel-shunning vehicle will be roughin’ it here in the US of A. The auto maker is teaming up with Southern California Edison and PG&E in order to see how it fares in LA traffic and how to best integrate it with the power grid. As of now, the whips should be cruising down the carpool lanes in Q4, though a few modifications may be needed in order to comply with US laws. Plans are to test the i MiEV for three solid years, and hopefully the $30,000 ride will be made available for purchase shortly thereafter (or earlier, if we’re fortunate). What now, MINI?

Hyundai readies Elantra LPI Hybrid for 2009 Korean launch

July 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

‘Tis a shame we North Americans, Europeans, Australians, et al. won’t be seeing the Elantra LPI Hybrid in 2009, but those in South Korea have a reason to celebrate. Hyundai is gearing up to launch the company’s first LPG-electric hybrid vehicle next July, which also happens to be the planet’s first hybrid vehicle to be “powered by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and adopt advanced Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) batteries.” Said automobile will pack a 1.6-liter Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) Gamma engine, a 15kW electric motor and a continuously variable transmission, and while the outfit isn’t releasing hard mileage numbers just yet, the car should prove to be around 50% cheaper to operate than a gas-only Elantra (pictured). C’mon Hyundai, we know you’ve got plans to take this thing worldwide — just let it out of the bag already.

Subaru features STELLA electric car at G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit

June 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

With just about every other automaker on the planet champing at the bit to showcase its newest electric prototypes, Subaru’s doing its best to hang on to the briskly moving bandwagon. Said company has just recently announced that its plug-in STELLA concept will be showcased at the upcoming G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, and four of the five on hand will actually be used to “transport government officials and other participants” while the other offers itself up for test drives. The four-seat vehicle in question utilizes the same EV (electric vehicle) system employed in the R1e, suggesting that it can cruise around 80-kilometers (50 miles) on a full charge and hit a top speed of 100km/h (or just over 62mph).

Mercedes-Benz aiming to ditch petroleum by 2015?

June 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While Audi is over there planning to produce an electric car within the next decade, Mercedes-Benz is hoping to be completely petro free within seven years. At least that’s the word according to a recent report in The Sun. Dr. Herbert Kohler, who is responsible for Mercedes’ advanced engineering, has reportedly suggested that “by 2015 motorists will have switched almost completely to alternative fuel cars.” In order to make sure it’s not left out, the automaker already has an electric car in the works for 2010 as well as plans to use its DiesOtto engine which will give motorists the ability to use biofuels should they choose. Still, aiming to phase petroleum completely out of its lineup by 2015 sounds overly ambitious from here, but we certainly won’t complain if it achieves said goal.

Topia shows off 330-pound HUVO electric car

June 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Compared to the other single-seat electric vehicle that we had the misfortune of laying eyes on recently, Topia’s HUVO looks just magnificent. This clearly minuscule road warrior, which officially tips the scales at 150-kilograms (or just over 330-pounds), holds one lucky motorist and a small briefcase (if you’re lucky). Reportedly, the frame is constructed from high-tensile steel plate, the doors and the back panel from aluminum alloy, the roof from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the windshield from polycarbonate and the interior / wheels covers from ABS resin. Your guess is as good as ours when it comes to crash test ratings, but we suppose we should wait and see if this thing even sniffs the commercial market before worrying over that.

Electric Mercedes-Benz coming in 2010

June 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Unlike Audi and friends, Mercedes has actually had its eye on non-gasoline burning vehicles for some while. According to a recent interview, Daimler’s chief executive was quoted as saying that an “electric Smart [was planned] for 2010,” and he continued by asserting that an electric Mercedes model would be arriving “the same year.” Sadly, he didn’t budge when pushed for pricing details, but he did note that cost would depend greatly “on whether it sells the batteries or leases them.” Heck, there was even a mention of a fuel cell car in 2010, but we’d prefer to keep our hopes and expectations well beneath the stratosphere.

Crystals hold promise of affordable solar energy, may have been purchased on eBay

May 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We have no real way of verifying whether or not these so-calls crystals were purchased alongside some bizarre time machine on eBay, but we’ll take this guy’s word for it and assume not for the time being. Reportedly, University of Queensland professor Max Lu has teamed up with researchers in order to grow “the world’s first titanium oxide single crystals with large amounts of reactive surfaces.” Put simply, these very crystals can “absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity.” It’s said that Lu has been working on the project for some 15 years, and even now, he doesn’t expect the creation to be commercially viable for another decade. Aside from morphing into fairies and making dreams come true, the things could also be used to “purify air and water.” Pair this up with an invisibility cloak and we’ll really be in business.

[Thanks, Brendan]

E-Fuel’s Micro Fueler creates Ethanol from sugar in your backyard

May 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Far from being the first at-home biofuel kit we’ve seen, E-Fuel is hoping to target consumers with a hankering for fueling up their vehicle with homegrown goodness. The Micro Fueler claims to be the first backyard Ethanol brewer made specifically for use at one’s abode, and according to the outfit’s CEO, the premise behind it is quite simple. By mixing water, sugar and yeast, individuals can receive E100 Ethanol in a matter of hours. More specifically, it’s noted that a gallon of fuel can be derived from ten gallons of sugar, and while that may not sound like the most efficient conversion rate in the world, the company is quick to point out that costs can be lowered via federal, state and local credits along with carbon trading coupons. Those eager to start fueling up before they even leave the house can order one now for $9,995, though we’re told not to expect shipments until Q4.

California man builds his own solar-electric vehicle, good looks be darned

April 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Although Brent Hatch’s homegrown solar-electric whip looks eerily similar (read: just as ugly) to the SUNN solar car kit, this one was actually created without the help of any pre-packaged parts or sophisticated schematics. After his gas bill rose well over $700 a month (he and his wife have seven kids, after all), he decided to purchase a rather unsightly eight-seater bicycle and figure out a way to enable roof-mounted solar panels to power an electric motor. Nah, the top speed isn’t very impressive, and you certainly wouldn’t want to head out on I-5 with it, but it sure makes picking up the offspring from their nearby school a whole lot less painful on the wallet. Check out the video in the read link for more.

InnovaTek’s hand-sized microreactor converts liquid fuel into hydrogen

March 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While oil prices continue to soar to new heights, the gurus at InnovaTek are peering into the future. After years of work, said company is finally testing its hand-sized microreactor that can reportedly “convert virtually any liquid fuel into hydrogen, producing a portable hydrogen stream for use in adjoining fuel-cells.” In a perfect world, the technology would come built-in to vehicles, where we’d bypass the dangerous act of transporting hydrogen and instead convert biodiesel (or similar) right within the confines of the car. As it stands, the outfit has already signed a half-million dollar joint development agreement with Chevron to “pursue fuel processing technology for hydrogen refueling stations,” and while this stuff isn’t apt to be an option on any showroom models next year, InnovaTek is still aiming to commercially license the microreactors by 2009.

QuantumSphere speaks of homemade hydrogen

March 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ll be honest, we’re not getting ourselves all riled up about this just yet — after all, it’s not like QuantumSphere is the first (nor the last) company to teeter on announcing a legitimate “solution” to ditching gasoline. Nevertheless, said startup has reportedly figured out a way to “make hydrogen at home from distilled water and ultimately bring the cost of hydrogen fuel cells in line with that of fossil fuels.” More specifically, the outfit claims to have “perfected the manufacture of highly reactive catalytic nanoparticle coatings that could up the efficiency of electrolysis, the technique that generates hydrogen from water.” Unbelievable though that may sound, it’s still looking to unveil a battery using its own technology later this year, so we’ll just wait and see what becomes of that initiative before bidding gas stations adieu for good.

Tesla hopes for $250 million in funding for electric sedans

February 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Remember that elusive WhiteStar we first got wind of earlier this month? Apparently, Tesla Motors is doing its best to round up a quarter-billion dollars over the next two years in order to produce the aforementioned electric sedan. Reportedly, the firm is deciding between Albuquerque, New Mexico or the East Bay area in California to construct its plant, and if all goes to plan, it’ll use that facility to crank out the 2010 luxury sports sedan. As expected, concrete details are scant at the moment, but we are hearing that it hopes to launch the WhiteStar for around “half the price of its roadster,” which currently retails in the US for a shade under $100,000.

Kite-assisted ship to set sail in January

December 19th, 2007 by

Filed under:

If you thought a solar-powered ferry was far out, get a load of this. Reportedly, a 132-meter long vessel will be making its maiden voyage next month, but rather than chugging copious quantities of diesel while traversing the Atlantic, it’ll be sipping down fuel and receiving a good bit of help from the computer guided kite attached to its bow. The $725,000 device will be tethered to a 15-meter high mast and will fly some 300 meters above the ship in order to catch enough wind to actually aid in its movement. It’s suggested that the SkySails kite propulsion system will slash fuel consumption by “up to 20-percent or more,” saving the operator some $1,600 per day and reducing carbon emissions all the while. ‘Course, all the company has to do now is make sure the January trip is a success and it’ll have a list of to-be owners a mile long.

FuelPod2 converts excess cooking oil into biodiesel

December 5th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Engineering folks have long since been powering their automobiles with less than scrumptious liquids, but Green Fuels is hoping to make the usage of homegrown biodiesel entirely more common. The firm’s FuelPod2 is aimed squarely at the domestic market and is capable of churning out 50-liters of fuel each day from waste cooking oil. Reportedly, the 140-centimeter high device utilizes external, thermostatically-controlled band heaters to pre-heat the oil, which ensures that the warming takes places prior to the addition of chemicals. Customers will also receive a “comprehensive operating manual” and can feel free to phone up a dedicated helpline in case of emergency, but truthfully, we’d expect nothing less from a system starting at £1,750 ($3,607).

Mitsubishi shows off sporty all electric i-MiEV car, Tesla puts up its dukes

October 29th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Granted, we’ll still give the Tesla Roadster the upper hand in terms of sheer sexiness, but Mitsubishi is hoping to attract any wandering eyes by unveiling a sporty new all electric whip of its very own. Shown recently at the Tokyo Motor Show, the compact i-MiEV will reportedly be powered by a pack of Li-ions that can enable drivers to scoot about 100 miles before needing a recharge. After it’s out of juice, it’ll take around 7-hours at 200V or 14-hours at 100V to charge it back up. Most notable about this ride, however, is the proposed release date: 2009. This figure was recently moved up a year from the original 2010 projection, but unfortunately, no details surrounding a price or specific launch markets have been disclosed. Be sure and hit the via link for a bevy of photos.

Inventor claims electric van can cruise for 500-miles on full charge

October 3rd, 2007 by

Filed under:

We’ve heard some pretty zany claims when it comes to alternatively-powered vehicles, but Daren Luedtke is suggesting this his homemade electric van can propel itself some “500 miles” on a single charge. He also noted that it can be fully recharged in just eight hours, and he has apparently filed for a number of patents on the technology. The prototype Caravan, which took a few hundred thousand dollars to convert, is filled with batteries and also sports a computer that “monitors inputs such as amperage and voltage.” Luedtke Enterprises is purportedly looking for manufacturers to help bring the technology to the public, and if you’re interested in hearing more, you can hit the read link for a video interview with the head honcho himself.
