Amazon slashes Dash Express by $100 for the day

October 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Originally a $600 piece of kit and released at $400, Amazon and Dash have been drilling away at the Dash Express pricetag since its conception. The unit permanently hit $300 in June, but we’re getting the one-day-only vibe on this latest sale: Amazon’s offering the Dash Express Navigator as its Gold Box deal of the day for a mere $200 (monthly fees notwithstanding). Not bad for an internet-connected, ultra-extensible navigation device — in fact, not too bad for 4.3-inch GPS device of any sort, even if those maps are still mega-ugly.

EngadgetAmazon slashes Dash Express by $100 for the day originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 10:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Confirmed: Kids like Sugar better than XP

October 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s hardly a scientific test, but when a Cnet editor’s 8 year old daughter was given the choice between an OLPC XO laptop running Windows XP or the Linux-based Sugar UI, Sugar was the winner. As Cnet points out, either OS when properly incorporated into the teaching curriculum should serve the children of developing nations equally well. Only one, however, promises to prepare our youth for middle management.

P.S. Amazon’s Give One, Get One program will be limited to Linux according to Cnet and confirmed in the OLPC Wiki — no dual-boot for you Santa.

[Thanks, Justin G.]

Amazon’s Kindle 2 in the wild?

October 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

So much for Amazon’s attempts to quell Kindle 2 rumors, eh? Talk of a replacement (or a pair of replacements) for Amazon’s popular — but very oddly-styled — e-reader has been in the mix seemingly since the first model started shipping, and Boy Genius Report has scored shots of something that certainly looks like it could be in the legitimate pipeline. The revised device appears to address complaints over the original’s look head-on, rounding the corners and ditching the oddball angles; the scroll wheel has been replaced with a joystick, the SD slot is gone (don’t worry, there’s at least a gig and a half on-board), and around back, we have grills that seem to suggest integrated stereo speakers. The display is basically the same size — no color here yet, sorry — so unless the sharp edges on your first-gen piece are driving you batty, it looks like this could be safely skipped by current owners while roping in new buyers who wouldn’t have considered it before. Thing is, was ditching the scroll wheel and that trick mirrored bar in favor of a joystick really the right way to go?

Amazon music, movie downloads coming to T-Mobile G1?

September 22nd, 2008 by

Amazon’s always looking for creative new ways to distribute digital media — and in light of its recently-launched Video On Demand service and the decent head of steam AmazonMP3 has managed to build, it’d probably just love to shoehorn its way onto a high-profile mobile device right about now. VentureBeat is reporting a juicy rumor of a G1 that made an appearance somewhere in San Fran’s seedy underbelly over the weekend bearing an Amazon music and video app designed to dole out media for cash, suggesting that Android’s first commercial hardware might come out of the gate ready not just to lock horns with the iPhone’s WiFi App Store, but also to straight-up beat it by throwing in movie and TV download capability. Then again, no 3G network — particularly one with as small of a footprint as T-Mobile’s — is mighty enough to effectively do feature-length movie downloads over the aether, so it remains to be seen exactly how this would all play out. Get a good night’s sleep this evening, folks, because if everything goes according to plan, we’ll have some solid answers in just a few short hours.

Plastic Logic’s e-reader vs Amazon Kindle… fight! (updated with video)

September 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The kids at tgdaily have a hands-on video of Plastic Logic’s biggie e-reader unveiled at DEMO earlier this week. With it, they’ve also nabbed a bit more information on this potential subscription-based, Kindle killer. The 7-mm thin reader connects via micro-USB to a PC to charge the unit or transfer documents. Documents can also be transferred over WiFi or Bluetooth (no cellular radio?) — the reader can even communicate wirelessly with other readers to transfer documents. The 8.5- x 11-inch touchscreen allows for gesture control, as we heard, with the added bonus of quick and easy on-screen annotation of any supported media type such as Word docs, PowerPoint slides, or PDFs. Plastic Logic says they don’t plan to compete with Kindle directly, instead, it’s targeting business mobile professionals with “a lot of documents already,” not those who will get all their content from the Amazon store.

Of course, a variety of leaks have already made it clear that Amazon’s not exactly standing still with its Kindle reader with larger and more, eh hem, attractive models in the works. Sony, too, is planning a special Reader-based event next month. So… is 2009 shaping up to be the death of print? Oh hells no — but it’s certainly getting a lot more interesting.

Update: DEMO launch video showing a complete walkthough of a prototype device now posted after the break.

Amazon Video on Demand store open for business via Mac, PC; open beta on Sony HDTVs

September 3rd, 2008 by

It’s official, Amazon has moved Unbox-replacement Amazon Video on Demand out of beta for Mac and PC users, while confirming rumors the still-in-beta BRAVIA Internet Video Link service is open to all Sony HDTV owners. The streaming option (you can still download and watch via Unbox on PC or TiVo, and no matter how they’re purchased, content is added to the Your Video Library accessible from the web or IVL) gives Amazon that critical buy-now / watch-immediately element some other online stores lack, for its library of 40,000 licensed movies and shows. Prices start at $1.99 for single episodes shows, and at least $2.99 for movies, with savings available on season passes, now all we need to keep an eye on is the bandwidth meter.

Amazon puts the kibosh on Kindle 2.0 rumors

August 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, so much for those rumors of a thinner, cheaper, less 80s-hot Kindle coming soon — Amazon spokesman Craig Berman told the New York Times today that there’s nothing in store for this year, and that a new version won’t happen before “sometime next year at the earliest.” So much for that, unless there’s some huge surprise in store — looks like all you college kids are going to end up killing some trees this year after all.

$249 Kindle 2.0 significantly thinner and Frog stylish?

August 26th, 2008 by

Like the 1st generation Kindle unearthed by Engadget snoops way back in September of 2006, Amazon’s having a tough time keeping the lid on its 2nd generation e-book reader. Seems everyone and his analyst brother is confirming a new, larger screened collegiate reader and at least one other variation, presumably the Kindle 2.0. BusinessWeek “confirms” the collegiate reader the goes to say that the 2.0 base unit, “is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances,” such as the placement of those massive page forward / back buttons which can trigger inadvertent page changes. In fact, their source claims that the new version is much more than an iterative evolution, “They’ve jumped from Generation One to Generation Four or Five. It just looks better, and feels better.” BW also claims that the new model’s price (currently, $359) will hit $299, “or maybe $249,” and could be announced as early as September.

Interestingly, Kindle 2.0’s design is being lead by a designer hired from the powerhouse shop, Frog Design. A group which just happened to give the Kindle a very public and very critical tongue lashing at its November 2007 launch. We guess this squeaky wheel received its oil in the form of a giant cash payment.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 wireless keypad now available for pre-order

Hey, remember that totally bodacious PlayStation 3 wireless keypad we told you about last week? Well if you do — and you should — you’ll be pleased to know that you can now pre-order the $49.99 accessory at Amazon. Sure, you’ll still have to wait till November 30th to get your hands and fingertips on the thing, but at least you can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that it has your name on it.

New Kindle rumor revived, this time with a collegiate twist

August 25th, 2008 by

Just last month we heard that Amazon could be cooking up a new pair of Kindles for the future, and now we’re seeing another report that adds a bit of legitimacy to the claim. According to McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman, “there are already several new, improved versions of the Kindle in the works,” and while an MP3 version (saywha?) isn’t in the cards, one with an “improved interface” is. Furthermore, Amazon could be aiming at least one of the new Kindle(s) at college students, though no details were given on what exactly that meant. Wait, do university attendees even read anymore?

Erector’s $300 Spykee gets a ship date: October 15th

August 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re not even going to front — we had all but forgotten about Erector’s Spykee. Granted, it didn’t do itself any favors by showing off at CES and then doing nothing for the next seven months, but we digress. If a pre-order page on Amazon is to be believed, the Spykee Spy Robot should be released on October 15th. It’s sporting a hefty $299.99 price tag and a recommended age of 8-years and up, but we’ll need to see some actual shipment notifications later this fall before we really get our hopes up. C’mon Erector, don’t let us, um, down.

Amazon’s Kindle gets display transplant, Sony Reader acts as donor

August 23rd, 2008 by

Oh sure, we’ve seen a limited number of hacks surface for the hotly selling (but still unsightly) Amazon Kindle, but we’ve yet to see a hardware mod of this magnitude. We’ve always heard that desperate times call for desperate measures, and evidently said mantra is very true. After having the display in his Kindle smashed around 8 months ago (thanks, kid sister…), blakebevin set out to perform an unprecedented surgery. With an unwanted Sony Reader LCD in hand and a badly broken Kindle on the operating table, he attempted to give the latter unit new life with a few pixels from a cross-town rival. We’ll warn you — this one’s not for the rookies in attendance, and even Mr. Bevin (it is Mr. Bevin, right?) had some “nagging button issues” once the thing was sewn back up. Give the read link a look if you ever find yourself in this admittedly peculiar situation.

Amazon rumored to have sold 240,000 Kindles

August 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Amazon’s been pretty cagey with Kindle sales numbers, except to say that it sold out the first batch in 5.5 hours and that more are finally arriving. Still, you can’t keep a secret forever, and TechCrunch says they have it on good authority that Bezos and Co. have sold some 240,000 Kindles since November. Adding it all up, that’s good enough for $100M in total revenue so far — which is about what Wall Street’s been predicting. Of course, that’s chump change compared to the $1B annual business some analysts think Kindle can be, but you gotta start somewhere — and a quarter-mil out the gate in the first year ain’t bad at all.

60GB Xbox 360 now shipping from Amazon

July 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

A few 60GB Xbox 360s may have already slipped out to retailers (as evidenced above), but if you’re not interested in running around trying to track one down, you can now snag one from Amazon and rest assured that it’ll ship out post haste. If you’ve been following this SKU’s every move, you’ll notice that’s a few days ahead of the August 4th date that Amazon once listed, and the August 6th date that Circuit City still does — but hey, we’re not complaining.

[Thanks, Michael]

Update: Microsoft’s Major Nelson has now confirmed that there is no official street date for the new 60GB model, “they’ll just appear in the retail channels.” Is this what happens when Bill G is out of the picture? Next thing we know Microsoft will start showing up late for parties and asking to sleep on our couch.

TiVo lets users buy stuff from Amazon on their TV, all three QVC fans go wild

July 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Back in May, TiVo’s VP of product marketing got all of our hopes up that the next announcement involving it and Amazon would include HD Unbox content. As you can very clearly see, this is most certainly not the case. Instead, we have the immense pleasure of informing internet-connected Series2, Series3 and TiVo HD owners that they can now buy wares from Amazon without leaving their couch. If browsing through Amazon’s extraordinarily huge store with just a remote sounds appealing to you, you’re in luck (and mildly insane). Also of note, the new Product Purchase feature will enable advertisers to “market products sold through Amazon on any broadcast or cable network, any TV show, or via any of TiVo’s extensive interactive advertising features.” In other words, next time you see Dwight using that iconic shredder, you can buy that bad boy right then and there. Take that, Staples.

Amazon Video on Demand store streams film and TV, launches today

July 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/movies/Amazon_Video_on_Demand_store_to_take_on_iTunes’; The New York Times is reporting that Amazon is scrapping its Unbox service in favor of a new online TV and movie store called Amazon Video on Demand. Unlike iTunes and Unbox, Amazon’s new digital store-front will stream any of 40,000 movies and television programs to customers. According to Bill Carr, Amazon’s VP for digital media, “Our goal is to create an immersive experience where people can’t help but get caught up in how exciting it is to simply watch a movie right from Amazon.com with a click of the button.” In this regard, the first 2 minutes of every video will begin to play when customers visit the video’s product page. Movies can be purchased and downloaded to your hard drive or stored in an Amazon video library allowing you to stream the content to other (any?) Internet connected devices. Films and TV shows from “almost all the major studios and television networks” will be available for sale or rental in the US at undisclosed prices — only Disney and its ABC subsidiary are holding out for uh, obvious reasons (Steve Jobs is Disney’s largest individual shareholder).

Amazon also plans to bring the service directly to the living room through a deal with Sony (and others) which will ultimately embed store access into future Bravia TVs. For now, Amazon’s VoD store will be available through Sony’s $300 Bravia Internet Video Link device. The store goes beta-hot today for a limited number of “invited” US Amazon.com customers before going a live later this summer.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000 shows up for pre-order at Amazon

July 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ve been tearing your hair out, pacing wildly around the room, and sweating bullets over the availability of the ASUS Eee PC 1000 (and we know you have), you’ll be pleased to know that the grown-up sized version of the company’s mini-laptop is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The site doesn’t provide specific release dates for the systems (the $699.99, 40GB SSD equipped 1000, and the $649.99, 80GB HDD equipped 1000H), though we’re figuring it can’t be too long till these models hit shipping centers. In the meantime, we recommend going for long jogs.
