iPhone 3.0 to have copy and paste, Pre-like features — but no background apps

March 15th, 2009 by

Digg’s Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass — you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that’s great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won’t have support for background apps — which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone “up to speed with the Palm Pre” a little suspect. We’ll find out what’s what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

Macbook with Apple logo-turned-LCD now on eBay, naturally

March 15th, 2009 by

Not that we can really blame the guy or anything, but don’t think that the selling of this machine at this point in the history of mankind is any sort of coincidence. Literally two days after we took a glance at this very Macbook — which had its Apple logo replaced with a bona fide, completely functional LCD — it’s up for auction at eBay. We know, the economy’s a little rough right now, so we’ll chalk this one up to a creature of the entrepreneurial spirit and move on. But yes, you should be prepared to pay top dollar (or learn how to mod) if you’re dead set on being its next owner.

Video: Apple Nehalem-based Mac Pro unboxing and hands-on

March 14th, 2009 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/VIDEO_Apple_Nehalem_based_Mac_Pro_unboxing_and_hands_on’; Here she is, fresh off the Saturday Express. Apple’s latest Mac Pro is said to be significantly more nimble and entirely easier to upgrade than its Penryn-based predecessor, and while it’ll take us a few days yet to check out the former claim, we can already assure you that the second one is valid. Upon unboxing this beast (to be fair, it’s not all that monstrous), we immediately dug within the cover to see what was up with Apple’s new tray system. Rather than forcing users to squeeze their hands into unfathomably tight places just to pop in a new DIMM or add in a fresh 2TB hard drive, the engineers at Cupertino found a way to place all eight RAM slots on a removable tray, meaning that you can actually take that piece elsewhere and operate under better lighting. The tray was dead simple to remove and replace, and while it’s a small inclusion, it’s definitely an appreciated one. We’ll be stressing this thing out and writing up a more thorough review soon, but for now, enjoy the snapshots / video below and after the break, respectively.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXC: TESO starts aping MacBook Air, quits early

March 13th, 2009 by

Astoundingly enough, we haven’t actually seen a barrage of MacBook Air clones. Which is pretty remarkable given that, you know, it’s a Cupertino-designed product. With such a huge opportunity staring it in the face, China’s own TESO decided to see what it could whip up, and what it whipped sits pictured above. Iconic glossy white Apple coat? Check. Impossible to miss MBA styling? Check. One single lonely USB port? Check. Too bad it threw in some low rate keyboard and a mismatched battery cover on the underside — we were almost totally digging this. Sike.

iPod shuffle teardown: guts weigh just 10% more than sheet of paper

March 13th, 2009 by

Regular readers, you know the drill: interesting product introduced, product splayed wide for nerdgasm pulp. iFixIt has the honors again, this time aiming its Xacto at the new iPod shuffle. After the usual struggle to open Apple’s un-serviceable (by consumers) gear, iFixIt notes that the functioning parts of the 3rd gen shuffle weight only 10% more than single sheet of letter-sized paper. Hit that read link for the visual gore — pretty amazing stuff at this scale.

Apple patent filing details possible “remote wand” for Apple TV, again

March 12th, 2009 by

We’ve already seen some patent evidence that Apple has at least been considering a Wiimote-like controller for the Apple TV, and a newly published patent filing has now thrown yet more fuel onto the fire, although, as with all Apple patents, that’s hardly a guarantee of anything. Still, this latest filing is nothing if not detailed, and it clearly shows the so-called “remote wand” being used to control just about every aspect of the Apple TV, with the wand being twisted and turned to flip through a music library, rotate pictures, and simply control a cursor on the screen — there’s even a glimpse of it being used with a paint application. So, it’s certainly possible, perhaps even likely given Apple’s increasing distaste for buttons, but just keep all those Apple patents for head-mounted displays in the back of your mind lest you get too excited.

Sirius XM developing iPhone / iPod touch streaming radio app

March 12th, 2009 by

My, my — now isn’t this something? Shortly after narrowly avoiding a dastardly collision with bankruptcy, Sirius XM is looking to connect itself with profitable enterprises in an attempt to build market share and regain interest from budget-conscience consumers. Just weeks after hearing that the sat radio company could be preparing a few Sirius / DirecTV bundles, CFO David Frear has now confirmed on a recent earnings call that the outfit is indeed developing an iPhone / iPod touch app. It’s interesting to think that a satellite radio firm could be warming to delivering more content via the internet, but it’s the apparent diversion from being a standalone offering that has us even more intrigued. It should be interesting to see how the pricing model works with this forthcoming app — will users be able to get an iPhone subscription only? Will it be tossed in gratis with traditional subscriptions? So many questions, not enough patience.

New iPod shuffle first hands-on (with video!)

March 12th, 2009 by

We just nabbed one of Apple’s new button-free iPod shuffles, and in case you were wondering: yes, it’s really small. We’re gonna play around a bit with the VoiceOver navigation and get you our full impressions in a few, but at first glance we think this is totally usable, especially for the shuffle’s sweaty target demographic. Also: it’s really small.

Update: In-depth impressions are after the break, along with video!

iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, preview on March 17th

March 12th, 2009 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_OS_3_0_coming_March_17th’; We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It’s going down March 17th. Apparently, we’ll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we’ll be there live at 10am PST (1pm EST) with the liveblog. Apple’s calling this an “advance preview of what we’re building,” so we’re not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won’t have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

So it begins: Klipsch, Scosche unveil VoiceOver-compatible iPod shuffle earbuds

March 12th, 2009 by

We knew we’d be hearing more about all those third party VoiceOver-compatible headphones today, and sure enough, the flood has begun. In an admittedly cute attempt to be first out of the gate, Klipsch has pushed out a woefully underwhelming release that simply assures consumers that it is currently working up a set of earbuds for Apple’s latest iPod shuffle, and that said ‘buds will be available to purchase sometime this summer for $99.99. In other, more tangible news, Scosche has announced (full release is after the break) actual products that’ll play nice with the aforementioned DAP: the IDR350M, IDR450M and IDR650M noise isolating earphones. All three of these also include a built-in microphone for recording voice memos, and if all goes well, they’ll be shipping this Spring for $49.99 to $99.99.

Screen Grabs: ‘24′ offers up OQO, Mac mini BOGO special

March 11th, 2009 by

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

We’ll be honest: we haven’t seen 24 for many a season now, but, thanks to a few sweet tips, we decided to take a look at a recent episode, and bam! Right after a nefarious-looking doctor suffocates an elderly gentlemen in his hospital bed, the evil chap shoots over to the nurses’ station on the down low to download some hyper-rad schematics from the terminal. So… he whips out his OQO (not the device’s first appearance on Screen Grabs), plugs ‘er into the nearby Mac mini (ditto) and goes about his suspicious, suspicious business. Dude, we gotta get to this magical hospital, where technology rules and the “doctors” are plotting stuff. Jack into some more evidence after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

New iPod shuffle requires extra adapter for third-party headphones

March 11th, 2009 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/New_iPod_Shuffle_requires_dongle_for_non_Apple_headphones’; We were wondering why the new voice-enabled iPod shuffle even has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack since it’s controlled by proprietary headphones, and we just got the answer: non-Apple headphones will require a special dongle that includes the new three-button controller, and Apple says it’s working with third parties to bring other compatible ‘phones to market. Yes, Apple’s cheapest iPod is now the most needlessly complex, and far from cost-effective if you want to use your own cans: assuming the adapter will cost between $20 and $30 like most other Apple accessories, you’re looking at minimum $100 outlay for the new shuffle, and at that point you might as well pick up a $150 iPod nano, which is also VoiceOver-enabled in addition to having twice the storage, dongle-less controls, a screen, and numerous other features. We’ll see if this thing is so tiny these concerns wash out when we get one in our hands, but does anyone actually feel like the numbers tip in favor of the shuffle here? We’re all ears.

P.S.- Yes, we know $100 can get you any number of fine non-Apple players, we’re just talking about Apple’s price points. Feel free to suggest your favorite alternative, though!

Update: Apple called to clarify that the nano doesn’t have the exact same VoiceOver feature, which is shuffle-exclusive; the nano does “spoken menus” but doesn’t say track names as you skip around. We’re getting a full list of differences between the two systems, we’ll let you know if there’s anything else major.

Dev Team releases free iPod touch 2G jailbreak

March 11th, 2009 by

Well, that didn’t take long — hot on the heels of the $15 NitroKey Slipstream iPod touch 2G jailbreak, the Dev Team’s released their free version. Apparently they’d been hoping to keep the jailbreak-enabling security hole a secret until the next version of the iPhone came out so Apple wouldn’t be able to fix the flaw, but NitroKey is apparently based on their code and they didn’t want people paying to use it. It’s not all packaged up into PwnageTool or QuickPwn just yet, but it should be soon, and there are options for the impatient — hit the read link for more.

Apple’s redesigned iPod shuffle hits 4GB, talks to you (updated with video!)

March 11th, 2009 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_s_redesigned_iPod_shuffle_hits_4GB’; Bam, another Apple rumor vindicated. Apple just doubled the capacity of its iPod shuffle to 4GB while ditching the control wheel entirely. The new design keeps the clip and adds VoiceOver — a new feature that gets around the lack of display by telling you which song is playing and who performs it at the touch of a button on the earbud cable. It’ll also call out your playlists and let you navigate to others. Available in black or silver for $80 and your claim to what Apple calls the “world’s smallest music player.” Check the video tutorial after the break.

Update: VoiceOver in English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Apple store down: 4GB iPod shuffle on the way?

March 11th, 2009 by

Yeah, we know, the Apple Store’s down. We had presumed it to be regular maintenance. After all, it’s not Tuesday and there’s not a single Apple rumor in the mix that would warrant such a quiet product launch. Then we peeped MacRumors and low and behold Arn’s got a source claiming 4GB iPod shuffles (up from 2GB) are on the way in black, silver, and possibly other colors. Makes sense to us.

Nokia continues to hemorrhage Smartphone marketshare to RIM and Apple

March 11th, 2009 by

Rough morning for Nokia. After having its trio of new music-oriented handsets leaked, Gartner goes and releases a set of unflattering sales figures related to Nokia’s beleaguered smartphones. While smartphone sales overall increased 3.7% in Q4, Nokia’s share slid from 50.9% to “just” 40.8% on 15.6 million units. While many, including Samsung and HTC gained, it was RIM and Apple that made the biggest advances. RIM increased its share of the lucrative market to 19.5% (7.4 million units) from 10.9% while Apple more than doubled its share, up from 5.2% to 10.7% (4.1 million units). Keeping things in perspective: smartphones accounted for only 12% of all mobile device sales for the quarter. There’s a method to Nokia’s mid- to low-end handset madness.

Tweetie 1.3 approved — what are we supposed to do with this wagon full of torches and pitchforks?

March 10th, 2009 by

Apple can be slow to act on user outcry at times, but it looks like the curious, discouraging case of Tweetie 1.3’s App Store denial has come to a quick and painless resolution. There’s no telling if it was the shouting proles that moved Apple to act, or perhaps a spoonfull of common sense — Tweetie was apparently rejected on the grounds that it let people read swear words on the internet — but whatever might have happened behind closed doors in Cupertino, Tweetie 1.3 is at last free to roam on the App Store, according to a Tweet from Tweetie developer Loren Brichter. Now all we need for eternal happiness is a clearly defined set of guidelines for App Store approval, a consistent appeals process, and some Nutella.

iPod touch 2G finally jailbroken with NitroKey

March 10th, 2009 by

The iPhone Dev Team hackers have been teasing their redsn0w iPod touch jailbreak for what seems like forever now, but those you tired of waiting might want to check out the just-released NitroKey Slipstream. The $15 software does its thing on the 2.2.1 firmware, and automatically installs Cydia for all that jailbroken app action you crave — including the new paid apps store. Windows-only for now, but there’s apparently a Mac version in the works — hopefully we’ll see the free redsn0w take the lead back on that front. Report back if you take the plunge, would you?
