It’s a simple premise, and one that we wholeheartedly support: if a single display is good, two displays are doubleplusgood. AMD has always had our back in this regard, and now the company is back with further proof, in the form of a little something called the ATI FirePro 2450 video. This guy supports not two but four monitors, rocking either DVI or VGA, at up to 1920 x 1200 resolution, in a low profile form factor. The device includes support for DirectX 10.1, OpenGL 2.1 visual effects, and Microsoft Windows, and ships with 512MB of memory for $499. ATI points out that this device is aimed at “financial institutions,” possibly a gift for your sweetheart in the foreign exchange market?

Remember that GT725? You know, that behemoth of a gaming laptop announced alongside 43.8 other MSI machines at CES. Anywho, MSI has just come clean with the actual specifications, and gamers in the crowd looking for a portable rig should be pleased. The machine is claiming to be the first ever gaming lappie to include ATI’s 512MB Radeon HD4850 GPU, and that’s complemented by a 17-inch WUXGA (anti-glare) display, a 320GB SATA hard drive, Blu-ray optical drive, 4-in-1 multicard reader, up to 4GB of RAM, a plethora of ports, nine-cell battery, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, gigabit Ethernet and a 2 megapixel webcam. There’s also an ExpressCard slot, four standard speakers plus a “subwoofer” and a Turbo Drive Engine to make overclocking a lesson in simplicity. The 7-pound unit is being billed as MSI’s new flagship laptop, and with a list of internals like that, we can fully understand why. Full release is after the break.

The Guru of 3D (not an actual guru, by the way) got its hands on a prototype ATI Radeon RV740 video card, and has been kind enough to put the thing through its paces. This is the company’s first 40nm video card and while the review should all be taken with a grain of salt — being “done with beta drivers and an early engineering sample board” — preliminary results are quite positive. The card performs “fairly close to a Radeon HD 4850,” something you don’t often hear about in cards retailing for less than a hundred bucks. In fact, the reviewer was so taken by the card’s performance at this price point that he predicts that this thing will be responsible for nothing less than “another shift in current mid-range pricing.” But don’t wait until the April release date to see this thing in action — hit the read link for the big review.
[Thanks, Weston]

We first caught wind of an updated Dell Studio 15 when drivers for a 1555 model with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics popped up on Dell’s support site, and surprise — Dell Singapore’s gone and posted specs and pricing. The 1555 gets more than just a GPU boost to a 512MB 4570, it’s also scoring a new 15.6-inch WLED 1366 x 768 screen, so you can actually watch some of that high-def media at an appropriate res. The basic config nets you all the new stuff plus a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo, 3GB of RAM and a 250GB drive for S$1,599 ($1,044), which is actually a pretty stellar deal — let’s hope this bad boy makes it Stateside, and soon.

Yup, all ’round the globe, economies are taking a hit, and people are losing jobs, houses and investments (take, for instance, the news that Netgear had an unexpectedly bad fourth quarter, as well as the rumors that both Asustek and MSI will be cutting workers). So we here at Engadget are committed to trying to counter-attack a little bit of that suffering by handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff / companies stop sending things. Today we’ve got an ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card to offer up. Read the rules below (no skimming — we’re omniscient and can tell when you’ve skimmed) and get commenting!
Special thanks to AMD for providing the gear!
The rules:
- Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for “fixing” the world economy, that’d be sweet too.
- You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
- If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
- Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
- Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card. Approximate value is $70.
- Entries can be submitted until Friday, February 13th, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!

Yet again, IBuyPower is stepping out with a few new gaming rigs for the bargain-minded among us. The most recent duo to be outed by the company is the Gamer HAF 91B and the Gamer Fire, both of which are based on AMD’s latest Dragon platform and Phenom II CPU. The former gets going at just $999 and includes the Phenom II X4 920 processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 500GB SATA II hard drive, a dual-layer DVD writer, ATI’s 512MB Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, a CoolerMaster HAS 932 case and a 550-watt power supply. The more fiery sibling ups the ante with a Phenom II X4 940 CPU, a 750GB HDD, LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray drive and an NZXT Guardian 921 chassis. ‘Course, you’ll be paying $1,439 for that one, but either way you’ll be keeping things below the evidently magical $1.5k mark. Order away, should you be so inclined. Full release is after the jump.

It’s not quite a $39 graphics card but, at “less than $150,” AMD’s new ATI Radeon HD 4830 is still quite the bargain compared to ATI’s higher-end offerings, and you’ll get a good deal more oomph for those extra bucks. That includes a 256-bit GDDR3 memory interface (the actual amount of memory will vary from card to card), an impressive 640 stream processing units, AMD’s second generation Unified Video Decoder for improved HD video playback, DirectX 10.1 support, two dual-link DVI ports, and, of course, support for ATI’s CrossFireX technology. What’s more, while AMD isn’t willing to mention any specific prices below $150, The Tech Report has already turned up one card from MSI that’s selling for just $120 after a $10 rebate and, if you’re looking for a bit more information to inform your purchase, you can check out their review and benchmarks by hitting up the link below.

NVIDIA managed to generate quite a bit of interest with its $59 GeForce 9400 GT graphics card, and it looks like rival AMD is now taking things one step further with not one but two cards that are even cheaper. Those include the $55 ATI Radeon HD 4550 and the $39 ATI Radeon HD 4350, which pack 512MB and 256MB of memory, respectively, along with some other surprisingly not too shabby specs. Namely, each card packs DirectX 10.1 support, an HDMI port with support for 7.1 channel audio, upscaling “beyond 1080p,” and even support for ATI’s CrossFireX technology in case you want to pair two of them up. As usual, you can expect the cards to be available from a whole host of different manufacturers, at least some of which should have cards available by October, if not sooner.

ATI just announced its new mainstream graphics cards, the Radeon HD 4670 and 4650. At the heart of both cards is a 55nm 320-core TeraScale GPU, which is a modified version of the RV770 chip found in the Radeon HD 4800 series — it’s a lower spec chip, but it has essentially the exact same feature set. The $80 HD 4670 has 512MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the $60 HD 4650 uses 512MB of GDDR2 memory; both are relatively power-sipping with 60 watt and 50 watt draws respectively under full load. Should be out soon — HotHardware just tested an HD 4670 and found it to be quite a performer, check it all out at the read links.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/hardware/Alienware_Debuts_Radeon_HD_4870_X2_Equipped_Gaming_Rigs’;
Alienware has already stuffed NVIDIA’s top-end GTX 280 graphics card into its
Area-51 desktop, but if that’s not your thing, you can rest assured that company is now offering the high-end comforts of ATI’s
Radeon HD 4870 X2 as well. That option, which Alienware helpfully reminds us offers 2.4 teraflops of graphics power, is available in the company’s Area-51, Area-51 ALX, and Aurora desktops, each of which also offer the even pricier option of dual HD 4870 X2 cards in a CrossFireX configuration. To go for that latter bit of excess, however, you’ll also have to bump the power supply up to a full 1,200 watts, although we’re guessing that won’t be too much of a concern for anyone considering going this route.

Looks like all the Cinema 2.0 fuss that AMD has been blustering about with its new RV770-based GPUs is fully warranted. The benchmarks are in and AMD’s new $549 ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 — what AMD calls the “world’s fastest graphics card” — is an out and out screamer, besting the best cooked up over at NVIDIA thanks to that RV770 GPU pair nuzzled up next to 2GB of GDDR5 memory. As noted by PC Perspective, the new champ, “is able to run away from NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 280 1GB card handily. Our various game tests proved this - Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and GRID showed big gains for AMD’s new card at resolutions 2,048 x 1,536 and 2,560 x 1,600,” though performance gains are less dramatic as resolutions drop to 1,600 x 1,200. Not that any self-respecting gamer would push so few pixels. CrossFireX performance was disappointing, however, as the systems didn’t scale well when going from 2 to 4 GPUs. In fact, Crysis seemed to barely notice the additional CrossFireX horsepower, something that should be corrected with future driver releases. Make no mistake though, as power-hungry, expensive, and hot-running as the new HD 4870 X2 may be, it’s a big day for AMD as it retakes the graphics crown from NVIDIA, as short-lived as this victory may be.

Sure, times might be tough at AMD, but that’s not stopping the crew at ATI from gunning for NVIDIA’s newest gear — the company just announced the new HD Radeon 4850 X2 and 4870 X2. Aimed at the “super high-end” of the market, the $399 4850 X2 and $599 4870 X2 feature two GPU chips on a 625 or 750MHz bus, respectively, with up to 2GB of 900MHz GDDR5 RAM. ATI says that there’s a 20 percent overhead from pairing up the processors, so the X2s should offer 180 percent of the single GPU cards — certainly enough to outgun a single NVIDIA GTX 280, and reportedly enough to match a dual-280 setup depending on the game. We’ll see for sure when the inevitable flood of benchmarks hits when these bad boys arrive next month — any gamers out there going to take the plunge?

In yet more news about the perpetually forthcoming Fusion CPU / GPU combos from AMD, new details have been leaked regarding the chips’ sizes, configurations, and other bits of insufferably tedious details that only Professor Frink could truly love. According to this latest report, the “first” Fusion processor will be called “Shrike,” sport a dual-core Phenom CPU, an ATI RV800 GPU, and a footprint of just 40nm. Another chip, codenamed “Falcon,” will debut in 2010 at a 32nm size, based around a platform known as “Bulldozer,” and will be launched to combat Intel’s 32nm offering. Of course, we’ve been hearing about these chips since 2006, so we’re not exactly on the edge of our seats hearing new details of what essentially amounts to vaporware.

While Intel’s Larrabee might not be a household name for consumers just yet, it’s certainly at the table where Nvidia and AMD/ATI eat. The many-core (8 to 48, at least, according to that Intel graphic) x86 chip runs all your existing apps while tossing in support for OpenGL and DirectX thus eliminating the need for a discrete graphics chip. At least that’s the plan. While the exact number of cores remains a secret as does the performance of each core compared to current GPUs, given the importance Intel places on Larrabee, it’s reasonable to assume that an 8-core chip will launch in 2009 or 2010 with comparable performance to GPUs on the market at that time. Intel does say that Larrabee cores will scale “almost linearly” (read: within 10%) in games; that means that a 16-core chip will offer nearly twice the performance of an 8-core chip, 32-cores twice that of 16, and so on. Apparently this has already been proven in-house with Intel name-dropping Larrabee-coded titles such as Gears of War, FEAR, and Half-Life 2, Episode 2. It’s no coincidence then to hear that Intel’s first Larrabee product will target PC gamers. Click through if you’re just dying to read about Larrabee’s 1024 bits-wide bi-directional ring network and other bits of technical wonderment sure to create at least the hint of a silicon malaise.

Well, no wonder Hector Ruiz quit as the CEO of AMD earlier today — the chipmaker just announced its second quarter results, and they’re not good. In addition to an overall $269M operating loss, the company is taking an $876M charge against the purchase of ATI so it can abandon the handheld graphics and digital TV markets. To be honest, we hadn’t been hearing much about ATI’s plans in those areas, so it’s probably for the best the company is focusing on getting Barcelona out the door after the launch of Puma — but we doubt much is going to happen with a power vacuum at the top and a bottom line that’s bleeding red.

Choosing the right graphics card / chipset combo to give you the most bang for the buck is always tricky business, and even moreso when you’re looking to get the most out of some brand new hardware like AMD’s Radeon HD 4000 series cards. Thankfully, the folks at Legion Hardware have now stepped in to help out a bit, although, as is often the case, it’s not entirely a clear cut choice. If it’s a bargain you’re looking for though (relatively speaking), it seems like pairing an ASUS P45 motherboard with a couple of Radeon HD 4850 graphics cards (for a total of about $550) will give you enough performance to impress all but the most demanding gamer. If you want to push those benchmarks as far as possible, however, you’ll have to go up to an ASUS X48 board, although even the folks at Legion Hardware question whether the mere 5% performance gain is worth the extra cost. If you want to make your own decision though, you can hit up the link below and dig through the numbers yourself.

AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 4870 has been a bit of a mystery since word of the card first leaked out alongside the slightly lower-end Radeon HD 4850, but it looks like things are finally clearing up, with AMD itself first getting official about the card and the first hands-on previews of the card now turning up. As [H] Enthusiast reports, it looks like this one was well worth the wait, with it saying that its gameplay experiences with the card were “phenomenal.” That includes being able to play Crysis at 1920×1200 with all in-game settings cranked to “high” — a recipe for disaster on most cards, but apparently more than playable on the 4870 X2 (with some other suitably high end hardware to match, of course). What’s more, the site says the card’s performance could get even better by the time it’s officially released, as its test card was using a beta firmware that still leaves some room for improvement. Until then, you can hit up the link below for all the current numbers.

Eran Badit of NGOHQ.com has already made some considerable progress getting PhysX to run on AMD hardware, and it looks like he’s now getting a helping hand from a somewhat unexpected source, with NVIDIA itself reportedly giving the project its blessing. Apparently, NVIDIA has even gone so far as to invite Badit to join its developer program, which gives him access to documentation, SDKs and, most importantly, direct access to hardware and NVIDIA engineers, a move that Badit describes as “impressive, inspiring and motivating.” Badit is decidedly less impressed by AMD, however, which has apparently been unwilling to provide with any hardware or support for the project. That stubborn stance, he surmises, can only be due to AMD’s backing of Intel’s Havok physics engine, which NVIDIA would no doubt like to have out of the picture (hence its willingness to help here).

An external graphics card that’s actually nearing release? Be still our hearts! Fujitsu Siemens’ recently leaked external unit, which will be based on ATI XGP technology, is actually really, really close to hitting retail — according to a piece over at Fudzilla, anyway. Slated to be titled Lasso, the RV670-based device should be more than enough to handle basic tasks, but unfortunately, benchmarks were off limits. On the upside, digital photography was not, so head on down to the read link for a few more snaps.

Is this the Radeon card destined to leapfrog NVIDIA’s performance leading GTX 200 series? We’ll know in August (or soon thereafter), that’s the rumored release date for AMD’s Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card. As the X2 name implies, the card packs a pair of RV770-based GPUs and should be ready to sample with 2GB (!) of that “world’s fastest” GDDR5 memory by the end of this month. It’s worth noting that the leaked images show a total of 1GB of GDDR5 (16 Qimonda GDDR5 chips) on that black PCB. AMD will then make the 4870 X2 (RV770XT) cards available to its partners in mid-August, hitting retail soon after for an estimated $499 according to sources over at DigiTimes.
