According to sources, Acer’s tiny Aspire One laptop is now available in three iterations, the A110L, A150L, and A150X. The A110L sports an Atom N270 CPU, Intel’s 946GSE chipset, 512MB or 1GB of RAM, 8GB of NAND flash storage, an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 display, 802.11b/g, and three USB ports. The other two models come equipped with the same specs, save for a 120GB hard drive in place of the flash storage, and are offered with Linpus Linux, or Windows XP. Retailers in Germany already claim to have the A110L in stock now, selling for €329 (or about $518).

More details and press shots of ASUS Eee Box

June 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

In typical ASUS style, it utterly failed in dishing out a nice gallery of press shots to go along with the official unveiling of the Atom-powered Eee Box. Nevertheless, those photographs you’ve been hankering for have finally appeared, with luscious high-resolution angles of the white, black and “red” Eee Box. For the whole gallery along with a few informational pages on how this miniature PC is guaranteed to revolutionize the way you compute, give the read link down there a little love.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-U1 gets fully detailed, landing in August

June 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Panasonic has been teasing us with this one for quite a while now but, as promised, it has now gotten fully official with its new Atom-based Toughbook CF-U1, including word of a price tag and release date. This one comes in squarely on the small end of the Toughbook spectrum with a 5.6-inch WSVGA display, which gets backed up by 1GB of RAM, a removable 16GB SSD drive (or optional 32GB), built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and a whole host of optional add-ons, including 3G mobile broadband, GPS, a camera,a fingerprint scanner, and even an RFID reader (yet more add-ons are planned for later in the year). As is par for the course these days, you’ll also get Vista Business as standard, with an XP “downgrade” option. If that sounds like it’ll get the job done on your arduous adventures, you can look for this one to set you back a hefty $2,499 when it starts shipping in August.

Panasonic’s Atom-based UMPC Toughbook preps for shipment

June 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Get ready, argonauts — Panasonic’s Atom-based UMPC Toughbook is gearing up to ship out soon. Since getting really official at CeBIT in March, we haven’t heard a peep from Panny in regard to a definitive ship date. According to PC World, the rugged mini tablet will be loosed “later this week,” and it will of course include a touch-sensitive 5.6-inch screen, compact QWERTY keypad, a variety of ports, Intel’s Atom processor and a chassis built to withstand just about anything next to getting pelted with napalm. As for fleshed out specs and global ship dates, we’re told to expect those on Wednesday.

ASUS gets official with Atom-powered Eee Box

June 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, what do you know? Those rumored specifications for ASUS’ not-secret-at-all Eee Box were spot on. The outfit has just now gotten around to getting official with said mini PC, which checks in with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, an 80GB hard drive, multicard reader, 802.11n WiFi and gigabit Ethernet. As predicted, you’ll find Windows XP Home running the show, and ASUS is spicing things up by tossing its newly unveiled Express Gate fast boot technology on here too. There’s nary a mention of a price or release date, but that’s pretty much par for the course with this company.

Hanbit’s Pepper Pad 3 returns with Intel’s Atom inside

June 17th, 2008 by

Whoa, has it been a hot minute since we’ve seen a Pepper Pad 3 or what? Straight from the depths of left field comes Hanbit’s Pepper Pad 3, this time with a slightly more adept processor at the helm. Reportedly showcased ever-so-quietly at Computex (alongside a Tablet PC prototype), this critter was purportedly packing an Intel Atom CPU and a Linux-based OS. Further specifications included a 7-inch VGA touchscreen, QWERTY (loose interpreters, we see) keypad, integrated WiFi and a 20GB / 30GB hard drive. Not a clue when this thing is scheduled to slip out, but it will certainly give the Everun a run for its money in the ugly department.

Leaked slide shows AMD’s BGA CPU could take on Intel’s Atom processor

June 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

AMD BGA

While AMD has been making headway with some impressive high-end processors, Intel’s Atom has been all the rage in netbooks and ultra-portables. You didn’t think they were going to just sit around and let that happen, did you? This supposedly leaked slide (for which we couldn’t verify a source) details a single-core 64-bit processor dubbed “BGA CPU” that runs at 1GHz, utilizes DDR2-400 memory, and sports on-chip L1 & L2 caches. As for size, you’re looking at 27 x 27 mm (1.06-inches square). All said, the chip’s 8-watt thermal footprint isn’t going to win any super-portable or MID manufacturer converts. We’ll keep an eye on this.

HTC developing Atom- and Snapdragon-based MIDs?

June 16th, 2008 by

HTC’s hit us with some sexy new handsets lately, but a new report from DigiTimes says that the juggernaut ODM is getting ready to make some MID waves, and soon. Apparently inspired by the success of the Eee (who hasn’t been?), HTC is rumored to be prepping devices based on Intel’s Atom and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms, as well as up to 10 new phones in the second quarter of the year — which, conveniently enough, is this quarter. There’s no word on what we might be seeing apart from some new Diamond and Touch Pro handsets, but hopefully we’ll see soon enough — or just be left broken-hearted by yet another unsourced DigiTimes rumor.

MSI Wind Atom-based laptops delayed again

June 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

MSI Wind delay

For those of you looking to get your hands on one of MSI’s new Atom-based Wind laptops, you’re going to need to wait a bit longer. We expected the machines to start shipping already, but a big pink “Estimated Ship Date: Friday, June 27″ at MSI’s online fulfillment site has shattered our dreams all the way to, at the earliest, the end of June with our hands on the machines in early July at best. We’ll keep our eyes on what appear to be an endless stream of tacked-on delays. MSI, you tease us so!

Update: So it looks like the delayed machine will ship with a 3-cell (instead of 6-cell) battery due to shortages. To be fair, the price is a somewhat reduced $479.

ASUS Eee PC 1000H already unboxed on video

June 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Okay, so that was eerily fast. Merely two days after ASUS’ Eee PC 1000H went on sale in Taiwan, the cats over at TweakTown managed to secure a unit and curb their excitement long enough to unbox the thing, snap some photographs along the way and even capture the experience on video. Here’s a hint: it’s an Eee PC, it has a 10-inch display, and it’s leaving its original packaging. Video after the break.

Gigabyte M528 Atom-based MID gets $750 price and release timeframe

June 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Gigabyte M528

Just when we though Tegatech’s Gigabyte M528 MID would run a scary $1131, Gigabyte has come out and said that the unit will run a somewhat more palatable $750. That includes the hardware only, so the SIM and 3G data plans will be completely up to you. But, keep in mind this unit packs an 800Mhz Menlow processor, GPS, and 8GB SSD. As for when you can grab one, it’s looking like late July in Taiwan. Hit the read link if you’re still with us and want to pre-order this naughty little MID.

VIA and NVIDIA sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g

June 9th, 2008 by

Sweet, and likely salty. That’s VIA’s “special assistant to the president,” Timothy Chen, giving NVIDIA’s Drew Henry, general manager of its MCP business, a little sugar. The moment was captured after the unveiling of the Mini-ITX 2.0 spec at Computex last week. Why? We’re not exactly sure, but we imagine things can get a bit emotional when old enemies join forces against a foe as formidable as Intel. Now give eachother a firm slap on the back, punch to the shoulder, and possibly, if it feels right… a noogie. There’s much to do if NVIDIA’s Tegra and VIA’s Nano are to supplant Intel’s Silverthorne and Diamondville in future MIDs and netbooks, respectively.

MSI Wind benchmarked and reviewed: now official alternative to Eee PC

June 3rd, 2008 by

Here’s the moment many of you Eee-wannabees have been waiting for, the official announcement of the 10-inch, 1,204 x 600 LED-backlit MSI Wind. No surprises here on the leakiest of all netbooks. Still, when you consider that your $399 buys you a Linux-based system riding atop Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom processor, an 80GB 2.5-inch disk, 5.5-hour rated battery, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g WiFi, it makes the $625 price of the Eee PC 1000(H) pretty tough to justify. Unless 802.11n and that beefier battery really do it for you. If the price doesn’t sway you then how about a review? Laptop magazine just published their thoughts on the $499 XP model and gave it their “editor’s choice” award calling the Wind “the best all-around mini-notebook to date.” Now the bad news: the XP Wind ships June 16th while the el-cheapo Linux version won’t ship until later this summer. Full press release and specs posted after the break.

Computex awash in Atom-based netbooks, VIA’s Nano a no-show

June 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Man, we’ve waited so long for Intel’s Silverthorne to become Atom to become product that we’re feeling a bit misty at the sight of all those Atom-based netbooks pictured above. Intensified by the fact that VIA has apparently come to the show without a single Nano-based netbook of its own. Hold tight while we await official word from Dell about their “mini-Inspiron” netbook expected sometime today.

Hands-on with Atom-based Eee PC 901 running WiMax

June 2nd, 2008 by

What, you’re not in Taipei? No problem, Engadget Chinese is at the WiMax Expo with the first WiMax-enabled Eee PC 901 pictures. Showing off a funky, cutaway hinge (likely due to missing battery), the Eee PC 901 features Intel’s Atom processor as expected, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g, and now 802.11n too (hoozah!). The card reader supports MMC/SD/SDHC cards and the WiMax chipset is Intel’s Link 5150. Keep in mind that the Link 5150 is a dual-mode WiFi and WiMax module. In other words, there’s no guarantee the 802.11n will carry over to the WiMax-less 901 being announced tomorrow. A few more pics after the break, all the rest at our Chinese site.

Gigabyte’s M912 gets some specs, possible photo

June 1st, 2008 by

It’s not yet clear whether the image above is actually Gigabyte’s forthcoming M912, but at least we’re starting to get a clearer picture of the Atom-based laptop’s specs. We’re thinking maybe this shot could be of another model, though, given the fact that the M912 only has VGA out listed, while we can clearly see what appears to be a full DVI port above. The rest of those specs, for your perusal:

  • 8.9-inch WXGA (1280 x 768) convertible touchscreen display, LED backlight
  • 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, max 1GB RAM
  • 120, 160 and 250GB drive options
  • 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
  • 1.3 megapixel camera, (3) USB 2.0 ports, SD, VGA, Ethernet
  • 4 hour battery
  • 9.2 x 7 x 1.65 - 1.1-inches, 2.6 pounds

ASUS said to be holding off on Eee PC 900 orders in anticipation of Atom

May 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s only just barely made it out into the wild, but DigiTimes is now reporting that ASUS has already stopped taking orders from resellers for its 8.9-inch Eee PC 900 in anticipation of the now imminent launch of the Atom-based Eee PC 901. That word apparently comes from some unspecified “industry sources,” who also claim that the Eee PC 900 was only ever a “transitional product” to begin with, which ASUS pushed out the door with a plain old Celeron M processor in order to get an 8.9-inch model out ahead of its competitors. Certainly a reasonable conclusion to draw, but a quick glance of online retailers shows that there’s still plenty of Eee PC 900s out there for the taking if you’re not sold on this whole Atom thing.

Intel Atom 330 coming Q3, more details come to light

May 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Intel Atom 330If you’ve been keeping up on the launch of Intel’s dual-core Atom 330 processor, we have a couple little extra nubbins for you to chew on this evening. We already know that the Atom 330 will clock in at 1.6GHz, but that 1MB of cache will be split amongst the two processors. Additionally, we’re looking at a 533MHz FSB, 64-bit processing (no real surprise there), and a peak TDP of only 8W, which should be just perfect for those mini PC’s that rely on passive cooling. Look for a release in Q3 of 2008, most likely packed inside those Wind PCs.

Rumored dual-core Atom details get fleshed out

May 26th, 2008 by

We’d already heard that Intel planned to trot out some dual-core Atom processors sooner or later, and the Fudzilla website has now turned up a few more details on ‘em courtesy of a supposedly legitimate leak. According to it, the first dual-core processor will be dubbed the Atom 330, and will clock in at the same 1.6GHz as the current single-core Atom 230 (no word on that 1.87GHz version we heard about previously). What’s more, the processor will supposedly pack 1MB cache memory (twice the amount of the current single-core processor), and boast a TDP rating of just 8W, which is a good deal more than the 2W rating the current Atom 230 has, but still far less than any of Intel’s other low-voltage processors. Still no word on a price for it, unfortunately, but it’s said to be on track for a release sometime in the third quarter of this year.

Secrets of the Atom cracked, Wind PC revealed

May 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Everyone wants a new generation ultra-portable pumping the Atom processor right? After all, it’s Intel’s latest and greatest Centrino proc. Not so fast… literally. Impress got their hands on an unofficially released MSI Wind PC (the mini-PC, not the low-cost laptop) and subjected the 1.33GHz Atom processor to a suite of standard tests. While the source is in machine-translated Japanese, that table comparing the Atom with Eee PC 900’s Celeron and a typical ULV Core 2 Duo found in a wide range of full-sized, ultra-portable laptops speaks for itself. Keep in mind though that Intel’s Atom is supposed to be less power hungry than its peers and CPU benchmarking is hardly the last word when it comes to determining real-world laptop performance — read/writes to disk, memory, and other system nuances must also be considered. Nevertheless, based on this table and other mounting evidence, first and second generation Eee PC owners shouldn’t feel any compulsion to rush out and upgrade to Atom on day 1.
