Sling Media has a history of not disappointing, and while we were admittedly bummed to see Clip+Sling omitted from SlingPlayer 2.0, it looks like that one gripe is about to be remedied. If you’ll recall, said feature was originally announced way back at the front end of 2007, and now select users are receiving e-mails announcing the launch of a private beta program. The Sling.com portal promises to “give users access to a premier library of content from top TV networks, movie studios, sports leagues and websites,” and reportedly, it’ll let folks “grab snippets of television content, upload them to the Sling site and create playlists and feeds that can be viewed and subscribed to by others.” Is that YouTube / Hulu / Joost / et al. quaking in their boots, or are we just happy it’s Friday?
Update: Sling pinged us to say that the actual Clip+Sling functionality was still in progress and wouldn’t be a part of the initial Sling.com portal. It’s still in the works, though — shame it won’t happen sooner, though.

Back in June, we heard that Sprint would be going live with its XOHM WiMAX service in Baltimore, um, this month. As of today, it’s pretty clear that the service won’t be rolled out fully before October dawns, but at least some progress is being made. Based on a survey sent out to select (read: lucky) Baltimore-area residents, it seems that Intel and Sprint are willing to give away free laptops in order to trial the XOHM service in the city. Unfortunately, the lappies won’t even be given out until late October, and the trial itself is set to last 30 days, so frankly, we’ll be lucky to see XOHM hit the general populace before Santa takes to the friendly skies. Though, why are we not surprised?

In case you haven’t noticed, today’s a pretty big day for Sling Media. Not monumentally large or anything, but decently sized, we reckon. Of course, if you’re a placeshifter and a UIQ user, you may disagree vehemently. Announced today, said company has unveiled a SlingPlayer Mobile version compatible with the UIQ interface on Symbian OS phones from Motorola and Sony Ericsson. For those out of the loop, said app will give Slingbox users the ability to “watch and control their home TV from a network-connected mobile phone.” In related news, the freshest SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 has launched as a public beta, and with it comes a live video buffer, “The Guide,” SlingRemote and a bevy of different viewing modes. Take advantage of that broadband connection while you still can — get to downloadin’!

While rumors have been flowing hot and heavy about VUDU’s possible demise, it seems the company has other plans in mind. We’ve received word that select beta team members are now being asked to try out new downloads that are intended to rival Blu-ray quality. Dubbed HDX movies, these ultra-high-def flicks are currently being watched by folks willing to wait a number of hours (two to three) for a film to start, but there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever see this hit the masses. Sure, we totally dig the idea of BD-quality content on-demand, but we could almost scoot down to Blockbuster, rent a bona fide Blu-ray Disc, watch, and return it before a so-called HDX title even begins.

It looks like the Pandora project is really coming together nicely. EvilDragon has just posted this video on the GP32x boards of a development model up and running. It’s pretty exciting stuff if you’re a homebrew fan (and we know you are), featuring demos of the device smoothly running emulators like PicoDrive, PSNES, booting up a build of Linux, and even getting its Quake 2 on (at high frame rates and looking crystal clear). It’s still going to be awhile before we’ve actually got our grubby mitts on one of these, but this is certainly doing a good job of whetting our appetites. Watch the video after the break and see for yourself.
[Thanks, Chris]

It’s an interesting day for the folks at Google. Not only do we see the supposed GPhone (AKA, the HTC Dream) get trotted out to the FCC, and hear new rumors about the device’s release date, but now there’s a brand-spanking-new release of the Android SDK available. The version? 0.9 — a number which puts this dangerously close to a number that most would consider non-beta. Meanwhile, the new version of the mobile OS has been significantly changed, adding a new widgetified (big old clock: present!) and flickable homescreen, a handy (and speedy) tab to pull up your apps, plus a media player, camera, and handful of other noticeable design tweaks. Don’t believe us? Check out the video after the break showing it all in action.
Update: We’ve included a gallery of screenshots as well. Check out the sync contacts option. Sweet! Also, you may note that it asks you to “open keyboard to compose message” in the SMS screen — almost like it’s made for a device with a slide-out keyboard.

According to Appleinsider, the newest beta of iPhone firmware (2.1, beta 4) has been seeded to developers, but takes one crucial element off the table — push notification. If you’ll recall, the new feature will allow third-party developers to take advantage of Apple’s servers for real-time push of data to and from applications. Apparently, the feature has been cut from the most recent beta for “further development” with no indication of when it will be reinstated. Of course, this is a beta seed of the firmware — the actual release is slated for September — and it makes sense that Apple would be tweaking major additions like this before going live, especially considering its recent launch debacles.

Simple, really. In the US (and yes, Canada), download the PlayStation Home theme from the PlayStation Store and you’re essentially submitting your application to be an early tester for PlayStation Home’s closed beta set to kick off at the end of the month. In Europe, the PlayStation Home beta selects you. Er, we mean that there’s nothing extra for you to do since you’ve done it already — SCEE will be selecting (check your eMail) its most active users on the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Store. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

That nasty Windows Home Server data corruption bug might finally be a thing of the past, as WHS Power Pack 1 has gone live after a month-long beta test. Not much else to the enhancement suite: x64 support and support for backup to external media are along for the ride, but otherwise it’s mostly performance tweaks. Go on and grab it now, you crazy home-server admins.
[Thanks, Neal]

In the name of developers, developers, developers… data corruption bug be gone! Microsoft just released its Windows Homes Server Power Pack 1 for public beta consumption. Perhaps the most important contribution for some of you is a fix to WHS data corruption issues — a bug which proved more difficult to squash than previously thought. PP1 beta also teaches WHS a few new tricks including support for x64-based Windows boxes and the ability to backup the server to external media. Still, as solid as this release appears, it’s still beta, so be careful.

We’ve heard rumors about it and even seen some third party apps that bring Vista’s SideShow tech to Windows Mobile devices, but Microsoft has finally made the obvious crossover an official reality with the release of the Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile Development Beta. It’s still in early, early stages (the version number is 0.01), but if you’re feeling particularly courageous you can install the beta on WinMo 5 and 6 devices that use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack and have the .NET Compact Framework installed and have them function as SideShow devices when in range of your machine, and access previously-sent data when you’re away. Let us know how things go in comments, won’t you?

Guess what, loyal Windows Home Server users? A fix for that completely obnoxious data corruption bug is on the way. According to an email beamed out by the WHS team, the final release of Power Pack 1 is still aways out, but the public beta is all set to be loosed on those who willingly accept the associated risk(s). Said download is slated to launch in “early June,” but those who want to get in on the pre-release fun are being encouraged to sign up now. Needless to say, those who toss their name in the ring better be sure their data is backed way up — after all, the whole point of this test is to find any remaining holes that could render your files unusable. Keep an eye on that inbox for an invite, and if you’re content with just getting the end product, the wait is growing ever shorter.

After hitting delays already, we can’t say that this was the PlayStation Home press release we’ve been expecting. Nevertheless, Sony just announced that it is expanding the closed PlayStation Home beta to more users in “Fall 2008.” Kazuo Hirai, prez and ringmaster of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, “We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service.” Come on Mr Hirai, you can say it, PlayStation Home is delayed. See, that’s wasn’t so hard.

Word on the street (or via super-secret emails) is that Palm is about to begin beta testing on a fancy new device. Apparently, an email went out to select individuals calling for Sprint customers who will use Bluetooth devices and have access to WiFi. The email further requests that potential testers be “seasoned business professionals” who “commute and spend a ton of time working on email and on the phone.” From the sounds of things, the company is gearing up to road test its heavily rumored, WiFi-equipped Treo 800w, a Windows Mobile device likely sporting 6.1. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s that mildly dated looking device from Gates’ CES keynote that we’ve also seen in leaks recently. Nice going on the new spec and inclusion of WiFi (at long last) — now how about some new form factors?

Folks hanging on the Mac side of life have surely been waiting in tense anticipation for DisplayLink to become OS X friendly, for like, ever. As promised, the first drivers have emerged in order to give Intel-based Macs (yes, MacBook Air and Mac mini are included) the ability to connect with up to four monitors over USB. Granted, the beta software has no 2D acceleration and no OpenGL 3D acceleration, but both limitations are known and will hopefully be ironed out in the final release. So, what are you waiting for? Tap the read link below to get your download on — but be sure to read up on the documentation before forging ahead without a care in the world.

We know there have been a couple of crappy videos here and there on the web, but we finally got our own grubby paws on the yet-to-be released iPhone 2.0 beta, which isn’t officially due until this June. It isn’t exactly awash with changes, but here’s what you need to know:
- Exchange is so on! Changes are pushed over the network, but over WiFi it does check-ins, so it’s not as instantaneous.
- There’s no contact search that we can see, so far. Maybe that only gets turned on if you have thousands of contacts (which we definitely do not).
- There’s a new button in the calendar, but we don’t know what it is and can’t make it do anything.
- The App Store is there, of course, but doesn’t do anything yet (except error out that it can’t connect).
- Wondering when Apple will make good on its agreement to license Cisco technology? Well, the branded Cisco VPN screen has definitely been added to the VPN settings. We couldn’t really test this one, but assume it works as advertised. We don’t yet know if it supports SecurID or other hardware token authenticators.
- Parental controls most certainly work. Marvel as we turn off YouTube!
- You can now order your preferred WiFi networks.
- In addition to having a new sideways scientific mode(!), the basic calculator now does commas and has new, useful functions for the math nerds; both the calc and the iTunes icons have changed.
- By far our favorite new feature is multi-select in mail, though. Now when you hit edit you can select as many messages as you want and delete or move them as a group. Friggin’ finally. Now where’s that two-pane client?
Definitely encouraging stuff in here. We’ll have some video up of this thing a little later; in the mean time, there anything you want to know? Big ups to our source(s) for hooking us up with this!

Here’s the good news: “select” registered Apple developers won’t be the only ones with access to iPhone 2.0 beta software before the official June launch. The bad news? It still probably won’t be you. Apple is courting enterprise IT departments to test out the 2.0 beta in a new “iPhone Enterprise Beta Program,” but there are quite a few restrictions and caveats, with an extensive application form and no guarantee of success. If you get into the program, you’ll get to test out all those new enterprise features announced today, and provide Apple with feedback on how awesome everything is.

The fall air certainly seems to have put a spring in the step of OS devs everywhere, and Microsoft’s getting in the fun too, releasing the first release candidate of Vista SP1 to beta testers today. Although there don’t appear to be many new features on top of what we’ve already seen, SP1 appears to be well-received, with testers reporting better laptop battery life, faster networking, and improved wake-from-sleep speeds. There’s still no word on when the final release of SP1 will hit, but if you’re in Microsoft’s tester program, SP1 RC1 is available online now.

Just as we expected, Microsoft is getting official with its Windows Media Center Internet TV feature, which is set to go live in beta fashion tomorrow morning. According to Microsoft, US-based users of Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate will soon be able to download a simple update that will enable them to “enjoy a range of television and video content on their PCs and TV sets [with a Media Center Extender of some sort] without a TV tuner in their PC.” The streaming content will all be ad-supported “by an advertising platform provided by YuMe,” which means that you’ll be getting it gratis. The programming reportedly “comes from MSN Video,” and just over 100 hours of it will be available when the beta begins. To whet your appetite, a few notables that will be available are “full episodes of TV shows such as ‘Arrested Development,’ full-length music concerts by artists such as Chris Cornell, Snoop Dogg, Elton John, Pink, John Mayer and the Pussycat Dolls, movie trailers, news segments from MSNBC, and sports clips from FOX Sports.”

Just in case Linksys and D-Link’s introductions weren’t enough to satisfy, Microsoft is now announcing yet another partner in its refreshed Extenders for Windows Media Center effort. Beginning in “early 2008,” owners of HP’s current 42- and 47-inch MediaSmart LCD HDTVs will be able to utilize all of the features of the Media Center Extender platform sans any additional hardware. According to Microsoft, users will simply download a software update for their set, after which they’ll be able to kick back and enjoy a little Windows Media Center Internet TV while basking in the glory that is added functionality.
