Contrary to what LG coerced us into believing at CEDIA, its Netflix / Blu-ray-lovin’ BD300 will actually be sold a full $50 cheaper than the previously quoted $399.95. Circuit City has the deck up for pre-order right this very moment for $349.99 (okay, so maybe that’s not a full $50, but c’mon), and better still, the retailer is listing an October 10th release date. Now that Netflix has inked deals with CBS, ABC and Starz, there’s just one question left: are you in for three fifty?
[Thanks, Joshua]

Didn’t see anything that particularly suited your fancy at CEDIA? Then feast your eyes on CEATEC. As the Japan-based trade show hastily approaches, out pops a mind-boggling new home theater package from Panasonic. The system will include one of its marvelous 103-inch plasma HDTVs, a Blu-ray player and at least one set of fancy 3D goggles. Hailed as a world’s first in some form or fashion, the Full HD 3D package utilizes an undisclosed format “employed by major Hollywood film studios” to “distribute full HD images of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels to each eye via synchronized shutter glasses.” Panny is hoping to promote the technology and possibly get a leg up on Samsung (our assumption) by impressing wealthy homeowners and members of the Blu-ray Disc Association. As expected, there’s no mention of a price, but rest assured — you’ll be stuck choosing between this and a new BMW.

If you’ll recall, Integra surprised at last year’s CEDIA by trotting out its DHS-8.8 HD DVD player; this year, the company has quietly (silently, in fact) released its plainly styled DBS-6.9 Blu-ray deck. While the design may not suit your fancy, it’s far from being the ugliest BD player at the Expo, and reportedly, the Profile 1.1 unit will retail for a buck under $600 whenever it decides to ship. We can already tell you’re uninterested based on the price alone, but feel free to peruse the gallery at Engadget HD if you’re hungry for pics.

The whole Profile 1.0 thing kind of put a damper on Sharp’s latest Blu-ray players, but since they were showcased at the company’s CEDIA booth, we figured it prudent to take a few snapshots and pass ‘em along. Design wise, the two are exceptionally similar, and we can’t say with good faith that the HP50U is really worth the extra coin. Hit the gallery over at Engadget HD and see if you can pick the two apart… and, go!

Sony’s latest high-end Blu-ray player was sitting pretty at the outfit’s CEDIA booth, so we did exactly what you figured we would — stop by and snap some pictures. Though the unit wasn’t exactly compact, the build quality seemed sufficient and the design was suitably simple. As you very well know by now, the gallery is over at Engadget HD.

Pioneer didn’t bring a whole lot of firepower to this year’s CEDIA (though it did toss in 16 new speaker models), but the star of its show was definitely the über-expensive Elite BDP-09FD Blu-ray player. Thankfully, the company had a couple of units setup for photographing, one of which was dissected within a glass case. Needless to say, we snapped images from each, giving you a rare look at what makes this thing worth $2,199. As with most of its Elite components (HDTVs notwithstanding), this unit was also on the chunky side, but it’s still a beauty in our eyes. The gallery awaits your attention.

While some other manufacturers are churning out Blu-ray decks with price tags closer to the magical $200 mark, Sony’s bucking that trend by aiming squarely at those with bulging wallets and even fatter egos. The November-bound BDP-S5000ES one-ups the BDP-S350 by being BD-Live-capable (as opposed to BD-Live-ready) and boasts an Ethernet jack, external flash memory port, a 1GB Sony Micro Vault Tiny (gee, thanks!), Quick Start mode for getting those BDs spinning quicker and an ultra-special 14-bit HD video processor, which “improves standard-definition and high-definition picture quality with the help of HD Reality Enhancer and Super Bit Mapping technologies.” Infringing on Toshiba’s latest playground is the highly-touted Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology, which unsurprisingly upconverts DVDs to 1080p in order to make the most of your splendid DVD collection. You’ll also find niceties such as an RS-232C / IR input, BRAVIA Sync and an XMB-inspired user interface — now, if only we could find the secret sauce that makes this package worth the $2,000 asking price. (Psst… full release after the cut.)

C’mon Sharp — we’re cool with your $350 BD-HP21U Blu-ray player not supporting Profile 2.0, but are you seriously trying to pass off a has-been deck for a whopping $450? The AQUOS BD-HP50U, also announced today at CEDIA, boasts Profile 1.1 compatibility, built-in RS-232C / IR ports, HDMI 1.3 and the company’s Quick Start feature. Anything there worth the $449.99 asking price? Nah, we thought not. Check the complete (uninspiring) release after the break.

Yeah, you read that correctly — the obsessive audiophiles / videophiles at the Criterion Collection use Sony’s PlayStation 3 as its reference Blu-ray player. In all honesty, we can’t say we’re too surprised. Time and again, Sony’s latest console has been rated very highly as a dedicated BD deck, and the plentiful firmware updates ensure that it’s always at the forefront of whatever interactive functionality is next. This snippet of factual goodness was extracted from a recent writeup that took an in-depth look at how the CC would be revamping its home theater, and even famed calibration guru Joe Kane gave his approval at using the console for playing back Blu-ray Discs. The real kicker? They also settled upon a DVIGear HDMI cable over one of those obscenely overpriced Ogre cables — and that was after running clean out of coat hangers.

Remember how your curiosity level shot through the roof when Pioneer abruptly discontinued the BDP-LX70A Blu-ray player in the UK? We’re willing to bet this is why. Announced over on Pioneer’s European website, we’re being treated to three fresh faces — the Profile 2.0-compliant BDP-LX91, Designer BDP-LX08 and BDP-LX71 — along with one familiar face (the BDP-51FD). All of the new units will feature 1080p24 support, HDMI 12-Bit Deep Color support, KURO LINK, DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby True HD compatibility and professional-quality Wolfson Digital Audio Converters (DACs). As for pricing and availability other than Europe, your guess is as good as ours, but we are told to expect the BDP-LX71 in September, the BDP-51FD / BDP-LX08 in October and the BDP-LX91 “later on in the winter.” For more on Pioneer’s European onslaught, head on over to Engadget HD.

It’s right around the midway point between last CES and the one to come, and for Philips, that means it’s time to dump a few new HDTVs onto the unsuspecting public. Announced today from atop a New York City hotel, the outfit got official with its 5000, 7000 and Eco series of LCD HDTVs. The 5000 FlatTV lineup includes 32- ($799), 42- ($1,799), 47- ($2,099) and 52-inch ($2,899) flavors, all of which are bathed in glossy black and feature HDMI 1.3a inputs. The Eco sets tout “several power-saving features such as a proprietary dimming technology” and arrive in 42-, 47- and 52-inch sizes ($1,099 to $2,299). Lastly, the 7000 Series ($1,699 to $2,699) — or Ultimate TVs, as Philips likes to say — offers up 120Hz ClearLCD / Perfect Pixel HD technology, an “invisible” speaker system and four HDMI-CEC connectors. For what it’s worth, Philips is also re-introducing its Profile 1.1-compliant BDP7200 Blu-ray player, which has already been reviewed and brushed aside in anticipation of fresher Profile 2.0 decks.

If the idea of a receiver is just too lowbrow for you, check out Denon’s processor/amplifier separates, the AVP/POA-A1HDCI (’AVP’ for the processor, ‘POA’ for the amp). Six HDMI 1.3 inputs, two parallel HDMI outputs and Silicon Optix Realta video processing are some processor highlights; the amp packs in 10 channels at 150-watts. While you’re at it, why settle for a Blu-ray player when you can get a dedicated transport? That back panel picture of the DVD-2500BTCI is no prototype unit — all you get is a power cord, HDMI output, and RS-232. Spin those bits off the Blu-ray disc and send them on to the AVP-A1HDCI for decoding. Pricing is securely in the “if you have to ask…” category: $7k for the AVP-A1HDCI, $7k for the POA-A1HDCI and $1200 for the DVD-2500BTCI.

The folks over at CNET aren’t wasting a moment getting to know Panasonic’s latest Blu-ray player, so why should you? Reviewers started off by praising Panny for getting a Profile 1.1-compliant player out before the actual deadline, and minor gripes about the DMP-BD10A (namely, the remote and the fold-down door) have been addressed satisfactorily. Additionally, it was noted that audiophiles would find lots to love courtesy of its ability to output DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD soundtracks in bitstream format, and sticklers for image quality are likely to be equally impressed. Put simply, this unit “performed excellently by properly deinterlacing 1080i signals to 1080p without artifacts or jaggies,” and it managed to measure up quite well with other highly-regarded BD players when playing back films. All in all, the BD30 was awarded a 7.4 out of 10 rating, and we’re pretty certain that adding an Ethernet jack and built-in decoders for high-resolution audio formats would’ve made this thing even more attractive.
