Now that the BlackBerry Bold’s made its official North American debut, there’s a lot of talk about a video Mobile Computer did of the Bold getting blown away browsing head to head with an iPhone 3G over WiFi — but there’s a slight problem there: the Bold was actually using 3G and EDGE. Yeah, that’s not a fair fight — and given how flaky the iPhone 3G’s data speeds can be, it actually reflects quite well on the Bold. Head to head on WiFi, the Bold does seem a tick slower, but we’ll let you judge that for yourselves — videos after the break.

Well, it looks like that long, painful wait is finally over. According to all kinds of tipsters, the BlackBerry Bold touches down for the first time in North America (in its home country of Canada, obviously) come August 21st (that’s this Thursday, in case you don’t own a calendar, computer, or have any friends). That’s right — the Bold will land on Rogers (where else?) with a price tag set somewhere between the dark valley of $300 and $400, according to Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie. Reports say the phone will be available from other carriers by the end of the week, though we don’t have any definitive rumblings that confirm such heavenly ideas. You’ll know more when we do, of course.

Always looking to make lemonade out of lemons, the self-proclaimed BGizzle took the opportunity to inform prospective (and current) BlackBerry Bold owners of the handset’s fragile nature. To no one’s surprise, the naked Bold didn’t stand up too well to pavement when dropped from about two feet — maybe this is where a real metal bezel would come in handy? Anywho, we’re not told whether or not the essential functions were fubared, but we’d recommend taking his advice and snapping up a skin / case before welcoming it to the world.

We understand the need to catch eyes these days, and while Rogers will certainly not be the first nor last to promote a new piece of kit with an obscenely large version of said kit, this one just takes brobdingnagian marketing to a new plateau. The absolutely gigantic Rogers Bold launch kit includes a plethora of Bold flyers, informational pamphlets and all sorts of other goodies that’ll be handed out to prospective buyers shortly. The real question is: who gets to take this thing home once the buzz dies down?

Movistar’s Chilean outpost has now become — somewhat surprisingly, may we add — the very first carrier in the world to launch the BlackBerry Bold and put it into subscribers’ hands. The carrier’s making sure everyone knows what a coup they’ve managed to pull off, too, proudly proclaiming “FIRST ONES IN THE WORLD” with a red banner draped across the Bold’s image on Movistar’s site. Pricing seems a little high at 299,990 Chilean pesos (about $588) on a two-year contract, but hey, you’ve gotta pay to play; just how badly do you want to be one of the first people on the face of the planet (John Mayer notably excepted) to put this thing to use?

You know how Stewart Copeland plays that insanely slick triplet hi-hat part in “Message in a Bottle,” and every time you hear it you wonder how it’s possible for him to stay so perfectly in time? And you know how his drums fit so perfectly in the pocket with Sting and Andy Summers on pretty much anything The Police ever touched despite the fact they all hated each other? Well, Copeland’s “soundtrack” for the BlackBerry Bold — commissioned by RIM — should rid you of all of those amazing memories real fast. The drummer provided six ringtones, an alarm sound, and a Bold “theme” for the company’s new device, yet not one of them is remotely pleasant to listen to. In a word or two? They stink.

Research In Motion’s forthcoming BlackBerry Bold just got a little bit closer to reality. The device — which is said to be making its appearance on shelves around August — has shown up in the FCC’s files, getting the sensuous, loving treatment only the Federal Communications Commission can provide. We had a chance to play with Research In Motion’s upcoming BlackBerry Bold handset tonight, and we came away happily impressed. To start things off, the keyboard felt easy enough to use, at least easier than the 8830 we’re often forced to use for work email. Gone are the sharp protrusions, replaced with a nice flat surface upon which to click.
Of note was the Bold’s user interface. Menus are clean and easy to read (despite some strange icon choices, see below), and response time is about as quick as one could hope, especially compared to other phones out there that seem to struggle with their operating systems.

According to reports crossing the wires this morning, Research In Motion is expected to delay the release of its next-gen BlackBerry Bold. The Boy Genius is claiming that software issues, battery life problems, and overheating are causing the hold-up, which will move the street date back to mid-August as opposed to the presumed July release on AT&T. There’s been no confirmation from RIM on the news, but that’s not stopping analysts from predicting the move will lower the company’s second quarter earnings outlook. We’re pretty sure it’ll make businessmen with twitchy thumbs none-too-happy as well.
[Thanks, Sam]

See that image above? Yeah, that’s a sexy new side angle of RIM’s BlackBerry Bold, and it’s coming to us courtesy of AT&T. Just as Sprint did with its fashionable Instinct, AT&T is launching a promotional site for the forthcoming BlackBerry in order to drum up interest and get you (re)informed. Straight from the carrier’s mouth, we’ve got GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA support, integrated WiFi / GPS, 480 x 320 resolution display, a side-loaded memory slot, 1GB of built-in storage, a 624MHz CPU, 128MB of Flash memory, Bluetooth 2.0 with handsfree support and up to 5-hours of GSM talk time (13 days in standby). You’ll notice that the operator makes no mention of an exact release date, but we’re crossing our fingers and sticking to that leaked July timeframe until we hear otherwise.
[Thanks, Daryl]

It was simply inevitable: someone was going to lay the iPhone and BlackBerry Bold down beside one another, and if John Mayer won’t stop sending himself emails long enough to do it, CrackBerry’s sister site will. There’s really nothing here that you couldn’t put together yourself from checking out galleries and videos of each device separately, but feel free to humor your sick mind by glancing over the comparative images in the read link below or examining the vid waiting after the jump.

RIM’s hotly-anticipated BlackBerry Bold has only been received by a select few, but the fortunate folks over at Howard Chui managed to snag a pre-production unit and give it a good lookin’ at. Aside from showering us with a plethora of snapshots from a variety of angles, we’re also told that the plastic used “feels a little cheaper” than that on the 8800, outgoing sound quality “is terrific,” incoming sound quality could use some work and reception seemed much improved from the 8800. We know, it’s not a full-blown review or anything, but it’s still apt to whet your appetite until the real deal shows up en masse.

See how easy it is everyone? All that’s required to snag a BlackBerry Bold well before its public release is to become a Grammy award-winning artist, sell out shows worldwide, date a smattering of superstars and convince Fender to create and sell your own branded guitar. While you’re off working on step one, John Mayer is living it up with his brand new BlackBerry Bold. Granted, he can’t claim to be the very first with said handset, but it’s likely the first completely legitimate edition let loose. Of course, once you’ve landed the Curve and MacBook Air before everyone else on the planet, snagging a Bold is just child’s play.

Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM’s hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions — release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren’t official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we’d say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn’t you?
Update: We got in touch with InfoSync World, where these numbers were published, and they told us that they were making estimates based on pre-release info. So nope, these aren’t close to official — but it’s always fun to dream, right?

Granted, we haven’t heard anything thus far about which carrier would be offering up the recently-made-official BlackBerry Bold, but we can’t say we’re too shocked to hear that it will indeed be AT&T. In a report highlighting the recent boost in RIM’s stock price, it’s noted that AT&T will be “the exclusive carrier for the Bold in the US,” though we have all ideas the other major US carriers will be following suit shortly, probably with redubbed handsets. We know, you’re hungry for a price to mull over, but sadly, it’s not meal time just yet.
