Canon PowerShot SX1 and company eyes-on

March 4th, 2009 by

As with FujiFilm’s latest bunch, we were quite shocked to see Canon’s newest offering out and about in Hannover. Granted, most of the good one were caged under lock and key (yes, we’re talking to you, elusive PowerShot SX1), but that didn’t stop us from mashing our lens (and lips, we won’t lie) up against the glass and pulling the shutter. You already know about the specs, now check out the skins and the European model names. Sassy.

Canon’s new PowerShot D10 is rugged, bulbous, and waterproof

February 26th, 2009 by

Well, we dug up some hands-on pics of that new waterproof Canon PowerShot D10 we’ve been hearing about recently. Obviously, since it’s aimed at the “sport” set it has to be available in “camouflage,” and since it’s waterproof it has to be sort of bulky. As for the stats, this guy rocks a 12.1-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 processor, 3x zoom, image stabilization, and a 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II display that’s said to be twice as bright as the company’s standard LCD II. In addition, the camera is waterproof up to 10 meters, shock resistant, and the display sits behind a 2mm shield — if you should happen to drop this off the roof of an evil genuis’s high-tech lair (or into a pitcher of beer), no worries. Going for about $329, available at the end of April. Hit the read link for the pics.

Canon’s latest batch of cameras get the hands-on treatment

February 19th, 2009 by

Canon certainly isn’t cutting any corners with its pre-PMA batch of digital cameras, and the folks at PhotographyBlog look to be doing their best to keep up with them all, with them now churning out some hands-on looks with just about all of ‘em, plus a couple of Canon’s new lenses for good measure. Those include the SX200 IS pictured above, which they describe as “bigger and chunkier” than its rival Panasonic DMC-TZ7, as well as the “sleek and sophisticated” A2100 IS, the “toy-camera-like” D10, and a number of other compact shooters that stay a bit closer to their predecessors in terms of appearance. Of particular note to more serious photographers, Canon was also showing off its new TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens, which is replacing the 17-year-old original model, and its new TS-E 17mm f/4L lens, which is apparently the world’s shortest focal length Tilt-Shift lens with full-frame 35mm coverage. Hit up the link below to check out the whole lot, just be prepared to do a bit of digging.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS coming to US in April, nine others unveiled

February 17th, 2009 by

Not to be outdone by Sony, Samsung, or FujiFilm, Canon has unveiled nearly a dozen digital cameras bound for the US ahead of March’s PMA. Of the ten, the big guy is that 10 megapixel SX1 IS we originally heard about last September, which sports 1080p Full HD movie mode and a built-in HDMI connector. Not too far off is the SX200, SD970 and the already-leaked SD960 / SD780, which all record 720p and also feature HDMI ports. The more rugged D10 boasts it’s freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, shockproof up to four feet, and can withstand depths up to 33 feet deep. As for the rest, well, they’ve certainly got more appealing price tags. Full rundown of the specs after the break.

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS, SD960 IS make brief, semi-official debut

February 17th, 2009 by

These aren’t completely official just yet, but an impromptu appearance on Canon’s own website certainly seems to indicate that the company’s new PowerShot SD780 IS and SD960 IS should be getting the official treatment sooner rather than later. Both of these are 12-megapixel compacts and, most notably, each pack an HD movie mode (720p) and the requisite HDMI port to go along with it, along with Canon’s trademark DIGIC IV image processor, and a 3x optical zoom on the SD780 (pictured above) and a 4x on the slightly larger SD960 (after the break). Unfortunately, there’s no indication of a price, but both are apparently on track for a release sometime in April in a range of colors. Oh, and as if those weren’t enough, we’ve also seen a stable of new models names leaked, though there aren’t any images to back these up: A480, A1100 IS, A2100 IS, SD780 IS, SD960 IS, SD1200 IS, SX1 IS and SX200 IS. Is PMA just around the bend, or what?

[Thanks, Craig]

Canon patent application offers solution for Live View autofocus issues

February 11th, 2009 by

Canon’s Live View implementation may not be a deal-breaker for most DSLR users, but there’s certainly plenty of room for improvement, and a recent Canon patent application suggests that the company could possibly be aiming to do just that. The short of it is that the company seems to have found a way to overcome the inherent problems of employing so-called phase-difference autofocus in Live View, which is caused in part by the physical limitations of the mirror and the AF sensor (hit up the read link for some more background). Canon’s solution, it seems, is to place the phase-difference AF sensor below the image sensor instead of above it, and make use of a semi-transparent mirror that’d allow for simultaneous transfer of light to the image sensor and the AF sensor. The average user would see the changes in the form of three new shooting modes, including a Standard Viewfinder Mode, a Fast AF Live View Mode, and a Full Live View mode, which each shift the position of the mirrors for the task at hand. What’s more, while the patent application doesn’t address it specifically, it would seem that this same method could also bring autofocus to DSLR video or, at the very least, video recorded via Live View.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXVIII: Canon doesn’t suck edition

February 3rd, 2009 by

You know what Canon doesn’t make? Right, Vacuum cleaners. Obvious to us but according to the site English Russian, a large Russian electronics supplier recently bought what they believed to be genuine Canon-made Vacuum cleaners. Why not, after all, that logo slapped all over the manuals and device is a straight rip from the Japanese company. The KIRF-co even has the audacity to host a Russian site registered to Gold Space Inc. at www.canon-electonics.com (the official Canon Electronics site is canon-elec.co.jp) which, ambient music aside, is nothing but a portal into an empty consumer abyss. A call to the company’s New York support number results in an “invalid number” recording. Surpising.

Canon gives its workers time out — for love

January 26th, 2009 by

As you’re no doubt aware, Japan is a country where the twelve hour workday is pretty well standard, the population is aging faster than any other in the world, and the economy is all “recessionized” — not the most auspicious circumstances for makin’ babies. With a national birthrate of just 1.34, the populace is in danger of disappearing — but don’t fear! Canon has a plan. The company is encouraging its employees to leave work at 5:30 PM twice a week, hoping that a couple shameless early-off days will relieve some stress and encourage folks to use their time, well, productively. In other news, we have it from a reliable source that Bad Company album sales are at an all time high in Tokyo.

Hack provides Liveview Canon EOS DSLRs with video recording

January 25th, 2009 by

If you’re just now starting to come to grips with the fact that Canon’s utterly succulent EOS 5D Mark II is just way, way out of reach, here’s a little something to lessen the impact of your inferiority complex. An enterprising young buck with a passion to bring video capture abilities to other EOS cameras figured out a way to enable that very capability on all Liveview EOS DSLRs. Of course, there’s still the whole “manual focus” requirement — which means that the bulk of your captures will be way out of focus — but it’s a new feature for your existing camera nonetheless. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, why don’t you just push out an official update to add this into more cams, Canon? We mean, can you imagine the look on Nikon’s face if you really came through?

Gigapan Imager used to craft 1,474 megapixel image of Obama’s inauguration

January 25th, 2009 by

In theory, at least, we already knew that the Gigapan Imager was capable of some amazing things. This, friends, is proof. David Bergman strapped the device and his Canon G10 onto a rail at Barack Obama’s inauguration and snapped 220 images. After giving his MacBook Pro 6.5 hours to compile a two gigabyte image, he hosted it up on his website for people to zoom around on. We’ll caution you — you can easy kill a few hours checking out faces and such if you end up visiting the read link, but it’s totally worth it.

Canon retires PowerShot A470, replaces with A480

January 15th, 2009 by

After a year of duty, the PowerShot A470 is finally withdrawing from the retail market. In its stead, Canon has announced the 10 megapixel A480. It’s 25% smaller than its predecessor and features a 3.3x optical zoom (up to 4x digital), 2.5-inch LCD screen, and a DIGIC III processor. The company is also touting a simplified button scheme and a choice of four colors to match your fashion tastes: red, blue, black, and silver. No definitive word on a US release, but Europeans can look forward to these in February for around £129.00 (US$188).

How would you change Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II?

January 2nd, 2009 by

Okay, so besides the obvious black dot / band issues that Canon doesn’t seem to care much about, how else would you tweak the EOS 5D Mark II? Said DSLR has proven itself as a champion in the low-light / video space, thought there’s like, no competition at all thus far in the latter department. Are you comfortable with the grip? Is the UI friendly enough to navigate? Too light or heavy? Does it make you weep in joy each time you hold it? For those who’ve laid down the coin for this, we’re sure you’ve got a few things to say — so vent in comments below, won’t you?

Canon EOS 5D Mark II review roundup

December 20th, 2008 by

This one’s been a long time coming, but we wanted to make absolutely sure you had quite enough reading material to make the most informed decision on this incredibly expensive (albeit quite valuable, as you’ll soon find out) DSLR. Reviews the web over shout practically the same thing: the EOS 5D Mark II is astounding. In most every important area, the device simply excelled. Image quality was remarkable, the 1080p video capture was stellar (though the lack of Auto Focus was a legitimate knock against it) and low-light performance was simply awesome. Hailed as a respectable upgrade from the original 5D, it was found to strike “a great balance between resolution, quality and performance,” and most outlets found it worthwhile even if you’re not interested in capturing video. Frankly, we can’t even begin to scratch the surface of all the nuances here, but we’ll certainly point you in the right directions to get all the knowledge you need.

First Blu-ray Disc / DVD hybrid announced in Japan

December 19th, 2008 by

It sure took long enough to happen, but one of HD DVD’s biggest benefits has finally made it over to the Blu-ray side. Yep, we’re talking about a Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc, with a single-layer of Blu on one side and a standard DVD on the other. Not surprisingly, the action’s going down first in Japan, with Code Blue emergency helicopter doctor Blu-ray BOX (yes, seriously) as the first hybrid title. There’s no word on when (or if) this technology will make it to US soil, but the sooner the better — nothing like a little inbuilt backwards compatibility to ease the mind.

Canon acknowledges, doesn’t fix black dot and band problems on 5D Mark II

December 19th, 2008 by

Canon acknowledges, doesn't fix black dot and band problems on 5D Mark II

It’s been released, unboxed, and adored by many. But, like other eagerly anticipated bodies from Canon, the 5D Mark II hasn’t been entirely trouble-free for the early adopters. The company is at least stepping forward and confirming that the new model’s two most commonly reported problems do indeed exist — but isn’t going so far as to fix them just yet. The first issue is called the “Black dot” phenomenon, where bright point light sources (like streetlights at a distance) result in a grouping of dark pixels immediately to their right, as seen above. The second issue is ugly vertical banding, apparently appearing only in sRAW1 mode. Canon has no advice on the first problem, but says you can avoid the other one simply by not shooting in sRAW1. Surely millions of photogs are wondering why they didn’t think of that.

Canon PowerShot G10 reviewed

October 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve always had a soft spot for Canon’s G-series of prosumer compacts, and it looks like the new G10 won’t be any exception — Photography Blog just put the boxy camera through its paces and found that it’s “undoubtedly the best ever” in the line. High marks were particularly given to the new wider-angle 28-140mm lens (which suffers less barrel distortion than the G9), higher-res LCD screen, and the new exposure dial, which allows you to fine-tune exposure settings without a trip to the menus. The new 14.7 megapixel sensor didn’t receive the same praise, however: ISO 400 images were quite noisy, and the 800 and 1600 settings were “virtually unusable.” That’s not exactly news for the G-series, but it’s pretty unfortunate — especially considering that the G10’s $499 pricetag edges into low-end DSLR territory. Still, if you’re looking for a compact with deep manual controls and real optics, it sounds like the G10 is worth a look — hit the read link for the full review.

Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II displays multiple LP-E6 battery capacities

October 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

You may think you know everything there is to know about Canon’s marvelous EOS 5D Mark II, but have you heard of this tidbit? Hailed as the first DSLR to “manage” multiple batteries, this here camera includes technology to read up to six separate LP-E6 batteries and display data about them right on the rear LCD. The LP-E6 cell includes an embedded microchip with a unique 8-character serial number; after it’s installed once and “registered” in your EOS 5D Mark II body, the camera then displays each cell’s serial number, the last time it was charged, the number of shots taken since the last charge, its remaining capacity in 1% increments and its recharge performance. It’s a small inclusion, sure, but for pros who go 18+ hours on a single set, we can imagine this coming in handy when trying to select which battery to use on the next excursion.

[Thanks, Peter]

Canon EOS 50D review roundup

October 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you skipped over the EOS 40D in anticipation for the next best thing, and you don’t feel like liquidating your kid’s college fund in order to procure the EOS 5D Mark II, the EOS 50D has likely been blinking fiercely on your radar. The intarwebz as a whole had a chance to sit down and scrutinize the decidedly mid-range DSLR, and overall, impressions were pretty positive. For starters, just about everyone felt that it was more than a worthy addition to Canon’s line, citing “a significant number of refinements to a proven design,” a fantastic VGA LCD monitor and expectedly great image quality. Critics also found an improved interface, improved white balance and an ISO setting that was perfectly acceptable up to 3,200 (and 6,400 in a pinch). For DSLR newcomers, the 50D is a pretty safe bet; the only question comes in when trying to decide whether to upgrade from the 40D. Our take? Save the loot and spend it on some decent glass.

Canon EOS 40D owner hacks camera, records silent movie

September 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

This enterprising EOS 40D owner wants a DSLR that records video, too — and he’s taking action. This hack uses CHDK — the free firmware enhancement for Canon PowerShot cameras — and LiveView to capture video to the camera’s CF Card. There are still a few issues: LiveView shuts down after a period of inactivity, video can’t be transfered via USB, and unlike your $79 consumer grade camera, the EOS 40D won’t record audio. But what’s a little challenge in the face of a good camera mod? There’s no word on file format, frame rate or resolution (though the camera’s display weighs in at 320 x 240), but there are lots of other juicy details available once you hit the read link. And be sure to catch the video after the break.

Canon’s G10, SX1 IS, and more get the hands-on treatment

September 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We already caught of preview of Canon new EOS 5D Mark II 21-megapixel monster, but if you’re curious about Canon’s other new camera offerings, you may want to hit up Photography Blog, which has gone hands-on with each of ‘em. That includes the PowerShot G10 (pictured above), the PowerShot SX1 IS / SX10 IS, the Digital IXUS 980 IS and 870 IS and, of course, the aforementioned EOS 5D Mark II, just in case you need another look at it. Unfortunately, they don’t have much in the way of first impressions just yet, or any sample shots, but they do at least have a comparison between the G10 and the earlier G9 model for those considering an upgrade, and plenty of high res photos of each camera to let you examine every nook and cranny.
