For shame. We know good and well engineers can concoct energy-generating garb that actually looks good enough to wear, but evidently those fashion-minded gurus weren’t hired for this project. Granted, we have all ideas the image you’re quizzically staring at above is NTT’s first go at a pair of power-packing sandals, but there’s clearly a good ways to go before these things are cute / safe enough to wear on the streets. Might we suggest shoving all that hardware inside of something? The “all hanging out” look just isn’t working here.

Even with today’s wireless video game controllers, you can’t stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you’ll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we’ve seen, it has two USB ports so you’ll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we’ll be all over it, ’cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge — what with the world’s dwindling energy supply and all.

Compared to other cellphone charging pads out there, Connectland’s USB Multi-Cellular Phone Charger is mighty minuscule. The box gets power via a USB plug and then pipes it to eight different connectors that fit into mobiles from Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, etc. We dig that Brando throws in a “foam rubber” to keep this in while traveling, but honestly, would it really take more than two unanticipated jaunts to break every last prong from this thing? She’s $18 if you’re shaking your head from left to right.

For any iPhone or iPod user brimming with energy that might otherwise go wasted on aimless fidgeting, Swedish designer Peter Thuvander has devised the perfect way for you to marry your hyperactivity and your love for your Apple device: the iYo YOYO Induction Charger. While playing with the charger as you would an ordinary yo-yo, a small lithium-ion battery is charged inside, which in turn powers your device. The idea sounds great, and if it ever gets out of the concept stage we look forward to having our idle hands finally used as something other than the Devil’s playthings. Check out a video of the device in rendered action after the break.

It’s a common issue, really. Having to peel that sticky, icky silicon skin from the Wiimote each time you try to swap out the batteries or plop it down in a recharging station is a real pain, but TeknoCreations has a better way. By utilizing a contactless induction charging system, its InCharge remote charger can actually reinvigorate Lithium Polymer battery packs that are encased within those newfangled silicon grips that the Big N recommends so heavily. The system reportedly offers a 25-hour battery life, and unlike contact-based chargers, the aforementioned dirt and grit won’t gum up the juicing process. The InCharge Wiimote charger should be available real soon for $34.99, and for PS3 owners feeling all left out, fret not — the company just received certification to go forward with a similar product for the SIXAXIS.

We know what you’re thinking: “I’m totally not going to buy this.” After all, who really wants a kludgy recharger that isn’t reusable without buying an extra fill pack? For those still willing to give this idea a chance, you may want to point your attention to smartplanet’s review of the Medis 24-7 Power Pack, which utilizes liquid fuel cell technology to output one-watt for charging small handheld devices. In testing, it took around an hour to bring a halfway charged iPod touch to full capacity, which is pretty much right in line with estimates. Unfortunately, we’re still not digging the “recycle or refill” approach, though we are appreciative that Medis is pushing the former. Give the linked writeup a look — maybe you’ll fall strangely in love, after all.

Details on this one are remarkably skimpy, but here are the facts as we know them. A fire caused around $30,000 worth of damage to a mobile home in Delaware this past week, but thankfully, the Millsboro and Indian River firefighters found no one home at the time of the incident. The culprit? A “malfunctioning cellphone charger that ignited the wall covering in a bedroom.” That’s it, folks — no manufacturer, no brand name, nothing. In other words, unplug your chargers when you leave the house… or store your home in a fireproof safe, either one.

We haven’t heard a whole lot from M2E Power since it burst onto the scene last year with promises of powering your gadgets with movement, but the company now says that it’s made some real progress with its wonder device, and it’s claiming that it’ll actually be available sometime next year. According to the company, the charger will let you get about 30 to 60 minutes of talk time on your cellphone after six hours of cumulative motion, and you’ll of course be able to use it with other gadgets as well. As you can see above, the charger unit can also simply be plugged into an outlet to be topped off if you need a slightly quicker fix. What’s more, M2E also says that it has had discussions with some unspecified cellphone makers to build the generator directly into a phone, although it says it’ll take “at least two years” before something like that is commercially available.

In all honesty, USBfever almost nailed this one. The $22.99 in-car charger plugs right into your cigarette socket and gives motorists their cigarette outlet back along with 4 charging USB ports. The one tweak we wish it would’ve made? Replace that cig adapter with a traditional AC outlet. Yeah, yeah — that would make the whole thing a lot bigger with the necessary power inverter, but you can’t deny that it would be way more useful. Version 2, anyone?

If you find yourself burning through your MacBook or iBook batteries at an alarming rate, perhaps you require a charging solution that’s, shall we say… more robust. That’s where Oncore Power’s psychotic 6-bay charging station comes into play. Never again will you have to suffer the indignation of a powerless laptop with the company’s all-in-one solution to charge every brick in your arsenal at once. The device will juice up three batteries at once, letting you stagger the two bays of three slots so you’re always one stylish wrist snap away from sweet, sweet power. Sure, it costs $395 (and presumably more for the version with included batteries), but you can’t put a price on peace of mind, can you? Oh, wait. You can. It’s $395.

Two 4x Wiimote charging stations in a week? Um, okay. If, for whatever reason, the Nintendo-licensed charger we saw just days ago wasn’t right for you (read: too expensive to import), we’ve got yet another option for you to consider. Penguin United — which gets brownie points on name alone — has just unveiled the Quad Charge Station for Wii, which utilizes Li-ion batteries that promise 13 full hours of playtime from each Wiimote. Additionally, it can juice up your controllers in just 4 hours, and there’s even LEDs to inform you of how close to full each one is. The real kicker? The colored Wiimote straps that PU tosses in — huzzah! Include one in your next party for $44.99.

Motorola so had this down pat last year, but we suppose O2 is just showcasing its pedal-powered charging system now that such devices are all the rage. Just days after we had a look at two unorthodox chargers from Orange, along comes rival O2 with a bicycle-related alternative. Reportedly, the eco-friendly device will be demonstrated at the O2 Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park, but unfortunately, each of the demo bikes will be stationary. Still no word on whether O2 has a mind to take this thing commercial, but for cyclists the world over, here’s to hoping it does.

For those fortunate enough to be planning a trip to this year’s Glastonbury, you can rest assured that forgetting your mobile charger won’t be the worst thing that could possibly happen. Reportedly, Orange will erect a seven-meter high recharge Pod tent in which patrons can stop by and reinvigorate their winded handset. Said tent will boast 500-watt solar panels and a 500-watt wind turbine in order to generate electricity for the lifeless phones, and Orange is hoping to juice up 100 devices per hour. If only such conveniences were everywhere…

Oh sure, there’s a plethora of portable USB chargers out there to keep most every cellphone around juiced up for one last call, but those handling a Palm handset with the polarizing Multi-Connector have long been shut out cold — until now. Tech Center Labs has just come to the rescue with its Tiny Emergency FuelCell, which holds a single AA and enables power to be passed along to Centros and any other Palm / Treo device with the proprietary connector. Best of all, the pocket-friendly device is just $9.95 (or $10.95 with a bundled battery). Not a bad way to spend a Hamilton if you’re a Palm lover.

Sure, there are already a handful of options out there for extending the life of your iPhone / iPod battery, but since when have we been ones to gripe about a little competition? Kensington has just introduced a standard and miniature version of its Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod, which unsurprisingly provides juice to your device’s internal battery and can be recharged simultaneously. As you could likely guess, the only differences between the two contraptions are the size, price and battery life; the 0.22-pound standard model extends play time to up to 100 hours (music) / 6 hours (talk), while the even tinier mini version livens things up for another 30 hours (music) / 3 hours (talk). Each is available now for $69.99 / $49.99.

We’ve seen self-healing materials and artificial arms, but a team of researchers hailing from UCLA have taken two fabulous ideas and wed them together to create “an artificial muscle that heals itself and generates electricity.” Put simply, the contracting / expanding of the material can generate a small electric current, which can be “captured and used to power another expansion or stored in a battery.” The scientists have relied on carbon nanotubes as electrodes rather than metal-based films that typically fail after extended usage, and in an ideal world, the research could eventually lead to (more) walking robots and highly advanced prosthetics. Integrate an AC adapter in there and we’re sold.

We were already fans of the Rottaliana MultiPot, which disguised a device-charging station and a lamp as a flowerpot, but we tend to charge our devices in the bedroom — which means the company’s new MultiBook is even more useful. Appearing at first to be just another hardcover book, the MultiBook opens to reveal several plug outlets and a lamp, and also features an alarm clock with a concealed display on the spine. That pretty much covers all the bedside bases — but given the surprising violence with which we greet our alarm clock every morning, it might be best to keep all this stuff separate. Only available in a 220V version right now for €152 ($222), no word on when it might come stateside.

USB devices do everything these days, including charge your gadgets with only the power provided by your breathing: specifically, the act of moving one’s chest in and out. Just in case you thought this required sticking a gadget down your throat, see the image above and note that it’s attached to the outside of the model’s chest. The instructions for building your own breathing powered USB charger are over at instructables, and the kit only requires simple equipment like a spare CD drive, some elastic bands, and an electric circuit. You’ve got all that lying around, ain’t ya? Well then, stick it all together and get breathing. Unfortunately, it only produces around 5 volts, so you’ll have to breath a lot whole lot to get any meaningful charging time from this invention. And don’t even think about attaching it to the cat.
