After the whole Tickle Me Elmo craze a few years back, you just knew Fisher-Price was going to ride this wave until it simply couldn’t stay afloat any longer. Elmo Live!, hailed as the “most innovative and engaging Elmo toy ever,” will officially hit store shelves tomorrow (October 14th) for $59.99, though we suspect the first batch will be snapped up in no time flat. Of course, those of you intent on retaining your sanity probably pre-ordered a few months back, but for everyone else, your battle to get one of this year’s hottest holiday gifts starts in under 24 hours. For those wondering what’s so special about this fellow, he supposedly tells jokes and makes movements that “give kids the feeling that Elmo is alive in their own homes.” Whether that’s really a good thing, however, is totally up to you.

Here’s an interesting one. That red / black Xbox 360 controller that was showcased back in July is now available to any ole consumer in the US, Canada, Latin America New Zealand and Asia, and it comes bundled with a Play & Charge Kit and red rechargeable battery for $64.99. For whatever reason, Microsoft’s totally missing a golden opportunity to cash in on the holiday shopping season by reserving the green counterpart as some “promotional item.” C’mon guys, is it really that hard to understand how irresistible a red and green gamepad tandem would be in late December?

At first glance, we assumed the completely misnamed Christmas MP3/MP4 player was merely a mephistophelean covering for an older iPod nano, but apparently, Putian Hengwang Trade Company put in the legwork and actually knocked off a DAP (or at least an interface) from Apple’s past. This creature fittingly arrives in red or black and features 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of storage, a 1.5- / 1.8-inch display, optional FM tuner and built-in speaker, a rechargeable Li-ion and support for MP3, WMA, WAV and ASF file formats. Sadly, there’s no mention of a price, release date or pickup location, but there’s a decent chance you’ll find ‘em awkwardly stacked up beside the Cross MP3 Player somewhere in Beijing.

Oh boy, oh boy! If you’re especially lucky you woke up this morning to a few wrapped boxes containing whatever it was you spotted on Engadget and have been lusting after ever since. Sure, we’d love to hear about what you got your loved ones (and maybe even a gripe or two about what you didn’t get), but we’re sure what most people have on their minds right now is their take of gifts. Merry Christmas!
P.S. -Don’t forget to check out all that ancient crap people pulled back in 2006, 2005, and 2004.

Tired of prankster kids making off with baby Jesus year after year, Dina Cellini of Bal Harbour, Florida is having GPS installed in the doll, as well as the Joseph and Mary statues. “We may need to rely on technology to save our savior,” said Cellini. Last year they tried bolting down the figures, to no avail, and this year they’ll be augmenting the GPS with a Plexiglass screen. We’re saving all our good wise man jokes for tomorrow’s festivities, but feel free to toss your own into the comments.

As if an office full of guitar-controlled lights weren’t enough to get you in the holiday spirit, along comes a self-proclaimed geek to play Jingle Bells on his graphics card. We know, it’s hard to really grasp what we mean, so jump on past the break to catch a video that will undoubtedly do our explaining for us.

While we already knew Sony’s mysterious Rolly got down to holiday tunes, this installation managed to capture our attention just a wee bit more. Rivaled only by the famed TSO project from 2005, this guitar-controlled setup transforms a traditional office into a holiday funhouse by enabling rockers to control the light patterns within the building. Open source software, dubbed Frets on Fire, was modified to generate controls for dozens of light strings around the cubicles, with the corner plant being used to “keep the beat” and the trash can fittingly being lit only when someone missed a note. Click on through to catch this madness in action — and yeah, it’s pretty evident the boss left weeks ago to enjoy the rest of ‘07 from afar.

You’d be sporting the very same expression of horror if your jolly ass was strapped to a Brando remote controlled helicopter. The rechargeable unit features a “super wide” IR remote and spare tail prop for $25. Rudolph’s wrath: free.

Just in case you missed the memo — and have subsequently wondered why the mall traffic has been just unmanageable of late — the holiday season is upon us, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by picking up one of Walletex’s newest flash drives. Granted, the firm only has Christmas and Hanukkah editions, but it is offering up a couple of motifs in each of the aforementioned flavors. The wallet-sized cards are available now in sizes ranging from 128MB to 4GB, and while you can snag one for you or a loved one for as low as $26.95, don’t expect to store too many jingles without ponying up quite a bit more.

Finally, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, Clyde, and even old Pacster get some religious iconography happening for themselves. A creative group of X-mas-and-Pac-Man-loving cats and kittens in Madrid have created a truly festive monument to the holiday… and the video game. Check the video after the break for the whole, utility-burning display in action — and commenters, feel free to translate.

Most Americans have yet to get a taste of Sony’s Rolly speakerbot, and while we may finally see the little critter, um, roll our way sometime next year according to company prez Stan Glasgow, Japan is already getting its first special edition of the lively MP3 player. Christmas Rolly — on sale immediately for ¥41,800 ($380) and shipping December 19th — comes preloaded with Japanese takes on traditional holiday favorites such as Santa Claus is Coming to Town and White Christmas, along with the accompanying pre-programmed “dance moves” — though frankly we’re at a loss as to how a two-wheeled robot gets down to Silent Night. Those folks on a budget who can’t live without the special six-pack of tunes will also be able to find them on Sony’s Christmas edition of the NW-E013 DAP, on sale next month for only ¥10,980 ($99).

It looks like the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree will be a considerably smaller energy hog this holiday season than it has been in years past, as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday that the tree will be lit up with LED lights for the first time - 30,000 of ‘em, to be specific. That’ll apparently reduce the tree’s energy consumption from 3,510 kilowatt hours per day to just 1,297 — a savings that, as the AP points out, is roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by a typical 2,000-square-foot house in a month. While it’s not clear if it’ll be used for the tree or not, the owners of Rockefeller Center also took the opportunity to show off a new 365-panel solar array on the roof of one of the complex’s buildings, which is apparently big enough to lay claim to the title of the largest privately owned solar roof in Manhattan.

A national survey of 1,200 consumers conducted by Solutions Research Group found that 3 out of 4 surveyed Americans wanted a new gadget this holiday season. The rankings went a little something like this:
- HDTV (35%)
- Windows-based notebook (20%)
- Digital camera (17%)
- Windows-based desktop computer
- GPS car navigation
- Cellphone
- Digital video camera
- Nintendo Wii
- Sony PS3
- HD DVD or Blu-ray player
So where’s Apple, the big bad daddy of consumer electronics? Well, their best showing was the MacBook with an 11 ranking followed by the iPhone at number 15. Pretty good when you consider the level of brand awareness this represents in a field of otherwise unspecified laptops and cellphones. In fact, 1-in-6 consumers are hoping for some type of Apple gear under the Chanukazaa tree this season.
