The editor-in-chief giveaway: Win Ryan Block’s swag

August 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

You know, when you’re the editor-in-chief of a site like Engadget, you tend to accumulate a lot of stuff. Companies send you all kinds of interesting promotional materials, gadgets, swag, etc. It’s great. Sometimes, though, you just let it pile up in your living room for years and years, then, when a new editor-in-chief takes over, you send all that stuff to him in about ten huge boxes. Luckily, we’ve got a way of dealing with this other than just throwing it in storage — we’re giving a ton of it away. That’s right, you could be one of the lucky readers to win a massive stash of gear recently jettisoned toward New York by Mr. Ryan Block. Here’s just a few things that are up for grabs in this (final) round:

I Am Legend (DVD), Apple iPod shuffle Sport Case, set of Zune Originals art prints, Energizer cellphone charger, Super Mario Galaxy X-mas stocking and ornament, Lair fake Zippo lighter, Heavenly Sword letter opener, Hot Shots golf balls, Nokia beer cozy, stuffed TiVo toy, Pursuit Force glove and sunglasses, plus at least four backpacks / bags filled with all kinds of funky stuff!

Interested? Here are the rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but a description of what percentage you plan to keep versus what you’ll have to sell off, or any fond memory of a Ryan Block post is good too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. That winner will get a massive amount of swag. Packages represent a brief history of Ryan Block’s tenure as editor-in-chief. Approximate value is incalculable (but no more than $600).
  • Entries can be submitted until Friday, August 29th, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Don’t like swag? You can still enter the drawing to win a bunch of Ryan’s gadgets or some totally sweet video games.

Hey, if Bill can give away tens of billions of dollars, the least we can do to celebrate his last day is to give away some Microsoft-powered gear, right? First up: the 4GB Toshiba Gigabeat T400, one of the very last Portable Media Center-based devices ever made. Damn, we kind of miss PMC, and the rad stuff it could do that Zune couldn’t (like sync recorded TV shows from your Media Center PC). Take it away!

LG touchscreen UI contest ends… in a racecar?

April 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re not sure how LG managed to hold a touchscreen UI design contest with a $14K prize without telling anyone, but it certainly did — and keeping things on the DL probably explains why “Driving,” pictured above, was the winning entry. The “Art in Mobile” contest started last December in Korea, and the 10 winning entries will see their creations actually turned into functional phone interfaces. There’s not much info on the other nine winners, but apparently one is called “Sixty Seconds” and is designed to stall for a minute before connecting a call so you can browse photos and check messages. Uh, yeah — if our phones were taking a minute to connect calls, we’d have a bigger problem than the UI. Seriously, LG, next time you want some consumer input on phone interfaces, we think we might know some people with ideas.

MacBook Pro mockup contest results: the winner is you!

February 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

When we saw Spicu’s Air-inspired MacBook Pro mockup last week, we asked if you could guys could do better. In terms of true-to-reality, the jury’s still out until Apple hits us with the truth, but when it comes to “imagination” and “rainbows,” you guys win in a landslide. Up top we have the MacBook Pro touch from Alex W, who slapped an exterior touchscreen onto the MacBook Pro’s lid for maximum optimism. Check out the gallery below for the rest of the entries so far, with descriptions if they sent ‘em. Thanks so much to everybody who participated, and be sure to check in next time when we prototype new facial hair configurations for the Engadget staff — sure to be a riot.

Here come the MacBook Pro mockups: get yours in before it’s too late

February 8th, 2008 by

It was inevitable, Apple’s got a bit of a new laptop design direction in the MacBook Air, and nothing’s going to stand in the way of the hordes of MacBook Pro Photoshops to follow. This one here is from spicu, and we’re afraid it leaves some proportionality “to the imagination,” but it’s as good we’ve got so far. Think you can do better? Submit yours to contests at engadget dawt com with “MBP mockup” in the subject and we’ll get a little gallery going. Optimists have Apple launching an update in February, and while that rumor might be a tad sketchy at the moment, there’s no better time than the present to make a bid for Photoshop greatness. Optometrists think you shouldn’t look at the computer screen so much. Oh, and there’s nothing up for grabs for the best mockup, only pride.
