As expected, Verizon has announced today that its customers (and would-be customers) are welcome to sign up for month-to-month plans with no contract — and thus, no early-termination fee — involved, mimicking a move by AT&T earlier in the year. Of course, anyone taking advantage of the new plans won’t be able to get in on carrier subsidies, but the trade-off is that if you decide to bolt for greener pastures, you won’t be slapped with one of those nasty prorated charges. Oh, and before you give customer service a ring, take note: you’ll need to fulfill the terms of your existing contract before jumping, natch.

We’ve seen our fair share of subscription-dependent giveaways in the past in the form of Eee PC’s and even the rare PS3 offer — but handing out a Wii with cable service strikes us as somewhat notable. According to an offer from Comcast, newcomers to the company’s “Triple Play” of digital cable, VOIP service, and high-speed internet will also be able to bag an honest-to-goodness Nintendo Wii on their way out the door. Sure, you’ve got to sign a two-year contract (à la mobile telco policy), but you’ll also walk away with a console that still can’t be found on a lot of store shelves. Does this signal the ultimate dilution of the Wii into a ubiquitous and truly casual mainstay, or does it simply suggest Comcast and the big N had a sweet — and likely limited — deal? Only the suits know for sure.

We really, really hope you didn’t ink a contract with AT&T over the weekend. If so, casually close your browser and attempt to avoid this post forever. Right on cue, AT&T has implemented its consumer-friendly prorated early termination fee, which enables new and renewing subscribers to have their $175 ETF drop by $5 each month they stick with the carrier and pay their bill. Yeah, the burn rate isn’t exactly the greatest — after all, you’ll still owe $60 if you cancel with a month remaining — but it’s certainly a move in the right direction.

Get ready, battlefields, as yet another iRobot is gearing up to take you all by storm. Announced today, the aforementioned outfit has received an award under DARPA’s LANdroids program which will enable it to “develop a new portable communications relay robot that is small, inexpensive, intelligent and robust.” The resulting creature will reportedly be used in “dense urban environments to rapidly deploy and maintain a vital communications infrastructure,” and better still, they’ll be tough enough to be thrown into position and intelligent enough to “autonomously detect and avoid obstacles while navigating.” Unfortunately, it seems the conclusion of said project is still a few years out, but we can already envision soldiers getting antsy to never be forced to utter “can you hear me now?” again.

We thought that HTC’s bold venture into the direct-to-consumer space pretty much spelled doom for its once-burgeoning ODM business, but apparently not. We don’t know if these guys are just exceptionally good at what they do, exceptionally cheap, exceptionally convincing, or some combination of the above, because a report out of Taiwan’s Commercial Times claims that Palm, i-mate, and MWG — all companies who’ve moved their manufacturing contracts solidly away from HTC in recent years — have come back into the fold, ultimately bumping HTC’s contracting business to account for more than 10 percent of its total business in the first quarter. We’re skeptical that these three brands (all of whom compete with HTC at retail) would suddenly decide to throw up the white flag at roughly the same time, but considering the kinds of things that happen when other ODMs come into the picture, a little HTC TLC could be just what the doctor ordered.

In a shocking tale of totally expected events, iRobot has been awarded a tidy $286 million army contract to produce a merciless, bone-crushing battalion of 3,000 peaceful, loving, bomb-disarming robots (and their spare parts). This comes hot on the heels of Robotic FX getting its walking papers (as well as a canceled contract) on the same military work, so we can’t exactly say we’re surprised. Just another chapter in the ever-unfolding legal and philosophical drama that is the iRobot / Robotic FX story. iRobot — this round is all yours.

Though you may be used to hearing Alltel boast of its consumer-friendly policy that enables users to change their plan at anytime without requiring a contract extension, now would be a good time to gear up for lots of similar chatter from Verizon. Reportedly, Verizon Wireless will soon allow its users to change up their plans mid-contract without asking them to sign on for any additional time, which should thoroughly excite those customers who’ve been regretting their plan decision since day two. So go on, Verizon customers, start scoping out which plan best fits your current lifestyle, because the new rule goes into effect on October 7th.

We’ve yet to find an average joe (or jane) who just adores that two-year agreement they signed to receive a single subsidized device on day one, and while Sprint hasn’t been one to let folks off the hook early, it is trying a slightly different approach with Xohm. Reportedly, the carrier will be relying on “subscriptions,” which will enable customers to save more when paying for larger chunks of time, while not forcing them into anything long-term. On the same token, this also means that you’ll likely be paying full price for any hardware. Notably, the outfit’s CTO also made clear that Xohm “would not be backed by what the industry calls service-level agreements,” so don’t count on any kind of minimum bandwidth guarantee. As for pricing, the numbers are apparently still being worked, but it was suggested that the service would “probably be based on tiers.”
