Pardon us while we lick our chops, but we’re digging — nay, loving — LG’s HS102. The finely tuned successor to the delectable HS101 boasts an 800 x 600 native resolution, 160 ANSI lumens, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, 4:3 / 16:9 output options, PhlatLight LED technology, and a built-in DivX player for good measure. On top of that, you’ll also find an integrated rechargeable battery that’ll keep things beaming for around two hours. It’s said to be available now in South Korea for around ₩670,000 ($555), and you can peep the read link for a few more images (including in-action shots).

[Thanks, Jonathan]

Carl Zeiss’ powerdomeVELVET planetarium projector: 2,500,000:1 contrast ratio

September 29th, 2008 by

We’ve seen dynamic contrast ratios on HDTVs climb as high as 2,000,000:1, but an in-house design from the famed Carl Zeiss blows that right out of the water. The powerdomeVELVET planetarium projector was obviously not designed with home cinema in mind, though the specifications are no less impressive. We’ve got a 2,500,000:1 contrast ratio, DLP / BrilliantColor technologies, a 1,200p native resolution and a DVI input. Not like you’re actually considering one for your own domed theater, but it’ll be available for a small fortune in Q1 2009.

Dell quietly introduces 7609WU DLP WUXGA projector

September 25th, 2008 by

Just a day after rolling out its smallest SVGA projector of all time, Dell has quietly slid a new home cinema beamer into its accessories lineup. The 7609WU features a native 1,920 x 1,200 (WUXGA) resolution, DLP / BrilliantColor technology, 3,850 ANSI lumens, a 2,700:1 contrast ratio, twin stereo speakers, a lamp good for around 2,500 hours and a whole slew of ports including VGA (x2), component, S-Video, USB, RJ-45 and HDMI (x2). It’ll set you back a stiff $4,999, but just think, you’ll never have to spend another cent at the local Cineplex.

Dell’s tiny M109S pocket projector gets hands-on treatment

September 25th, 2008 by

It’s one thing to hear 3.46- x 4.12- x 1.46-inches. It’s another thing to see how giant someone’s hand looks beside Dell’s absolutely minuscule M109S pocket projector. Based on a hands-on session with a near-final prototype of the pico-PJ, the cats over at Popular Mechanics were mighty impressed with what they saw. They noted that “colors were a little more washed-out than a top-end home theater projector,” but given the size and the manageable $499 price tag, it still managed to wow. Peep the in-action video in the read link.

Leica reveals Pradovit D-1200 DLP HD projector

September 15th, 2008 by

Whoa, Leica — what got into you of late? Introducing three new cameras at once just not good enough? Evidently not, as the outfit better known for its retro-styled snappers has just produced an all new high-def projector, the 7.5-pound Pradovit D-1200. Taking a hint from projectiondesign’s, um, design cues, this DLP beamer boasts a native 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, 1,400 ANSI lumens, a 2,500:1 contrast ratio and a VARIO-ELMARIT-P f/2.8-3.1/33-42 mm high-speed lens. You’ll also find a 220-watt FusionPlus VIDI UHP lamp from Philips which is said to be good for around 3,000 hours, and as for ports, there’s component, HDMI 1.3, DVI, composite, S-Video, VGA and Ethernet jacks. Mum’s the word on a price, but it’ll be available for those with thick wallets this November.

Texas Instruments’ Pico projector prototype caught on tape

August 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Our friends at Engadget Spanish got a look at Texas Instruments’ DLP Pico projector, which both Optoma and Toshiba have expressed interest in. The little unit pumps out a WVGA (we think) 1000:1 image, which they found quite satisfactory, in addition to 0.5 watts of sound. The built-in battery should run the thing for a couple of hours. Action-packed video after the break, en español!

Delta calls “first” on LED-based DLP projector with a little help from Luminus

August 29th, 2008 by

TI, Delta, Luminus logosEven though the product doesn’t have any availability, pricing, or even a name yet, Delta Electronics is claiming to have the first full HD LED-based DLP projector, and is showing a demo unit at IFA and CEDIA. Using tech developed by TI and Luminus Devices, Delta says it’s ready to go with a full-size 1080p projector with “PhlatLight” LEDs pumping out the lumens, which of course means an end to futzing around with burnt-out projector bulbs right in the middle of your feature presentation. No doubt, we’re seeing LEDs show up in all manner of display devices, and if LED-lamped projector prices follow a trajectory like LED-backlit LCDs, we’d be happy campers indeed.

Lightspeed Design / InFocus team up on DepthQ 3D projectors

August 5th, 2008 by

Although high-end projection makers have been figuring out this whole 3D beaming thing for awhile now, Lightspeed Design and InFocus are looking to bring the technology to a wider audience with the introduction of its DepthQ stereoscopic 3D projectors. Available in XGA and WXGA flavors, these PJs promise “rock-solid, 120Hz stereo 3D at 1,280 x 720 or 1,024 x 768 resolution” and feature Texas Instruments’ DLP / BrilliantColor technologies, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and a total weight of just 6.9-pounds. Best of all, these undercut most other single-lens 3D projectors by coming in somewhere under $6,000 apiece, though exact numbers have yet to be disclosed.

Panasonic reveals new DLP projectors: 12,000 lumens and pixels galore

June 20th, 2008 by

Hmmph. Outside of Samsung’s blisteringly hot SP-A800B, we’re fairly certain Panasonic’s latest duo are the most impressive at InfoComm. Putting those XGA / WXGA units to shame, the PT-DZ12000U packs a drool-worthy WUXGA resolution (1,920 x 1,200) and 12,000 lumens to boot. The PT-D12000U checks in with the same three-chip DLP engine and lumen count, but eases up on the pixels with just 1,400 x 1,050. Furthermore, both units boast a System Daylight View to keep things visible even in well lit rooms, and the built-in Ethernet port enables remote monitoring and control through a web browser. Just one problem with all of this, though: the $69,000 (PT-DZ12000U) / $59,000 (PT-D12000U) price tags. Must be that Auto Cleaning Robot — good help is hard to find these days.

June 19th, 2008 by

It took nearly a year to get here, but shortly after being reviewed, Samsung’s upscale SP-A800B DLP projector is finally available in the USA. Co-developed with industry legend Joe Kane, this 1080p PJ features a native contrast ratio of 10,000:1, a 95% aperture ratio, 16-microsecond response time and a full 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. Additionally, it hums along quietly at 25dB and gets backed by a two-year warranty. Sammy’s not bothering to tell you the price, but we’ve heard it’ll list for just under ten grand.

Sharp goes wild with projectors / LCD monitors at InfoComm

June 18th, 2008 by

Never mind those guys cranking out just one or two new gizmos at InfoComm — Sharp’s busting out the big guns. The company is using the stage in Vegas to introduce a swarm of new gear including the XG-P560W 3-chip DLP WXGA projector, XG-C455W / PG-C355W 3LCD WXGA PJs, XG-P610X XGA unit and four new BrilliantColor DLP beamers (PG-F317X, PG-F312X, PG-F262X and PG-F212X). For those unfazed, it’s also showcasing 46- (TL-M4600) and 52-inch (TL-M5200) professional LCD monitors meant for digital signage applications. As you can probably glean, there’s way too much data on the whole lot to cover in this space, so we’ll kindly direct you to the read link if you’re hungry for more.

Foxconn showcases tiny PD-W1001 DLP projector

June 4th, 2008 by

Although Computex has largely delivered a slew of netbooks to digest, a handful of new pico projectors have also managed to get a little face time. The latest is Foxconn’s PD-W1001, which features a 0.3-inch Texas Instruments DLP chip, WVGA (854 x 480) resolution and 25 Lm — all within a 55- x 46- x 26-millimeter package that weighs just 65-grams. In its current form, we can’t see this being much more than a novel concept, but when these critters start inching closer to 1080p, you can color us very much interested.

projectiondesign to launch F10 AS3D active 3D stereoscopic projector

May 31st, 2008 by

Look out, naysayers — projectiondesign is giving this whole “3D revolution” thing some serious street cred with the F10 AS3D. Slated to debut at InfoComm 2008 in Las Vegas, the unit marks the company’s first active 3D stereoscopic projector. Notably, this isn’t the firm’s first foray into the third-dimension, as eight of its F20 sx+ PJs are currently being used in a 3D visualization system at Munich University. Moving on, we’ll also find its brand new three-chip DLP F80, which features a WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution, ACOP (Advanced Color Optical Processing) technology and a stratospheric price tag (we’re guessing on that last one). We’ll be holding out for pricing / release information, but we don’t suspect it’ll be too long before those critical points get divulged.

Sharp launches XG-P560W .65-inch 3-chip DLP professional projector

May 28th, 2008 by

We should probably preface this by reiterating that when Sharp says “professional,” it means precisely that. The firm’s latest beamer — the June-bound XG-P560W (or XG-P560WN sans lens) — features a modest WXGA (1,280 x 800) resolution, but includes Texas Instruments’ .65-inch 3-chip DLP technology along with Sharp’s own CV-IC II System for smoothing jaggies and minimizing image noise. Additionally, it features a 1,800:1 contrast ratio, seven interchangeable lenses, a dual-lamp lighting system, DVI / HDMI inputs and a built-in Ethernet port for remote access and control. Remember that whole spill we made at the onset? Yeah, here’s proof: $16,995 for the XG-P560W, $15,995 for the XG-P560WN.

Mitsubishi shows off XD211U DLP projector

Mitsubishi XD211U DLP projector

Talk about product overlap: just over a month ago, Mitsubishi introduced its XD500U, boasting a pixel count of 1,024 x 768 and brightness of 2,200-lumens. Now say “hello” to the XD211U, with the same pixel count, brightness, and BrilliantColor specs. The XD211U weighs in at 0.5-pounds lighter and does boast a new DDP 2230 TI microarray, however. The theft-deterrent security hook will protect the $1595 beamer from any grabby hands around the office or classroom. The projector might be secure, but you know some deadbeat is going to make off with the detachable keypad and render this thing unusable — better order a spare keypad right up front.

Samsung shows off M310 Ultra Mobile Pocket Imager projector

Hailed as an Ultra Mobile Pocket Imager, this DLP device features a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 150 ANSI lumens, VGA input, SVGA native resolution and a pleasantly small footprint. InFocus’ 1080p DLP Play Big IN83 projector surfaces

February 5th, 2008 by

Hey, you — about to pull the trigger on a svelte new 1080p Play Big IN82? Hold your horses young buck, as it seems that the aforementioned unit’s successor is just around the bend. Reportedly, the InFocus Play Big IN83 will house Texas Instrument’s DarkChip 4 DLP chip and will feature a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 5,000:1 native contrast ratio, 10-bit video processing, an HDMI 1.3 input, automatic black level calibration, 1,600 lumens and a three-year warranty. Unfortunately, word on the street pegs this beauty at £3,500 ($6,948), so maybe that soon-to-be-discounted IN82 doesn’t look like such a slouch after all.
