Here she is — the world’s first DSLR to capture 720p HD movie footage. But let’s be honest, the high-def action is just a cherry on top of Nikon’s D90 ($1,299 kit; $999 body only), as the expansive Live View LCD, high ISO options and heralded image quality are the real draws. You’ve already heard what the experts in the field had to say, but if you’re just lookin’ for some old fashioned gadget glamour shots to get your weekend started right, take all the time you need in the gallery below.

Last we heard from Panasonic, the DMC-G1 super-light was tentatively priced at $799 for US markets. Turns out this is fact, at least if the officials at Panasonic’s booth here at CEATEC are to be believed. What’s more, they say the G1 will hit stateside shores in November, so if you’re in the market for a new camera, start saving now. In related news, we got our hands on the G1 again, this time in red (the camera, not our hands). The digital viewfinder is still a bit disorienting, but the proximity sensor that turns off the big display when you’re up close is a nice little trick. Pics and what-not below.

We’ve seen Pentax put the Midas touch on a few of its DSLRs before, but Nikon? In a rare effort to draw attention to its D60, the outfit has evidently unveiled a “Black Gold” edition which merely adds a few niceties in the way of revamped trim. In other words, you’ll see no upgrades on the camera that aren’t cosmetic, and unless you’re really into that gilded look, you may not even appreciate the Gold Edition strap, logo’d box, gold shutter button / strap lugs and the shiny new D60 badge. Is $50 too much to ask for those puny tweaks? Answer with your wallet, please.
[Thanks, Bo]

No, you can’t order a Pentax K-m with live view, but you can end up with one littered in Swarovski crystals. Over at Photokina, this gem (ahem) was proudly on display, reportedly aimed at dames in the crowd with a thing for fashion and technology. A company representative wouldn’t disclose pricing, through she did say any prospective buyers could phone up Pentax to talk cheddar.

This enterprising EOS 40D owner wants a DSLR that records video, too — and he’s taking action. This hack uses CHDK — the free firmware enhancement for Canon PowerShot cameras — and LiveView to capture video to the camera’s CF Card. There are still a few issues: LiveView shuts down after a period of inactivity, video can’t be transfered via USB, and unlike your $79 consumer grade camera, the EOS 40D won’t record audio. But what’s a little challenge in the face of a good camera mod? There’s no word on file format, frame rate or resolution (though the camera’s display weighs in at 320 x 240), but there are lots of other juicy details available once you hit the read link. And be sure to catch the video after the break.

We noticed that the writeup for Leica’s newly unveiled S2 made mention of a new Kodak sensor, but we’ll leave it to Kodak to do the boasting. Sure enough, the outfit responsible for this atrocity has rolled out a few new image sensors at Photokina 2008, one of which — the KAF-37500 — proudly resides in the aforementioned S2. The company is showcasing sensors for medium format rigs such as the Sinar HY6-65 (KAF-31600) and Hasselblad H3DII-50 (KAF-50100), though quite honestly, it spends more time gloating about what manufacturers it’s partnering with than describing the technology. Oh well, so long as it keeps Kodak from focusing on its pathetic point-and-shoot lineup, we’ll keep smiling.

Is it Photokina time, or what? Joining the host of other camera manufacturers with sparkly fresh announcements this week is none other than Leica, which just announced a trio of new cams a few days back. This introduction, however, stands alone, and Leica’s making some pretty remarkably bold statements about its new S-system. The first device to take advantage is the 37-frickin’-megapixel S2, which sits between Canon’s EOS 5D and EOS 1Ds MkIII in terms of body size. The company designed the camera to provide “the quality of medium format and the handling and flexibility of 35mm,” and the outfit also has nine S-system lenses on tap. As for expectations? Leica says it’ll perform “twice as fast as Hasselblad H-series cameras,” and if that wasn’t straight-up enough, the firm’s David Bell proclaimed that “[Leica] thinks it has the best professional camera system in the world with this.”

As the big Photokina show prepares to launch tomorrow, out pops the new Pentax K2000 first spotted over the weekend as the leaked K-m. Positioned as an entry-level DSLR for those looking to make the jump from point-and-shoot, the K2000 features dead-simple Auto Picture modes, a 10.2 megapixel CCD and 2.7-inch LCD offering 96% field of view, ISO 3200 sensitivity, and the vibrational dust removal system and Shake Reduction tech expected from a Pentax K-series shooter. All this housed in one of the smallest and lightest camera bodies in its class. The K2000 body ships only as part of a $700 kit containing a smc PENTAX DA L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens (a first from the affordable DA L series) and AF200FG flash starting in November. Optional $1,500 smc PENTAX DA 60-250mm f/4 ED[IF] SDM lens pictured after the break.
Update: Hands-on preview of the K2000 (aka, the K-m as it’s known in Europe) over at dpreview.

Just in time for the big Photokina show in Koln, Germany, rumours are buzzing about a new Pentax DSLR that briefly appeared on the Pentax Germany site. Though details are sketchy, the K-m looks to be a lower-cost take on the K10D, with the same 10.2 megapixel Sony sensor and in-body stabilization but a lighter and smaller plastic case and slightly larger 2.7-inch LCD display. Sadly, there’s no live view, but if the rumored pricing — €500 ($725) for the single (18-55m) lens and €600 ($875) for the 2-lens kit (18-55mm and 50-200mm) — is accurate that might not be a dealbreaker. We’ll find out soon.

Canon went a bit berserk this morning, but without a doubt the looker from the crowd is the 21-megapixel EOS 5D Mark II. Make no mistake, this bad boy is bringing all sorts of new and revamped technology to the game, and thanks to the good folks over at DPReview, you don’t have to waste your day trying to piece it all together. Linked below is a 13-page “preview” that dishes out more details on the specs, changes, operation, design, menus and favorite date spots than you could ever fathom. Being the DSLR freak that you are, however, we know you’ve already ventured off and are onto page 2. No hard feelings, though.

Sony’s Alpha A700 has been pleasing (or displeasing, we suppose), users for just over a year now, but those that have stuck with it in spite of a few issues can now smile brightly. Sony has just unleashed a firmware update for the DSLR which reportedly adds in an option to select auto exposure bracketing (single and continuous) with 3 shots in 2 EV steps and gives the choice to nix the High ISO NR feature. Furthermore, it supposedly improves the image quality in a high ISO setting, the auto white balance and D-Range Optimizer performance and the reliability for communication between camera body and vertical grip. Any owners out there care to give a shout on how their rig is performing post-update?

When Canon answered the rumor calls with its official unveiling of the 15.1-megapixel EOS 50D, it failed to nail down an exact release date. Thankfully, Circuit City has informed us that “October” really means “October 6th,” and the beastly DSLR is up for pre-order right now for $1,399.99 (body only) / $1,599.99 (kit with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens). Just over a fortnight to wait — surely you can twiddle your thumbs until then, yeah?

Been saving all those pennies for something really special? If you’re a DSLR aficionado (or just general gadget lover), you’ve probably glanced in the general direction of Sony’s monster Alpha A900 DSLR. At a price-point of $2,999, this isn’t for everyone, but if you’re in the market for a full frame shooter with a handful of enviable features — you might want to turn your eyeballs in this direction.
[Thanks, Jose]

You heard that Nikon busted out a DSLR with a 720p movie mode, right? Even that is going to pale in comparison to RED’s alternative, or at least that’s what RED would have you to believe. In a recent post over at the REDuser forums, Jannard points out that its DSLR “replacement” should be ready to rock by late 2009, and while an official name has yet to arrive, it’s going by DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera) for the time being. Also of note, Jannard casually mentioned that this piece would be more advanced than Nikon’s D90 and an undisclosed 1080p DSLR from Canon; that’s the first we’ve heard of such a beast, but given the natural progression of technology, we suppose it fits. C’mon guys, 3K 4K 5K shooting in a DSLR, we know you can do it.

Now that the dust has settled on Nikon’s new D700 DSLR — but hopefully not on that anti-dust 12.1 megapixel full-frame sensor — we thought we’d toss together a few general impressions of the new mid-range pro camera. It’s pretty much a landslide, the D700 is a major winner for Nikon. Sure, $3,000 is pricey, but for a camera that basically crams the full-frame imaging prowess of the D3 into the highly portable body of the D300 — and left out only a few pro features in the process — it’s a relative bargain, and Nikon couldn’t have done much better for itself. You’ll also need to pony up for lenses that were actually built for a full-frame sensor to really get your money’s worth, though our hats off to Nikon for letting you use any old lens you please. The only real complaint we heard is that the shutter feels mushy, which is a relevant criticism and an anomaly for Nikon, but unlikely to be a dealbreaker.

Apparently, not only is Sony’s fancy new full-frame DSLR — the A900 — showing up in ad leaks all across the interblogs, but it’s been caught with its lens cover down in real life. An eagle-eyed forum poster managed to snag shots of what appear to be the camera in action, taken in Belgium this August doing what it does best… snapping pictures. There’s not much more to say, but this should thoroughly whet your whistle for the model’s forthcoming introduction, which we can only imagine will be happening sometime around the upcoming Photokina.

No matter where you fall in this crazy DSLR war between Canon folks, Nikon folks, Sony folks and “how do you turn this thing on?” folks, there’s no denying the D90 has sparked quite a lot of interest from all the right places. The video feature is just plain exciting, as is Live View and that 3-inch LCD (oh, and we hear it also takes pictures), and Nikon could very well have a hit on its hands when it actually starts shipping the thing. Which is where this box comes in. A tipster says it popped up at his Best Buy, but he’s getting the impression from inventory that it won’t actually be for sale this week. We hope he’s wrong, but we’re almost out of week. Anybody manage to nab one of these yet? Another blurrycam pic after the break.

By and large, Canon’s EOS Rebel XSi was widely adored. Still, even the fanboys in attendance can’t deny that firmware updates that solve any number of quirks are loved just the same. Canon has just posted up firmware v1.0.9 for the aforesaid DSLR, which purportedly fixes three primary issues. The 7.81MB download addresses a “phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions,” another in which “the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting, and yet another in which “images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used.” Tap that read link to get your download on, and be sure to let us know if this update actually works as advertised.

Red CEO, Jim Jannard, is stirring up trouble in the RED User forums, J. Wong-style. His latest volley discusses the new Mysterium “Monstro” sensor program, the next evolution (and future free upgrade) to the Mysterium X sensor slated for RED’s 5k Epic. The most interesting revelation though is this little nugget: in addition to Epic, RED plans to place Monstro into, “another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market.” He later adds, “Future cameras will shoot ultra-high resolution stills and motion…” Now, considering that the second generation, full-frame, ~25 megapixel Mysterium X is already a serious challenge to 35mm film, we can only imagine what this DSLR with a third generation RED sensor might offer. Hear that Nikon? Your D90 is just the beginning of this story. Let’s just hope that televisions and monitors, already struggling to reach 4k, Quad HD can keep pace.
