Hacker stuffs a wired 360 controller in a DualShock 3 shell

Console modders out there have been doing crazy things with controllers for a while now, and while this latest piece isn’t as crazy as the one-handed Access Controller, it’s still good for a double-take — check out this wired 360 controller shoehorned into a DualShock3 shell, complete with green LEDs. THe modder, RDC, says it works great, rumble included, but that there’s no headset connector and the L2 and R2 triggers aren’t analog — both things he’s hoping to fix in the next version. We’d suggest keeping the DS3 buttons as well — while the colorful 360 buttons look pretty hot against that black case, we’d rather break this thing out and blow minds stealth-style.

[Thanks, Aguiluz]

Sony’s Wiimote competitor to come as break-apart DualShock 3?

June 13th, 2008 by

So GamesIndustry’s got word that Sony’s supposedly-forthcoming Wiimote competitor is taking shape as something that sounds a lot like a break-apart DualShock 3, which would split down the middle and be used as two independent halves. Because that’s really what the PS3 needs, is another kind of controller. Seriously, do they really think any new device will be greeted warmly by the PlayStation fans they first disappointed with the SIXAXIS, and then bullied into paying $55 for a DualShock 3 (and only because they spent so much time fighting Immersion over the money they clearly owed in the first place)? There’s a chance we could find out at this year’s E3 if this controller really is in the works, but it’s a small one as they’re still trying to help people get over the DualShock 3 hump, after all.

Sony dumping off old SIXAXIS controllers in MGS4 “Welcome Box” PS3 bundles

May 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Now that the Dual Shock 3 is finally here, it looks like Sony’s finding creative way to dump off old SIXAXIS stock — like tossing ‘em in MGS4 PS3 bundles. Japanese PS3 buyers will be able to choose from three “Welcome Box” MGS4 bundles in Satin Silver, Ceramic White, and Clear Black, and in addition to Snake’s latest adventure and a Dual Shock 3, they’ll find a SIXAXIS inside. The bundles will cost ¥49,800 ($470), compared to ¥51,800 ($492) for the gunmetal gray bundle that doesn’t include the extra controller, so basically Sony’s giving Japanese buyers $20 to take a SIXAXIS home. That’s quite a deal, but honestly, we’d rather take drop the Jackson on that super-hot gunmetal unit home than have another (obsolete) controller lying around.

DualShock 3 trickles out to US retailers

April 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh great lorf of the mighty rumble, the DualShock 3 has finally been spotted on US retailer soil. The one above caught the attention of Stephen at a Maryland Circuit City. Now best get on the horn with your local big box, no telling how long supplies will last.

DualShock 3 to shake the US next week

April 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’d been hearing that the DualShock 3 wasn’t supposed to land until April 15th, but apparently Sony decided that getting gamers good and buzzed couldn’t wait until Tax Day — the official PlayStation Blog says the vibration-enabled controllers will hit US stores next week. There’s a new DS3-compatible logo for rumble-compatible games, and quite a few titles will be getting updates to support the new controller. Everyone got their $55 together? Sweet, now all we need is an early release of MGS4.

DualShock 3 to arrive in April for $55

February 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sure, you’ve been able to get a DualShock 3 on the gray market for a while now, but it looks like that “early 2008” rumor was spot on — Sony just announced that vibration-enabled version of the SIXAXIS is due to arrive in North America in April 2008 for $55, along with that new 80GB PS3 SKU. We doubt much will have changed from the Japanese version we’ve already played with — if you can’t stand the anticipation the whole gallery is right here.

New PS3 SKU practically confirmed by GameStop

February 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to a report, the next iteration of PS3 packages has been all but confirmed during a GameStop conference call recently. Apparently, the 80GB version of the console is dead, and is due to be replaced by a 120GB model bundled with the Dual Shock 3 controller — just like we mentioned a few days go. There’s no set price or release date, though speculation is that it will turn up by GDC. Instead of a denial, Sony has gone for a “no comment” in regards to this news, though it certainly looks like this is the direction they’re heading in, regardless of what they say.

Sony killing 80GB PS3, introducing 120GB or 160GB model with Dual Shock 3?

January 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to Ars Technica, Sony has some big plans for a PlayStation 3 refresh, starting with a phase-out of the 80GB model. According to an “inside source” — which Ars claims has been consistently right on video game-related predictions — the console-maker’s new plot is starting to take shape, holding fast to a two-SKU approach on packages, upping the hard drive capacity on systems, and including the Dual Shock 3 controller. The new bundles will take the high / low road, with the source stating that the 40GB model will remain on shelves, while the 80GB, Spider-Man 3-inclusive system will disappear, only to be replaced with a 120GB or 160GB configuration. Of course, right now these are just words on a screen, though in light of Best Buy’s recent stock changes, there certainly is an air of movement over at Sony.

Sony DualShock3 Stateside “early 2008″

December 9th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We were just alerted to an “easter egg” of sorts hidden in plain site in the text of the PS3 firmware 2.01 update released on November 20th. It’s not much, but an asterisked notation for “Vibration Function” says that the DualShock3 will be “Available for purchase in early 2008.” Goodish news for those of you having trouble acquiring the rumbler from Japanese importers.

[Thanks, Arun]

Sony DualShock 3 unboxing: ready to rumble?

November 12th, 2007 by

While it wasn’t as though our Tokyo bureau was blessed with PS3 firmware 2.0 way in advance of us poor saps in the States, they certainly were among the first in the world to snag the retail release of the most controversial next-gen controller, MIA since launch in late 2006 until now: Sony’s DualShock 3. (In ceramic white, no less!) It’s nothing you haven’t already seen here on Engadget, but feel free to inspect the package porn in the gallery below, letting waves of envy wash over you as that ¥5,500 ($50 US) burns a hole in your pocket. But hey, no reason to get too worked up, after all what possible need could your next-gen PlayStation have for the hottest “last-gen” feature on the block?

PS3 firmware 2.00 hits tomorrow

November 7th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Sure, 2.00 might sound like a magical milestone, but in reality there’s not a whole lot here that’s going to revolutionize your gaming experience, and sadly nothing yet to bring online communication and play to parity with Xbox Live and Xbox’s handy dandy dashboard. That said, Sony is strengthening some of the PS3’s unique features, like the new Remote Start function that lets you fire up your PS3 remotely when you’re accessing it with your PSP, and playlists for music and photos. One of the biggest “additions” is DualShock 3 support, but that’s so laughably last-gen that it’s hardly worth noting. Sony is also packing in the ability to create and share your own Themes for XMB, and a news ticker that will eventually make way for the importing of your own RSS feeds. Sony also added a new XMB group to the main menu to pave the way for Home and other internets-friendly features, and — oddly enough — Canon printer support to really round out the package. The update will be available in the States tomorrow, November 8th.

Update: PS3 Fanboy has some exclusive screenshots of the new interface.

DualShock 3 said to be in short supply from importers

November 2nd, 2007 by

Filed under:

It looks like those hoping to get a jump on the DualShock 3 action by importing one of the controllers from Japan may be in for some disappointment, as importers are now reportedly warning that stock could be “extremely limited.” According to GamesIndustry.biz, Play Asia says that it’s already filled all its pre-orders, and it’s speculating that prices could “skyrocket” when the controller’s released on November 11st. Some retailers are apparently even being advised by suppliers to only sell the controller with the purchase of a PS3 console, although it’s not clear if anyone’s actually going that far. National Console Support, however, says it expects prices to return to normal within two to three weeks of the Japanese launch, which would still give you plenty of time to taunt your friends with it before it’s available ’round these parts.

PS3 firmware 1.94 to bring rumble support

October 24th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Everyone’s favorite last-gen feature is just about ready to make its grand appearance on the PS3: although firmware 1.94 hasn’t been officially released yet, ShackNews is reporting that copies of Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction contain an updater to Sony’s latest code, and it provides support for the rumblin’ DualShock3 controller due out in Japan in November and in the US sometime this spring. No word on what other updates 1.94 provides, but it’s not like anything else is even close to as important.

Sony Japan’s ceramic white PS3 and DualShock 3 announced

October 9th, 2007 by

Nope, not an early sign of cataracts, you’re looking at Sony’s ceramic white 40GB PS3 and DualShock 3 controller just loosed in Japan. Like its European 40GB cuz, the CECHH00 Series PS3 aces the backward compatibility, memory card slot, and 2x of the 4x USB slots in favor of a low, low ¥39,980 (about $341/€242) price tag when it ships on 11 November. The DualShock 3 wireless rumbler (sold separately) first revealed at Tokyo Game Show hits shelves the same day for ¥5,500 or about $47/€33. Yes, both the PS3 and DualShock 3 are available in black if you’re feeling the ebony over new-school ivory.
