How would you change Nokia’s E71?

Handset lovers in some regions of the world not named North America have been enjoying the luxuries of Nokia’s E71 for some time now, but those of us waiting around for a version compatible with 3G here on this side of the planet have just recently been able to indulge. Make no mistake, though — this piece of QWERTY goodness ain’t cheap. Ringing up at right around 500 bones, USers have the right to have some pretty high expectations, and we’re here to ask if those expectations have been met. Are you satisfied with the ultrathin smartphone? Is the display up to snuff? How’s that keyboard? Are you kosher with the white keys? What else would you do to improve upon the E71? Leave it all in comments below.

Nokia’s North American E71 now available at Chicago flagship store

July 21st, 2008 by

Call it a hunch, but you shouldn’t have to wait too awfully long (like, hours / days / weeks) to secure Nokia’s North American E71 today. Said handset is now available at the company’s flagship store in Chicago, complete with a QWERTY keyboard and US-friendly 3G. Eager to grab one? Total cost will be $483 (plus tax) in addition to a roundtrip ticket to Chi-town, considering the store won’t ship to out-of-towners (or so we hear).

Engadget Mobile’s Nokia E71 review

June 19th, 2008 by

They’ve got a bona fide, US 3G-friendly, Nokia E71 over at Engadget Mobile, all gussied up and reviewed for your viewing pleasure. The phone is a serious statement from Nokia, being that company’s first 3G QWERTY device in the States, and the thinnest QWERTY smartphone in existence. Not too shabby for a little Finnish upstart.

Nokia E71 and N66 online demos leak out

June 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

After spying those “in the wild” shots of Nokia’s E71 and N66, we knew something had to be up — and that does appear to be the case. A forum member over at Mobile-Review has stumbled upon user demos for both of the forthcoming devices, featuring in-depth Flash walkthroughs on how to master all the basic features of either phone. It seems likely that an announcement is due any day now (though we’re thinking it won’t be coming on Monday) — but at least you can enjoy a bunch of new angles and animations while you wait.

Historically picking function over form, Nokia continues to grapple with the true meaning of “sexy phone” — but its latest two business-class smartphones are pretty much the closest thing we’ve seen to date. We’ve got the visuals all scooped up ahead of Espoo’s official announcement, so head on over to Mobile for the lowdown!

Nokia promises “a lot” more phones in the US, we say “orly”?

May 5th, 2008 by

NokiaAccording to Nokia chief designer Alastair Curtis, Nokia will be offering several — nay, a “lot” — more products in the US very soon. “In the next few months,” Curtis promised, “operators will carry a lot of new products from us.” While Nokia controls 40% of the worldwide handset market, they only have a 10% share in the United States. It seems they’re not happy with that and want a bigger piece of the American pie. Bring it on, Nokia. We’re ready to see these phones from you, say, in the form of an E71 or Tube?

Nokia E71 in the wild?

January 5th, 2008 by

Looks legit enough, doesn’t it? The supposed successor to the E61i has broken cover via this shot of the device — in prototype “EXX” form, no less — being proudly displayed in some lucky son of a gun’s hand. The “E” moniker designates a Nokia smartphone with a business slant, of course, and thanks to a lovely QWERTY board, the E71 seems to be no exception; specs on the E51-ish device are said to be pretty much in line with what we’d expect for a circa-2008 piece, including HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel primary cam with a secondary up front for video calling. As for North American 3G, well… as usual, we can only hope. We’re not sure whether this thing will break officially here at CES, but if it does, you’ll be the first to know.
