Greatest projector / iPhone clone combo handset in the world now up for sale

October 28th, 2008 by

Look, here’s what you need to do: reach into the appropriate pocket on your personage, take out your phone, and throw it into the nearest wall. It sucks. The N70 from Lanye (or ChinaKing, or… somebody from China), which we’ve drooled over previously, is a candybar phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth 2.0, and a little bit of dual-band GSM. Oh, and a built-in projector. And an interface that almost perfectly mirrors that of the iPhone with the addition of voice recording and MMS. It’s awesome, and it’s now available for import for a mere $345. A bargain at any price.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Keepin’ it real WTF, Part II: Russian iPhone “boots up,” does nothing else

October 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve finally found a KIRF suitable to become the one and only successor to our very first “Keepin’ it real… WTF?!” This here iPhone — which is little more than a familiar chassis with a lead weight and a small amount of internal hardware — is reportedly used by scammers in Russia in order to barter for train tickets, grub, etc. In essence, the phone has just enough electronics within it to give the appearance of a “boot up” sequence, complete with the Apple logo; the scammer in possession of it then explains that the battery is simply drained, but that it will work perfectly fine once charged. After any given sucker hands over something quite valuable in exchange for this heap, he / she proceeds to crush it into a million pieces while cursing the unknown name of whoever fooled them in the first place. Moral of the story? Stay sharp, street traders.

[Thanks, Abhijit]

Purported iPhone Nike+ screenshots found to be fake

August 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

And to think, we actually believed that Nike and Apple were this close to delivering the long-awaited running application for the iPhone. While it was widely reported that these shots were indeed the real deal, AppleInsider is pointing out a chink in the armor: Cupertino doesn’t offer iPhone developers a programming interface for accessing one’s music, yet this mysterious program clearly showed someone listening to Chris Martin and friends while attempting to make it to 0.02km. The take away? It’s still pretty likely that the two outfits are working to create a fitness program for the App Store, but those screenshots ain’t it.

[Thanks, Michael]

iTreo 800p available on eBay: L@@K

August 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well whaddya know? The iTreo 800p is finally selling on eBay! We thought the day would never come that we could actually get our hands on this totally sweet — and absolutely real — phone. Man were we wrong. Sure, the listing says you’re selling off a Treo 800W, but given the large amount of completely reassuring blue text, scrolling text, and large font text, we’ll happily accept that we will, in fact, receive the device pictured above via UPS Next Day Air. So, yes. Yes. We will “buy it now” for $349.99, safe in the knowledge that by this time tomorrow, we’ll be the only guy on our block busting out the iTreo 800p at parties, pool halls, and any place else where all the happenin’ stuff happens. Thanks “naseemajid” — you’re A+++++ in our book.

[Thanks, Spencer]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXXV: Touch Diamond gets aped sans luster

July 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not that we’d view the actual Touch Diamond as IF or anything, but the Diamond J6 is more along the lines of I3. In all seriousness, this thing isn’t too far from being spot-on identical (maybe it’s an HTC thing?), with a 2.8-inch display, built-in camera, multimedia player, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot. And for $160, we’re almost inclined to fall in love here… almost.

The not-3G iPhone unboxing gets faker still

June 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

C’mon guys — you’re going to have to do better than this. First you show us that beat looking gray phone with the “dot” front-facing camera. Now the dot has magically grown, and the gray face looks more and more like a Colorware job or a badly cut sticker. But you know what’s really insulting? You show that colored plastic back, and then in the next picture, the original iPhone aluminum back is clearly visible. Honestly… it’s like you’re not even trying.

Surprise! Biggest drawing now biggest GPS hoax in the world

May 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Erik NordenankarWe had a pretty good idea that not only was this whole “Biggest Drawing in the World” business fake, but also impossible. First, we were skeptical that DHL could make deliveries based on coordinate instructions. Then, we determined — with little effort — that the little campaign was a DHL ad. Now we have a straight-up admission from artist Erik Nordenenkar and DHL that entire thing was fictional. Appearing at the bottom of Erik’s site — after the fact and millions of hits — are the following words: “This is fictional work. DHL did not transport the GPS at any time.” Meanwhile, DHL offered that this was an innocent college project and they were happy to let Nordenenkar film in their warehouse, use their name, and make false claims regarding the whole shenanigan. So, there you have it. The videos, briefcase, DHL receipts — all spam. Move along.

Skullphone’s Clear Channel billboards not hax0r3d, actually pa1d for

March 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

That Skullphone billboard hack we saw yesterday had everyone at Engadget HQ pretty impressed with the corporate-pranking hijinks. Too bad it turns out that Skullphone is actually a phony (and total buster, we might add) who had to pay The Man (aka Clear Channel) cold hard cash to “glitch up” the digital billboards. According to Curbed LA (and our reliable tipsters / commenters), Skullphone paid the massive media conglomerate for one-day Los Angeles-wide ads — there was no hacking involved at all. From now on, he should just leave the signage-goofing to the pros, or at least make it clear there’s some money changing hands. Fool us once, shame on you… and… we won’t get fooled again.

[Thanks, Dakota]

EU, U.S. seize $1.3 billion in counterfeit computer parts, plan crackdown

February 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Officials from the U.S. and European Union gave themselves a big pat on the back today, announcing that a joint operation of theirs recently netted over 360,000 fake computer components over a two week period, a haul that they say rang up to some $1.3 billion. That apparently included both counterfeit integrated circuits and various computer parts, which were branded with over forty different trademarks including Intel, Cisco and Philips, to name a few. Needless to say, the officials are now apparently feeling a little buoyed by their success, with them vowing to crack down on computer counterfeiters the world over, and ” take up the matter” with China, which is where most of the seized products apparently came from.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CIX: C-002 HiPhone ups the ante

February 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

All you other iPhone knockoff manufacturers out there better take note: the C-002 HiPhone isn’t messing around. Not only is this phone built to mimic the iPhone hardware, but the interface is one of the most faithful reproductions we’ve seen, and even the unboxing experience has been made to scream Apple. In fact, some of the largest differences between this phone and its inspiration are improvements: a removable battery, dual SIM cards and a microSD slot. There’s a video after the break — it’s just like falling in love all over again.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CIII: half Nokia, half HTC, all ripoff

December 20th, 2007 by

As if the N73 wasn’t already up for the “most knocked off cellphone of the century” award, here we have yet another rip that wasn’t even so kind as to stick solely to the Nokia motif. Rather, the ZTC 8898 threw in a dash of HTC to flavor things up, and apparently, this unit can even handle its fair share of NES (SNES?) emulation. Specs wise, we’re lookin’ at a 2.5-inch external display (and a 2.8-incher on the inside), dual SIM card slots, built-in camera and a pair of janky speakers to boot. We understand that buying both of the handsets this thing mimics wouldn’t be cheap, but seriously, don’t do yourself the disservice of plunking down $189 on this.

Keepin’ it real fake, part XCIV: Act-429 PMP puts on a RAZR2 act

November 3rd, 2007 by

Filed under:

Another unimaginative PMP for you this weekend, which happens to vaguely rip-off the design of the RAZR2. Nope, this doesn’t have a phone stuck inside: it’s simply a regular little PMP that features a 2-inch screen and controls that mimic the look of Motorola’s flagship. It also has an FM tuner, a speaker — hey, at least you could pretend that this is a speakerphone — and e-Book and gaming “functionality.” Don’t expect to see this in your local Wal-Mart anytime soon.

Keepin’ it real fake, part LXXXII: The Chintendo Vii

September 28th, 2007 by

Filed under:

While we imagine that reverse engineering the Wii console is a fairly straightforward procedure, reproducing Nintendo’s extensive software library would be quite the trick. That is, until Meizu’s OS X duplication team becomes available. Pages 3 and 4 after the break.
