Sony got a lot of things right with its 5.0 firmware update for the PSP, with the PlayStation Store and its direct downloads making a long awaited appearance, but it looks to have caused a bit of a problem for folks with high-capacity Memory Sticks — namely, it was reporting that 8GB or 16GB cards are full when, in fact, there’s plenty of free space left on ‘em. Ever the one for a do-over, Sony now says that it’s aware of the problem and that the 5.01 firmware update will sort everything out when it’s released “soon.”

Sony didn’t want to make a big deal about this (so humble, that Sony) but the PlayStation 3’s recent 2.50 firmware update has a few extra additions aimed straight at home theater buffs. First up is a place to enter your DivX VOD Registration code — necessary if you want to get any of that Sony Pictures or Warner Bros. DivX-encoded video that’s on the way — along with new Sequential Playback and 50Hz video output settings, plus support for chroma upsampling & Mosquito Noise Reduction video enhancement on homemade Blu-ray discs and DVDs. On a more minor note, the BD/DVD settings section has been renamed just Video Settings, while the Cinema Conversion and Upscale options are getting all their mail delivered to BD/DVD Cinema Conversion and BD/DVD Upscaler, respectively. Peep the PlayStation site for the rest of the exciting details (there’s a German keyboard layout change that is not to be missed), and then go back to watching Hulu in a tiny box with a poor framerate in your newly Flash-enabled browser.

Good news, friends, you won’t have to wait until tomorrow to get at that new Flash 9 support offered up by the PS3 2.50 update: the firmware is available now. Sony tossed in a few other assorted updates like power-saving options and voice chat enhancements, but we’re sure you’ll be too busy watching Doogie Howser, M.D. on Hulu to notice. Happy downloading!

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has put the word out on those PS3 and PSP updates we hepped you to yesterday. The big news is that the PS3 browser now supports Flash 9. Otherwise, things are pretty much as we thought: support for your SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, advanced voice chat features, screen capture (for future titles), a video scene search, power save mode and changes to the Trophy system and Information Board. The PSP 5.00 firmware gives the handheld WiFi access to the PlayStation store, a full size on-screen keyboard and a sleep timer (just like your old clock radio). According to SCEE, the updates should see the light of day on October 15 (at least in Europe) but there’s no word yet on a Stateside release. You’ll know as soon as we do.

We noticed a few problems with the firmware on the Archos 5 we got our hands on last month, and it now looks like the company is going some way towards addresses a few of those complaints with its latest update, and it’s thrown in a few goodies for good measure. The biggest of those is added support for OGG and FLAC formats, though the promised increase in battery life and boost in USB transfer speed will also no doubt be especially welcome to anyone that’s already taken the plunge on one of the players as well. The list of bug fixes is even longer, and includes promised remedies for all sorts of system hangs and crashes, plus some fixes for a number of video playback and recording problems. Hit up the link below to grab a copy.

Sony’s firmware elves haven’t gotten a break since the last round of console updates — PS3 2.50 and PSP 5.00 have just been announced on the PlayStation Blog. Nothing terrifically major for the PS3 apart from support for the SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, as well as some trophy tweaks and power management options, but the PSP gets a WiFi version of the PlayStation Store, with downloadable games, trailers, and demos. No word on when these will actually become available, but we’d guess it’ll be relatively soon.

SanDisk just released a firmware update for the Sansa Fuze — pretty minor, except it adds in support for FLAC and Ogg, which should make fans of jam bands and lossless music encoding extremely happy. Nothing much else of note here apart from some UI tweaks and big fixes, but Fuze owners will be appreciative, we’re sure.

So, you’ve gone and updated to that new “big fix” firmware 2.1 — but is the Kool Aid as delicious as you’ve been promised? On our end, we’re certainly seeing noticeable improvements on lagging keyboards, app switching / opening (particularly with contacts and text messages), moving through menus / scrolling, application installation and iTunes syncing, but has Apple solved the big issue? The software update page boasts of a “decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls,” and while that might make you think you’ll see the proverbial “more bars in more places” (and you probably do), it’s likely related to another change in this update, namely, “improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display.” We know that a lot of you are seeing apparent improvements in signal strength, but is that a matter of updated icons, or a reflection of some crazy voodoo Apple performed on the phone’s radio? We’re leaning towards the former, but we’d like to hear what you have to say. So what’s the deal? Is the iPhone 3G seeing actual reception improvements, or is it just cosmetic? Let us know in the poll below.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_2_0_2_Software_Out_Bug_Fixes’; Well okay, we don’t know if it’s angry or not, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the 2.0.2 update of Apple’s phone OS is out there for your downloading pleasure (via iTunes, specifically). So far, all we know is that this iteration tackles those pesky “bugs,” but what those exact bugs are, we couldn’t say… nor could Apple. We’re grabbing now and will update with any exciting developments.
Update: Well we’ve got the new firmware up and running, and it’s true — those bugs have been fixed. Which bugs? Well, it’s still hard to say, but our voice suddenly sounds deeper, and we’ve noticed improved grammar during calls.

D-Link’s been sipping power of late with its newish DWA-643 and DWA-556 desktop “Green Ethernet” switches, and now it’s shipping those power savings upstream to its DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit router and DIR-855 dual channel routers with freely downloadable firmware updates. We’d scoff, but that’s a power savings of 32 percent and 41 percent, respectively. It might only shave a few cents off those electric bills, but hey, you can always melt that copper down to make arrows for the coming apocalypse.

Samsung kicks out new Blue Wave firmware updates for the YP-P2 PMP faster than we can keep up with ‘em, but we’ve honestly never even seen in the wild. Still, we’ll give Sammy credit for releasing free feature updates (cough), and Blue Wave 4 delivers basically what we’d heard about a couple months back: voice recording, Bluetooth gaming, subway maps, a skinnable GUI, password lock and text-to-speech support. Available for download now, if you’ve actually got a P2.

It isn’t hard to see to perks to Apple’s “one size fits all” approach to software for the iPhone and iPod touch. After making N95-3 (the regular ol’ N95 for North America) users wait months to get the software updates of their European counterparts, it took ‘em another few days to get the N95-4 (the 8GB version for North America) up to snuff as well. Of course, the N95 8GB already had a few of the software improvements, but this seems to pull it in line with the v20 firmware all the cool kids are rocking. Unfortunately it’s not all gravy, you’re going to have to do all the heavy lifting of backing up and re-installing your apps, and we’ve been having trouble getting the update to work at all on our particular 8GB — we’ll let you know how that goes. Still, the speed gains are (probably) worth all the hassle, so fire that sucker up and get updating!

Update: Problem solved, turned out to be a bum USB port on the PC we were using. You may also run into Vista compatibility issues using Nokia’s Software Update app, though we had no problems when we told Vista to front like XP SP2 using the shortcut. Proceed at your own risk!

It’s been a solid tick since the North American N95, also referred to as the N95-3, received a software update. For those clamoring for a little love from Nokia’s dev team, listen up: an administrator over at the outfit’s forums has admitted that the Software Update crew has a new version in the works. We’re told that they’ve heard the demands for a fresh release, and they’re toiling away in order to bring it to N95-3 owners by early June. Unfortunately, we’re not told what new features we can expect, and even worse, “early June” seems like eons away, doesn’t it?

For those of you who’ve recently dropped some dough on a new Fujifilm Z10fd or Z100fd, you’ve got some firmware to update. The company issued a couple of fixes today which tweak minor features on the cameras — though we’re sure a few folks will be happy to get them. The updates boost the startup speed in both models when using xD cards, enable camera-to-computer transfer with higher capacity media in the Z10fd, and adjust the underwater white balance on the Z100fd. Hit the read links, and begin your magical journey to freshness.

Heads up, Zunesters. Prepare for improved device recognition and improved reliability during sync (though not much else, apparently), because your 2.3 firmware has arrived. This update also fixes battery issues that some 30 / 80 users have been having, improving battery life with more power efficient codecs, which should come as a big relief. Wipe the tears of joy away from your eyes and go get your little buddy Zuned, er, tuned up. Nokia fans, you also get a cookie today — in the form of the first official update for your beloved internet tablet, the N810. Nokia hasn’t forsaken early adopters either, as N800 and 770 users get to reap the benefits and bug fixes of the OS update, too.
[Thanks, Kevyn, Ryan]

For all you fanatics on the edge of your seat over the iPhone v1.1.1 hacking situation, there’s some good news on the horizon. According to Erica Sadun — one of the soldiers heading up the fight to break Apple’s stranglehold — the iPhone / iPod touch dev team have indeed managed to Jailbreak the new update. Apparently, the general-use tool hasn’t made a showing yet, but baby steps have been taken, and the goods are sure to follow. So what can you expect? Third party apps are working, but will probably need to be recompiled due to the new frameworks, Springboard won’t recognize DisplayOrder.plist (included apps now seem to be hard-coded into the Springboard app), you can activate the phone with third-party workarounds, and the Mobile Terminal and BSD suite work, as well as ARM-compiled command-line utilities. Of very interesting note: Erica says that the new firmware references both Nike and a radio, and that the devs are taking up a fund to buy a cake and deliver it to Apple, courtesy of “the Crazy Ones.” She says the Jailbreak isn’t “ready for prime time,” and based on this info we tend to agree, but if you really want the full scoop, truck over to TUAW and check out the info for yourself.

If you haven’t already bitten the bullet and taken your unlocked iPhone down that scariest of paths, the 1.1.1 update, we’re here to sort out a bit of the hearsay from the actual and fairly inconvenient truth. Even if you have already updated, or never even unlocked or jailbroke your iPhone to begin with, there’s still a lot to learn, so let’s dive in, shall we?
Most people with a jailbroken iPhone will end up with a “factory-fresh” iPhone after the 1.1.1 firmware update. Your mileage may vary, and isolated incidents of bricking have occurred, but most people are just going to have a 3rd party-free, AT&T-only iPhone in their pocket when the day is through, and bricking seems to be just as common for a virgin iPhones as for jailbroken ones. As for when we’ll have full use of the iPhone again is unclear, but TUAW’s Erica Sadun says “don’t expect a jailbreak anytime soon,” which doesn’t seem promising. Apparently the security is going to be a whole lot harder to crack this time around.
