PS3 + SSD = faster load times, shattered budgets

PS3 + SSD = faster load times, shattered budgets

Sitting idle while your new PS3 game installs is painful, but since it’s all in the interest of reducing subsequent load times it’s worth the wait, right? Not for the impatient sods at ExtremeTech, who tried to speed things up further by swapping out their original 60GB PS3’s HDD with Intel’s hot new 80GB X25-M SSD. The result? Sadly, those multi-minute installs from disc were largely unaffected, since the limitation here is Blu-ray drive speed and not disk speed. However, installs of downloaded demos were upwards of 30-40 percent faster, as were post-installation load times in most games. That’s an impressive boost, but at a cost of about $600 for the SSD itself you’ll be spending about 50 percent more than an entire PS3 of the 80GB spinning disk variety. In other words, this one’s not for the frugal modders, but it is so choice if you have the means.

Ao-LAB’s eSATA SSD flash drive conveniently includes USB port

October 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re still baffled that traditional eSATA flash drives require power from the USB port in order to operate (at least until that Power Over eSATA initiative starts bearing fruit), but it seems that Ao-LAB has found a nice, practical workaround for the time being. The outfit’s eSATA / USB Combo Drive arrives in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavors and provides dual interfaces along with a convenient way to power it if you’re dead-set on using eSATA for transfers. And given that speeds over eSATA absolutely obliterate those over USB 2.0, you’re going to want to. Shame there’s no pricing / availability information, but we suspect you can get a few hundred of ‘em sans issue should you contact the company seeking a bulk contract.

Incrudo 8GB flash drive reeks of expensive

October 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Don’t spaz out or anything, but that thing you’re peering at above actually isn’t a small flask of cologne. No, no — it’s an 8GB USB drive, and it’s one of the most expensive you can buy. Reportedly built with titanium, the drive is water-resistant, crush-proof and fancied up further with a single red ruby. Sure, it’s 21,750 rubles ($837), but dollars to donuts they’d trade you one for a sure-to-be-authentic iPhone.

Corsair’s new 64GB Flash Voyager USB drive going for $199

October 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Progress is beautiful, is it not? Just shy of two years ago, Corsair blew minds with its ruggedized 16GB Flash Voyager, built to withstand all but the nastiest of drops and hold oodles of quarterly reports for a mere $299. Earlier this year, we saw the capacity double up and the price fall to just $229. Now, the bootable drive has been bloated further with a full 64GB of space, only this one’s available right now for just a buck ninety-nine. Dollars to donuts we’ll see a 128GB version in under 12 months for around $150, but don’t let that sway your purchasing decision or anything.

Crapgadget: gizmos to scar your USB port for life

September 27th, 2008 by

Some things just shouldn’t ever be plugged into your USB port. Not even that dusty, never-to-be-used socket in your 16-port USB hub. The gadgets you’ll see below are among the worst of the worst, with some being so awful, they almost deserve a purchase just to give you a laugh live and in-person. Seriously, just listen: an actual “thumb” drive, a USB key doused in cabbage, a mousepad that doubles as a Lars Ulrich-approved drum kit and a USB Hollywood Film Kit for those still in denial over that acting school rejection letter. There should really be laws against some of this rubbish, but since there isn’t, we’re putting it to you — drop your vote in below to let us know which of the following gizmos reeks the most. Good luck down there.

Recycled newsprint USB flash drive for the eco-minded geek

September 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re anything like us, you probably cringe every time a new USB flash drive is announced, but then the guilty pleasure takes over and you just have to look anyway. At first glance the “Recycle” from INF Import isn’t much to look at, but then we figured that’s kind of the point. After all, what better way to hide all your most precious and/or illicit data than in a totally bland enclosure that looks like something that chipped off your wall in the last earthquake? — which isn’t far off seeing as how it’s composed of recycled newspaper. Oddly enough no storage capacity is mentioned, so lets hope your stack of worldly secrets doesn’t run too large, or you may have to tile your walls with these babies.

TrekStor’s stylish USB stick doubles as bottle opener

September 15th, 2008 by

Is this a bottle opener that also functions as a flash drive, or is this a USB stick that just so happens to double as a bottle opener? While pundits debate that one, we’ll step in to tell you that this brilliant creation from the minds of TrekStor includes a solid, brushed aluminum housing, USB 2.0 connectivity and the ability to play nice with any major operating system. Regrettably, it looks as if this one will launch in Europe alone next month for anywhere between €6.99 ($10) and €49.99 $71) depending on size (1/2/4/8/16GB capacities). Please, upload responsibly.

ION’s LP 2 FLASH records LP straight to flash

September 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

When dealing with product names like FTD-HD2232HSR/BK, it’s quite refreshing to come across something such as this which explains itself so well. ION’s LP 2 FLASH turntable does exactly what you think it does — it transfers your old records directly to a USB flash drive, SD card or computer without any additional equipment. It even detects the gaps between tunes and creates individual tracks accordingly. It’s available now for £130 ($228), though we think that flight to the UK might just kill the deal.

Intel’s X25-M 80GB SSD ships this week for $595

September 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ll notice, HP isn’t using just any SSD drive to hit 24 hours of insanity with the EliteBook 6930p — it’s all about that Intel 80GB SSD, which has new optimizations to boost speed and apparently energy usage over current flash drives. Well, Intel also picked today to get all official about the drive itself, and it’s clear those improvements and Intel’s brand name come at a price: the 2.5-inch 80GB “X25-M” drive will retail for $595 when it hits this week. There’s also a 3.5-inch version, the X18-M, but we’re less clear on infos there. PC Per put the 2.5-incher through its paces, albeit with a slightly dated firmware version, and came away impressed, calling it the “top performing storage solution” period. We want.

Lenovo shows off stable of Olympics-themed USB flash drives

August 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Lenovo already rolled out one Olympics-themed flash drive long before the Beijing Games kicked off, but now that the Opening Ceremonies have come and gone, the outfit is showing off a few more for good measure. The Mascot series contains a half dozen colorful 4GB units that’ll go for around $30 apiece, while the so-called Medallions will only be available on the second-hand market thanks to the original batch selling out. Lastly, we’ve got five slightly different 1GB titanium drives that boast swiveling plugs and arrive in a swank mahogany box. Huzzah?

Hoshino debuts “biodegradable” FD-300 flash drive

August 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s far from the first company to attempt to make a more environmentally-friendly flash drive, but given the near disposable nature of them these days, that’s not exactly a bad thing. This latest drive from Hong Kong-based Hoshino also takes a decidedly different approach than other drives that simply keep the hazardous chemicals and whatnot to a minium, with it actually constructed out of polylactide (or PLA) made from corn that is, technically, biodegradable. The downside is that in order for it to be broken down, PLA needs to be blasted with heat for ten days on end at a specialized facility, which isn’t exactly the most direct route back into the ground, or an accessible option for everybody at the moment (there’s also the small matter of it being based on a food product). The drive also apparently isn’t available to the general public just yet, but companies interested in doing business with Hoshino can contact ‘em for more details.

LifeSource Wellness Connected family brings wireless health monitoring home

August 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Giving mere mortals the power to monitor their own health at home isn’t a shocking revelation, but LifeSource’s new Wellness Connected family takes in-home status checking to another plateau. Three products in the line are being announced: the Wireless Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor, Wireless Precision Scale, and Wireless Activity Monitor. The trifecta utilizes FitLinxx’s proprietary wireless technology in order to link together and provide users with information on blood pressure, weight, and “activity” that can be logged and analyzed on a typical computer. Regrettably, no pricing information was mentioned, but we get the sense that this trio won’t be coming without a noticeable premium.

plankton’s nailed USB drive: perfect for handymen, frustrated computer owners

July 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Be honest with yourself: has there ever been a time when you felt like taking a hammer to a computer of yours? Yes, of course. Apparently some of the clever minds at plankton figured out a way to let people live out that fantasy without totally destroying their partially functional machine. The “nailed” USB flash drive features 2GB of internal storage, an unmistakable design and a rather huge head to ensure that even novice nailers don’t miss the target. Of course, it doesn’t take any responsibility for damage incurred by inserting said drive in the previously referenced manner, but a few light taps should suffice in most instances. Pick one up now in galvanized or blued (okay, not really) for €29.50 ($46).

Severed USB cable is really a 2GB flash drive

July 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

This one goes out to the same folks who buy bullet hole stickers for their whip, hang stuffed arms from their tailgates and have those half-baseballs suctioned to their windshield — all in the name of garnering attention. HACKED! is a user creation-gone-commercial that features a severed USB cable with 2GB of internal capacity. For those not in the know, it looks as if you had a nasty encounter with a vicious canine (or a hacksaw), but in reality, it’s simply a 2GB flash drive in disguise. This has success written all over it.

Imation’s Atom Flash Drive is remarkably easy to mislay

June 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Imation’s Atom Flash Drive may not be the most capacious USB key you’ve ever seen — heck, it’s probably not even the smallest — but it is this company’s most diminutive of all time, and that just has to count for something. Available in 1/2/4/8GB sizes, these units feature Vista ReadyBoost compatibility and support for passwords while measuring less than 1.5-inches long and .5-inches wide. Slip one of these sub-1-ounce drives into your pocket today for $17.99 to $99.99, depending on capacity.

iriver rolls out discreet Domino flash drives

June 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

iriver sure does know how to cut away the excess on its products, and it looks like its new Domino flash drive is no exception. Available in 2GB and 4GB capacities, this one packs one of those sliding USB connectors that iriver seems to be increasingly fond of these days, and is available in your choice of white, silver, black, chocolate, pink or coral pink color options. No word on a release ’round these parts, unfortunately, but those in Korea can apparently get their hands on one now for the local equivalent of $21 or $34, depending on the capacity.
