CEIVA’s 8-inch CEIVAlife / CEIVAshare digiframes now on sale

October 15th, 2008 by

CEIVA’s duo of 8-inch digiframes started shipping out this month, but it appears the whole world was too busy ignoring digital photo frames on the whole to notice and / or care. Originally announced at CES, the CEIVAlife features a surprisingly striking design, a 640 x 480 resolution display, a multicard reader to support nearly every card format you’ve ever heard of, WiFi / phone / optional Ethernet connectivity and an optional PicturePlan service that “automatically uploads photos and receives photos via camera phones, online or from a PC.” The WiFi-ready CEIVAshare (shown after the break) sports a more traditional look and includes an 800 x 600 resolution LCD along with a more digestible $129.99 price tag. As you’ve likely gleaned, both can be purchased now — well before the gift giving season arrives.

T-Mobile’s CAMEO frame shows holiday snaps while you’re still taking them

T-Mobile's CAMEO frame shows holiday snaps while you're still taking them

It’s been nearly a year since Parrot announced its DF7700 GPRS-endowed picture frame, said to possess the mystical ability to pull photographs straight out of the ether. Now T-Mobile has pledged to bring Parrot’s magic frame to the US as the CAMEO, a $100 device that, when coupled with a $10/month service fee, can be the recipient of picture-bearing messages. When you get bored with that feature (or that fee), there’s a mini-USB port plus slots for SD/MMC cards that will enable it to accept pics in a more traditional manner. Its 7-inch screen has a 720 x 480 resolution and is surrounded by an interchangeable leather border guaranteed to look cheap in any decor — not just those with golden mirrors astride marble mantelpieces.

[Thanks, Mark]

HP trots out 10.4-inch df1000 / 3.5-inch df300a1 digiframes

September 15th, 2008 by

Don’t look now, but HP just got official with two new digital photo frames that could barely be any further apart in terms of size. On the small side, we’ve got the 3.5-inch df300a1, which rocks a 320 x 240 resolution display (with a 400:1 contrast ratio) and has room for up to 45 pictures on the internal memory. If that’s not enough, users can load up additional images by way of an SD / SDHC / MMC slot, and while the AC / USB power options are dandy, the 2-hour battery life on the rechargeable cell within is super-fine. Sitting tight on the other extreme is the 10.4-inch df1000, with 512MB of inbuilt storage (and its own USB port), a 800 x 600 resolution panel, two interchangeable frame mats, dual stereo speakers and support for video playback. You’ll be looking at $59 for the little guy, $219 for the big one.

Sony calls in Ericsson to launch 7-inch IDP-100 digiframe

September 10th, 2008 by

Look Sony, we were there in person to confirm that your digiframe building skills are world-class. Did you really need to phone up your lagging half (give or take a few dozen percent) for its help here? Whatever the case, the Q4-bound Sony Ericsson IDP-100 frame isn’t too different from its fiercest rivals; we’ve got a 7-inch WVGA screen, built-in Bluetooth, a M2 Memory Stick slot (with support for SD, microSD and MS Duo), USB port, enough internal storage for 500 snaps, an active touch control on the frame itself and a world clock for good measure. Somehow, Sony SE spins the omission of a remote as a good thing, but if it was smart, it would enable cellphone control and have a real winner on its hands. Just sayin’, is all.

Kodak’s P520 digiframe touts Quick Touch Border for off-screen flicking

August 22nd, 2008 by

We can all agree that touchscreens are pretty much the best thing ever, right? Good. Can we also agree that fingerprints on said screens are patently awful? Marvelous. Apparently Kodak is right in tune with us, as its 5-inch P520 digital photo frame enables owners to flick through photos without actually greasing up the LCD. The secret is the “Quick Touch Border,” a sensitive side panel that lets viewers slide their finger to move to the next photo. From what we can garner, that’s about all this thing really has going for it, but if that’s plenty for you, look for it next month at around $79.95.

7.6-inch OLED displays go mass production, next stop UMPCs and Kodak photo frames?

August 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sometime shortly after Philips introduced it first digital photo frame — let’s call it CES, January 2006 — something happened to the industry: it went to crap. Instead of focusing on quality displays vendors started tossing in gimmicks to sell their goods. This might change now that 7.6-inch OLEDs are going mass production.

Already, Kodak is rumored to have placed an order for the medium-sized panels set to roll off the lines in September at CMO’s Chi Mei EL (CMEL) factory. That should mean incredibly vibrant, thin, high-contrast frames with 16.7 million colors spread across 800 x 480 pixels just in time for the holidays. While dropping these pricey displays into low-cost netbooks would be a stretch, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few of those 7-inch UMPCs make the move to OLED as well.

Philips readying ultrathin 42-inch Essence TV for IFA debut?

August 15th, 2008 by

Let’s be honest — it’s been quite awhile since Philips has been seen as a big-shot in the world of HDTVs. Evidently the company is aiming to change all that in just a few weeks, as a fresh rumor puts a stunning new set on display at IFA. Reportedly, the lightweight 42-inch Essence TV will boast a 38-millimeter depth and will be made for wall hanging. Regrettably, that’s all the details that have seeped out thus far, but we’ll be finding out just how much truth there is to all of this in a fortnight.

Ask Engadget: Best digiframe / alarm clock combo?

July 31st, 2008 by

Frightening though it may be, the fall semester is just around the corner. You know what that means? You’ll actually have to get up at — wait for it — an appointed time. Carissa, being the proactive student she is, posed this question:

“Going to school in the fall, I’m looking for the ideal alarm clock to beat the late nights and what not and noticed a few digital photo frames / alarm clocks. I want a decent alarm clock that has battery backup and good resolution on the screen for viewing photos. An auxiliary audio jack would be a major plus. Which one do you guys recommend that falls under the 200 dollar mark? Thanks a million!”

Look at that — you all even received a thank you in advance! For those who’ve mastered the art of waking up on time and pretending to be a real live adult, which alarm clock / digiframe hybrid have you found to be supreme? Oh, and you know that question you’ve been hitting the snooze on? Yeah, send it on over to ask at engadget dawt com.

Parrot offers up $450 Andrée Putman-designed digiframe

July 16th, 2008 by

Remember that Andrée Putman-designed digital photo frame that was showcased in the UK earlier this year? Even if not, Parrot would like to remind you of this apparently exquisite device, which features commonplace luxuries like a 7-inch 720 x 480 resolution display, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, an SD / MMC card slot, an undisclosed amount of internal memory and USB connectivity. Oh, and did we mention the $449.99 price? Yeah, there’s that, too. Heard enough, haven’t you? (Psst… it ships on July 28th in the US.)

Parrot shows off Andrée Putman-designed digiframe in UK

May 2nd, 2008 by

Indifferent souls may have no qualms just snapping up the first digiframe they see, but that sect isn’t the target market for Parrot’s latest. The Andrée Putman-designed device is being shown around the UK at the moment, and aside from boasting a 7-inch display, a glossy black motif, rear-mounted buttons, auto-rotation, 10MB of built-in storage, an SD expansion slot and integrated Bluetooth (but no WiFi), you also get to hand over £250 to take it home. Right now, the piece is only available in London’s Few and Far store, but the company may try to roll it out nationwide if demand necessitates. Check it out on video in the read link below.

Pandigital teases your kitchen with HDTV / digital cookbook conglomerate

March 13th, 2008 by

We can’t say we’ve really spent any huge amount of time wondering just how converged kitchen devices can become, but apparently, the designers at Pandigital have. Announced today, the Kitchen HDTV / Digital Cookbook / Digital Photo Frame (really, that’s the name) stays true to itself in three big ways: acting as a 15-inch 720p HDTV (ATSC / NTSC tuner included), a digital cookbook (with pre-loaded recipes and space for more) and a digital photo frame. Packed within, you’ll find half a gigabyte of memory, a built-in alarm clock and an integrated 6-in-1 media card reader. And considering all that sauce you’ll be slinging, you’ll be thrilled to know that it’s sealed with glass and boasts interchangeable faceplates to fit varying moods. Heck, this thing even handles Motion JPEG, MPEG4 and AVI files — not a bad way to spice up your kitchen (and spend $399.99), eh?

Smartparts prepping a 32-inch photo frame, another with built-in printer for CES

January 3rd, 2008 by

The last time Smartparts hit us with CES-related photo frame PR, we pretty much told the company to stop wasting everyone’s time and either go big or go home — and it looks like they decided to go big, because this year we’re being treated to the world’s biggest digital photo frame, the 32-inch SP3200. The 16:9 frame sports a 1366×768 resolution and Smartpart’s OptiPix tech, but until we hear some pricing info we’re not going to be convinced that frame sizes haven’t hit the point of diminishing returns. Smartparts also says it’ll be rolling out the SP8PRT frame with built-in photo printer, but it’s not giving up any other details just yet — but we’ll get it out of ‘em in Vegas, just you wait.

Digital Foci rolling out trio of new digital photo frames

December 27th, 2007 by

Some nine months after Digital Foci unveiled the IMT-062, the firm is gearing up for CES 2008 with a trio of newcomers (entire family shown). Up first is the revamped Image Moments 6 (IMT-063), which sports a 5.7-inch 640 x 480 LED-backlit panel, a two-tone polished chrome finish and built-in stereo speakers. Moving on up, we’ve got the Image Moments 8 (IMT-083), which ups the ante with a 800 x 600 resolution panel and a 500:1 contrast ratio, and just in case that’s not enough screen real estate for you, there’s the 15-inch IMT-153, which packs a XGA (1,024 x 768) resolution, 700:1 contrast ratio, an AV input, interchangeable frame / mat and VESA mountability. The trifecta includes 200MB of storage, USB 2.0 connectivity and a multicard reader that handles a smorgasbord of formats, and all three should be available in March for $149, $199 and $399, respectively.

Mustek’s PF-i700 digiframe rocks an iPod dock

December 21st, 2007 by

Granted, you may have assumed that an iPod wouldn’t be caught dead snuggling with a digital photo frame, but strange though it may be, that assumption has just been proven wrong. Mustek’s PF-i700 inelegantly combines Apple’s darling with a 7-inch digiframe, giving house guests a perfect opportunity to squint at the iPod’s screen rather than focusing on what’s really important. Nevertheless, the unit sports a 480 x 243 resolution panel, stereo speakers, a headphone jack, USB port and support for SD, xD, MMC and Memory Stick / MS Pro cards. ‘Course, you can purportedly play back videos and photo slideshows stored on your iPod too, but you won’t be snagging one until next March when it lands for $129.99.

Computer Memories photo frame stores more than a 5 x 7

November 19th, 2007 by

Although this item doesn’t fall into the digital photo frame classification per se, there’s plenty of bits and bytes surrounding the 5- x 7-inch photo within. This clever creation features a relatively vanilla wooden frame, a glamorous stock shot of silhouettes on a beach and numerous sticks of random access memory adorning the borders. Yes, this here frame can hold “megabytes of loving memories,” but let’s be honest, you’re buying this for the conversation factor. Or, at least you will when it returns to stock. Of course, we’re pretty sure the mildly seasoned DIY’er could assemble one of these without much fuss, so click on through for one more angle if you’re ready to roll up those sleeves and get to it.

PhotoVu’s 17-inch RSS-enabled digital photo frame, the 1765W

November 15th, 2007 by

We’ve seen a few WiFi and RSS enabled digital photo frames from PhotoVu in the past, but they’ve all been overly large for our city-sized living spaces, which is why we’re happy to see the somewhat more reasonable 17-inch 1765w make its debut. The 16:10 frame reads all the obvious digital camera formats, but unlike most other frames, it includes plugins for popular apps like Picasa and iPhoto that let you handle file management directly inside your photo app, instead of having to play the scale-and-export game. Like all of PhotoVu’s other frames, the 1765w also features an RSS reader and web server for completely remote administration, and integration with services like Flickr, SmugMug, and .mac. Of course, all this hotness is going to cost you — the 1765w runs a steep $699 direct from PhotoVu.

Emtrace’s Photoskins digiframe fits in your wallet

November 14th, 2007 by

Just in case you weren’t exactly keen on buying a new wallet just to get a digital photo frame built in, Emtrace is offering up the perfect alternative. The ultrathin Photoskins PS100 is skinny enough to slide right inside your wallet, and it can also be docked in a cradle and used as a “Widget-Player.” Regrettably, that’s all the information that’s available right now, but hang tight, all the nitty-gritty details you crave should be just around the bend.

Parrot’s DF7700 MMS photo frame — go ahead, share your creepiness

October 23rd, 2007 by

Man, if you thought drunk dialing and texting was embarrassing, just wait until Parrot releases the world’s first MMS photo frame. Due before the holidays are through, the 7-inch, DF7700 display features a SIM card with dedicated call number built directly into the frame. It also touts USB and SD slots for quick image transfer as well as position and light sensors to keep photos upright and looking their best regardless of your own tragic state of disrepair. Sorry, no price or product images (that’s their DF7220 up there), but we think we’ve captured the typical holiday break-up scenario for you above, eh?

cenOmax enters digiframe game with seven-inch F7012A

October 20th, 2007 by

If you’re spinnin’ your wheels trying to figure out exactly who cenOmax is, simmer down — it’s only a new spinoff of Lite-On, okay? Now that we’ve handled that, the firm’s first foray into the digital photo frame arena is the seven-inch F7012A, which sports a 480 x 234 resolution panel, 400:1 contrast ratio, a USB port and a multicard reader capable of handling 15 different formats. Furthermore, this one supports MP3 playback through its built-in speakers, allows for automatic slideshows and also includes an integrated alarm / calendar. For Halloween (er, right?), the frame comes bundled with black (shown after the break) and orange clip-on frames, but users can theme it up however they like for a variety of occasions. As of now, this one’s available only in Europe for £48 ($98), but we’ve got enough alternatives here in the US to keep our hearts from breaking.
