DoCoMo and Fujitsu show off splitting phone at CEATEC

September 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

DoCoMo and Fujitsu are showing off some interesting phone tech in Japan at this year’s CEATEC, particularly a concept device which can be split into two pieces. The gadget features a separate screen and keyboard segment, and the pieces can be configured in a standard flip-phone-like arrangement, or snapped together to form an X1 or Touch Pro-esque landscape QWERTY variation. The two halves are held together by magnets and communicate via Bluetooth. Of course, right now this is very much in the concept phase, and honestly — aren’t we trying to minimize the amount of electronic components we’re carting around? Still, it’s a fairly slick design, and certainly a new way of thinking about phones. Take another look after the break, and hit the read link for a slew of pics.

WD and Fujitsu could offer 1TB 2.5-inch HDDs in 2010, sun could rise tomorrow

September 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve been around this stuff long enough to know that hard drives just keep getting bigger with time, but if you were eager to know exactly when a 1TB unit would be prepped and ready for your notebook, try 2010. According to those infamous “undisclosed sources,” both Western Digital (which started shipping a 500-gigger today) and Fujitsu are looking to pump out 750GB 2.5-inch HDDs by mid-2009 and 1TB variants in 2010. Keep the faith, brethren.

Fujitsu Asia Pacific intros the L1010

September 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Like your laptops available in soft, colorful tones? Looking for something a bit entry level? Fujitsu may have just the thing for you. The company has just introduced its L1010 mid-priced laptop (in Asia, at least), and it looks like just the right thing if you’re not trying to break the bank or win friends and influence others. The L1010 packs a Core 2 Duo CPU atop the PM45/GM45 Express Chipset, a 1280 x 800, 14.1-inch LCD display, an NVIDIA 9300M GS graphics card with 256MB of RAM, WiFi, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and HDMI outs. The laptops come in white and pink gold, black, turquoise blue, pink and purple color configurations, though the press release somehow fails to make mention of RAM or hard drive options. Fujitsu is mum on price and release date, but we’d say not too expensive, and fairly soon.

Fujitsu 8.9-inch LifeBook P1630 sashays into the FCC’s lair

September 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Fujitsu’s looking to keep its typically small and light P-series alive by dumping the wee P1630 into the FCC’s oh-so-capable hands. Based on the filed documentation, the unit will possess a 8.9-inch 1,280 x 768 resolution display, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, Intel’s GMA X4500 graphics set, up to 2GB of RAM, a fingerprint reader, WiFi / Bluetooth, Ethernet and a smattering of ports including SD, VGA out, USB (x2) and PCMCIA. The 2.2-pound lappie doesn’t have any sort of official price or release date, but eager LifeBook fanatics can rest assured that it’s closer to commercial release today than it was yesterday. Er, before it hit the FCC. Never mind.

Fujitsu announces M1010 netbook for Q4 launch

August 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Fujitsu finally got official with its Amilo Mini netbook yesterday after not exactly keeping it a secret these past few months, and it’s now gone out and announced another curiously similar netbook, the M1010, which may or may not actually just be slight variation of the Amilo Mini. Like the Mini, the M1010 weighs in at 2.2 pounds and will pack an 8.9-inch display, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, plus some removable clip-on covers in an “array of delightful colors.” Fujitsu doesn’t seem to be quite ready to go any further than that, however, which could certainly suggest that it’s not one and the same as the Amilo Mini, as could the fact that Fujitsu describes the M1010 as “easy on the wallet,” which doesn’t exactly apply to the nearly $600 Amilo Mini. We should know for sure soon enough either way though, as the netbook is set to launch sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

Fujitsu’s U2010 goes for 11 hours strong with extended battery

August 21st, 2008 by

Fujitsu’s cute-as-a-button U2010 (or U820, for you USers) was shown off over in Japan at a company event, and while most of the specifications were already hammered out, one particular tidbit at AkihabaraNews took us by surprise. With seemingly every other netbook out there getting blasted for lackluster battery life, the U2010 will reportedly support an extended cell that offers up 11.1 hours of run time. We’ve no idea if that’s a “maximum” number based on “optimal” usage, but no matter how you dice it, it sure beats the (also respectable) 5.3 hour rating given to the standard battery.

Fujitsu U2010 comes to Japan as the LOOX U / B50N, all tokidoki’d up

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sure, we’re getting Fujitsu’s U2010 convertible UMPC Stateside pretty soon as the LifeBook U820, but we’re crazy jealous that our friends in Japan are getting this hot tokidoki version, labeled as the LOOX U / B50N. Same kit underneath, but we’d bet that exclusive limited-edition skin will command a premium — now if we only had pricing info, we’d know whether or not to get our clandestine grey-market importers on the case. Anytime, Fujitsu.

Fujitsu Siemens ships world’s first zero-watt monitor

August 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s been a solid tick since we’ve seen a new monitor from Fujitsu Siemens, but apparently it’s been spending a lot of time on its SCENICVIEW Premium Line ECO range. Announced today, the 20-inch P20W-5 ECO and the 22-inch P22W-5 ECO are being hailed as the planet’s first to feature power supplies that “automatically switch off completely in power-save mode.” The whole zero-watt bit comes from their ability to suck down precisely no power when not in use, while the majority of LCDs continue to draw slivers of energy even in standby. Furthermore, the new devices include the DisplayView AutoBright functionality, which automatically adjusts brightness “in harmony with ambient light” in order to net even greater power savings. Both screens are available now in Europe starting at €419 ($625), though 24- and 26-inch models are arriving next month.

Fujitsu LifeBook U2010 gets official in five different colors

August 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Fujitsu has been showing off its LifeBook U2010 netbook / convertible laptop for some time now, but it’s just now getting completely official with it, and it’s taken the opportunity to reveal all five colors we can expect to see the laptop available in. That includes the basic black option we’ve been seeing all along (now called Ocean Black), as well as Pink Gold, Cool Silver, Fuschia Red, and Luminous Blue. Otherwise, the laptop’s specs look to be in line with what we’ve been expecting, including a 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 5.6-inch WXGA display, an optional 64GB SSD drive (or a standard 60GB hard drive), a promised 8 hours of battery life from the extended battery, and the usual built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam. Still no final word on a price though, or any indication of a release date for the US-centric U820 model, which the FCC has already kindly let out of the bag.

Fujitsu’s Lifebook U2010 headed to the US as the U820

August 4th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ve been squirming around like you’ve got ants in your pants wondering if Fujitsu’s tiny Lifebook U2010 was going to make its way Stateside — feel free to relax. Word on the street — and from the FCC — is that the diminutive and convertible laptop will come to our fair shores as the U820. The device actually gets a bump in the screen department, featuring a 1280 x 800 display as opposed to the previous specs we had detailing a 1024 x 600 touchscreen. Hit the read link to learn pretty much everything you could ever hope to know about the laptop… and then some.

Fujitsu Siemens’ Amilo Mini caught with interchangeable lids

July 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

IFA’s coming up soon, and that means Fujitsu Siemens will officially unveil the Amilo Mini. Yeah, you’ve already heard about some preliminary specifications and witnessed the unit itself on video, but did you know about the interchangeable lids? In a ploy a siphon away even more cash from netbook buyers, the firm is very, very intelligently looking to offer at least a couple of accessories to distinguish your unit from everyone else’s. It makes sense, really — cute little notebooks deserve cute little trinkets to jazz them up. Pure brilliance, we say. See the lids on video after the break.

Fujitsu’s Lifebook U2010 gets new pics, specs

July 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve caught a few glimpses of Fujitsu’s Lifebook U2010 in the past, but now we’ve got a whole handful of new shots of the crazy-versatile device, plus some fresh video and actual, honest-to-goodness specs. According to a Vietnamese forum, the miniature laptop / tablet will feature an Intel Atom CPU (at 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz), a 5.6-inch 1024 x 768 display, an 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, a 3G radio, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and will weigh 680 grams (about 1.5 lbs). No word on a street date or regions for the device right now, but the price is said to clock in around a hefty $1300.

Report says Sony is planning a netbook, apparently news to Sony

July 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’d heard some rumblings about Sony’s plans to introduce a netbook of its own a little while back, but Sony exec Stan Glasgow seemed to put a damper on those the other day when he flat out said that the company was “not looking at competing with Asus.” A report from China’s Economic Daily News is now adding a bit more confusion to the matter, however, with it claiming that Foxconn will be providing at least some components for, you guessed it, a forthcoming Sony netbook. What’s more, that same report also says that a number of other Japanese PC makers, including netbook nay-sayer Fujitsu, are also planning to get in on the low-cost laptop action in the fourth quarter of this year, although they apparently aren’t quite ready to disclose any manufacturing partnerships just yet. Of course, it’s entirely possible that these low-cost laptops could be just that, and not technically netbooks, but it certainly wouldn’t be the first time that companies have jumped on a bandwagon after letting it pass by the first time around.

Some analysts, PC makers express concern about netbooks

July 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

While some may say that netbooks have already jumped the shark, others in the industry are now expressing some real concern about the low-cost, low-power laptops and, as the New York Times reports, they’re warning that they could cut into PC makers’ already thin profit margins. What’s more, that word doesn’t only come from the expected doomsayer analysts, but from some top tier PC makers as well. That includes Fujitsu, who’s senior director of mobile product management, Paul Moore, says, “We’re sitting on the sidelines not because we’re lazy. We’re sitting on the sidelines because even if this category takes off, and we get our piece of the pie, it doesn’t add up.” That’s a sentiment echoed by Sony, who’s Stan Glasgow says simply that, “we are not looking at competing with Asus,” although he adds that Sony is “investigating” what consumers want in a second PC. Even Dell, which is set to dip its toes into the netbook waters, seems a bit hesitant, with vice president of marketing Michael Tatelman saying he thinks the devices have “limited consumer appeal,” and that they’re good for a “30- to 90-minute experience,” but not for more intensive tasks. Of course, that’s all before any of them heard of the new world’s cheapest laptop, so there’s no telling how things may shake out now.

[Thanks, Penny]

Fujitsu keeps HandyDrive portable HDD line alive with 500GB edition

July 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Father Time isn’t slowing things down anytime soon, so it’s good to see that Fujitsu is doing its best to keep up. Merely two months after taking the HandyDrive to 400GB, the firm has introduced an all new, totally marvelous 500GB iteration. Featuring the “world’s highest capacity 2.5-inch external hard disk drive (likely the MHZ2 BT),” this bus-powered unit hasn’t changed a bit in design, but it will hold a half-terabyte of information (in case you missed it the first go ’round). Grab it later this month in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for €229 ($364).

Fujitsu to launch FLEPia color e-ink e-books in the fall?

July 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We first saw Fujitsu’s FLEPia e-books with the company’s color e-ink tech over a year ago, but rumor has it they’re finally getting close to launch. That’s the word according to Nikkei, which says that the A4-sized readers won’t feature an integrated backlight, but still be able to run for up to 50 hours on a single charge. The WiFi-capable unit is said to cost ¥100,000 ($941), but other specs are still up in the air — hopefully they’ll be changing the name as well.

Fujitsu Siemens’ Lasso external graphics card get spotted, should hit retail soon

July 4th, 2008 by

An external graphics card that’s actually nearing release? Be still our hearts! Fujitsu Siemens’ recently leaked external unit, which will be based on ATI XGP technology, is actually really, really close to hitting retail — according to a piece over at Fudzilla, anyway. Slated to be titled Lasso, the RV670-based device should be more than enough to handle basic tasks, but unfortunately, benchmarks were off limits. On the upside, digital photography was not, so head on down to the read link for a few more snaps.

Typhoon Touch Technologies sues everyone for infringing touch computing patents

June 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We first heard of Typhoon Touch Technologies back in December when the company sued Dell and Motion Computing for infringing two of its patents on touchscreen computers, and armed with favorable settlements from Motion Computing and Electrovaya, Typhoon’s gone ahead and joined a host of other companies to the Dell suit. Roll call: would Apple, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Lenovo, Panasonic, HTC, Palm, Samsung, Nokia, and LG all report to Eastern District of Texas, please? Lunch will not be provided.

Fujitsu T5010 tablet PC breaks cover at university bookstore

June 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Fujitsu doesn’t seem to have gotten official with it just yet but, if the Virginia Tech University bookstore is any indication, it looks like the company is all but set to launch its new T5010 tablet PC. Assuming their specs are on the mark, you can apparently look forward to this one packing a 13.3-inch LED backlit WUXGA display, 2GB of RAM, an unspecified 45nm Core 2 Duo processor, a 120GB hard drive, the usual integrated Intel graphics, and a built-in DVD burner — plus the standard built-in webcam and fingerprint reader. All that’ll set you back $1,999 (including an HP all-in-one printer). While there’s no word on an exact release date, the bookstore will apparently have models on display in July, with units available for pick-up in time for the August move-in.
