HTC's Magic manual exposed for your downloading pleasure

We’ve seen it in slimming black and striking white (way before Labor Day), and now we’ve got some titillating pictures of what’s going on underneath courtesy of HTC’s own service manuals, leaked in PDF form for both the G2/Magic and the T8290/Quartz. Both offer nearly 100 sultry pages of assembly and disassembly information, including full photo spreads showing the phones’ naughty bits splayed to the winds. For those who read the articles, there are comprehensive descriptions on how to re-flash the pair, which should come in handy if you’re never content to leave good enough ROMs alone. The only question now is: where can we get a pair of those dashing pin-striped gloves?

Optus’ HTC Dream spotted, photographed passionately

March 9th, 2009 by

Low light, candles in the corner — seriously folks, these shots are downright sultry. Optus’ HTC G1, er, Dream has been spotted and photographed in some random corner of the world, and while it basically looks like every other G1 you’ve ever seen in this hue, we’re absolutely certain that Australians in attendance are more than happy to have a look. You know where to head for the rest.

[Thanks, Tom]

HTC Magic stops by FCC for a quick ‘hello,’ no AWS in sight

February 24th, 2009 by

After Google had accidentally dropped the T-Bomb during its offline Gmail demo, we’d half expected (okay, hoped) that the version of the Sapphire passing through the FCC would rock T-Mobile’s 1700MHz AWS goodies for US 3G. Alas, it doesn’t — implying that there’ll be at least two versions of the phone launched around the world, which really doesn’t come as a surprise considering the G1 takes the same route. We figure this particular variant probably does 2100MHz HSDPA in addition to the usual array of GSM / EDGE bands, so rest easy, Vodafone customers, you’ll have a perfectly legal handset should you decide to cross the pond.

Google’s offline Gmail demo reveals seemingly US-bound HTC Magic — is this the T-Mobile G2?

February 19th, 2009 by

So is Vodafone’s HTC Magic the same as T-Mobile’s G2? Could very well be, considering Google’s little slip-up during a demo of its offline Gmail support on mobile devices. What we have up there clearly ain’t a Voda logo, and if our knowledge of T-Mobile logos around the world is accurate, this isn’t a European T-Mobile logo, either — it’s straight-up Yankee. Would certainly make a ton of sense for this thing to shake out as the G2, and there’s no shortage of folks holding out for a keyboardless Android device ’round there… so your move, T-Mob.

HTC’s G2 “Sapphire 2.0″ caught slumming in the wilds

January 21st, 2009 by

Well, well, lookie here… HTC’s G2 followup to the original Android phone getting a good man-handling in the wild. Expected in May, the images were leaked without specs or any real details. Still, it’s clearly the G2 / Sapphire 2.0 handset with 3.2 megapixel camera leaked just a few weeks back along-side the rest of HTC’s 2009 models. Hey, you didn’t need that physical keyboard anyway, right?

Dream G2 doesn’t get the irony of ripping off an open-source OS

January 15th, 2009 by

So we guess we gave Sciphone too much credit when we thought its G2 was running real, actual, genuine Android. “Why would anyone ape the user interface,” we thought, “when the codebase is available to whomever wants it?” Silly us! Turns out the G2’s guts have absolutely nothing to do with Android other than the fact that the UI does a commendable job of looking like the real thing, though the presence of a stylus gives credibility to its KIRF roots. The hardware (which even gets a “Google” logo on the back) actually doesn’t look that bad — and it’s loaded with some apps that you won’t find on a G1 — but we’ll hedge our bets and wait for a new HTC, thank you very much.

T-Mobile getting HTC Rhodium as the Wing II, Sapphire as the G2?

January 12th, 2009 by

T-Mobile USA has a pretty solid relationship with HTC, considering it sells the Shadow, the Wing, and the G1 at the moment — and seeing how the G1’s doing a nice little spot of business for them, it stand to reason that they’d be looking to continue the good times through ‘09. We’re hearing from TmoNews that one HTC devices leaked today — the Sapphire — is the G2, while another source is telling us that the Rhodium is the Wing II, giving T-Mob solid, high-end Windows Mobile and Android devices alike in the new year. The original Wing is older than your grandmother (bless her heart), and as for the G1… well, let’s be honest, these guys can take as much Android gear as HTC will give ‘em right now. Bring it, fellas.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Will there or won’t there be a T-Mobile G2 in the near future?

December 20th, 2008 by

T-Mobile and HTC are clearly both pretty committed to Android — and cheers to that, may we add — but the real question is: is the “G” series a franchise or a one-hit wonder? And if it’s a franchise, just how soon might we see a G2? Logic would suggest that T-Mobile would want to give the G1 a little breathing room before piling on cousins that risk cannibalizing market share, but Cell Phone Signal is claiming we’ll see the G2 next month, and what’s more, the spec sheet reads like a dream: 5-megapixel autofocus primary cam with VGA secondary cam for video calling, full touchscreen, and WiFi — in other words, something like the “Touch HD with Android” that everyone had been hoping for. Come on now, video calling? Seriously?

It gets juicier, though. Boy Genius Report has an unconfirmed follow-up rumor citing a tipster that Cell Phone Signal’s spec sheet is basically accurate, but that the launch date’s been pushed back to April. The tipster goes on to say that the device won’t be exclusive to T-Mobile and will be sold elsewhere around the world — though not under the G series branding — and it’ll lack a QWERTY keyboard but maintain the trackball we all know and love / hate from the G1. Oh, and get this: they claim there’s already a G3 in the works, too. Any way you slice it, there are bound to be plenty of Android devices launching around the globe in ‘09, but if this turns out to be even remotely accurate, is it really the right way for T-Mobile to be going about its business?

Slacker G2 gets reviewed

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Slacker must have figured our jetsetter friends at Gadling needed some more tunes for their travels, because it hooked them up with an early review unit of the new Slacker G2 WiFi radio. Nothing much has changed about the Slacker service, which basically auto-downloads your choice of pre-programmed channels to the 4 or 8GB or internal storage over WiFi (you can get on Wayport and AT&T hotspots using Devicescape), but the G2 hardware is significantly revised, with a new slimmer, curvaceous shape with relocated controls, glossy front, and premium headphones. We’re up in the air over whether the $90/year or $10/mo service fees are worth it, especially now that Zune 3.0 also does pre-programmed Channels with the $15 Zune Pass, but if you’re interested hit up the read link for the full-on review.

Angstrom Power shows off G2 portable fuel cell power source

May 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It looks like Angstrom Power is working on more than just fuel cells for MOTOSLVR L7 prototypes, with the company now also touting its G2 portable fuel cell power source that promises to keep a whole range of gadgets charged up. This one packs eight V60 Fuel Cell Modules that combine to provide a full two watts of power, which can be used to top off any device that charges via a USB connection. According to Angstrom, the G2 itself can also be replenished “in minutes,” either by using an Angstrom P2 Portable Refueling Cartridge or an R1 Refueling Station, though it can apparently withstand “several charges” before it needs to be refueled. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but it seems safe to bet that it’ll show up before those fuel cell-powered cellphones, which are apparently still on track for a release somewhere in the neighborhood of 2010.

GE unveils the geotagging 10 megapixel E1050, eight other new cams

January 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve harshed on GE’s cameras before, but the company showed up at PMA with a new model called the E1050 (pictured) that’s actually pretty slick. The 10 megapixel shooter features a 5x optical zoom, HD-res video mode, HDMI out, a 3-inch touchscreen, and an integrated GPS radio that syncs up with your computer to automatically geotag your shots. All for just $249 — even if thing takes just average pictures, that’s quite a bargain. We’ll have a hands-on soon, and read on for specs on the rest of GE’s 2008 lineup, all of which include face and blink detection.

Asus intros G2K, A7K, and F7K gaming laptops

October 12th, 2007 by

Filed under:

It looks like gamers not wanting to be tied to their desks will soon have a few new options to consider from Asus, which is apparently set to release no less than three new gaming-minded laptops. At the head of the pack is the company’s latest G2 model, the G2K, which boasts a 17.1 -inch 1440 x 900 display, along with a 2.0GHz Turion 64 X2 TL60 processor, 2GB RAM, a 200GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and ATI HD2600 graphics with 256MB of dedicated memory, among other fairly top-end features (not to mention the usual matching backpack and mouse). Further on down the line, the company’s new A7K model boasts many of the same specs, with the exception of a slightly slower 1.8GHz Turion 64 X2 TL56 processor, while the F7K opts for a 1.9GHz Turion 64 X2 TL58 processor and ATI HD2400 graphics. No word on a price for any of them, but they’re apparently all set to officially launch sometime this month.
