This one isn’t quite as dodgy as they come, but the very notable limitations really keep this from being the whiz-bang hack that it appears to be on the surface. Hacker StreetskaterFU had no trouble getting confirmation from others that his method of running Blu-ray games from the PlayStation 3’s hard drive was indeed legitimate, but it is only confirmed to work with select “older titles” including Warhawk, MotorStorm and Call of Duty 3. To make matters worse, instructions are sketchy at best, but at least there’s a video of the process working after the break. Let us know how things go should you give this a whirl.

We already knew that Id Software co-founder John Carmack was on board with the iPhone to some extent, but at the now-happening QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas he’s revealed just how impressed with the device he really is. According to Apple Insider, while Carmack admits that graphics memory could be a limiting factor, he describes the phone’s hardware as equivalent to a Dreamcast and almost on par with a PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. He also sees it as far superior, at least in terms of raw specs, than the two big dedicated handheld consoles out there, saying that is “more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined.” Unfortuantely, he didn’t have any actual games to show off, but he did at least confirm that Id has two “tentative titles” in the works, including a “conventional mobile game,” and one that pushes the iPhone’s graphics capabilities.

The last time we heard someone proclaim the death of the game console, it was EA’s head of international distribution saying that an open gaming platform distributed within cable and satellite set-top boxes would take over within 15 years — a prediction at which we laughed pretty heartily, given that most cable companies can’t even manage to get a functional DVR out the door. So it’s fairly surprising to hear the former VP of Xbox Europe make the exact same prediction, and bump up the timeline pretty dramatically: Sandy Duncan, who was with MS for 15 years, recently said that dedicated game devices “will die in the next five to 10 years,” and that “most of this stuff will be ‘virtualized’ as web services by your content provider.” Of course, Duncan’s now with YoYo Games, which is a web-based gaming company, so he might be a little biased, but there’s truth in his statement that the console gaming market is risky and that launch costs of new hardware are incredibly high. Still, as Duncan should know first-hand, it’s an investment that can definitely pay off, and we think consumers are always going to demand choice and quality — two things that aren’t exactly synonymous with cable and satellite hardware.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/EA_Mobile_s_Spore_is_the_first_3rd_party_iPhone_game’; Just in case you didn’t catch the blip earlier between Steve’s announcement of the iPhone SDK and the App Store, here’s some fantastic news for the thumb-happy sect: Spore is coming to the iPhone. In fact, the EA Mobile title will go down as “the first 3rd party game on the iPhone.” Sadly, it won’t actually be available until September, but at least you’ve got a month to circle on your calender, right? Additionally, EA affirmed that there were “other games in early stages of development,” and that it was “actively using the new iPhone SDK to develop games for the iPhone OS.” Jump on past the break for the full release.

Truth be told, we could sort of see this one coming — after all, why wouldn’t N-Gage developers seek to use a handset’s built-in functions to enhance gameplay? Nevertheless, the folks at Nok Nok were able to pick the brain of Will Shen, N-Gage Head of Production in North America, and found out quite a few tidbits about the future of the platform. Reportedly, Mr. Shen went so far as to confirm that it is “looking at creating games that harness the power of [a mobile’s] built-in camera, GPS receiver and any relevant skill [that it] may possess that could help inspire and execute innovative games.” Granted, location-based titles aren’t anything new in the grand scheme of things, but Shen also noted that his team is looking to “focus on innovation” rather than “gimmick gaming.” Marvelous — now let’s get this stuff rolled out en masse, shall we?

The delayed, revamped N-Gage client still isn’t ready for prime time, but the First Access preview service — which is just a little bit more functional than the preview shipping on some Nseries devices already — has finally launched. The service introduces a full suite of social gaming tools (though with compatibility officially limited to N81s for the moment, that’s a very small social circle indeed) and lets users download several game demos; Nokia promises that the service will evolve and expand as it ramps up for a full-scale release, so don’t get too down on the lack of content and community just yet. Oh, and just a word of warning, downloaders: your data will get reset prior to the full-scale launch, so don’t get too attached to your high scores, k?

Considering EA is the king of repackaging the same game for multiple consoles (and multiple years — hello, Madden), you wouldn’t expect the company’s head of international distribution to call for a single universal platform, but that’s exactly what Gerhard Florin told the BBC he wants. “We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible,” he said, adding that “You don’t need an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii — the consumer won’t even realise the platform it is being played on.” Florin’s comments were based on his prediction that set-top boxes would eventually contain enough horsepower to stream and run games over the net, a development he said would kill the market for dedicated consoles in the next fifteen years — which means he’s obviously never had to struggle with a cable company DVR, because we think we’ll stick with a console that can register more than three button presses without locking up, thanks much.
