New York Giants Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress is having an awesome season. The controversial receiver accidentally shot himself in the leg early Saturday morning after a concealed gun slipped out of his waistband at a Manhattan club, according to NY Daily News:
Burress, 31, who was sporting flashy jewelry and carrying loads of cash, told club management he needed the gun to protect himself, sources said.
The mercurial Giant was waved inside the crowded Latin-themed club on Lexington Ave. about midnight. He downed several drinks, making already jittery security guards more nervous about his weapon.
As Burress was being led into a VIP area, with a drink in his hand, the gun slipped down his pants leg. He reached for the weapon, but fumbled it and it went off, sources said. The bullet tore through Burress’ already injured right thigh, police said.
“[The bullet] went in and out. No bones,” Chief Michael Collins, a police spokesman, said.
Of course, discharging a loaded handgun in a club might, I dunno, get you fucking arrested. So with some quick thinking, Plaxico employed the help of Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce who stashed the gun in Jersey. Just like that episode of The Sopranos where Tony gets the paper in his boxers:
Panicking, Burress told his teammate not to call 911 for an ambulance, sources said.
Pierce helped the bloodied receiver out of the club before taking off with the gun and stashing it somewhere in New Jersey, sources said.
Burress was afraid to go to the hospital, but two hours after the shooting, at 2 a.m., his wife, Tiffany, and a friend escorted him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. He was treated and released at about 12:45 p.m., sources said.
But a hospital spokeswoman denied that Burress was ever there.
Cops only learned about the incident after Giants employees quietly reached out to the NYPD to report it, sources said.
Damn! Ratted out by your own team? That’s gotta sting. Probably not as much a bullet to your already-injured leg, but Jesus. Anyway, let this be a lesson to the kids out there: Always use a holster.
And that’s one to grow on…

We’ve seen no shortage of unorthodox alarm clocks, but Bandai’s latest creation is nothing short of spectacular. Rather than making users defuse a bomb or catch a runaway helicopter, the appropriately named Gun O’clock actually forces heavy sleepers to aim a gun and successfully strike the bullseye to shut the undoubtedly obnoxious alarm up. Best of all, those who enjoy challenges can set it to “Hard” mode, requiring them to blast the center target no fewer than five times in order to hush it; after you’re satisfactorily awake, you can utilize the game mode to work on your aim. This magnificent wonder is all set to launch in Japan next month for ¥4,095 ($41), but we don’t see any obvious signs of it ever coming Stateside. Anyone feeling an online petition? We hear those work really well.

It’s admittedly difficult to take a company named Thrustmaster seriously (especially on casual Friday), but given that it has recently pumped out what are likely the two best Wiimote accessories of all time, we’ll give it a pass this go ’round. Speaking of, we’d like to point out that these two have been around the block a time or two, but that doesn’t make the red and blue dueling Glow Sabers (each packing 17 LEDs, mind you) and the Dual Trigger Gun (complete with Nunchuck holster!) any less gnarly. The Glow Saber 2-pack is available right about now for $34.99, while the Dual Trigger Gun (shown after the break) should land in short order for $17.99.

When you’re caught between the lines of dueling mercenary armies, trapped in a rapidly aging body that doesn’t quite react the way it used to, you need a reliable side arm to protect yourself. That was Solid Snake’s situation in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, his chosen weapon the Silver Wolf pistol, recreated here in as a Japanese fan’s stainless steel and rubber band DIY masterpiece. Constructed of numerous cross-drilled plates and featuring both a laser sight and integrated flashlight, the result looks to be impressively accurate and likely quite painful, as you can see for yourself in a video just below. Bonus reloading footage included!

Okay, okay — we get it. So maybe there’s just not enough room in a genuine Zapper to fit all the necessary innards of a Nintendo Entertainment System into, but it’s just a bit weird to see the Big N’s antiquated console crammed into some other light gun. Similar to the NES-in-an-NES-controller mod we peeked earlier this week, this unit includes a plethora of games and all the controls you need; just plug it up to a TV, pop a few batteries in there and you’re golden. Is it any surprise this guy was tracked down on Ben Heck’s own forums?

Just when we thought we had enough problems with cops thinking innocent MP3 players were weapons, along comes this Magpul prototype FMG-9 submachine gun. Ordinarily disguised as a flashlight, a touch of a button lets you pull a Megatron and flip out a fully-functional submachine gun. If you don’t want either, the whole thing folds into a back-pocket sized brick — but as the demo dude says, if it “gets nasty, get down to business.” Video after the break.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Man_arrested_for_using_MP3_player_7_21_PM_7_h’; Next time you’re reaching down for that iPod or Zune (or anything else for that matter), take care that you don’t alarm the authorities with any suspicious movements — or you could end up like the UK’s Darren Nixon. Apparently, the mild-mannered mechanic was on his way home from work when the Bobbies surrounded him and drew their guns, believing that the MP3 player in his pocket was a firearm. According to the Daily Mail, Mr. Nixon was tracked on CCTV, arrested at gunpoint, swabbed for DNA, fingerprinted, and thrown in a cell — all for listening to a bootleg of Chinese Democracy on a 4GB Philips GoGear. Said Darren, “I was really shocked when I saw the guns. They were pointing them right at me. It was a pretty scary experience. I had no idea what was going on.” After the team of Mentat cops realized their mistake, they couldn’t even offer an apology, said Nixon, “They just dropped me off at home and said a quick ’sorry for any inconvenience’, and that was all I got from them, which I thought was pretty out of order.” Once again, a hot serving of sweet justice.

Oh sure, we’ve seen homegrown Wii Zappers before, but nothing screams janky like an iteration crafted from spare plastic acrylate sheets, or better yet, your recently finished box of Corn Flakes. That’s right kids, you can save yourself quite a few buckaroos by simply swallowing your pride, heading down to the read link and printing out a template to create your very own Wii Zapper accessory. ‘Course, the sky’s really the limit with this one, but may we be the first to ask that you not use colorful sheets of cardboard if at all possible? Thanks.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Hello_Kitty_AR_15_assault_rifle’; If the Disintegrator had you quivering in your combat boots, we’d recommend grabbing a bullet proof vest and having a seat for this one. Apparently, a fellow in California has dressed up a (legal) AR-15 assault rifle in Hello Kitty fashion for his better half, and while it’d be way too easy to pass this off as a fantastic Photoshop job, the pictures awaiting you in the read link definitely prove otherwise. Cute never looked so evil.

Believe it or not, devices used to see through walls are far from revolutionary, but hey, we’ll take every one we can get. Reportedly, Physical Optics Corporation has concocted a prototype gun that utilizes the same method of viewing that a lobster does to see what’s ahead in murky waters. The LEXID (Lobster Eye X-ray Imaging Device) functions by “radiating objects with tiny amounts of X-ray energy,” subsequently allowing its user to see behind steel, wood or concrete. According to David Throckmorton, a project manager in Homeland Security’s Science and Technology division, the resulting images aren’t exactly drool-worthy, but they do allow you to make out a stash of weapons or a crouching enemy. Unfortunately, completion is too far out to estimate a price, but its creators are hoping to one day make it cheap enough for exterminators and contractors to purchase and use. ‘Course, we could imagine middle schoolers getting into all sorts of trouble if one of these floated into the locker room.

Those who found the Zapper a tad too childish for their sadistic imaginations should probably adore Nyko’s alternative, as the Perfect Shot Gun doesn’t dumb down its appearance whatsoever. Rather, this Wiimote attachment resembles an actual pistol in most every way — save for the plastic shell, vivid accents and its inability to fire actual bullets — and it even features a pass-through port for the nunchuck / classic controller. Regrettably, it seems that this one won’t be shipping in time for the holidays (unless Amazon’s fibbing), but don’t let that slow you down from paying your $12.99 and counting down the days till it hits your doorstep.

Nah, it’s not like tagging an intruder with shades of neon green, yellow and orange will do much to disable him / her, but it would probably make ‘em think twice before going any further. ‘Course, we’re sure one could think of other uses for an automated paintball gun, and for those creative enough to agree, Team Cynergy has put together a videotaped how-to guide for building a laser-based motion detector and connecting it to your gun. We’ll save the technicalities for those who dare to check out the near-10 minute clip posted after the break, but the long and short of it involves a Parralax BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller, a red laser pointer, a servo and a good bit of tinkering (among other things). Besides, this is a lot less dangerous than that motion-activated BB rifle and laser-guided turret you built earlier this year, so why not flex some DIY muscle and give this endeavor a go?

Barrel-mounted cameras aren’t exactly revolutionary, but it’s not everyday that you see the boys in blue sporting one on their sidearm. Nevertheless, Orange County’s sheriff’s emergency service team and the Newburgh Police Department will reportedly “be the first groups to test the pistol cam,” which would record audio and video whenever the weapon was removed from its holster. According to Chief Eric Paolilli, it’ll be implemented if trials prove that there are no safety / functionality issues associated with it. As it stands, the state has set aside $35,000 in order for the device to be adequately tested, and if everything goes smoothly, Newburgh officers could soon be rocking the camera (and creating footage for COPS) as part of their standard equipment.

The opening shot of the robot rebellion this isn’t, but it’s still a reminder of how robots are slowly creeping into situations where humans and their fleshy bodies can’t go. A five hour stand-off that began with a man pointing his gun at a neighbor in a mobile home park in North Fort Myers, Florida was ended when the suspect shot a bomb disposal robot sent in by police to video the man. After the encounter — the man shot out the video camera’s lens — police moved in to “subdue” the man, although it’s not clear whether they shot back. The suspect is now in hospital and is being evaluated for mental health problems: apparently he hadn’t been taken his medication, and residents say his wife had just left him. The state of the robot is probably something along the lines of “broken.”
