DoCoMo’s separated phone hands-on and video from CEATEC

October 1st, 2008 by

We got all down and dirty with DoCoMo and Fujitsu’s prototype “Separated phone” today at CEATEC, and we can confirm that the device does, in fact do what they say it does. As reported earlier, the device uses Bluetooth to communicate between the phone’s two magnetized halves, enabling configurations in everything from standard clamshell to gaming landscape formats. Perhaps the most compelling configuration is one that allows the phone to be held to the ear while one accesses data on the another half, complete with neck cramps. The touchscreen, Symbian S60-based UI was easy enough to use (albeit in Japanese) and features a hearty media playback element, but we were unable to squeeze any commitment to a launch date, price, or probability of seeing the unit on the market. That all said, the demo units were very much operational as you can see for yourself in the video after the break.

Squeezebox Boom review

September 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Remember Kerbango? In the early months of the decade, 3Com’s foray (via acquisition) into the then-nonexistent world of tabletop internet radios crashed and burned before it was ever even launched, a classic example of an arguably visionary product launching well, well ahead of its time. Over seven years have passed since the Kerbango Radio’s untimely death, but for whatever reason, the concept really hasn’t re-emerged on a grand scale. On the surface, it seems like a no-brainer: everyone has an alarm clock, many have bedside or kitchen radios, WiFi has since emerged as a ubiquitous cloud of high-speed data, and more people are listening to streamed audio than ever before — yet the market for these devices is still treated like a niche. What gives?

Zivio Boom hands (and ears) on

September 16th, 2008 by

At first glance, the Zivio Boom seems like a novel approach to the Bluetooth headset problem, but as we experienced, it’s actually a little less pleasure and a touch more pain. The design and packaging of the product are highly stylized and sufficiently handsome to be sure, but once you get down to the meat, this peripheral leaves quite a bit to be desired. In our tests, not only was the sound quality of the earpiece far below the standards you’d expect from a product in this price range ($129.95), but the general design of the Boom is lacking in many regards. Firstly, the ear-clip is held onto the device by a magnet — and not a very powerful one at that — which renders the component largely useless. The headset does an okay job of staying on with the varying size bud attachments, but it still felt a bit heavy without hanging it off of something. All of that might be surmountable were it not for the abysmal sound quality we experienced. The thin, telescoping microphone seemed like it would do a better job at picking up audio than a standard Bluetooth headset, but it didn’t hold up next to Jawbone’s offerings, and the fragility of the metal makes it seem like we’re only a day or two away from cashing in the warranty. The reception quality wasn’t any better — we literally had to ask a friend of ours if they were speaking through a towel. Both on the receiving and transmitting ends, we found the Boom to be a disappointment. There’s no question that this is a good looking device — just not one that we can really recommend.

iPod touch 2G unboxing, hands-on, and first impressions

September 11th, 2008 by

We’ll tell you that when we first got a chance to handle Apple’s latest generation of the iPod touch on Tuesday, our gadget-nerd alarms went clanging like there was a really, really bad fire somewhere. The improvements the company has made in design aren’t remarkable, but they are entirely welcome. The new housing is smooth, incredibly thin, and feels like a solid metal brick in your hands. The built-in speaker is a nice addition, as are those volume controls (finally!) — the screen is incredibly bright (on par with the iPhone 3G), though it also looks like it got the 3G’s new color temperature. On the software side, 2.1 is definitely feeling smoother and slicker than previous versions, the Nike+ inclusion is huge if you’re a runner, and the implementation is well integrated — overall, we’re leaning towards a thumbs-up on those bug fixes too. Unfortunately, we couldn’t seem to get the Genius function working on the device (anyone else having this issue?), though that may be more of a server-side conflict than something funky with the player, as we were getting errors in iTunes when trying to flip the switch. We’ll be blowing this out with a full review, but for now you can enjoy the succulent pics in the gallery below!

iPod nano 4G unboxing, hands-on, and first impressions

September 11th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPod_Nano_4G_Unboxing_Hands_On_and_First_Impressions_2′; We had a chance to paw this beauty on Tuesday at the Apple event, but finally getting home and spending some quality time with the device has given us a far deeper impression of just what the folks in Cupertino have done. So far our impressions are favorable: physically, the nano redesign is a move in the right direction for the company, leaving that awkward previous generation nano on the cutting room floor, and falling much more in line with Apple’s current design language. The player feels solid and compact — maybe a bit too tiny for our big paws — though build quality is on par with the 1st generation iPhone. You can tell a lot of careful rethinking went into this, and there’s not an edge out of place. We’re going to be doing a full review of the device and its new software, but for now feast your eyes on the gallery below.

GamePark Wiz hands-on from Engadget Spanish

September 2nd, 2008 by

We’ve already seen early pictures and heard a release date for GamePark’s newest handheld — the Wiz — but now Engadget Spanish has gotten their hands and eyes all over the device, and they’ve brought back photos to prove it. As you can see from the pics, the portable console will be offered with more than one style of casing, and apparently the company is setting up some type of App Store-like service which will allow users to purchase and download software, as well as share their own homebrew apps. According to our team, it looks like that October 8th street date will be pushed back till sometime in November due to issues with the right control pad (which GamePark is working to correct). Until then, you can just feast your eyes on the gallery below.

We’re not saying the Sammy entry blows away HTC’s — not by a long shot — but it’s a solid competitor that makes Windows Mobile looks shockingly passable for the year 2008. Read on!

Gateway P-7811FX gaming laptop unboxing and hands-on

August 13th, 2008 by

Gateway P-7811FX

Right on schedule, Gateway has set free its P-7811 FX gaming laptop, and we got our hands on one right before you can get your own. Our test unit shipped with the aforementioned Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.26GHz with a 3MB L2 cache, Windows Vista Home 64-bit, Intel PM45 Express Chipset, NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS with 512MB of GDDR3 discrete video memory, a 17-inch WXGA screen, 200GB 7200 SATA HDD, 4GB DDR3 800MHz RAM, HDMI, 9-cell battery, and 1.3MP webcam. We’re pretty pleased with the performance of the machine, although dialing up Crysis to its max settings made it choke a bit. We’re still not sold on the computer’s stylings, but in a dark room of gaming goodness, who’s paying attention to gaudy lights and overly-shiny carbon anyway, right? Peep the hands-on pics and a brief video of Crysis in action after the break. And yes, we know we suck at the game.

So is it new enough, advanced enough, and badass enough to do the duty while still being sufficiently incremental to satisfy even the most easily-agitated suit? Engadget Mobile reveals all in the full review, so click on!

Voodoo’s Envy 133 gets handled by Maximum PC

The folks over at Maximum PC have gotten themselves a chance to go face-to-face (and tongue-to-laptop) with Voodoo’s newest show-off — the Envy 133 — and they’ve shared with the rest of the world. There’s not much to say based on these pictures, save that they clearly were stoked to be getting this close to the sexed-up excuse for maxing out a credit card. If you hit the read link, you’ll catch a slew of pictures, some size comparisons with a MacBook Pro, and first impressions of what Voodoo’s instant-on OS looks and feels like. D-Link DSM-210 unboxing, hands-on, and mini-review

July 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

When we first heard D-Link was sending its new DSM-210 Internet Photo Frame our way, we’ll admit we had some pretty Star Trekkian visions of what it might entail. The device — which is a 10-inch, 800 x 480 LCD display with built-in WiFi and ethernet connectivity — promises to upgrade the familiar static nature of its ilk with a handful of networking enhancements. The frame adds Facebook, RSS, and various photo site (Flickr, Picasa) integration, then couples it with weather reports and the standard slideshow options (using the 1GB onboard storage or SD / MMC / Memory Stick slot). What should be a killer combo — a frame that actually provides some interactive features — is unfortunately hampered by its clunky UI and painful navigation via its dimestore micro-remote. D-Link does provide a nice landing page to set up your various accounts, though there’s a cap on how many pictures can be in each stream, and it won’t let you add two of the same subscription services on the device (say, if you and your spouse have separate Flickr accounts). The weather application is a nice touch, but that fact that it displays advertisements is a bit of a detractor — do we really need to be bombarded with Dr. Pepper ads interspersed with photos from our peace-keeping missions abroad? All in all, it’s not a bad device, but for the $249.99 price tag, you may be better off buying a cheapo netbook for a little bit more cash and leaving it open on a table somewhere.

Blackberry Bold hands-on

June 25th, 2008 by

Blackberry Bold hands-on

We had a chance to play with Research In Motion’s upcoming BlackBerry Bold handset tonight, and we came away happily impressed. To start things off, the keyboard felt easy enough to use, at least easier than the 8830 we’re often forced to use for work email. Gone are the sharp protrusions, replaced with a nice flat surface upon which to click.

Of note was the Bold’s user interface. Menus are clean and easy to read (despite some strange icon choices, see below), and response time is about as quick as one could hope, especially compared to other phones out there that seem to struggle with their operating systems.

HTC Touch Diamond hands-on, up close and personal this time

June 7th, 2008 by

The good folks at HTC left this little gem (pun totally intended) on our doorstep today, but as cool as it sounds to have one of the world’s great Windows Mobile torchbearers just drop off its hottest new handset to us like it’s an extra large pepperoni and mushroom, it’s a bittersweet gift at best. Why? The Touch Diamond lacks both HSDPA 850 / 1900 and GSM 850 in its current incarnation, leaving it to cling to what 1900MHz EDGE towers it can find. That makes it an untouchable product for all but the hardest-core North Americans who are willing to throw both high-speed data and maximum signal coverage out of the window just to be able to put the pinnacle of WinMo 6.1 engineering in their pocket. Are you in that one percent? Or perhaps even better, are you in Europe where the usable 3G flows like running water? Click through to Engadget Mobile’s hands-on to get the lowdown!

Samsung Instinct hands-on

June 7th, 2008 by

We hate gratuitous iPhone comparisons as much as the next guy, but let’s be straight with each other here: Sprint has its sights squarely focused on Cupertino’s darling with the Instinct. From beginning to end, the carrier has pulled no punches about the model’s target audience and its competition. Make no mistake, though, the Instinct is no iPhone ripoff or clone — it’s distinctly its own beast that just happens to share a form factor and a few common UI paradigms, and depending on your perspective and the specific feature you happen to be using, that can be a good or a bad thing. So is it better than a chocolate cupcake with sprinkles? Head on over to Engadget Mobile for the full rundown!

Gateway P-172X FX gaming laptop unboxing and hands-on

April 9th, 2008 by

If you’re a gamer on the move (and we think that you are), you’re probably eyeing some monster laptops. If you’re looking to bro-down with one in the near future, take a moment to familiarize yourself with Gateway’s latest 17-incher, the P-172X FX. The updated rig (a new riff on the similarly-themed P-171) features a Core 2 Duo CPU (the 2.4GHz T8300), 1920 x 1200 resolution, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800M GTS GPU (with 512MB of GDDR3 RAM), a DVD-R/RW/RAM optical drive, and a nasty mess of ports and card slots. We got to take the dude out for a spin, and performance was definitely up to par (translation: it plays Crysis), though the design left a little something to be desired, like… style. A cheaper, 2.0GHz version with half the drive space, lower screen resolution, and a gig less RAM is available, though it maintains the GPU and graphics memory. The P-172X FX is available right now for $1,999, and kid brother P-172S FX will run you $1,399. Check the gallery below for a full and proper look.

Hands-on with the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition

April 1st, 2008 by

Having trouble telling the difference between this and a garden-variety N810? Yeah, don’t worry about it — that’s okay, and it’s actually by design. We had an opportunity to tool around with Nokia’s just-announced N810 WiMAX Edition today, and it stays very true to the original N810’s formula, substituting a darker case and keyboard (both of which look very handsome, by the way), and physically, that’s about it. The real magic happens deep within this thing’s innards, where the addition of a WiMAX radio keeps things speedy when WiFi hotspots are out of reach and Bluetooth tethering to a 3G phone is too much of a hassle. The software necessary to support XOHM activation isn’t complete yet, but Nokia’s reps tell us that the process of signing up for WiMAX service will be seamless and entirely doable from the N810 itself — no pesky phone calls or visits to a store necessary. They likened it to purchasing hotel internet service; there’ll probably be hourly, daily, or continuous subscriptions available, making it possible to only shell out XOHM coin when the situation demands it. It works just like any other data connection on the device, too, so getting your wide-area broadband on is pretty much as painless as it could possibly be. Check out some shots (including a side-by-side with the original N810) in the gallery!
