Samsung’s SpinPoint N2 drive gets a glossy black case

August 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Samsung was pretty boastful about its high-capacity SpinPoint N2 1.8-inch drives when they launched back in June of 2007, and now the company’s decided to show them off a bit — check out this hot new credit-card-sized external model in glossy black with a flip-out USB connector. Specs are the same as before — 4200rpm, 27MB/s read and 23MB/s read — but sadly the most important spec is that it’s China-only for now and pricing is in the stratosphere, with the 120GB version clocking in at RMB1999 ($293). Yeah, we’ll stick with saving our pennies for an SSD.

Hacked PlayStation 3 reportedly runs Blu-ray games from HDD

August 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

This one isn’t quite as dodgy as they come, but the very notable limitations really keep this from being the whiz-bang hack that it appears to be on the surface. Hacker StreetskaterFU had no trouble getting confirmation from others that his method of running Blu-ray games from the PlayStation 3’s hard drive was indeed legitimate, but it is only confirmed to work with select “older titles” including Warhawk, MotorStorm and Call of Duty 3. To make matters worse, instructions are sketchy at best, but at least there’s a video of the process working after the break. Let us know how things go should you give this a whirl.

Aspire One modding continues: swapping SSD for capacious HDD

August 16th, 2008 by

Oh sure, you’re pretty 1337 if you can say you’ve got an SSD within your laptop, but if you’ve a need to store more than, say, 8GB of files, a bit more room may be desired. tnkgrl’s Aspire One mods began earlier this week with the addition of Bluetooth and extra RAM, and today she’s showing the world how to swap the built-in SSD with a 1.8-inch 60GB PATA drive. As expected, this one’s remarkably easy to complete once you’ve torn the thing open, but she also explains how to best put it all back together once you’re done. But you’re not, because she’ll be producing a how-to for adding internal 3G in the coming days / weeks.

Xbox 360’s new Dashboard game install demoed on video

August 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve already seen walkthroughs of the new Xbox 360 Dashboard, but this is the first look we’ve had at a feature we’re sort of stoked on: the ability to install games to the internal hard drive from DVD. From the looks of things, it’s an extremely simple process to get the data moved over (despite the long waits for multiple GB files being copied), though it looks like you’ll still need the DVD on hand to actually play the game. Don’t believe a word we’re saying? Take a look at the video after the break and see for yourself!

Memorex pumps out new line of Essential TravelDrives

August 4th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s hard to say if we’ve ever laid eyes on a family of portable hard drives with less vigor and pizazz, but Memorex isn’t kidding around when it calls these things “essential.” Boasting nothing more than the bare necessities, the new line of TravelDrives arrives with 2.5-inch HDDs that pack 160GB, 250GB or 320GB of space. You’ll find a USB 2.0 port and a flashing LED to keep you from dozing off, and there’s even a few color options to choose from in case you’re partial to Spring Blossom, Tropic Green, Caribbean Blue or Cool Silver. At least they start at just $89.99, right?

Hitachi jacks perpendicular recording density to 610Gb / square inch

August 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hitachi sure does love some perpendicular recording, and in between making trippy videos about the tech, it seems like it’s busy improving it — the company just announced that it’s increased the max storage density of magnetic recording to 610Gb per square inch. That’s far denser than current techniques, and it could lead to a 2.5x increase in capacity for hard drives — and what’s more, Hitachi says it shows that hard drive capacities have the ability to increase at a rate of 40 percent annually for the foreseeable future. Looks like the Tera Era might actually be here, eh?

Brando’s SATA HDD Multimedia Dock includes video-out, media player

July 30th, 2008 by

Brando’s SATA HDD Stage Rack doesn’t stay the same for very long, as it seems a new iteration keeps popping up every month or so. The latest (and greatest, might we add) is the SATA HDD Multimedia Dock, which enables users to slap in any ole 2.5- / 3.5-inch SATA hard drive and access it via USB. That’s not all, though. This one also provides an SD card slot, S-Video / composite / component outputs and a bundled remote — what for, you ask? So you can play back MPEG1/2/4, XviD and DivX (among others) files, of course. This takes multifaceted to an entirely different platform, huh?

Freecom rolls out Mobile Drive XXS, new “world’s smallest” 2.5-incher

July 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While it seems inevitable that external 2.5-inch hard drives can only get so small, right now manufacturers look to be intent on doing their best to shave off every last excess millimeter to lay claim to the elusive title of world’s smallest. That designation now appears to have fallen on Freecom’s new Mobile Drive XXS which, according to the company, is not only 27% smaller than its nearest competitor but, at just 155 grams, the lightest drive of its kind around as well. You’ll still get the usual choices of 160GB, 250GB, or 320GB sizes though, along with the requisite bus-powered connectivity, and a handy form-fitting rubber sleeve to ensure the thing stays where you want it. Look for this one to hit the UK any day now for £45, £60, or £80 (or $90 to $160), depending on the capacity.

SimpleTech hops on eco-friendly bandwagon with [re]drive HDD

July 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not that we haven’t seen bamboo-based gizmos before, but there’s something about SimpleTech’s [re]drive that just screams upscale. This elegant, smooth looking external HDD was crafted to be easy on the eyes and Mother Earth alike, with the outfit utilizing “renewable, naturally grown bamboo and recyclable aluminum” along with an Energy Star power adapter and eco-friendly packaging. You’ll also find a USB 2.0 jack, automatic power up / down and 500GB of internal storage space. Not too shabby for an estimated $150.

Eee hard drive, optical drive, and 3G card continue to reduce meaning of Eee brand

July 24th, 2008 by

Okay, so there’s clearly a tube that dispenses marshmallows to the ASUS marketing department whenever it comes up with another product to slap the Eee brand on, because this just getting silly. In addition to the countless Eee laptops, Eee Box desktop, Eee monitor, Eee televisions, and other Eee-branded crap, we’re hearing the company is working on a line of accessories, including an external hard drive, optical drive, and WWAN card. None of this is official quite yet, but knowing ASUS, it’ll be out in 30 different varieties by the end of the month.

Western Digital intros 2.5-inch 10,000RPM VelociRaptor HDD

July 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Western Digital has been flaunting its VelociRaptor for some time now, but the drive you’ve been slamming into towers is now available for low-power, high-performance blade server applications. The 2.5-inch, 10,000RPM enterprise SATA drive (WD3000BLFS) is specially designed to fit snugly within 1U and 2U rack servers, and aside from consuming 35% less power than the previous Raptor drive, this one is available with up to 300GB of capacity. You’ll also find 16MB of cache and a 1.4 million mean time before failure rating, though you won’t be able to procure one until later this month for an undisclosed price.

LG reveals XD1 family of portable hard drives

July 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Although Western Digital seems to have the portable hard drive sector all wrapped up, LG’s looking to snag a bit of that market share by introducing a new line of stylish alternatives. Each member of the XD1 family possesses a 2.5-inch HDD with a SATA II interface and a USB 2.0 port, and just in case black isn’t your bag, you can expect a red wine colored version as well. For now, we’ll have to live without a price or release date, but you can look forward to units arriving in 120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB sizes sometime in the future.

Digital Foci’s Photo Safe II takes the load off of your flash card

July 18th, 2008 by

Digital Foci didn’t go out of its way to drastically redesign the original Photo Safe, but we ’spose that’s alright in the grand scheme of things. Essentially, the Photo Safe II picks up where its predecessor left off by including a multicard reader (now with 100% more MS Duo and miniSD support) which automatically transfers photos from your flash card onto the built-in 80GB / 160GB hard drive. The integrated display tells you at a glance how much space is remaining and how much battery life is left, though it won’t show your stored photos in slideshow (or any other) fashion. A touch steep at $139 (80GB) / $189 (160GB), but that’s convenience for you.

Fujitsu keeps HandyDrive portable HDD line alive with 500GB edition

July 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Father Time isn’t slowing things down anytime soon, so it’s good to see that Fujitsu is doing its best to keep up. Merely two months after taking the HandyDrive to 400GB, the firm has introduced an all new, totally marvelous 500GB iteration. Featuring the “world’s highest capacity 2.5-inch external hard disk drive (likely the MHZ2 BT),” this bus-powered unit hasn’t changed a bit in design, but it will hold a half-terabyte of information (in case you missed it the first go ’round). Grab it later this month in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for €229 ($364).

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11: 1.5TB of love

July 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

You know, we’re not actually certain we want to trust 1.5TB of our precious precious NES ROMS invaluable work data to a single drive, but that doesn’t mean Seagate’s latest Barracuda isn’t droolworthy regardless. The jump from 1TB to 1.5TB is the “largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives,” according to Seagate, and the perpendicular-recording drives should begin shipping in August. There are also a pair of Momentus 2.5-inch 500GB notebook drives coming in Q4 in 5400 and 7200RPM speeds, but like big brother, pricing is unavailable — we’ve got a hunch you might want to start saving those pennies, though.

[Thanks, Dave]

Hitachi introduces second-gen 1TB Deskstar 7K1000.B hard drive

July 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Remember the day you drooled all over your keyboard when Hitachi introduced a 1TB internal hard drive? Yeah, like a year and a half ago? The outfit’s most recent HDD announcement isn’t likely to have nearly the same effect, but those who skipped the first-gen version in order to get a more refined product the second go ’round will surely be delighted. Today marks the debut of the 1TB Deskstar 7K1000.B, which goes down as “the world’s most energy-efficient 7,200RPM one-terabyte hard drive.” Said drive features a new three-disk design which improves idle power consumption up to 43% over its 1TB predecessor, but unfortunately, there’s no telling how long you’ll have to wait to actually buy this currently unpriced overlord of storage.

Unitek’s SATA HDD Dock throws in multicard reader, one-touch backup

June 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ve managed to blink over the past few weeks, you may have missed it. Missed what, you ask? The war between no name HDD racks, that’s what. After numerous evolutions of the HDD Stage Rack managed to capture the hearts of at least a few storage junkies out there, we’ve seen a barrage of competitors surface over at Brando. The latest is Unitek’s SATA HDD Multi-Function Dock with One Touch Backup, which — to be totally frank — does a phenomenal job of explaining itself. For those a touch slow on the uptake, this unit enables any internal 2.5- / 3.5-inch SATA drive to be accessed externally, and furthermore, it packs a couple of USB 2.0 ports and supports a whole slew of memory cards. You could grab this one now for $53, but then again, you never know what will leapfrog it next week.

Samsung trumpets mass production of Spinpoint MP2 / M6 / F1 HDDs

June 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Thanks to an overzealous e-tailer, we already knew that Sammy’s Spinpoint M6 was ready to be ordered en masse, but Samsung has finally put out some official verbiage to substantiate the obvious. The outfit’s 500GB Spinpoint M6 ($299) and 250GB Spinpoint MP2 ($199) are both shipping as we speak, and that curious sound you hear over there is your current laptop begging for a storage upgrade. On a slightly related note, the company is also announcing that its 7200RPM Spinpoint F1 RAID-class (F1R; pictured) 3.5-inch SATA drive has hit mass production, meaning that you can bulk up your enterprise storage solution 1TB at a time for $299 each.

WD’s My Book Mirror Edition simplifies redundant storage

June 18th, 2008 by

That sound you hear is Western Digital grabbing hold of an udder and not letting go as it continues to milk the My Book brand for every penny it’s worth. Today, the outfit is introducing a new line of dual-drive units that come ready to mirror whatever information you shove on ‘em. The RAID-based Mirror Edition drives tout USB 2.0 connectivity, RAID 1/0 support, a fanless design, user serviceable enclosure, a capacity gauge and intelligent drive management features including automatic power-up and Safe Shutdown. The external HDDs arrive in RAID 1 (mirrored) mode — which creates automatic duplicates of your files in case one drive fails — but RAID 0 (striped) can be configured during setup. Stack your My Book collection even higher right now for $289.99 (1TB) / $549.99 (2TB).
