Nokia’s N79 and US spec’d N85 now mucho official

August 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re not going to re-hash the details of Nokia’s N79 and N85 yet again. After all, we just went through it less than 24-hours ago. We will tell you that both the N79 (tri-band GSM, 900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA) and N85 (quad-band GSM with 900/1900/2100 or 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA) will hit Europe in October for €350 and €450, respectively, pre-tax and pre-carrier subsidies. The N85 could also be Stateside sometime soon after given those frequencies and prior FCC approval. Oh, and pictures, lots of pretty pictures.

Sony Ericsson depletes stash of product names, announces slim T700 phone

August 7th, 2008 by

Yippee, it’s T700 day at Sony. First they launched the DSC-T700 digicam, now the T700 cellphone. The T700 candybar is mostly phone though with a smattering of camera just for kicks. We’re talking quad-band GSM and UMTS/HSDPA 2100 with 4.5-hours of 3G talk and a 3.2 megapixel camera with cell-id geotagging and photo light. It measures just 10-mm thin with Bluetooth A2DP, stereo speakers, 2-inch TFT LCD, and 512MB of Memory Stick Micro (M2) storage tossed in the box. Available in “select markets” in Q4 for what’s expected to be a middling price tag.

T-Mobile 3G is live in Vegas, baby

August 6th, 2008 by

T-mobile Vegas

That’s right, kids, T-Mobile launched 3G data in Vegas this morning. The 1700MHz AWS 3G network went live for phones that can hit the UMTS 3G data stream, and if your phone is one of those, you may want to look for the pretty little icon and start doing some Intertron browsing. T-Mobile still expects to hit another 20 markets this year (along with some new handsets), so if you’re not in Sin City, be patient — 3G is coming.

Samsung intros two new Q1 Ultra UMPCs: one with Vista Business, one with HSDPA

July 28th, 2008 by

The next-generation Q1 Ultra may be due next year, but Sammy’s trying to squeeze every bit of life it can out of the current iteration with two new flavors. Announced today, the Q1U-CMXP boasts an integrated HSDPA 3G cellular modem, while the Q1UP-V is a Q1 Ultra Premium featuring Vista Business. As for the former, it includes just about every connectivity option you could wish for: 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Ethernet and a WWAN modem that connects to the AT&T Broadband Connect network; outside of the one new feature, however, the specifications are the same as the standard Q1 Ultra XP model that was launched in May of 2007. Both newcomers (if you can call ‘em that) are available as we speak for $1,499 and $1,449 in order of mention.

Gigabyte gets official with 8.9-inch M912V swivel screen netbook

July 5th, 2008 by

It has taken long enough, but Gigabyte finally saw fit to make official its intriguing M912V. If you’ll recall, this critter popped up and caught eyes at Computex, as it’s essentially a netbook with a swivel screen — think Tablet PC, but miniature. Specs wise, you’re looking at an 8.9-inch WXGA (1,280 x 768) LED-backlit panel, Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 2.5-inch HDD (120/160/250GB), 1.3-megapixel camera, twin 1.5-watt speakers, 1GB of RAM and your choice of Windows XP, Vista or Linux. Furthermore, you’ll find Bluetooth, WiFi, an ExpressCard slot, a wide of array of ports and even an option for HSDPA expansion. It should be noted that there’s no internal optical drive (nor a price or release date just yet), but at least Gigabyte’s offering up a netbook with some inkling of innovation, right?

Eee PC getting GGG in September

July 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Seems that just about anyone insider of Asus is authorized to discuss the Eee PC roadmap judging by the whirlwind of information we always get prior to an official launch. Case in point: an unnamed “company representative” says that a 3G version of the Eee PC will be launching as early as September in Europe. An alternative to the WiMax version already annouced and demonstrated on Sprint’s Xohm. The prices for the presumed HSDPA/HSUPA enabled mini-laptops will of course vary depending upon contract. Can’t wait? No worries, why not roll your own? Should be a snap now that the Eee is riding that bigger 9-inch chassis.

Samsung L870 S60 slider features Apple’s Safari browser

May 28th, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Safari_browser_ships_on_Samsung_L870_cellphone’; Yup, you read that right. We’re not talking about just any Webkit-based browser, Samsung’s long-rumored L870 slider features Apple’s Webkit-based, Mobile Safari browser. A first outside of the iPhone. The 13.5-mm thin phone pumps Symbian v9.3 and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 at its core with a 3 megapixel camera, 2.4-inch QVGA display, FM radio, Stereo Bluetooth, and microSD expansion. Unfortunately, this pup is tri-band GSM with single-band UMTS/HSDPA 3.6Mbps support so it’ll be heading to Europe around the August time frame.

Update: Full press release available after the break.

3G iPhone to support 42Mbps Evolved HSPA data?

May 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/3G_iPhone_to_support_42Mbps_Evolved_HSPA_data’; Get this. Australian site ChannelNews claims that a “senior executive of Telstra” is the latest 3G iPhone bean spiller. They quote the exec as saying the following:

“We know what is coming we have seen the new device and it will be available on our network as soon as it is launched in the USA. By Christmas this phone will be capable of 42Mbps which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world.”

Interesting. We know that Telstra’s Next G HSDPA network has been capable of 14.4Mbps since 2007. At GSMA Mobile World Congress, they even committed to 21Mbps before the end of the year and 42Mbps using HSPA+ (aka, Evolved HSPA, HSPA Evolution) technology in 2009… not Christmas of 2008. Hard to say if this is just industry blow-harding or actual insider info. June 9th: T-minus 17 days and counting.

[Thanks, Paul S.]

T-Mobile clears everything up: 3G rollout (with data) is on in NYC

May 5th, 2008 by

Great news, T-Mobile USA fans — the roller coaster ride is finally over. After we thought T-Mobile’s 3G network was but moments away from launching, we soon found that data may be left out. Oddly enough, a few reports hailing from the Big Apple claimed that data actually was included. At long last, the carrier is coming clean and announcing its official 3G rollout in the States. Unfortunately, the UMTS / HSDPA network is initially launching in New York City alone, but the good news is that data will be included and the operator expects the high-speed data network to “be available in cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services” by the year’s end. Yeah, it’s safe to celebrate now, we promise it’s not a(nother) false alarm. Full release posted after the jump.

Sony Ericsson launches ho hum Z780 and G502 cellphones as profits plunge

April 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

In a move meant to, uh, distract investors from its announced 48% profit downturn (compared to Q1 of the previous year), Sony Ericsson just announced a pair of mid-range handsets. The Z780 clamshell — now official — is the global sister to the announced Z770 for Europe. As such, she comes packing UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radios. While it comes loaded with Google Maps for Mobile and aGPS navigation, you won’t get much use from it on that itty bitty 128 x 160 pixel display of unknown dimensions. Hell, that bezel chews up an equivalent amount of real estate. The G502 candybar also features Maps but lacks aGPS. No worries for US Americans though as it’s likely to stay put in Europe with UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 radios. Both will feature M2 memory expansion, Bluetooth, and 2 megapixel cameras when they launch in “selected markets” come Q2. Sorry Sony Ericsson, but we’re not seeing a lot here to distract investors (or consumers) for very long. Xperia X1 please?

Nokia outs HSDPA 5320 and 5220 XpressMusic candybars, wake us when it’s the Tube

April 22nd, 2008 by

While we patiently wait for Nokia’s current, “no major new products” fiscal quarter to expire, we’ll have to trudge through releases like these 5320 (left) and 5220 (your other left) candybars. As members of the XpressMusic range the devices themselves are fine. Unfortunately, fine isn’t going to win back that 1% lost market share. The 3G HSDPA 5320 (€220 / $351) features dedicated music and N-Gage gaming keys, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, up to 24-hours of play time, up to 8GB of expandable storage, and a “Say and Play” voice controlled playlist; speak the name of the artist or song you want and the phone will play it. The (€160 / $255) 5220 removes the HSDPA but adds a lanyard… hoorah!? Expect both to land in Europe sometime in Q3 2008.

ECS’ Atom-based G10IL gets more attractive by the minute

March 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Upon initial inspection, we had a hunch the ECS G10IL would emerge as one of the most desirable of the low-cost lappies. Now that ECS has filled us all in on a few more pertinent details, we’re feeling all the more sure of that assertion. According to new specifications loosed on the outfit’s own website, we can look forward to a Diamondville, er, Atom CPU, Windows XP or Linux under the hood, a single RAM slot (up to 2GB), an HDD or SSD, 1.3-megapixel webcam, 4-in-1 multicard reader, a 8.2- / 10.2-inch glossy display and a 4- / 6-cell battery for good measure. Oh, and if you were wondering if Bluetooth and WiFi would tag along with the built-in HSDPA / HSUPA, the answer’s yes (at least on the big fellow). So, does the G10IL have your attention now, or what?

February 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Check it data fans, AT&T just announced a pair of new HSUPA LaptopConnect cards from Option. The GT Ultra goes type II PCMCIA while the GT Ultra Express is, you guessed it, destined for ExpressCard34 slots. Both cards are tri-band UMTS/HSPA 850/900/2100MHz and quad-band GPRS/EDGE capable for what AT&T speeds of about 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps on the way down or 500Kbps to 800Kbps back up the tubes. Those bands should get your suit connected in some 140 countries spanning the US, Europe, Japan and Korea. The cards are Mac and PC compatible and will set you back <s>$50</s> 0$ (for a limited time starting tomorrow) plus a two year contract of at least $60 per month. HP to integrate Qualcomm’s Gobi EV-DO / HSPA chip into laptops

February 11th, 2008 by

It’s not all just cellphones at Mobile World Congress — HP and Qualcomm have just announced plans to ship laptops with Qualcomm’s Gobi dual-3G chipset that supports both EV-DO and HSPA. That means you won’t be locked into a carrier when you buy a laptop with an integrated WWAN modem — and hardcore road warriors with multiple subscriptions will even be able to switch on the fly to the network with better coverage. HP says Gobi (officially the MDM1000 chip, but that’s no fun) will be available on a range of laptops from ultraportables to high-performance models later this year, but there’s no word on pricing just yet — let’s hope it falls into the “might as well” range, eh?

Novatel rolls out Ovation MC930D HSDPA / HSUPA USB modem

February 11th, 2008 by

Those looking for a little HSDPA / HSUPA action with minimal protuberance from their laptop now have a new option to consider from Novatel, which has just announced its new Ovation MC930D USB modem. Measuring a scant 70 x 25 x 12 mm, this one promises to give you the usual peak download and upload speeds of 7.2 Mbps and 2.1 Mbps, respectively, along with worldwide connectivity on any HSDPA / HSUPA network supporting the 2100 MHz band. If you’re struggling to stay connected, you can also bust out the included Dual USB Y-cable to boost the power if you’re in a weak signal area. No word on a price just yet, but that little detail shouldn’t be a secret much longer, as the modem’s set to hit retailers sometime this month.

LG’s KT610 S60 smartphone with GPS: sounds good, looks like something

February 10th, 2008 by

While Sony Ericsson has the tongues wagging over at the Mobile World Congress, LG has quietly loosed its LG-KT610 without any photos. We know it’s a 2.4-inch VGA flip with QWERTY based on Symbian v9.2 and S60 3rd edition feature pack 1. That’s a damn good start before adding 3.6Mbps HSDPA and GPS navigation. As to the looks it’s said to be “sleek” and “uniquely designed.” Thanks LG, but that isn’t quit enough information to form a mental picture now is it? We’ll slap in some pics as soon as they roll in.

AT&T’s 2008 plans include 80 new cities with 3G, HSUPA network

February 6th, 2008 by

Kind of makes those New Years resolutions of yours seem a bit silly now, but AT&T has some high hopes for 2008. While it mulls its own 700MHz options and leaves the C block to the likes of Verizon, the company plans to build out its 3G network into 80 more cities, which boosts the number to 350 “leading” markets in the US, a rollout AT&T has been sluggish to compete with Verizon and Sprint on. AT&T also pledges to complete its HSUPA network by the middle of the year for speedier uploads. AT&T’s not giving many specifics on its future network plans, just that existing infrastructure improvements pave the way for HSPA+ and LTE in the “years to come.” Let’s hope those years come fast, these HD downloads we keep hearing about are liable to set a few cell towers on fire by year’s end.

Polymer Vision’s Readius e-ink phone coming mid-2008 to Italy

February 3rd, 2008 by

It seemed obvious back in mid-December of last year that Polymer Vision wasn’t going to nail its timetable for production versions of the 3G-equipped, e-ink wonder known as the Readius. Now word is that the company will have a commercial version of the phone / e-book reader available sometime in mid-2008 in Italy via Telecom Italia — provided that everything goes according to its diabolical plans. If you’ll recall, the device features a foldable, grayscale, 5-inch QVGA display, and boasts a slew of features, including HSDPA, a 400MHz ARM CPU, and a battery life up to “six times longer” than current mobile phones. We’ll admit we’re intrigued, but don’t make us wait too long over here, okay?
