We thought we had a handle on what the next-gen Prius was going to look like when we spotted those renders back in July, and Toyota’s just confirmed that some press shots that leaked out last week are the real deal, not just photos of a super-high-tech sneaker. The company isn’t providing any more information until the official debut at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but we’re hoping we’ll get some more details about those plug-in fleet tests, as well as those solar plans. Check a few more shots at links below.

An eco-friendly future might be right around the corner, and on Peugeot’s HYmotion3 Compressor concept scooter you can take that corner with just the right balance of safety and power. At 29bhp, this new prototype gets 118 MPG thanks to its hybrid powertrain, and is quite stable with two wheels in front and one behind. In the event that you do lose control, you’ll be protected by a BMW C1-esque roll cage. That’s three techs borrowed from predecessors, plus the added benefit of three-wheel drive. Most advanced hybrid scooter yet? Maybe, but it’s just a concept, so if you’re looking to stand out like a sore but oh-so-energy-efficient thumb on the road, you’re outta luck for the time being.

We’ve been hearing about vehicle-to-grid (V2G) for quite a while, and now a team at the University of Michigan is conducting an extensive study on the technology as part of a national sustainable energy solution. While current electric plants are good at generating power, they often fall short when it comes to storage — which can be a problem when there’s a power surge or when demand increases. V2G will let hybrid-electric owners sell the power their car generates to the electrical power grid whenever the car is not in use. The research team envisions a time when millions of hybrid vehicle owners will come together to create one large battery, allowing us all to play a small part in building our nation’s energy independence. And sure, this all sounds good in theory. But wouldn’t that mean relying on the neighbors to provide a key piece of the nation’s infrastructure? Have you met the neighbors? Doesn’t that seem a little… iffy?

What else can we say? Chrysler’s new electric vehicles that were introduced yesterday just got a lot more real thanks to a stable of videos showing ‘em off. To be honest, we’re not too jazzed about the whisper quiet Chrysler minivan or the otherwise plain Jeep Wrangler, but that Dodge EV — mmm, now that’s a fine piece of engineering. Tap the read link and mash play if you’re thirsty for more.

Seeing that General Motors left a gaping hole of opportunity for other automakers to produce a new EV by 2010 that isn’t uglier than sin itself, it’s no real shock to see Chrysler champing at the bit. Just this week, the company has introduced a trio of advanced electric-drive vehicle prototypes (simply coined Chrysler EV, Jeep EV and Dodge EV for now), one of which will mysteriously surface in 2010 for consumers in North America. Feel free to hit the read link for the entire hope-filled press release and the gallery of images, but if we’ve learned anything of late about those succulent concept shots, it’s to not believe them (at all).

The 2011 Chevy Volt has been officially unveiled this morning and we are pleased to note that the new pictures are much more flattering than the “glamour shots” released a week or so ago. The interior of the Volt features a driver-configurable LCD instrument display, 7-inch touch screen information display (for climate and “infotainment” control), Bluetooth, USB and optional GPS. Of course, what makes this vehicle noteworthy is the sheer plug-in-hybridness of it all: the car runs entirely off of its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. For trips up to 40 miles, the battery’s initial charge will suffice (granted you remembered to plug it in overnight). After the battery is spent, the gasoline generator provides electricity to the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery for a range of “several hundred additional miles,” according to GM. Hit the read links for far more info. and check out a drool-worthy interior photo and video walkthrough after the break.

If you’ve been hoping to get your hands around the wheel of one of those eco-friendly plug-in Priuses (Priuii?), maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and finally move to the UK… just like you’ve been telling all your friends you’re going to do one of these days. According to a report, Toyota is gearing up for the first trials of the ultra-low-MPG car starting tomorrow at an event in London’s Hyde Park. An invite mailed to select members of the media (British media, we assume) states: “the purpose of our UK trial is to evaluate not only vehicle performance, but also the electrical infrastructure required, as well as driver behaviour and expectations. The results will play a key role in preparing for the future commercialisation of Plug-in Hybrid technology.” So if you’ve ever wanted to watch one of these planet-huggers race silently around a British landmark, here’s your chance.

It’s official public debut may still only be coming next week, but it looks like GM has finally decided to give up on the carefully-chosen teaser shots and let the hotly-anticipated Volt out in the open for all the internet to see. No doubt to the dismay of some, the would-be next Prius sure looks a good deal different than the far more angular prototype we’ve all come to know over the past little while, although we can’t say we’re exactly surprised given GM’s mass-market hopes for the car. Still, it is quite the milestone for the auto industry, and hopefully only the start of things to come. Be sure to hit up Autoblog for a gallery full of more pics of your favorite GM execs — and the Volt, too.

As astutely pointed out by our friends at The Red Ferret Journal, it’s a bit odd to see hybrid car makers cutting down on noise while electric car makers are looking to add it back in, but Toyota’s silence isn’t of the kill-a-biker sort. Toyota has worked internal noise-canceling into its new Crown hybrid, with microphones to pick up engine and road noise, and then speakers to blast out antiphase versions of those noises at head height. Toyota claims it can cut noise by around 5 to 8dB.

Toyota hasn’t made a huge secret of its plans to develop and sell a plug-in version of the Prius, and it the wheels are turning a little faster than we’ve heard — fleet testing of plug-in models has been pushed up to early 2009, with the goal of having “several hundred” on the road by the end of the year. Still no timetable for actual retail sales, so you’ll have to be a wheelman for a government or commercial fleet to get your hands on one — good thing all those modders have the rest of us covered.

We’ve seen GM’s carefully managed Volt PR campaign, but that hasn’t stopped our friends at AutoBlogGreen from combing the net for a better look, resulting in these apparent snaps of the center console and the production exterior rolling along the set of Transformers 2. The shiny, rounded all white center console with touch sensitive interface? You’re probably thinking what we’re thinking. At least the exterior shot — which shows off a “Volt” badge on the A-pillar — is a bit more clear. Of course, this might just be a movie-only iteration and any number of things could change before those batteries get out of Malibus and into proper rolling stock… but we’ll just sit back and keep our fingers crossed, at least until 2010.

Okay, so maybe it’s not a huge deal if your Civic Hybrid only hums around town, but when behind the wheel of say, a Lightning GT, you’re going to want that bad boy to make some serious racket. Lotus is taking a somewhat fresh concept and kicking out an idea of its own in order to give some grunt back to battery-filled whips. Currently, the auto maker is utilizing a Prius (what, couldn’t net an Elise loaner?) in order to show off its “Safe and Sound” technology (video after the break), which integrates a speaker setup just behind the front bumper in order to alert pedestrians just before they’re mangled by an ultra-green, eco-friendly vehicle. Wonder if we’ll ever be able to purchase new exhaust tones from our in-dash navigation system — ‘69 Shelby GT500, anyone?

Google.org, the search kingpin’s philanthropic wing, has just added another notch to its eco-friendly belt with a recent (and sizable) investment in Aptera Motors — makers of that absurdly futuristic gas-sipper we’ve been following. Along with ActaCell (an electric car battery maker), Aptera received a $2.75 million infusion via Google.org’s RechargeIT investment program. Hopefully, some of the cash will be put to use bringing Aptera’s Typ-1 vehicle to market, where its $30,000 estimated price tag and outrageous 230+ MPG fuel economy will be a welcome relief from rising fuel costs and concerns… and our lack of a fresh ride.

‘Tis a shame we North Americans, Europeans, Australians, et al. won’t be seeing the Elantra LPI Hybrid in 2009, but those in South Korea have a reason to celebrate. Hyundai is gearing up to launch the company’s first LPG-electric hybrid vehicle next July, which also happens to be the planet’s first hybrid vehicle to be “powered by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and adopt advanced Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) batteries.” Said automobile will pack a 1.6-liter Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) Gamma engine, a 15kW electric motor and a continuously variable transmission, and while the outfit isn’t releasing hard mileage numbers just yet, the car should prove to be around 50% cheaper to operate than a gas-only Elantra (pictured). C’mon Hyundai, we know you’ve got plans to take this thing worldwide — just let it out of the bag already.

We’ve been hearing rumors about a partially solar-powered Prius, but Car and Driver’s got some info on the 2010 model scheduled to make an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in January, and it doesn’t appear that sunlight plays a part quite yet. The popular hybrid gets a more angular shape, but it still basically looks like a shoe — which isn’t to say it’s not an improvement over that earlier rendering, which looked like a terrifically ugly shoe. Dimensions are only slightly bigger, as Toyota wants people to “recognize the Prius as a Prius” but the engine gets a small boost to 1.6 liters while fuel economy is said to be improved over the current model’s 48 / 45 EPA numbers. There’s also a plug-in version in the works, but the battery tech to make that happen is still under development, and supplies will be limited to the “hundreds of units rather than thousands.” All this is partially speculation on C/D’s part, so we’re still holding out hope for solar panels, but we’ve got a feeling that’s not going to happen for a while yet.

Update: Our bad, looks like this is apparently just Car and Driver’s illustration of what they think it COULD look like. Thanks, Dave.

We’re still a bit unconvinced about this whole “using our own energy to induce motion” thing, but if you got restless leg or some other siren call to the bicycle, the Lithium Vivi RX-10S seems the way to go. Panasonic is launching the bike in Japan this August, and stuffed in some fancy hybrid car-style regenerative braking to set it apart from the pack (though Sanyo does have something similar). There are four levels of assistance electric motor assistance, which means you’re probably going to end up peddling now and then, but the bike’s range with regenerative braking to power a secondary battery is almost 78 miles, compared to 56 miles without it. You’ll obviously benefit more if you have a lot of hills and “stop and go” type stuff on your commute, but that’s certainly nothing to scoff at.

According to Nikkei, Toyota’s apparently going to be equipping future high-end Priuses with Kyocera-built roof-mounted solar panels. Somewhat counterintuitively, the sun’s rays won’t be used to power the car itself, but will instead run the AC. It also sounds like your next solar-assisted Prius won’t be around for a while, as the panels aren’t designed in yet, nor will they be until early next year when Toyota starts work on revamping the line.

You know how we love plug-in hybrids around these parts, particularly if they’re actually going to get built — crazy, we know. Now it looks like Volkswagen is going to get into the game, with a “Twin Drive” Golf powered by a 122 horsepower diesel engine and 82 horsies of electric motor. The car should debut around 2010, and VW plans on spending $769 million on the project, helped along by a $23.5 million program put in place by the German government to help along such development. The car, which uses the electric motor for primary power, supplemented by the diesel motor and regenerative braking for extra juice, should be able to squeeze about 31 miles out of its Sanyo-developed lithium-ion batteries in all-electric mode.

If you’re in the market for a fuel efficient car, but you’ve been holding out for something a little more advanced than the Prius — your dreams may have just been answered. Honda announced today that it would begin producing limited quantities of its FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles for sale in the US and Japan over the next few years. According to the automaker, it plans to offer around 200 of the zero-emission cars in the next three years, with a few dozen models expected on the road this year leased at around $600 a month. Said John Mendel, a senior vice president at Honda, “It’s an especially significant day for American Honda as we plant firm footsteps toward the mainstreaming of fuel cell cars.” Now all they have to do is get more than 3 fueling stations out there and we’ll be all set.

Toyota continues to lead the silent race to efficient cars with plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid in 2010 that will use lithium-ion batteries. Meanwhile, Toyota has been working with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co to develop batteries that will outperform lithium-ion batteries for its plans to introduce hybrid versions of every single car in its lineup between 2020 and 2029. If that seems too far away, the next generation Prius, due next year, will use NiMH batteries. Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe told reporters in Tokyo that it’s time to move past oil and get serious about electric power. “Our view is that oil production will peak in the near future. We need to develop power train(s) for alternative energy sources.”
