Tesla’s in-car charging computer gets touched on video

July 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Your retinas have been treated to plenty of external shots of Tesla’s Roadster, but have you ever stopped to wonder what kind of excitement sat just southwest of the steering wheel? CNET’s UK branch managed to get their camcorder within a Roadster parked on display over in Britain, and what they found was a rather robust interface that enables owners to get all sorts of involved with how and when the car charges. The representative did note that typical navigation functions were controlled via the JVC head unit, but the small panel just under the gauges enables motorists to control a number of aspects in relation to charging. There’s even a guide that explains which choices are cheaper and more beneficial for the long-term life of the battery. Have a look at the video in the read link.

OCZ’s Neural Impulse Actuator gets reviewed, mice everywhere safe for now

July 21st, 2008 by

We tried to take OCZ’s Neural Impulse Actuator seriously, we really did. But unable to suppress those recurring images of Geordi La Forge, we simply couldn’t help ourselves from having a laugh at this thing’s expense. Nevertheless, the way-more-solemn dudes and dudettes over at HotHardware managed to give this brain-computer interface a fair shake, and overall, it was pretty impressed. Still, the bottom line is this: “the NIA is a very unique input device and possibly the first true brain-computer interface to hit the retail market,” but it’s not “a replacement for traditional input methods.” Granted, critics did point out that it would supplement current devices quite well, but only after “slogging through” hours upon hours of training. The hardcore among us may be willing to put in the time necessary to really get a lot out of this; for everyone else, just continue to point and laugh while masking your ignorance.

Teclast M26 user interface looks a bit familiar

July 7th, 2008 by

Teclast’s M26 seemed vaguely more interesting than the dozens of other garbage, status-quo portable media devices that get pumped out of Chinese factories on a weekly basis — and now we need not spend any more time wondering just where they got their design, um, inspiration. At least Meizu’s M8 sexed it up a little — this take is just a bit depressing.

Microsoft developing ad-funded, senior PCs in UK

April 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The geriatric set most definitely has plenty of cellphones catered to them, but finding a computer that’s equally simple to operate isn’t nearly as easy. According to a BBC report stemming from a Digital Inclusion conference in London, Microsoft UK is aiming to develop a “senior PC” which will feature a simplistic interface and come tweaked to handle tasks such as managing prescriptions and photos. The outfit is teaming up with charities Age Concern and Help the Aged, and it’s just one of the many projects meant to tackle the issue of “digitally excluding” millions of citizens. Additionally, Microsoft is working up an “ad-funded PC” that would come preloaded with a step-by-step guide to get online, remain safe, perform “simple computer tasks” and, of course, fire up Doom. Just kidding about that last part… maybe.

Samsung skips the touchscreen, patents gesture-based phone interface

April 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Samsung’s been getting pretty creative with cell cameras lately — the Instinct lets you pan around web pages by tracking movement with the camera, for example — but the company’s latest patent application, for a gesture-based phone interface, might be a little less practical. The idea is to use the phone’s camera to track your hand movements, which, from the drawings, should have you looking insane on the subway in no time. Of course, we’ve all been guilty of waving at and even talking to our devices when they’re acting up, so maybe a little feedback wouldn’t be a bad thing — there’s one gesture we’d definitely like to see programmed in there.

Meizu’s M8 gets more UI tweaks for its music player

March 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Now, we know the official story on the CeBIT Meizu shutdown was related to MP3 codec licensing, and not the M8’s iPhone-like UI. Still, it does seem strangely fortuitous that more pictures of the phone’s interface have just appeared that seem to showcase a move away from Apple’s familiar look. The Chinese site CNMO has new shots of the device’s music player, which now appears to incorporate song info, EQ display, lyrics, and volume / tracking controls all on one screen. The pictures also show a couple of different music browsing options, both in landscape and portrait mode. Is this a signal that the company is putting some distance between the M8 and the iPhone? Only time will tell.

Meizu M8 interface gets tweaked once again. A few pixels to the left, please?

March 16th, 2008 by

While it appears that Meizu’s infringement shutdown at CeBIT was for unlicensed MP3 usage, and not at all to do with the eerie resemblance to a certain iPhone, the company still seems eager to prove to the world it is brewing something unique with the M8 mini One. CEO Jack Wong posted a bunch of new shots to the Meizu forums with small interface tweaks that inch the OS a bit away from its iPhone roots — but certainly not far.

Minority Report-like interface gets demoed at CeBIT

March 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Minority_Report_like_interface_gets_demoed_at_CeBIT’; It’s far from the first Minority Report-like interface to make the rounds, but that doesn’t seem to have prevented the massive setup pictured above from drawing a crowd at CeBIT, which one attendee thankfully captured on video. As you can see for yourself after the break, the rig lets you do all the usual moving, flipping and resizing, without the need for pesky gloves or silly headgear. Needless to say, there’s no indication as to where this particular bit of technology is headed next, but it seems safe to assume that it’ll become a fixture of trade shows for years to come.

Samsung’s new TouchWiz UI gets previewed on video

February 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ve seen our shots of Samsung’s Armani redo, the F480, you might have noticed it’s running a new OS. The UI — called TouchWiz — is based off of the company’s Croix interface (which apparently was rushed out to compete with the iPhone), and will be used on all of the upcoming finger-touch phones from the manufacturer. The cats over at Phone Scoop had a chance to go one-on-one with TouchWiz at Mobile World Congress, and they’ve put together a pretty informative video that shows off the UI doing its thing. The inclusion of a new widget system, expanded menu options, and overall speed bump make this OS a notable step up from Samsung’s previous offering. Take a look at the video after the break to see the system getting all funky-fresh.

[Thanks, Martijn]

Elliptic Labs shows off touchless interface for 3D navigation

February 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve seen (though not felt, for obvious reasons) a few touchless interfaces before, but the latest development coming from Elliptic Labs is a real treat. Dubbed a “touchless human / machine user interface for 3D navigation,” the firm has somehow figured out how to allow mere mortals to manipulate on-screen images without requiring any sort of funky gloves to be worn or a microchip to be installed in your fingertip. Sadly, little is said about the actual technology behind the magic, but don’t worry, the video waiting after the jump should provide plenty of satisfaction.

Georgia Tech researchers demonstrate blowable user interface

November 15th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Although a team from Kent State already whipped up a method for turning one’s PC on / off with a simple puff of air, two gurus at Georgia Tech have created a full-blown (ahem) breath-controlled user interface. The low-cost, localized blowable UI — cleverly dubbed BLUI — apparently utilizes a built-in microphone along with a C++ application that computes the blowing inputs. Once installed, users can puff on either side of the screen in order to scroll left / right, icons can be selected depending on the fierceness of the puff and games could integrate the technology in to add another level of interactivity. Notably, the duo behind the creation is already investigating how to avoid false positives (i.e. inputs from nature when outside on a blustery day), and while we’re not sure how close this stuff is to becoming commercially available (if at all), you can take a look at a videoed demonstration just beyond the break. [Warning: PDF read link]

Pioneer shows off a 3D gesture controller for cars at the Tokyo Motor Show

October 30th, 2007 by

Apparently this rig was at CEATEC and we missed it, but Pioneer is showing off a triple-screened 3D gesture controller for cars at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it looks pretty amazing. The left screen shows GPS, while the far right screen shows potential overlays — selecting an icon from the right screen allows you to “grab” it from the middle holographic section and put it on the left GPS screen. It sounds crazy and potentially distracting, but it’s got that KITT vibe we love so much, and it’s interesting to see gesture and 3D come together like this. Check the read link for lots more pics of this thing in action.

Meizu’s MiniOne M8 GUI showcased further, still devoid of originality

October 19th, 2007 by

Filed under:

If you had even a sliver of faith left in Meizu that it would change its copycatting ways and turn its heart to creativity, you’re probably feeling quite foolish right about now. In a recent posting made to showcase even more interface shots of the MiniOne M8, we got a glimpse at the not at all familiar music interface, more insight on the calling screens and a few more looks (shown after the jump) at how it’ll handle messaging. Needless to say, we can just swear we’ve seen a similar GUI before, but apparently, playing the ignorance card makes it easier to swallow. Oh, and the actual phone now sports a “new edge” with a somewhat grayish motif — enthralling, we know.

Treo 500v sports a revamped Windows Mobile interface

October 16th, 2007 by

Filed under:

For all of you fervent Treo fans chomping at the bit to get your hands on the 500v, here’s an interesting piece of information which may stir “things” deep inside your mind and body. Apparently, the Windows Mobile-equipped smartphones will be touting a UI that’s a pretty big step away from Microsoft’s staid and standard operations. According to a slow, yet detailed video we’ve seen, the new interface will be pulled together using a completely revamped “start menu,” (similar to the UI which Samsung is employing on its SGH-i620) which gives you much faster access to applications and settings, and has a completely new look. Menus and application icons also appear to be a departure from what we’ve seen in other WM devices, giving the interface a wholly unique aspect. Check the video after the break and see for yourself.

September 26th, 2007 by

Filed under:

For those scouting a simple way to broadcast content from your PC onto a TV sans wires (and regardless of format), Addlogix is demanding your attention. The firm’s InternetVue 2020 Wireless PC2TV Receiver enables users to “mirror what is on their computer screen on projectors or TVs,” and it also features composite / component inputs and 802.11b/g compatibility. Reportedly, any content (read: pictures, movie clips, presentations, live streaming sporting events, etc.) can be passed on from your machine to your television without worrying over formats or codecs, and it’s said to be shipping out as we speak for $249.
