We hear you loud and clear Roku — now go prove to someone other than Netflix that your box is worth toying with. At the recent Streaming Media West conference, Roku CEO Anthony Wood reiterated details that we already knew: it really, really wants to work with companies other than Netflix. Said Wood, “We’re opening up the platform to anyone who wants to put their video service on this box,” and he continued by stating that “we’re going to release the software developer kit, so anyone can publish any channel, and users can access web content on their TVs.” Of course, both Netflix and Roku knew from the get-go that the relationship would involve other partners, though it remains to be seen who’s willing to call for seconds at Roku’s shindig.

Earlier this year, we saw Sharp dish out more internet-ready LCD HDTVs than we could shake a stick at. Now, the outfit is catering to those clamoring for a GX5 model larger than 52-inches. The expansive 65-inch AQUOS LC-65GX5 steps in with a 1080p panel, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/m2 brightness, ARSS speaker system, 176-degree viewing angles, built-in analog / digital terrestrial tuners and a whole mess of ports including HDMI (x3), optical audio, i.LINK, composite, S-Video and DVI. As expected, the set is DLNA-compliant, and there’s a built-in IR port for anyone that still cares. Expect it next month (at least in Japan) for ¥680,000 ($6,450).

What’s this? A little standardization in the TV realm? Announced today at IBC2008, Microsoft has launched its Protected Broadcast Driver Architecture (PBDA), a new worldwide platform that was made possible by the recent release of Windows Media Center TV Pack. In short, this system enables the “PC-TV hardware ecosystem to integrate virtually any free or premium TV service into Windows Media Center,” which keeps content guardians ultra-stoked while giving consumers more choice when it comes to TV tuning. Essentially, PBDA gives OEMs and tuner-makers the ability to develop and ship wares for WMC “regardless of geographic location or television standard.” The initiative is being backed by some serious players, too — Hauppauge, AVerMedia, NEC, and NXP just to name a few — and a couple have already shipped PBDA-based solutions overseas. Hit the read link for more… if you dare.

We’re not sure who let Yahoo! into Intel’s party in San Francisco, but the two sure are getting along great. Much to the chagrin of Mark Cuban, these two actually believe that there’s a future in internet TV, particularly if you force it down people’s throats. Intel spent the bulk of its time talking up the Media Processor CE 3100 (formerly known as Canmore), which would theoretically be installed within HDTVs and enable users to access internet-based content without the need for an additional set-top-box (’course, the STB is still optional). That’s where Yahoo! comes in — it’s hoping that its Widget Channel will encourage users to utilize its services when watching re-runs or other lackluster material in order to get news, weather and other related information right on the living room set. Not that this is a totally new concept, but these two surely have the power to push it one step further. Lots more information and pictures in the links below.
Update: It’s official… surprise!

As the release date for ZeeVee’s ZvBox draws near (we’re hearing July 31st), the company is out and about in an attempt to drum up demand as the run-up to its launch progresses. During CONNECTIONS 2008, ZeeVee was in attendance with a ZvBox on display, and aside from snapping a few telling photographs, the folks over at eHomeUpgrade were also able to capture a couple videos to give you an early feel of its capabilities (and limitations). We don’t have to tell you where the goods are, but if you’re new here, that read link down there is a good place to start.

Shortly after hearing TiVo’s top dog speak of a “whole home model” to reduce the amount of STBs required for entertaining individuals in various rooms, along comes Time Warner Cable’s chief executive talking up some innovation of its own. We’ll be frank — we’re not entirely sure what Glenn Britt is getting at here, but through a broken series of quotes, we’re led to believe that the carrier is prepping some “equipment” that will easily bring internet content to TVs. Not like there isn’t a perfect solution for this quandary already, but we digress. Specifically, he mentions a ” new wireless cable modem that will allow you to network everything in your house,” which is about as broad / vague as you can get. Nevertheless, it’s enough to keep us watchin’, though we can’t say our expectations are extraordinarily high. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Just in case you weren’t satisfied with the plethora of media streamers out there already, startup ZeeVee is hoping to catch your eye with its admittedly unique offering. The June-bound ZvBox ($499) plugs into one’s computer (VGA) and sends on-screen content to every TV in the house over existing coaxial cabling. Put simply, the unit enables users to view any kind of internet media right on their television with no subscription fees or wireless dropouts. Aside from bringing internet video over, users can also access any other computer application (web browser, built-in DVD player, etc.) right from their set. In order to handle said tasks, the box comes bundled with a wireless ZvRemote / Zviewer, but those comfortable with managing their own desktop won’t be bothered with any fancy interfaces. Suffice to say, those looking to easily pipe their Media PC recordings to the family TV will certainly find reason to take notice. Head on the past the break for a few more details.

Well, what do you know? TiVo’s delivering as promised with this one, as Desktop Plus 2.6 is indeed going live in March — just like we were told back in January (and nary a week after TiVo promised YouTube access later this year). Truth be told, there’s not a whole lot here that you didn’t already get a taste of in our hands-on at CES, but here’s the skinny. As of today, TiVo users can grab hold of the latest version of Desktop (Windows only, we’re afraid) and “enjoy a broad range of web entertainment available directly from their TV.” More specifically, these customers “can choose web videos downloaded on the home PC using web browsers, RSS video clients such as iTunes podcasts, or other video download software to automatically copy to their TiVo DVR’s Now Playing List alongside recorded broadcast and cable TV shows.” In case you couldn’t tell, Desktop Plus 2.6 can be downloaded today for a one-time fee of $24.95, but consider that waived if you’re upgrading from an earlier version. Click on through for the full release.

Don’t look now, but it seems that three rivals in the UK have found enough love in their hearts (or promise for profitability) to team up for the good of the consumer. Reportedly, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 will be joining hands in order to deliver an on-demand service that hopes to “bring together hundreds of hours of television programs in one place” — a collaborative effort once known as Project Kangaroo. Of course, the grand idea still has to be approved by the BBC Trust and other broadcasters’ boards, and an official name for the service still has to be thought up, but at least the wheels are apparently turning, right? We’re hearing that content from the trio will be available for “free download, streaming, rental and purchase via the internet, with expansion onto other platforms planned,” and just in case you were curious, the iPlayer, ITV’s catch-up service and Channel 4oD will indeed coexist with the new aggregator. Hang tight UK, the to-be-named service is set to go live sometime next year should things pan out nicely.

Just as we expected, Microsoft is getting official with its Windows Media Center Internet TV feature, which is set to go live in beta fashion tomorrow morning. According to Microsoft, US-based users of Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate will soon be able to download a simple update that will enable them to “enjoy a range of television and video content on their PCs and TV sets [with a Media Center Extender of some sort] without a TV tuner in their PC.” The streaming content will all be ad-supported “by an advertising platform provided by YuMe,” which means that you’ll be getting it gratis. The programming reportedly “comes from MSN Video,” and just over 100 hours of it will be available when the beta begins. To whet your appetite, a few notables that will be available are “full episodes of TV shows such as ‘Arrested Development,’ full-length music concerts by artists such as Chris Cornell, Snoop Dogg, Elton John, Pink, John Mayer and the Pussycat Dolls, movie trailers, news segments from MSNBC, and sports clips from FOX Sports.”

Just in case Linksys and D-Link’s introductions weren’t enough to satisfy, Microsoft is now announcing yet another partner in its refreshed Extenders for Windows Media Center effort. Beginning in “early 2008,” owners of HP’s current 42- and 47-inch MediaSmart LCD HDTVs will be able to utilize all of the features of the Media Center Extender platform sans any additional hardware. According to Microsoft, users will simply download a software update for their set, after which they’ll be able to kick back and enjoy a little Windows Media Center Internet TV while basking in the glory that is added functionality.
