4GB iPod nano 4Gs show up on Best Buy’s Canadian site

September 21st, 2008 by

Look, we know there’s some kind of good explanation for these things existing, but Apple, don’t you think it’s a little weird how they keep cropping up in stores even though you never, ever mentioned them? That’s right, those 4GB iPod nano 4Gs we saw at Dutch retailers last week have now made their way onto Best Buy’s Canadian website. Over in North America, the players will apparently sell for $139, and will be available tomorrow… or so they say.

[Thanks, Robert]

Apple iPod touch 2G and nano 4G: The Engadget Review

September 19th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_iPod_touch_2G_and_nano_4G_The_Engadget_Review’; It’s been just over a week since we ran a smash-and-grab at Apple’s unveiling of its newest entries to the iPod family, the nano 4G and touch 2G. The devices, both set along an evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) path have certainly been nipped, tucked, and updated — but we wanted to know if they’d been improved at all. For the nano, we’ve seen some iteration of the same device for years now, leaving questions as to how much further you can take a low-end music player, while the touch is another story completely; a handheld which treads that ever-thinning line between entertainment device and micro-computer. Do either of these products hit their marks, or has Apple overextended itself in its pursuit of market saturation? Keep reading to find out.

Mysterious new 4GB iPod nano 4Gs begin appearing on store shelves

September 17th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Mystery_4GB_iPod_nano_4Gs_show_up_at_stores’; Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world — a 4GB model. As there’s been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the ‘Let’s Rock’ event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer’s site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) — though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple’s part. Regardless, they appear to be the real thing, and they appear to be on store shelves right now (in some countries, at least). If you’re looking for the ultimate Apple collector’s item, this may be just the thing. Check out the gallery below for lots of looks at the mystery nano.

Update: The UK’s Pocket-lint got hold of an Apple spokesperson who told them Apple “made a limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets, but this is not one of our main configurations.” Mystery solved, we guess — but that “limited number” bit has us thinking this was still some kind of mistake.

Keepin’ it real fake, CXL: Cottage MP3 player apes iPod nano 4G a year in advance

September 12th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Who_s_copying_who_Miao_copies_iPod_nano_4G_a_year_in_advance’; Why, this is downright preposterous! How dare the copyright-ignoring, astonishingly uncreative minds of those at Miao copy Apple’s latest iPod nano design a full year in advance? They should be implausibly embarrassed by churning out a so-called Cottage MP3 player in 2007, all while the brains at Cupertino sat and pondered how to make its tiny little PMP that much better. This, people, is an outrage. An outrage!

iPod nano 4G unboxing, hands-on, and first impressions

September 11th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPod_Nano_4G_Unboxing_Hands_On_and_First_Impressions_2′; We had a chance to paw this beauty on Tuesday at the Apple event, but finally getting home and spending some quality time with the device has given us a far deeper impression of just what the folks in Cupertino have done. So far our impressions are favorable: physically, the nano redesign is a move in the right direction for the company, leaving that awkward previous generation nano on the cutting room floor, and falling much more in line with Apple’s current design language. The player feels solid and compact — maybe a bit too tiny for our big paws — though build quality is on par with the 1st generation iPhone. You can tell a lot of careful rethinking went into this, and there’s not an edge out of place. We’re going to be doing a full review of the device and its new software, but for now feast your eyes on the gallery below.

Official: iPod nano reaches 4G, looks tall for its age

September 9th, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Official_iPod_nano_reaches_4G_looks_tall_for_its_age’;

Well well. Can’t say we’re surprised to be telling you about the new 4th generation iPod nano. As we heard, 9 colors, bigger $149 8GB and $199 16GB capacity, and wider 2-inch display under the control of an accelerometer for automatic switching between portrait and landscape modes like those early Canon PowerShots and uh, oh right, the iPod touch and iPhone. Looks just like the spy shots eh? Steve calls it the thinnest iPod ever with new Genius playlist, shake to shuffle feature, and 24-hour battery for music or 4-hours for video. In stores by the weekend, available immediately on-line. A few more pics after the break and the gallery below.

Yet another iPod nano 4G case leaks out

September 8th, 2008 by

Yep, there’s another 4G iPod Nano case, this time apparently accompanied by official-looking PR — we think it’s probably safe to assume we’ll be seeing this bad boy make its debut tomorrow. We’re also hearing that current-gen iPod touches are being pulled from store shelves with instructions not to sell them, anyone else hear or see anything similar?

Supposed iPod nano 4G really unboxed

September 6th, 2008 by

There you have it, more supposed iPod nano 4G love, unboxed and wearing a distinctive iPod nano 2G lime-colored coat. Must be cold in the house that fruit built from all these leaks.

Update: As noted in the comments, that 2G coloring is matched with a an old-style squeeze connector for the dock making this leak, at least, highly suspect.

iPod nano 4G leaked in actual, factual, really-real spy photo

September 5th, 2008 by

Look, you know the drill here. This may be the painstaking result of some CAD-school-dropout’s nights home alone, or the latest in cheapo knock-offs from the Far East. You may be looking at a Photoshop spackled together from newspaper clippings, puppy dog tears, and Steve Jobs’ fever-dreams. Or, this could be a really crappy, actual photo of the iPod nano 4G in its packaging. It sure looks enough like what we’ve been seeing lately to be any / all of the above. Regardless, we’ll know the truth real, real soon.

Yet another iPod nano 4G render? Sure, why not

September 4th, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Yet_another_iPod_nano_4G_render_Sure_why_not’; Hey, what’s one more leaked OEM/ODM image of the iPod nano 4G between friends. While usually we’d be highly suspect of an image like this from Alibaba.com (peddlers of the Mac G6), the stars have certainly aligned around the next-generation iPod nano form factor show beneath the “Screen Guard for iPod Nano 4th Gen.” Besides, it’s the first clean render we’ve seen from below. Five more days and we’ll know for sure.

[Thanks, Chris W.]

Hands-on with Hama’s iPod nano 4G case at IFA

September 1st, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPod_nano_4G_case_found_matches_the_Kevin_Rose_nano’; Our spicy, siesta loving friends over at Engadget Spanish just nabbed a hands-on with Hama’s iPod nano 4G case on the floor of IFA. The tip came in anonymously about an hour ago and sure enough, there it is, buried in a mountain of iPod accessories and sharing the same smooth arc of the Kevin Rose nano — as it will from henceforth be known. Hit the read link for all the pics, or check a couple more after the break.

Supposed 4th gen iPod nano case designs slip out

August 24th, 2008 by

Sure, magic man and all-around seer Kevin Rose delivered the “news” that a refreshed iPod nano is coming in the form that slimmed up, tapered in, longish tube of a device — but you might be looking for harder evidence. We’ve just come across two case-related designs supposedly destined for Apple’s next PMP, but both raise as many questions as they answer. Chinese accessory-maker Beelan apparently has a silicon sleeve ready to drop ship to a location of your choice via Alibaba, and iDealsChina is showing off renders of the 4th gen nano and another case from “some unknown Canadian company.” Unfortunately, neither design can really be verified, and as they’ve just appeared on the heels of last night’s Rose rumor, the timing seems a touch suspect. We’re wondering what the Engadget hive-mind thinks — any meat on these bones?
