New iPod nano and touch revealed by case manufacturers?

August 26th, 2008 by

Man, Apple’s lockdown on product leaks just isn’t as tight as it used to be — remember when having new iPod designs leaked by case manufacturers seemed totally unthinkable? Yeah, those times are over — check out these silicone cases for a fourth-gen iPod nano and second-gen iPod touch that just appeared on Alibaba. We’re not totally sold on the touch cases, but the nanos look way more legit, especially since we’ve seen some others matching this general look before; while nano KIRFs in this form factor aren’t uncommon, we’d say it’s pretty unlikely that anyone’s making several different types of silicone cases for them. We’re not calling this anywhere near 100 percent yet, but let’s just say we’re hoping Apple’s press photographers can make the new nano look a whole lot better than our pal Mr. Blurrycam by the time September 9th rolls around. More case photos after the break.

[Thanks, Samm]

Apple introducing new iPods on September 9th?

August 25th, 2008 by

There’s been a lot of iPod chatter in the air lately and now MacRumors and Ars Technica say that we’ll be seeing El Steve boom-boom some new gear on September 9th. No specifics on what’s in store, but new nanos are obviously on the table, as is that rumored subscription service and possibly a new iPod touch at a lower price. Anything you guys hoping for?

Kevin Rose unearths redesigned iPod nano, digs for more?

August 23rd, 2008 by

Kevin Rose of Digg origins claims to have the scoop on the latest iPod nano. Mind you, this is the same Kevin Rose who notoriously claimed that a generation one iPhone would launch in both CDMA and GSM versions with a pair of batteries and slide-out keyboard. Uh hem. This time however, he backs up his claims with a picture of that skinnier, longer, and curvier nano pictured above — credible because it just happens to be consistent with other rumors we’ve seen floating around and certainly makes sense for an Apple obsessed with tapering edges and video playback. Kev also claims that the iPod lineup will undergo price cuts to avoid the market cannibalization assumed by the lower $199 iPhone 3G purchase price. The iPod touch, which currently starts at $299 for 8GB, will see some slight cosmetic changes as well as a new 2.1 firmware update (which will obviously make its way to the iPhone). Tagging along with the iPod refresh is a new iTunes 8.0 which, according to Rose’s sources, deserves the full point upgrade based on all the new features and functionality it brings. All this, “in the next 2-3 weeks.”

He then adds that OS X 10.5.6 is rumored to include Blu-ray support which could point to future Blu-ray options in Apple’s lineup of Macs — oh, and ponies, lots of ponies. Listen to the man say it in his own words in the video after the break.

[Thanks, Matt and Alexis F.]

Apple’s next-gen iPods just around the corner, full of rainbows?

August 21st, 2008 by

Sure, you could dismiss this round of iPod rumors — so carefully culled by the fine folks at 9 to 5 Mac and AppleInsider — as baseless speculation, but we’ll have none of your dowdy skepticism. We’re talking about rainbows here, people. AppleInsider claims that retailers are seeing current iPod models being switched to “discontinued” in inventory systems, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says to expect iPod refreshes across the board, including a slightly redesigned $200 iPod touch, and meanwhile 9 to 5 Mac has it from an unnamed source that the new iPod nanos will have enhanced features, double the storage and rainbow color schemes. It’s almost like somebody in Cupertino is reading our mind! We’ll know for sure when new iPods arrive mid-September filled to the brim with “Run’s House” episodes and bedecked in rainbow-hued gummy bears. It’s going to rock.

Screenshots of iPhone Nike+ running app emerge, we’re out of breath already

August 19th, 2008 by

It has taken its sweet, sweet time in arriving, but it seems the iPhone Nike+ running application is just… about… here. A slew of new screenshots of the application have emerged, and while there are no juicy tidbits to accompany ‘em (release date, cost, etc.), we all know how many lines of text a single snapshot is worth. Hang tight runners, the app you’ve been waiting (and waiting) for can’t be far from the finish line now.

Apple admits to iPod nano smoking and sparks, will replace faulty devices

August 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_admits_to_iPod_nano_smoking_and_sparks_will_replace’; It’s only taken a number of years and some seriously ruined pants — but Apple has finally come clean on the flammable nature of the first-generation iPod nano, and is now offering to replace the faulty devices. After reports today that two more of the media players had lit up without warning in Japan, the company issued a statement admitting that the nanos do — in fact — have battery problems which cause them to smoke or spark and generally burn the hell out of things. In the company’s words:

“Apple has determined that in very rare cases batteries in first generation iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 can overheat causing failure and deformation of the iPod nano. Apple has received very few reports of such incidents (less than 0.001 percent of first generation iPod nano units), which have been traced back to a single battery supplier. There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage, and no reports of incidents for any other iPod nano model.

Any first generation iPod nano customers who have experienced their battery overheating should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Any other customers who have concerns about their first generation iPod nano battery should also contact AppleCare.”

Well, thanks guys… at least we didn’t die.

X-Files iPods: misplaced merchandising, or desperate bid for profitability?

August 14th, 2008 by

We want to believe it’s not the latter. Okay, this is (hopefully) the last one of these Fox-branded iPods we do, we just thought it would be funny, you know, because the movie did so badly and… stuff. Yeah, on second thought, not very funny.

Apple working on streaming your iTunes library to your iPhone?

August 7th, 2008 by

Apple’s experimented with allowing iTunes to stream over the internet as well as your LAN in the past and quickly removed the feature (probably due to RIAA pressure), so we’re not placing too much stock in this, but AppleInsider’s unearthed a patent that seems to describe a way to stream music over the ‘net to your iPhone / iPod touch. The goal is to prevent you from having to selectively sync content to your device — instead, you’d sync just the metadata and stream whatever you wanted direct from your machine as though it was all stored locally. There are some obvious problems here — it wouldn’t work if you didn’t have service (or over EDGE, really), most home upstream connections aren’t that fast, etc., etc., — but it’s certainly interesting, and a welcome addition to local storage if it ever makes the scene. In the meantime, how about working in some of those new UI elements from the Remote app into the iPod app?

[Via Macrumors, thanks Mark]

Belkin adds iPhone 3G compatibility to latest TuneCast Auto

August 2nd, 2008 by

Surely you feel like buying an all new TuneCast Auto just months after picking up the original, right? Trust us, we can hear the groans from here. For the scads of iPhone 3G owners who are downright perturbed by the inability to charge the thing with some older accessories, you’ll be none too pleased when handing over $79.99 for this. But unless you flex your DIY muscle and come up with some other solution (please share, will you?), buying an iPhone 3G-friendly alternative looks to be the only solution. This FM transmitter boasts ClearScan technology in order to hunt down and lock into the best FM frequency (good luck with that), but as we’ve already pointed out, the biggest boon is the iPhone 3G charging ability. Hey Apple, Belkin says “thanks.” Whatever that means.

iPhone 2.1 beta firmware hints at new iPod touch?

July 29th, 2008 by

Who knows how much this is worth, but there’s a lot of chatter flying around today about some text strings in the beta release of iPhone OS 2.1 that make reference to an “iPod2,1.” Seeing as the current iPod touch is designated “iPod1,1,” that’s a pretty strong hint that a new model is coming — but hey, guess what? Of course a new model is eventually coming. What’s more, we’d bet it’s going to be almost exactly the same as the current iPod touch, with maybe the addition of GPS — it’s not like Apple is going to position this thing above the iPhone. Wake us up when tapping in Steve’s birthday backwards spits out a ship date, pricing, and specs, and maybe then we’ll be more excited.

NEONECO offers up active iPod swing speaker

July 24th, 2008 by

Attachable iPod speakers are nearly as old as the DAP itself, but NEONECO may actually be onto something with its swing speaker. Rather than simply tapping into the iPod’s headphone jack and hoping that listeners have canine-like hearing abilities, this unit includes its own source of power — a rechargeable battery. This enables the stereo speakers to be louder than passive alternatives, though we can’t speak for the sound quality. It’s available now in South Korea for ₩29,000 ($29; iPod nano), ₩32,000 ($32; iPod classic) or ₩35,000 ($35; iPod touch).

iPod touch 1.1.5 shows up, confusion abounds

July 15th, 2008 by

iPod touch

For the three of you who don’t either have $10 for 2.0 or didn’t already grab the leaked version for free, Apple has released iPod touch firmware version 1.1.5. There’s little word as to what the point revision does (we assume stability fixes and what-not), but we do know that it doesn’t include the App Store. In the end, that might be a good thing for those of you who just use your iPod touch as an iPod and aren’t interested in all that AIM and Monkey Ball craziness, which we respect. Really. The direct link to the file is in the Read link — use at your own discretion.

Belkin unveils the GoStudio iPod recording dock

July 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Belkin’s not letting a little thing like the launch of the iPhone 3G slow it down this morning — in addition to all that wireless gear, it’s even got the stones to throw down an iPod accessory, which is a little funny. The GoStudio recorder is a full-featured recording dock for the iPod 5G, classic, and 2G and 3G nanos, which allows you to record 16-bit 44.1kHz audio directly from two built-in stereo mics or quarter-inch, XLR, and minijack inputs, and dump it all into iTunes when you’re done. The $119 box isn’t the sexiest thing we’ve ever seen, but if you’re a dedicated podcaster or just suffer from delusions of being the next Martin Hannett, it’s probably worth a look.

Surprise! Apple to refresh iPod nano / touch, make tons of iPhones

June 28th, 2008 by

AppleAnalysts love to come up with all sorts of conjecture based on history, numbers, and general guesswork. In this case, FBR Research analyst Craig Berger has a few predictions to give us regarding the future of Apple’s iPod and iPhone lines. We’ll keep them short and sweet here and leave the static mulling to you. First, he expects an updated, lower-priced iPod nano in the near future along with product refreshes for both the iPod classic and touch. That sounds about right, as Apple is almost due for updates of those products anyway. As far as Apple’s production rate, he says Apple has increased iPod production around 15 percent and sees Apple shipping 15 million iPhone 3G by the end of the year (he’s a big fan of the number “15″). Nothing really surprising here, but if all this pans out, Apple will dig deeper into the smart phone market while tightening its stranglehold on the PMP landscape.

Nike+ gym equipment coming July — iPhone integration imminent?

June 27th, 2008 by

24 Hour Fitness just announced that it will be the first to offer Nike+ iPod enabled gym equipment at select clubs starting next month. The press release says the following:

“Nike and Apple worked with major gym equipment manufacturers to make their cardio equipment Nike + iPod compatible so gym members can easily track and record workouts on cardio equipment like treadmills, stair steppers, elliptical trainers and stationary bikes.”

The press release only mentions the iPod nano. In fact, that may be all that we’re talking about here. Nevertheless, July is synonymous with the iPhone 3G, 2.0 firmware, and App Store launches and there’s that little ol’ patent application (the source of the picture above) which describes leveraging the iPhone’s sensors to turn it into a “lifestyle companion.” Nike of course, already confirmed that its Plus system would be extending to the iPhone and iPod touch sometime in the future. July seems as good a time as any don’t you think?

Alesis’ ProTrack turns your iPod into portable digital recorder

June 22nd, 2008 by

Though not the first audio recorder we’ve seen to get buddy-buddy with Apple’s darling for storage — nor the first Alesis product to partner up with the iPod — the ProTrack is still pretty swank in its own right. Hailed as a “professional handheld digital stereo recorder for iPod,” this unit enables direct-to-iPod stereo digital recording for folks needing gobs of storage space. You’ll find a pair of condenser microphones built-in along with twin XLR - 1/4-inch inputs for connecting external mics and line sources. Folks who can’t locate an AC outlet can count on four to five hours of use from four AAA cells, but it should be noted that only select iPods (2G / 3G nanos, 5G iPods and the iPod classic) are supported. Look for this one to land in Q3 for a currently undisclosed price.

Apple trademarks iPod’s design, applies for iPhone design mark

May 12th, 2008 by

Quick, what’s the best way to dress up an otherwise dry piece on how companies can register non-traditional trademarks? If you answered “mention Apple and the iPod,” you’re the big winner — and you’ve gotten yourself published in the Wall Street Journal. We’ll be the first to admit that Apple’s January registration of the three-dimensional design of the iPod strains credulity, but the simple fact is that non-traditional trademarks have been around for a while now — we seem to remember a little kerfuffle regarding magenta recently, but we can’t quite recall the exact details. Similarly, Nokia trademarked the 12 notes of its default ringtone back in September (even though they’re part of a larger piece written in 1902 called “Gran Vals”), NBC has a mark on its ding-ding-ding station ID, and Coca-Cola has registrations for basically every bottle design it sells. Still, you can bet Apple legal threw quite a pizza party when this mark was approved — and we can only imagine the kind of buttoned-down corporate lawyer jam that’ll go down if the company succeeds in getting a mark on the design of the iPhone, which it’s currently applied for. Hope you’re ready for some more funktastic control layouts.
