Tough luck, Mitsubishi and Funai. Big talk is all fine and dandy, but in our world, it’s the results that count. Say hello to Sharp’s AQUOS DX family, the world’s first range of LCD HDTVs to boast internal Blu-ray players. Slated to hit in 26- (LC-26DX1), 32- (LC-32DX1), 37- (LC-37DX1), 42- (LC-42DX1), 46- (LC-46DX1) and 52-inch (LC-52DX1) sizes, the whole lot will come equipped with an integrated HDTV tuner, bottom-mounted speaker and the ability to handle BD flicks sans an external deck. Of note, only the 37-inch through 52-inch sets offer Full HD 1080p resolutions (1,920 x 1,080), as the other two get stuck with “just” 1,366 x 768. Best of all, those in Japan will barely have to wait a month to see these in shops, as the entire crew is destined to ship in late November (in black and white motifs) for around ¥200,000 ($1,963) to ¥500,000 ($4,909) depending on size. As for the rest of the globe? Put on your patience caps.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_finally_refreshes_Cinema_Displays’; Another rumor to tick off the list, Apple just announced the 24-inch Cinema Display. LED-backlit, check; Mini DisplayPort, check; $899 list price, check; MagSafe adapter, check. In fact, it has a tri-pronged cable that also includes USB . Other specs include a native 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, built-in iSight camera / microphone, integrated stereo speakers and a 3-port USB hub. Can you wait ’til November?

So you’ve just purchased a new desktop that checks in at 1.6- x 2.4 - x 2.1-inches (actual size may vary), and you’re looking for the perfect LCD to accompany it. At long last, we finally have a solution for the aforementioned quandary. The Century LCD-4300U is a 4.3-inch LCD monitor that not only provides the convenience of a USB connection, but it also gets every ounce of energy it needs via that same USB cable. The mini monitor touts an 800 x 480 resolution, LED-backlighting and compatibility with Windows XP / Vista and OS X. Now, if only the darn thing didn’t cost ¥19,800 ($197), we might have ourselves a runaway winner.

The highly controversial (okay, maybe not so much) Scarlet series from LG is being expanded today with the introduction of the LG80. The natural step-up from the LG60 and LG70 features an undisclosed screen size (though we assume it’ll range from 42- to 65-inches) with a Full HD (1080p) resolution, 30,000:1 contrast ratio, three AV modes (for movies / video games / sports) and a USB 2.0 port for piping in photos or digital video files. You’ll also find a pair of HDMI 1.3 sockets, but the real kicker is the sound system. When powered on, two side speakers extend from the rear of the unit while working alongside the stationary center speaker and “subwoofer” to create a 3.1 system with 50-watts of output. Sure, it’s not a 3,000-watt, 7.1-channel master rig, but it’s probably decent enough for an inbuilt setup. Look for this one to ship everywhere save for the US and Europe starting later this year.

Acer believes you’re seeking a PC with a Blu-ray drive and formidable storage space so you can watch hours and hours of high definition video. That’s why it’s introducing the AX3200 desktop (suggested retail: $679.99) and the P244W 24-inch 1080p LCD display ($399) — to fill that consumer electronics-shaped hole that you didn’t even know existed within you. The compact desktop sports an AMD Phenom X3 8450 triple-core processor, 4GB of RAM, a 640GB hard drive, and NVIDIA’s GeForce 8200 integrated graphics chip. The graphics solution won’t rev up the frames in modern computer games — especially not at the P244W’s 1920 x 1080 resolution — but it’ll do fine for watching movies, and there are tons of great Blu-ray releases out there by now, right? Right?

It’s been almost a full year since Samsung first announced its plans for a 3-inch WVGA OLED panel, but it’s now finally delivered, and found a partner in the form of KDDI, which was showing off the panel at CEATEC. As Tech-On notes, the panel is quite the upgrade over Samsung’s current top-end 3-inch QVGA panel and, best of all, KDDI says that it’ll be showing up in actual products “shortly,” though it’s not about to get any more specific than that. As if that wasn’t enough, KDDI also had a new “3D LCD” panel built by an unnamed “Japanese panel manufacturer” on hand at the show. It boasts the same WVGA resolution as the OLED and employs a “parallax barrier method” to magically “convert 2D images into 3D in real time — check that out after the break, and look for the panels to be productized by the end of 2009.

NEC’s already bolstered its EA series of LCD monitors with two frog-ladden models, but it looks like it’s not stopping there, with it now also introducing the new 24-inch EA241WM and 19-inch EA191M models to complement its existing, 22- and 26-inch LCDs. The former of those boasts a PVA panel and the same 1,920 x 1,200 resolution as its larger counterpart, along with the usual 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a 400cd/m2 brightness rating, DVI and VGA ports (but no HDMI), a four-port USB hub, and some apparently discreet built-in speakers. The 19-incher, on the other hand, opts for a standard aspect ratio and a 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, but boosts the contrast ratio to 1,500:1 and knocks the brightness down to 250cd/m2. Look for both of ‘em to land later this month, with the EA241WM running $549 and the EA191M setting you back $379.

Enticed by Dell’s new, slightly less hard-edged 22-, 23-, and 24-inch LCDs but looking for something a little easier on the wallet (and your desk)? Well, it looks like you’re in luck, as the company has just let loose some matching 17- and 19-inch models that each come in under $200. From the looks of it, the $199, 19-inch S1909WX is by far the better bargain of the two, with it boasting a 1440 x 900 resolution, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a 300cd/m2 brightness rating, and an HDCP compatible DVI port. The 17-inch S1709W, on the other hand, packs the same resolution and will save you twenty bucks, but you’ll have to make do with a 600:1 contrast ratio, 250cd/m2 brightness, and nothing more than a plain old VGA port, not to mention just 17-inches of screen real estate. Sold? You know where to get ‘em.

While we knew these new Sharp Aquos HDTVs were coming, we had no idea how thin and bright they were in person. Today at CEATEC 2008 Sharp officially announced its LC-65XS1U-S (65-inch) and LC-52XS1U-S (52-inch) AQUOS LCD HDTVs right at CEATEC Japan’s opening bell. The displays’ 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 1080P panel are nice and all, but we now know they measure in at a super gaunt 2.28-cm (0.9-inch) depth and are outfitted with a 2.1-channel, three-way five-speaker system that Sharp jointly developed with Pioneer. Meanwhile, Sharp boasts some serious energy savings with the new displays, promising a 26% reduction in power consumption. Expect them to hit stores in Japan October 15 in limited numbers for an undisclosed (read: ’spensive) price. Check the emaciated photos in the gallery if you’re so inclined.

Look out, tweens — Philips has a new line of LCD TVs aimed squarely at your wall / bedroom pedestal. Introduced over in Italy, the Flavors family will initially consist of a 22-, 32- and 42-inch set, the latter of which packs a 1080p panel, 30,000:1 contrast ratio, 5-millisecond response time, 500 cd/m2 brightness and a pair of HDMI ports. The concept here is pretty easy to grasp — each set comes bundled with two interchangeable frames which are reportedly held up by good ole magnetism, and if two just aren’t enough, more can certainly be ordered. Currently, Philips simply has a placeholder page up for the new crew, so we’ll just let you simmer on the prices for now: they’ll be €549 ($803), €799 ($1,168) and €1,199 ($1,754) in order of mention.

We’re not sure what’s up with Dell and its displays, but for whatever reason, it actually prefers to sneak new stuff out and just let you try to find it. After pushing out a swank new WUXGA projector with nary a peep, the Round Rock powerhouse has now hosted up a new 1080p LCD monitor dubbed the S2309W. Granted, the display is currently only on the firm’s Canadian site, but we reckon it’s only a matter of time before it makes it to other markets. As for specs, we’ve got a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 5-millisecond response time, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and DVI / VGA inputs. No price is mentioned, but it should be shipping in under a fortnight to those who figure out a way to buy it.
[Thanks, Alex]

To put Casio’s achievement into perspective, most 7-inch PMPs and UMPCs generally equipped with 800 x 480 LCDs can’t match the pixel density of Casio’s new 2-inch display. Using a proprietary Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT (HAST) LCD, Casio achieves a 960 x 540 pixel resolution resulting in 546 pixels per inch supporting 16.8 million colors — hoozah! Although not announced, we’ll undoubtedly see these in future NTT DoCoMo superphones as soon as these displays hit mass production.

LG isn’t making any promises about saving the planet with this one, but those looking for a no-frills LCD monitor could certainly do a lot worse than its new 22-inch W2271TC model, which boasts some decent enough specs and an “affordable” but as yet unspecified price tag. Headlining that spec list is a promised 20,000:1 “Digital Fine” contrast ratio, which certainly stands out from the otherwise ordinary 1680 x 1050 resolution, 5ms response time, and 300 nits brightness, even it may not actually be all that noticeably different from a monitor with a less attention-grabbing number. You’ll also get some built-in speakers and an integrated webcam, which apparently even boasts some of that nifty face-tracking technology, though we’re going to go out an a limb and guess that the entire monitor doesn’t keep moving to face you.

On the whole, we’d say KURO plasma owners are pretty stoked about their sets. Those who’d prefer a KURO-branded LCD, however, have been waiting anxiously to hear something more from ole Pioneer for months. Thankfully, the firm has finally spoken, and while it doesn’t mention any brand / model names specifically, we can assume that those LCD HDTVs we saw emerge in Europe will be gracing US shores in mere months. During the first half of 2009, Pioneer LCD HDTVs will be loosed in North America and Asia, and unless plans change, the panels within will actually be supplied by Sharp. Might we be on the lookout for a sneak peek at CES ‘09?

Lenovo’s already kicked out a pair of low-end ThinkVision monitors that promise to do their small part for the environment, and it’s now finally expanded that enviro-mindedness to some of its higher-end offerings. At the very top of the heap is the 24-inch L2440x (pictured above), which boasts the usual 1920×1200 and some less-than-common white LED backlighting, which is apparently a first for a Lenovo monitor. Those looking to keep things fluorescent-backed can also opt for the otherwise identical L2440p, or you can drop down to the 22-inch L2240p monitor, which also scales the resolution back to 1680 x 1050. Rounding out the latest offerings are the 17-inch L1700p and 19-inch L1940p, which unsurprisingly offer the biggest energy savings and, like the other models, also pack less mercury content than your usual LCD monitor. Look for the whole lot of them to be available by the end of this month, with prices ranging from $230 to $750.

AOC already dished out a number of HD LCD monitors for those with a few extra bucks to spare, but the 17-inch V17 keeps things relatively cheap ($199.99) and exceptionally thin. More specifically, the monitor checks in at just 12-millimeters deep — it’s no XEL-1, sure, but that’s pretty frickin’ slim. Furthermore, it includes a built-in VGA webcam, glass base and integrated speakers to boot. We’re still waiting to hear back on the screen resolution, but considering that this won’t ship until late 2008 at the earliest, you’ve still got time to think on it. Full release after the break.

Nothing much to phone home over here, just a run-of-the-mill 22-incher with a mighty respectable WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution. The Buffalo FTD-HD2232HSR/BK also boasts a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 300cd/m2 brightness, HDCP-compatible DVI port, 170-degree viewing angles and an “ECO” mode that’ll save energy… somehow. Word on the street has it landing here shortly for around €280 ($390).

LaCie plays with a lot of different products, like molten external HDDs and goofy USB hubs, but is totally serious when it comes to displays. Its latest offering is a trio of professional pixel-pushers, the 720, 724, and 730, growing from 20- to 30-inches as you go. The $2,500 720 is 4:3, delivering a pathetic resolution of 1600 x 1200, while the other two stretch to 16:10, 1920 x 1200 on the $3,300 724 and 2560 x 1600 in the top-of-the-line $6,500 730. The top two models feature a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 6ms response time, 14-bit gamma correction, and accurate reproduction of 125 percent the NTSC gamut (guaranteed via included blue eye pro hardware calibration). That’s a huge leap over the paltry 10-bit correction and 92 percent NTSC supported by the old 324 — for a mere three times the cost.

For the most part, Runco stays pretty quiet in the consumer realm… until CEDIA rolls around. Once again, the high-end AV company is firing on all cylinders in Denver, announcing seven new 1080p LCD / plasma displays including its largest LCD to date, the 70-inch Crystal Series CX-70DHD (pictured). Along with the new panels, the outfit is unveiling its exclusive OPAL (Optical Path Alignment) technology on select models which “delivers extreme glare reduction and enhanced contrast for high ambient light environments.” The aforesaid 70-incher (shipping mid-October for $34,995) actually comes bundled with an external DHD video controller / processor, which incorporates Runco’s Vivix II tech to “enhance all digital and NTSC content to near high-definition quality.” We’ll admit, that sounds an awful lot like something Toshiba’s got going on just a few booths over, but make of it what you will. For details on the other half dozen sets, hop on past the break.
