Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700 gets reviewed, practicality gets questioned

October 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

You could tell from the specs sheet that Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700 wasn’t a common man’s machine, and a review from the cats at Laptop Mag has all but confirmed that. Dubbed “a beast of a 17-inch [laptop],” this rig was marveled upon right from the get-go; after all, it’s not everyday that you see a full-fledged digitizer built right into the palm rest, not to mention the integrated color calibrator. Unfortunately, such niceties weren’t bundled in for free, as the review unit they had rocked a $3,802 price tag. Still, the design, build quality and performance were all stellar, but critics couldn’t help but point out that this unique creature wouldn’t be worthwhile for everyone. In fact, they praised Lenovo for “incorporated some truly innovative features,” but they did confess that they weren’t “entirely convinced of their practicality.” Think long and hard before digging into your kids’ college fund for this one, you hear?

Laptop makers and GSM Association team on Mobile Broadband branding plan

September 30th, 2008 by

Laptops with built-in WWAN modems aren’t anything new, but there’s a hodgepodge of hardware and services available — a situaton the GSM Association is trying to simplify with the new Mobile Broadband standardization initiative. Sure, it’s mostly an excuse to get another sticker on your gear, but companies like Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Toshiba, Qualcomm and a bunch of carriers are on board to ensure that Mobile Broadband-certified machines will be ready and able to connect in some 91 countries around the world — and what’s more, they’re committed to spending a cool billion dollars in the next year promoting MB as a “compelling alternative” to WiFi and WiMAX. That should be an interesting dilemma for the carriers that also run hotspot networks, but we’ve got a feeling everyone’s happy as long as the sub fees keep rolling in.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 gets reviewed

September 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The folks at Laptop Magazine already offered up a few thoughts on Lenovo’s IdeaPad S10 netbook after they got their hands on one last month but, as is their nature, they’ve now followed things up with a full review now that the unit is actually landing into the hands of customers. As you might expect, while they did find the netbook to be one of the most stylish options currently avaialble, they also found quite a few trade-offs, including a slightly less spacious keyboard than is normally found on a 10-inch netbook, and an unfortunately weak three-cell battery. Somewhat notably, they also found that while the S10 was a “bit warmer” than other netbooks, it wasn’t the worst they’ve seen, with the highest measured temperature being 101° fahrenheit, which is a bit less toasty than some earlier reports. Be sure to hit up the read link below for the full rundown, including some benchmarks and, of course, plenty of pictures.

Lenovo S10s start shipping out

September 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, it looks like anyone that ordered a Lenovo S10 netbook may be able to rest a bit easier, as at least some of ‘em are now finally shipping out, making that supposed two-month delay look increasingly like a false alarm. Judging from the discussion on Slickdeals.net, it seems that both white and black models are shipping, although a few folks are also reporting that their ship date has been pushed to late October. Any movement with your order? Let us know in comments.

[Thanks, Chris and Lonnie]

Lenovo ThinkPad X200 tablet goes on sale

September 23rd, 2008 by

Anyone interested in Lenovo’s ThinkPad X200 tablet is no doubt pretty well acquainted with it by now, and if you’re sold on it you can now finally get your order in for one, though it’ll apparently still take one or two weeks to actually ship. Contrary to what we had heard earlier, it looks like the base price starts at a slightly more reasonable $1,844, although you’ll have to drop an additional $275 if you want a fancy MultiTouch + MultiView display, and the rest of the baseline specs are also expectedly lightweight. That’s nothing an extra $1,000 or so in upgrades can’t fix though — hit up the link below to get configuring

[Thanks, Micah]

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X200t convertible tablet gets reviewed

September 21st, 2008 by

It didn’t take long for Lenovo’s two-faced ThinkPad X200t to hit the test bench after coming over to US soil, and the critics over at Laptop Mag have mostly positive things to say about it. For starters, the convertible tablet maintains the “security, durability, and performance” that we’ve come to expect from Lenovo. The keyboard was deemed “excellent,” the lightweight design was applauded, the display performed admirably and the performance was very satisfactory (or “snappy,” as it were). The biggest knocks on the machine were the omission of an optical drive and the below average battery life; testers only squeezed out around 6 hours, which was far less than the company’s claim of 10.3 hours. Still, at just north of two large, the X200 was seen as an excellent choice for those seeking a versatile business machine, particularly if you dig that stylus-on-screen action.

Lenovo X200t swivel tablet hands-on

September 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re torn. Lenovo kicks ass in the tablet space, and the X200t is no exception to that rule, but we were hoping for a little more “X200” and a little less traditional Lenovo tablet action. Compared to its straight-up X200 namesake, the X200t is mega heavy, due to a different battery, screen and internals. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just a letdown compared to the insanely great engineering that Lenovo poured into the X300 and X200. We’re also a little miffed that Lenovo hasn’t worked out a capacitive touch option yet, though they claim that the X200t’s dual-purpose touchscreen has been improved, including a method for switching off touch automatically when the pen is in close proximity to the screen, to allow for some palm resting. They were just showing pen-only units this evening, so we didn’t get to test that out. Everything else is traditional love-it-or-hate-it ThinkPad design, quality and touchpad-freeness.

Thinkpad X200t and X200s announced

September 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Lenonvo’s ThinkPad X200t tablet finally made the trip Stateside after hiding out in Hong Kong for the past few weeks, and it’s brought a little friend with it — the X200s laptop. As expected, the X200t replaces the X61t, and specs for the new machines are right in line with that transition: available processors range from a 1.2GHz SU9300 Core 2 Duo to a 1.86GHz SL9400 chip, RAM maxes out a 4GB, there’s a 128GB Samsung SSD option, graphics are integrated GMA 4500MHD, and WWAN, WiMAX and UWB are optional. Notable changes from the the X61t in particular include a dual swivel hinge, an LED backit 1280 x 800 screen, and claimed 50% improvement in battery life to 15 hours, reduced touch pressure with a Wacom digitizer, and built-in GPS when the WWAN option is ordered. Prices should start at $2325 when these start going out in October, less for the X200s — we’ll have a hands-on for you ASAP, but there’s a vid after the break to hold you over.

Lenovo rolls out bundle of new enviro-minded ThinkVision monitors

September 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Lenovo’s already kicked out a pair of low-end ThinkVision monitors that promise to do their small part for the environment, and it’s now finally expanded that enviro-mindedness to some of its higher-end offerings. At the very top of the heap is the 24-inch L2440x (pictured above), which boasts the usual 1920×1200 and some less-than-common white LED backlighting, which is apparently a first for a Lenovo monitor. Those looking to keep things fluorescent-backed can also opt for the otherwise identical L2440p, or you can drop down to the 22-inch L2240p monitor, which also scales the resolution back to 1680 x 1050. Rounding out the latest offerings are the 17-inch L1700p and 19-inch L1940p, which unsurprisingly offer the biggest energy savings and, like the other models, also pack less mercury content than your usual LCD monitor. Look for the whole lot of them to be available by the end of this month, with prices ranging from $230 to $750.

Lenovo stops selling Linux-based PCs via the web

September 13th, 2008 by

While Dell seems to be madly and passionately in love with Linux, rival Lenovo is breaking things off… or at least refusing to take things any further via IM. Reportedly, the computer maker has decided it best to stop offering Linux-based machines via its online sales portal, though open-source fanatics can still snap up Linux-infused rigs through Lenovo’s own or partner direct sales teams. Ray Gorman, a spokesman for the company, noted that its “commitment to Linux has not changed,” and he continued on to say that “what has changed is that customers will no longer be able to order Lenovo ThinkPads and ThinkCentres with pre-installed Linux via the lenovo.com website.” Truthfully, there’s no bitterness with Linux here — online sales figures simply didn’t justify keeping ‘em on there. And you know, money talks.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10: the heat it generates is remarkable

September 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve been pretty underwhelmed by the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 thus far, and the news that this machine runs particularly hot (and not in the good way!) isn’t likely to win over too many, uh, fans. The keyboard itself gets pretty warm, with temperatures measured between 38 and 42°C (100.4 and 107.6°F). That slightly edges out tests performed on the Eee PC 900 (101°F / 38°C), and leaves your Cloudbook (83°F / 28°C) as cool as a cucumber. There’s no word on the bottom side’s heat signature, but with keys like this we aren’t expecting good things.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X301 gets reviewed

September 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We all know the X300 was fairly widely praised, though that price tag was mighty prohibitive. Still, if you’ve got the coin to play around with ultrathin ultraportables, the X301 is a welcome upgrade. According to Laptop Mag, the Centrino 2 platform and built-in DisplayPort made an “already excellent machine even better.” Most of the basics from the X300 are still here, but critics couldn’t help but swoon over the new inclusions. Regrettably, the battery life was said to be an hour or two short for their liking, so it sounds as if you’ll want to factor in an extra pack if you’re the type who strays from power outlets. Hit the read link for the full rundown, just don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.

Lenovo S10 delayed two months?

September 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re not sure what to make of this, but Liliputing says that orders for Lenovo’s sharp S10 netbook have been just been delayed for two months. Given the standardized nature of the Atom-based internals and this little guy’s recent appearances in the wild and at the FCC, we’d venture that this has more to do with stock issues than with design problems, so hopefully things will get sorted a lot quicker than two months — although apparently even Lenovo didn’t know what parts it was putting in this thing, so who knows what’s going on. Anyone else have an order pushed back — or better yet, shipped out? Let us know in comments!

Touching tale of heartbreak promotes Lenovo S10, rends our hearts in twain

September 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While we’ve been dealing with short-form ad fare in the States, China’s gone all artsy on us, with Lenovo releasing a short film to promote its S9 / S10 netbook. We won’t ruin the plot for you — the dialogue is all in Chinese, so it’s not like we could — but suffice it to say that the Lenovo S10 and unrequited love play major roles.

[Thanks, Patrick]

Lenovo ThinkPad SL300 gets examined up close

September 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Lenovo’s new ThinkPad SL300 may not stand out too much from the ThinkPad pack, but it’s budget-friendly price will no doubt help it attract its share of curious potential buyers, and NotebookReview has now offered a few pics and impressions to give them an idea of what they may be in store for. As you might expect, Lenovo had to cut a few corners to keep the price down, and the build quality looks to have take some of the biggest hits, with it described as “durable” but with minor flexing all around and even some squeaking around the TouchPoint buttons. On the upside, the system’s fairly high-end specs delivered some impressive enough performance, and the included 6-cell battery managed to last for a full four hours with the WiFi enabled (turning it off resulted in an extra 30 minutes). Still undecided? Then hit up the link below for plenty more pics and impressions.

Lenovo Ideapad U8 gets priced, unboxed, reviewed in Chinese

August 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Although Lenovo’s slick IdeaPad U8 has been floating around in prototype form for a while, it only made its formal debut at the Olympics recently, and now it’s starting to appear on Chinese websites — Zol.com.cn has a huge unboxing and review, while Yesky says it’ll be priced at 4,999 yuan, or about $731. That’s a little more than the “smartphone pricing” we were promised, but we’re guessing those of you looking to import this Asia-only piece were likely always expecting to throw down some coin for it. Tons more pics in the read links — we’re not going to try and depend on machine translation to understand the review, anyone care to give us the gist?

Lenovo’s ThinkPad W500 and W700 now on sale

August 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not like Lenovo has been keeping this duo on the DL or anything, but the potent W500 and W700 are now available to order. Hailed as the company’s “most powerful notebooks ever,” the 15.4-inch W500 gets going from $1,629 with a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 CPU, Vista Home Premium, a WSXGA+ display, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, ATI’s 512MB Mobility FireGL V5700, a 100GB HDD, DVD combo drive, WiFi and a 6-cell battery. Overshadowing that is the 17-inch W700, which starts at $2,978 and features a WXGA+ display, T9400 CPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA’s 512MB Quadro FX-2700 and a 160GB hard drive. The W500 should ship within 1 to 2 weeks, while the W700 isn’t expected to head your way for a solid month. No worries — that gives you plenty of time to save up for the $1,275 QX9300 Core 2 Extreme option.

Thinkpad X200t surfaces in the wild

August 23rd, 2008 by

While we’ve seen tons of evidence that the Thinkpad X200t is ready to hit, the tiny tablet’s managed to remain thoroughly hidden until now — and unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like the X61t it’s undoubetedly going to replace. Still no specs, pricing, or release date to be found, but we’re guessing those’ll come any day now.

Lenovo’s X200T tablet with UWB confirmed by FCC

August 22nd, 2008 by

There it is, the X200 Tablet courtesy of the FCC. No more guessing, no more burrowing into the bowels of asian Baptist organizations, the X200T is real and packing a bit of UWB special sauce for UltraBase docking. We expect to see it appear on Lenovo’s retail site with loads of misprinted features, errant pricing, and bogus delivery dates any day now.
