Mouse Computer doles out dueling Core i7-powered desktops

March 14th, 2009 by

It has seriously been a hot, hot minute since we’ve seen a compelling new desktop from the doors of Mouse Computer, but lo and behold, we’ve finally found a pair worth glancing all the way to Japan just to swoon over. The outfit’s NextGear L720 and Masterpiece V1200 lines arrive with all manners of Core i7 CPUs within, each boasting between 3GB and 12GB of DDR3 RAM, SATA hard drives and NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Prospective buyers can also load one up with a Blu-ray drive should they choose, but you can plan on laying down ¥110,000 ($1,121) at the very least to get your palms around one.

Sharkoon Rush FireGlider gaming mouse comes with weights, flame job

March 10th, 2009 by

Not that weight-adjustable mice are new — in fact, we’ve been mostly ignoring them since 2006 — but Sharkoon is hoping that you’ll be intrigued enough by having a few slugs in your critter that you’ll go ahead and bite the proverbial bullet. The Rush FireGlider is decidedly not subtle, sporting a vivacious flame covered paint job along with a no-slip grip, a half dozen programmable buttons, maximum resolution of 3,600 DPI, Teflon feet for superior gliding and an obligatory internal tuning system to adjust its weight from 118 to 135 grams. Too bad the Yanks in attendance will have to fly quite aways to drop €25 ($32) in order to claim one.

Gigabyte lays out new mice and keyboards for CeBIT debut

March 2nd, 2009 by

We already knew that Gigabyte was planning a few netbook launches here in Hannover, but now we’re receiving word that a number of new mice and keyboards should also be on display. First up is the GM-M8000 laser gaming mouse, which boasts a 4,000dpi sensor, a scaling-designated switching button, five other programmable buttons, an ergonomic design and a trio of profiles for storing different macro settings for different titles or users. Next up is the GM-M7800S wireless critter (pictured above), which tops out at 1,600dpi resolution but sports a leather coating along with Swarovski crystals. Closing things off are the multimedia-centric GK-K6800 and ultrathin GK-K7100 keyboards, both of which are blessed with copious amounts of hotkeys and an appropriately placed Shift button. Mum’s the word on price, but hopefully we’ll learn more once CeBIT opens its doors. Full release is after the break.

mLani introduces new “MoBi” FPS controller for PS3

February 27th, 2009 by

There’s not exactly a wealth of information about this one just yet, but peripheral maker mLani (started by the former founder of SplitFish) looks to be doing its best to make PC gamers feel a bit more at home on the PS3 with this new FPS-minded controller which, coincidentally, looks to compete directly with some of SplitFish’s own offerings. Apparently, in addition to improving your aim in Killzone 2, this one can double as a mouse for your PC and, as you can see above, it’s also wireless, although it’s at least possible that the cable between the mouse and the Wiimote-esque controller has been conveniently omitted. No word on a price, but this one’s supposedly on track for a release in the next three months or so.

[Via DigitalBattle, thanks SK]

Update: Looks like mLani has just gotten official with the controller, which is now dubbed the “MoBi” and set for release in the third week of May. Still no indication of a price, but mLani did confirm that both the mouse and controller are indeed wireless, and that the mouse (2000 DPI, 500Hz) comes with its own PC software to allow for full customization. Head on past the break for the full press release.

Jacketed hamsters demonstrate movement-powered nanogenerators

February 26th, 2009 by

Imagine this — one day, with enough steroids, your pet hamster actually could power your home by just running on its wheel. Georgia Tech researchers have discovered ways to “convert even irregular biomechanical energy into electricity,” and it’s demonstrating the finding by showing off jacket-wearing rodents that are game to run. According to the institution’s Zhong Lin Wang, the minuscule nanogenerators “can convert any mechanical disturbance into electrical energy,” which theoretically means that power can be driven by simple, irregular mechanical motion such as the vibration of vocal cords, flapping of a flag or the tapping of fingers. As with most of these university discoveries, there’s no telling how soon this stuff will be pushed out to the commercial realm, but at least they’ve found something to keep the rats busy during the off hours.

Microsoft’s SideWinder X8 BlueTrack mouse is sidewinding its way to retail this week

February 24th, 2009 by

The benefits of BlueTrack over optical or laser mousing technology in gaming situations will probably be debated amongst our children’s children, but if you’ve decided that Microsoft’s latest and greatest is the one for you, the SideWinder X8 gaming mouse hits stores this week. Besides that 13,000fps image processing of BlueTrack and a user-configurable 250 to 4,000 dpi, the mouse is a 2.4GHz wireless number with “virtually no latency” and it includes a play-and-charge cable for upping the juice without dropping the action. It even has a decent hands-on under its belt, so if you’ve been holding out for this one there’s nothing really stopping your unemployed self from heading down to a local big box and plopping down $99 for the privilege.

Cyber Sport Orbita Mouse review: It’s pretty weird

February 16th, 2009 by

Cyber Sport’s Orbita Mouse doesn’t want to be just another regular, boring mouse — and its newness goes way beyond looks. We don’t review too many mice around these parts, but this one seemed to call for some special attention, so we’ve spent the last few days trying to give it our exclusive overload treatment. This is not a mouse you can just unwrap and use, in more ways than one. Read on for our full impressions, and some glorious photos of this little dude in action.

Micro Innovations’s bamboo lineup might just save the world… from generic computer peripherals

February 12th, 2009 by

Our Panda-like obsession with bamboo is really paying off of late, what with the hundreds of bamboo ASUS laptops scattered around the Engadget HQ, the few dozen cubicles we’ve built out of Dell Studio Hybrid sleeves, and now this complete line of bamboo peripherals from Micro Innovations. Sure, they’re ugly and a little low on tech — the speakers, card reader, webcam, USB hub, keyboard and mouse couldn’t be any more generic in specifications — and as far as we can tell there’s nothing particularly “green” about the typical-seeming internals, but apparently the (undisclosed) pricing is right. Most of this stuff should be available through your electronics retailer of choice in April or May.

SteelSeries World of Warcraft Mouse equipped for hands-on impressions, +14 agility

January 22nd, 2009 by

We finally got our hands on SteelSeries’ World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse, and took the thing for a little spin across Azeroth. After hiring a rogue to open the complicated packaging and marveling at the mouse’s incomprehensible runes, we hooked up the mouse over USB and were treated to the ambient light show. The “cracks” across the back of the mouse glow with subtle colors, though we wish they could light up a bit more dramatically and actually convey game status info — but we’re boring like that. Compared to most mice, the WoW mouse is rather large and “hand supporting,” leaving behind the typical friction and frame of reference that a trailing hand and wrist usually supply. It’s nice and comfortable, but there’s a bit of a trade off, though overall we found the mouse to be incredibly “right” in responsiveness and accuracy. More impressions after the break.

Brando’s USB Aircraft Mouse was likely used somewhere in AvP

January 17th, 2009 by

No, seriously — can you not envision that heinous object above suddenly conjuring up enough energy to transform into a real live, breathing, hungry alien? Brando’s USB Aircraft Mouse is simply too frightening to recommend for children under the age of 25, but those hardened enough to control it can select one in five different hues (including camouflage, so you’ll never even know when it arrives). We also get the idea that this thing is perfect for implementing carpal tunnel syndrome into your own life, which — in our humble opinion — is worth the $17 admission charge alone.

Logitech’s G9x gaming mouse reviewed, deemed worth a look

January 10th, 2009 by

We already had a little hands-on time with Logitech’s G9x, but TechRadar was able to spend a copious amount of time with it. So much time, in fact, that it wrote up a review explaining the pros and cons of owning one. The gist of it was that the G9x didn’t really mess with the original formula of the G9, and the 5,000DPI sensor was stellar under pressure. The scroll wheel and buttons were also found to be solid, and the accompanying software was also satisfactory. All in all, the G9x didn’t seem to really shock and awe, but if you’re currently in the market for a gaming mouse, this one should supposedly make it onto your “shortlist of candidates.”

ASUS offers up branded keyboard / mouse combo, remote for Eee Box

December 26th, 2008 by

If your Eee Box experience is lacking something that you can’t quite put your finger on, we’re 85.32% sure we know what’ll fill that void. According to Eee PC News, ASUS is gearing up to ship an Eee-branded wireless keyboard / mouse combo in both black and white motifs, and if that’s still not enough Eee to cure your fever, the multi-function remote should handle those media center duties with ease. There’s no mention of a price or release date, so we suppose you should assume these are completely fictional until proven otherwise.

Crapgadget: not-even-suitable-for-gag-gifts edition

October 25th, 2008 by

We all know the holiday season is coming up, but even if you’re on the hunt for a gag gift for your fav-o-rite prankster, we can’t not recommend the following turds enough. Up first is the absolutely unbelievable Night Sweat Alarm watch, which actually wakes you up if it detects that you’re perspiring. Why? Legend has it that no one knows. Moving on, we’ve got the USB Volcano — a perfect mix of your first-grade science project and your college-era infatuation with all things USB. Things start to get really absurd when viewing the self-explanatory Glass of Milk Light and the Retro Handy Handset, but even those are potentially topped in stupidity by the Air Flow Mouse and cake-shaped USB drives. Have a look at each below before casting your vote, but keep that barf bag handy.

4Door’s RoadMice bring a little muscle to your mousepad

4Door's RoadMice bring a little muscle to your mousepad

There are ergonomic mice, floaty mice, geometric mice, and of course gaming mice, but, if you’re the type of guy or gal who’d rather be fondling a Hurst pistol-grip than any of those sissy things, then 4Door’s RoadMice are for you. They’re wireless mini modern muscle car mice that replicate the look of autos like the Dodge Charger, Chevy Z06 ‘Vette, and Ford Mustang, complete with two-button hoods, 800 dpi optical sensors, scroll wheel induction cowls, and even working headlights for safe clicking at night. Each one comes with a USB receiver, six-month unlimited mile warranty, and a vaguely authentic looking title certificate if you register online. Yeah it’s all a bit cheeky, and we’re thinking that lip-spoiler on the back of the Camaro wouldn’t do your palm any favors, but, for $45 in a variety of colors, they’re cheaper and more useful than the other bits of automotive memorabilia scattered around your office.

SteelSeries WoW MMO Gaming Mouse makes wasting your life that much easier

October 10th, 2008 by

With Wrath of the Lich King just around the corner, it’s time to up your game and finally make it out of the low double digits with that Blood Elf mage you keep telling us about. Maybe SteelSeries can help. The high-end gaming peripherals builder recently snapped up Ideazon, and together they’ve built the official World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse in close cooperation with Ideazon’s BFF Blizzard. There are 15 programmable buttons scattered across the mouse, and a new in-game configuration utility to graphically assign the buttons just where they’re needed. You can save different profiles for different purposes, and choose one of 16 million colors for those LEDs down the back. Just don’t expect any fancy auto-levelling macros or even a recommended control scheme — Blizzard still expects you to do the hard work of lining up your favorite actions and buying your gold on eBay. The laser mouse hits on November 13th to coincide with the Lich King launch, and should retail “under $100.”

Hippus’ HandshoeMouse makes pointing, clicking less strenuous

October 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Another month, another ergonomic mouse. Somehow, against all odds, we’ve found ourselves believing that this one may actually make a difference. Who knows — maybe it’s the fact that Hippus’ HandshoeMouse was developed at two medical universities in Holland and not in someone’s basement. Or maybe it’s because “extensive medical studies support the concept.” At any rate, the critter — which enables the user to “place the whole palm of their hand on the mouse without having to cling on to it” — comes in a trio of sizes based on how humongous / diminutive your gripper is and can be purchased now in black or white for €120 ($166). For ultimate carpal tunnel shielding, we’d recommend use of it with the LapWorks Gamers Desk… but only if you’re okay with being single forever.

Nova explodes your brain with the Slider X 600 gaming mouse and OVER Slide pad

September 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re having trouble choosing which gaming mouse to sink your teeth into next, here’s a newbie to add to the ever growing pile: the Nova Slider X 600. Not surprisingly, it’s tethered to a “recommended” mouse pad — a cornerstone product for this French based company. As for the laser mouse it features “indestructible” super-glide ceramic feet for speed and precision, along with 8 programmable buttons, a gold-plated USB connector, five luminous color options, and a cable that is notably positioned to the side. The 16.5-inch x 11.5-inch “OVER Slide” mouse pad boasts a 12,000 dpi ceramic surface, and promises “zero lag and optimal conditions” for the laser — you know, way better than that magazine you’ve been using. The mouse and pad can be had for $99.99 and $39.99 respectively this November.

LaserGames mouse emulator: more fun than blinding a 747 pilot

September 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

LaserGames is a mod for projectors allowing up to two players to interact with a game using a run-of-the-mill (red or green) laser pointer in place of a mouse or controller, minus the precision response. Developer Alpay Kasal of Lit Studios isn’t giving any hints on how this thing works, but we imagine it uses sensor technology similar to interactive projections — you know, the ones where a video is projected on the ground and you get to kick around a soccer ball and then watch some tacky Nokia ad at the end. If you’re up for trying this out first hand, Kasal’s prototype will soon be on public display for some wild and crazy retina burning action — no word yet on when or where. Check out his video after the jump.
