Once more it looks like Johns Hopkins has taken humanity a step closer to full-blown Borg-hood. A research team at the school has created water-soluble electronic materials that spontaneously assemble themselves into wires some 10,000 times smaller than a human hair, for potential uses that include regulating cell-to-cell communication, re-engineering neural networks, repairing damaged spinal cords and transforming individuals into cybernetically enhanced drones. The researchers also point out that the self-assembly principles used to create the nano-scale wires are based on those of beta-amyloid plaques (which have been associated with Alzheimers), so the research may someday lead to a better understanding of the disease. This is definitely good news, but we can’t help but think that once we’ve been assimilated into the hive mind Alzheimer’s will be the least of our concerns.

Putting the world’s tiniest book to shame — not to mention the Torah-inscribed grain of rice — a research team at Osaka University has “written” the letters “Si” using an atomic pen that interchanges silicon and tin atoms, enabling those who have the time, resources, and patience to manipulate said atoms one by one. The results are a diminutive 2 x 2 nm (or 40,000 times smaller than a strand of hair) which took about an hour and a half to complete. The previous best was a laughably large 0.07 x 0.10 mm tome hailing from SFU’s Nano Imaging Lab. “It’s not possible to write any smaller than this,” said researcher Masayuki Abe, adding that, while the project sounded impressive on (really tiny) paper, it had failed to garner him any coveted cool points at the local bar. Next steps for the project will be determined once the team puts the finishing touches on the “g” and the “h.”

Hope you don’t mind two similar worlds running together, because today we’re asking about not one, but two of Cupertino’s latest. The iPod touch 2G and iPod nano 4G were both simultaneously (give or take a few minutes) announced back in early September, and after getting a chance to handle both, we felt that Apple did a stand-up job with the each of ‘em. That being said, there’s always a thing or two that could use tweaked, added or removed completely, but we’ll spare you any additional opinions from us on that. Instead, we want to know how you, dear reader, would change either of Apple’s freshest PMPs. What are you digging? What’s still not good enough? The floor is yours.

Look, we know there’s some kind of good explanation for these things existing, but Apple, don’t you think it’s a little weird how they keep cropping up in stores even though you never, ever mentioned them? That’s right, those 4GB iPod nano 4Gs we saw at Dutch retailers last week have now made their way onto Best Buy’s Canadian website. Over in North America, the players will apparently sell for $139, and will be available tomorrow… or so they say.
[Thanks, Robert]

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Mystery_4GB_iPod_nano_4Gs_show_up_at_stores’; Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world — a 4GB model. As there’s been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the ‘Let’s Rock’ event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer’s site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) — though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple’s part. Regardless, they appear to be the real thing, and they appear to be on store shelves right now (in some countries, at least). If you’re looking for the ultimate Apple collector’s item, this may be just the thing. Check out the gallery below for lots of looks at the mystery nano.
Update: The UK’s Pocket-lint got hold of an Apple spokesperson who told them Apple “made a limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets, but this is not one of our main configurations.” Mystery solved, we guess — but that “limited number” bit has us thinking this was still some kind of mistake.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Who_s_copying_who_Miao_copies_iPod_nano_4G_a_year_in_advance’; Why, this is downright preposterous! How dare the copyright-ignoring, astonishingly uncreative minds of those at Miao copy Apple’s latest iPod nano design a full year in advance? They should be implausibly embarrassed by churning out a so-called Cottage MP3 player in 2007, all while the brains at Cupertino sat and pondered how to make its tiny little PMP that much better. This, people, is an outrage. An outrage!

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPod_Nano_4G_Unboxing_Hands_On_and_First_Impressions_2′; We had a chance to paw this beauty on Tuesday at the Apple event, but finally getting home and spending some quality time with the device has given us a far deeper impression of just what the folks in Cupertino have done. So far our impressions are favorable: physically, the nano redesign is a move in the right direction for the company, leaving that awkward previous generation nano on the cutting room floor, and falling much more in line with Apple’s current design language. The player feels solid and compact — maybe a bit too tiny for our big paws — though build quality is on par with the 1st generation iPhone. You can tell a lot of careful rethinking went into this, and there’s not an edge out of place. We’re going to be doing a full review of the device and its new software, but for now feast your eyes on the gallery below.

It would have been juicier if Microsoft hadn’t announced the fall Zune lineup a day early and gone directly head-to-head with Apple’s newly refreshed iPod lineup, but the fact is that if you’re in the market for a new player the past 48 hours have delivered a slew of new options. Microsoft concentrated on the software side of the equation with Zune 3.0, but Redmond’s players themselves got a WiFi music store, some new games, and Buy From FM, while Apple added in new Genius playlists across the board and updated the iPod nano’s form factor and UI. At the high end of the capacity scale, the Zune seems to have the win on paper — both the Zune 120 and the iPod classic frustratingly top out at 120GB, but the classic’s stagnated essentially at the level of the 5.5G video iPod while the Zune 120 carries all the features of its smaller siblings. On top of all that, you have the newly-thinner iPod touch, with all of its browsing, media, gaming, and third-party application features — and the lost purity of purpose adding all features those entails. That’s a ton of choices — so c’mon, kids, what’s it going to be?

Yep, there’s another 4G iPod Nano case, this time apparently accompanied by official-looking PR — we think it’s probably safe to assume we’ll be seeing this bad boy make its debut tomorrow. We’re also hearing that current-gen iPod touches are being pulled from store shelves with instructions not to sell them, anyone else hear or see anything similar?

It looks like Tata Motors is taking one step forward and one step back this week, with it announcing plans to launch an electric version of its Indica hatchback in Norway within a year while also letting out word that it has abruptly halted construction of the plant in Singur, India that was to have built its budget-priced Nano compact. That latter development was apparently the result of a long-standing dispute with farmers, who are demanding the return of some of the land that was seized by the state government, and had previously caused construction of the plant to be postponed for five days. For its part, Tata says it is now apparently considering relocating the construction site, which would likely cause the planned October launch of the Nano to be delayed.

Man, Apple’s lockdown on product leaks just isn’t as tight as it used to be — remember when having new iPod designs leaked by case manufacturers seemed totally unthinkable? Yeah, those times are over — check out these silicone cases for a fourth-gen iPod nano and second-gen iPod touch that just appeared on Alibaba. We’re not totally sold on the touch cases, but the nanos look way more legit, especially since we’ve seen some others matching this general look before; while nano KIRFs in this form factor aren’t uncommon, we’d say it’s pretty unlikely that anyone’s making several different types of silicone cases for them. We’re not calling this anywhere near 100 percent yet, but let’s just say we’re hoping Apple’s press photographers can make the new nano look a whole lot better than our pal Mr. Blurrycam by the time September 9th rolls around. More case photos after the break.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_admits_to_iPod_nano_smoking_and_sparks_will_replace’; It’s only taken a number of years and some seriously ruined pants — but Apple has finally come clean on the flammable nature of the first-generation iPod nano, and is now offering to replace the faulty devices. After reports today that two more of the media players had lit up without warning in Japan, the company issued a statement admitting that the nanos do — in fact — have battery problems which cause them to smoke or spark and generally burn the hell out of things. In the company’s words:
“Apple has determined that in very rare cases batteries in first generation iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 can overheat causing failure and deformation of the iPod nano. Apple has received very few reports of such incidents (less than 0.001 percent of first generation iPod nano units), which have been traced back to a single battery supplier. There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage, and no reports of incidents for any other iPod nano model.
Any first generation iPod nano customers who have experienced their battery overheating should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Any other customers who have concerns about their first generation iPod nano battery should also contact AppleCare.”
Well, thanks guys… at least we didn’t die.

We’re always up for another way to harvest energy from the sun, but this new nanoantenna material developed by the DoE’s Idaho National Laboratory makes solar panels seem a little passe. The material, composed of tiny gold antennas set in polyethylene plastic is tuned to gather 80 percent of energy from infrared rays in its production version, and can gather energy from the sun, earth, or even your PC’s warmth. The antennas can be tuned to different parts of the infrared spectrum, and the thin material can be sandwiched together to cover the full desired range. Unfortunately, the resulting current generated alternates at rates too high to be converted to DC with current technology — new manufacturing processes will needed — but once that problem is solved, nanoantennas should easily best solar cells in efficiency and production costs.

It looks like VIA has finally had enough of the schoolyard fights with Intel and tauntings with hair dyers, as it has just dropped word over the weekend that it’s quitting the motherboard chipset business in order to focus on processors and chipsets for motherboards that use its own Nano CPU. According to Custom PC, this is actually a move that VIA had seen coming all along, with vice president of corporate marketing saying that, “one of the main reasons we originally moved into the x86 processor business was because we believed that ultimately the third party chipset market would disappear.” Of course, that also means that VIA is putting most of its “chips” in one basket (yes, we said it) and, as Slashdot points out, it leaves other third-party chip manufacturers like SiS with some tough questions to ask themselves.

We’re only at the nano scale folks so you’ll have to keep those high school fantasies of an invisibility-cloaked romp through the girls’ locker room tucked away for now. Still, two teams of US government funded researchers under the direction of Xian Zhanga at UC Berkeley say that they’ve developed a material which can bend visible light around 3D objects, effectively making them disappear. While similar to the negative refractive properties of materials developed back in 2006, UCB’s so-called meta-material is easier to work with and absorbs far less light than those earlier products. As such, the material could scale to the size of invisibility cloaks to hide objects such as tanks or mischievous boy-wizards. However, that day is a long ways off. In the short term, the meta-material will most likely find use in the far less interesting (to consumers, anyway) application of building better microscopes.

Do you cheer for the underdog? Would you love to see VIA unseat Intel in the battle for the hearts and minds of netbook market share just because Intel’s, well, Intel? Good, then you’ll love this highly emotive video produced by VIA showing its meager 1.3GHz Nano processor kicking Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom to the curb in a 1080p HD video test. We’d be more suspect of the results had we not already seen VIA clean Intel’s house in the head-to-head benchmarks. Now pull up a seat ringside and get ready to sputter along with the Atom-based netbook — video after the break.

Your dreams of riding in the ultimate cheapo deathbox have just gotten a little bit more real. According to a report, Tata will begin production of its diminutive, ultra-affordable Nano car this Fall. The $2500 vehicle is generally known as the cheapest car in the world, though worries over inflation suggest that its price-point may move above the intended figure. In other news, sources say that Tata plans a “greener” version of the vehicle in addition to the original model, which — if it happens — will likely be a real knockout punch for penny-pinchers with an Earth-hugging mindset. Still, you’ll probably have to ship it from India, which would burn a lot of fossil fuels, which would be bad for the environment… oh just buy an old Yugo.
