Nikon’s new D90 in full, gory detail

August 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

So, Nikon finally fessed up to its new D90 prosumer DSLR, which means all that’s left for us is to do is to pick through the spec sheets, drool on the product shots and imagine ourselves taking the film industry by storm with that D90-shot indie flick we’re plotting.

INT. SUBURBAN HOME - DAY

BLOGGER sits at his computer typing. He looks inspired, witty, unkempt. The camera’s short depth of field captures the writer in his element.

Nikon D90 outed by USA Today

August 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sure, the Nikon D90 isn’t going to be any huge surprise when it arrives at this point, but it looks like whatever ta-da moment Nikon had planned just got upstaged by USA Today, which is running its piece on the new cam just a little early, complete with quotes from Nikon’s senior technical manager. Nothing we don’t know about here: 12.1 megapixels, 3-inch Live View screen with HD video recording and a kit price of $1,299. Not bad — and that HD video mode certainly sounds intriguing. At least detailed specs will still be a tiny surprise, eh?

Nikon D90 now up for order at Circuit City

August 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Nikon’s still unofficial D90 DSLR may have been pulled from Target’s website after making a brief appearance a few days ago, but it looks to be holding steady at Circuit City, where you can now get your pre-order in for the expected price of $1,299.99. As you can see above, the site is also listing the camera with a release date of September 5th, which is only a tad off the mark of some of our earlier tips. There’s also no surprises with the specs, although the “real movie-like” video recording mode that piqued our interest yesterday is apparently now officially known simply as an “HD movie mode” — a step backwards if you ask us.

[Thanks, Chris]

Update: Looks like the game is still afoot! Circuit City has pulled its page too.

Nikon D90 pops up in Best Buy’s stock systems as well

August 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, you wouldn’t expect Red to get the new D90 without Blue getting in on the action as well, would you? Yep, Best Buy has the same specs and pricing on Nikon’s newest as Circuit City — and a slightly more, uh, today stock system, from the looks of things. Better start shaking those cushions out for $1300 in change — our tipster says this bad boy’ll be in stock on September 7.

D90 outed by inventory screen at $1,300 asking price

August 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

As Photokina looms large, D90 rumors have been in abundance — with a varying range of legitimacy. This here Circuit City inventory screenshot, however, has a ring of truth to it, and even unveils a pricetag in the process: $1299.99. Not bad for rumored specs that include a 12 megapixel Live View sensor, video recording, HDMI out and GPS. The price also includes that new 18-105mm VR lens, but there’s no more info to be had at the moment. A little help, Nikon? We won’t tell a soul, we swear.

Nikon’s Coolpix S60, S710, S610 and P6000 get outed

August 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, well. What have we here? A few new Nikon’s in the run-up to Photokina, based on looks alone. Up first is the previously rumored Coolpix P6000 (£429; $835), a high-end point-and-shoot with a patently absurd 14-megapixel sensor, a 4x optical zoom, 2.7-inch touchscreen monitor, geotagging support, full manual mode and the ability to capture in RAW. If that’s a bit much for you, you can check out the ultrathin Coolpix S60 (£299; $581), which packs a 3.5-inch 16:9 touchscreen that controls just about everything, a 10-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and an HDMI output. Next up is the S710, which unfortunately gets the aforementioned 14-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch LCD and a 3.6x optical zoom. Bringing up the rear is the 10-megapixel S560 (£179; $348) and the S610 / S610c (£249; $484), the latter of which includes WiFi for instant uploading. Look for most, if not all, of these to show up on shelves next month.

Nikon D90 rumors heating up ahead of Photokina as well

August 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Man, all these old camera rumors are just seeping out of the woodwork ahead of Photokina next month — now it’s the Nikon D90 getting the zombie rumor treatment. At least we’re getting specs this time around, and they’re not bad at all: 12 megapixels, Live View, video mode (necessitating a built-in mic), HDMI out, optional GPS, and a new 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens. Sure, it’s a worthy successor to the D80 — but we’ll believe it when we see it.

P.S.- Yes, that’s another old, probably Photoshopped image that’s been floating around, so don’t get crazy — like we said, these rumors aren’t exactly new.

Nikon D700 full-frame DSLR gets unboxed on video

July 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s easy enough to drool over the press shots of Nikon’s luscious D700. Seeing someone unbox this full-frame beast on video is another experience entirely (bordering on spiritual, really). Unfortunately, the vid waiting after the break is just two minutes long and doesn’t show any clicks being depressed, but those looking to get a better idea of the size and build have plenty of reason to click through.

[Thanks, Jon]

TransferJet forms a consortium to confuse consumers

July 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

As the saying goes, the great thing about standards is that we have so many to choose from. Enter TransferJet, as much as we’d like to ignore it, it won’t go away. In fact, today the nascent close (real close, as in 3-cm or less) proximity wireless technology just snowballed itself into a proper consortium which lists a who’s who of consumer electronics and camera manufacturers including Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Nikon, Samsung, Kodak, and interestingly enough, Sony Ericsson. Sony will lead the effort to develop the specs, guidelines, and licensing schemes required to interconnect TransferJet-compliant products offering a 375Mbps data transfer rate (560Mbps theoretical) without requiring any complex setup (just touch the devices together). Right, they’re looking directly at your NFC and Wibree shortcomings Bluetooth SIG. Full list of TransferJet members after the break.

Purported Nikon Coolpix P6000 turns up online

July 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

There’s unfortunately nothing more than the image above to go on at the moment but, if it is to be believed, it looks like Nikon could finally be about to bust out a sucessor to its P5000 series, with this purported P6000 model boasting a revised design and some beefed-up specs. That includes a 13.5-megapixel sensor, a boost to ISO 6400, RAW image support, a new GPS module and, well, everything else you see listed above. Notably absent from that list, however, is any word of a price or release date, though we’d expect those details to be turning up before too long if this rumor does, in fact, turn out to be legit.

Debunk: Nikon “D700″ spyshot

Ah, so sorry fakers. Don’t you hate it when all your Photoshopping efforts come undone after the original D300 picture turns up? Oh well, D700 dreamers still have the alleged specs and hopes of a possible Monday announcement.

Nikon D700 spy shots and info piling up

June 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Spy shots of what could be the Nikon D700 have been floating around for a while now, but it’s only today that we’ve gotten a full-on body shot of the DSLR. Rumored specs basically paint the unit as a D300 body with the D3’s FX sensor crammed inside, and there’s speculation that the lens pictured is an upgraded version of Nikon’s AF-S 24-120mm VR unit. We’re also hearing that it’ll be introduced in August and go on sale in December for $3300, but that’s all speculation until this thing actually hits.

Nikon readying D90 for launch?

June 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We don’t have much to go by, but the image above image might just be the Nikon D90, successor to the well-received D80 — then again, it might be a photoshop, too. (The more we look at it, the more the area in/around the D90 badge looks pretty sloppy.) According to Nikon Rumors, it might be due as early as tomorrow; we’ll let you know if the kit goes from rumor to reality.

Nikon’s Coolpix S52c now shipping

May 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Nikon Coolpix S52c

Nikon is shipping the Coolpix S52c WiFi-capable point-and-shoot camera as expected. The S52c allows you to upload pictures to your Flickr or Nikon’s own “my Picturetown” online image repository via WiFi and comes with 6 months of T-Mobile HotSpot access. Camera specs are pretty respectable, including a 9 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 3.0-inch LCD, and optical image stabilization. The Coolpix comes in at $279.95 and should show up at retailers soon. Despite Nikon saying it’s shipping now, Amazon says it will ship on or around June 15, so hopefully they’re just a little slow on the uptake and Nikon isn’t lying through its teeth.

Screen Grabs: Lost’s Ben shoots Nikon

April 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Ben (aka Benjamin Linus), leader of the Others and all around creepy manipulator, doesn’t just shoot guns all the time — as we find out in a flashback to 2005, he also apparently shoots Nikon as well. Now, there’s certainly nothing wrong with a D100, but Ben does kind of strike us as the calculating, discerning type that would probably prefer a full-frame Canon though, you know?

24.4 megapixel Nikon D3X DSLR in the works?

April 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Some entirely too ingenious hackers have found a reference to the rumored D3X deep within the bowels of Nikon’s D3 firmware. The reference includes a list of resolutions available to the upcoming shooter, and it’s apparently set to max out at a potentially Higgs Boson-inducing 24.4 megapixels. Word has it that this sensor is likely a variant of the megapixel monster behind Sony’s upcoming A900, but since this is all being extrapolated from a few numbers hidden in some firmware, we’re going to try not to get too ahead of ourselves at this point.

Nikon slides out S52 and WiFi-friendly S52c COOLPIX fashioncams

April 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Nikon is fleshing out its “Style Series” of shooters with the COOLPIX S52 and S52c (pictured) compact cameras. The two cameras are pretty much spec-for-spec identical other than the WiFi capabilities of the S52c which allow it to upload shots wirelessly to services like Flickr or Nikon’s own “my Picturetown.” Otherwise you’re looking at a pair of fairly standard compacts, with 9 megapixel sensors, 3x zoom, optical image stabilization and so forth. Both will be available in May, with the S52 retailing for $250, and the S52c arriving at $280.

Nikon intros the Coolpix P80, encourages you to zoom

April 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not been zooming in on “things” enough lately? Well maybe Nikon can help. The company is introducing the new Coolpix P80 18x zoom camera, which covers focal lengths from 27mm to 486mm — which is a ton of millimeters. The P80 also sports the camera-maker’s fancy pants NIKKOR optics, burst modes in four, six, and 13 FPS, ISO to 6400, and a 2.7-inch, anti-reflective LCD display. The camera has a slew of onboard tweaks that make capturing your family get-togethers or drunken escapades easier (provided the two events are separate), like auto redeye reduction and face detection (Face Priority AF). The Coolpix P80 will be available this month for the astonishing MSRP of $399.99. Check the gallery below for a number of revealing angles.
