While it’s not exactly a huge surprise given that Nintendo doesn’t have an overarching account system for the Wii and DS, plenty of folks will no doubt still be disappointed to learn that the company’s new Nintendo Points won’t be transferable between the two consoles. Instead, when you buy a points card (available in 1000, 3000 and 5000 points versions), you’ll have to pick a console and spend all the points in that one place. Not exactly an ideal option, to be sure, but it seems like it’s one that we’ll be stuck with — unless Nintendo has some plans to make some major changes to the way the Wii and DSi do business.

You know how it goes — first comes the far-out rumor, then comes something a touch more believable, and then the company itself issues an all-too-familiar non-denial denial. According to MCV sources, the next step in the process will happen tomorrow, as a revamped DS storms into action at 5:00AM GMT on the 2nd of October. As for specifics, we’ll have to wait for Iwata’s supposed announcement to find out more, but we’d be utterly shocked to see this ship after Christmas. That is, if this isn’t just some elaborate scheme from the Big N to distract us all from realizing that Wiis will still be impossible to find this holiday season two full years after launch.

Bad / good news, folks: Nintendo is / isn’t working on a pedometer peripheral that will / won’t integrate with its Wii / DS console. The company has famously stated that it doesn’t plan to release “a whole lot more” accessories for the Wii, which means we’ve got at least one or two to look forward to, and this could be one of ‘em. The images surfaced on a European trademark registry site with very little supplemental info, but we do know it’s a pedometer of sorts. If we’re lucky, this is something that’ll integrate into the existing Wii Fit setup, perhaps alongside a software update to manage more info about our unhealthiness than just how far we can jump on a pair of imaginary skis, but it’s probably just as likely that we’re looking at a Wii Fit sequel, or perhaps a DS version (a handy companion to that new DS?) designed to lure us out of the house. No telling, really, but the peripheral does appear to be wireless… and wholly evil.

Nintendo seems to be tripping all over itself denying the rumors that broke over the weekend of a new camera-packing DS, but it’s not exactly doing the greatest job — “While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story” is exactly the sort of not-quite-a-no that has our new-hardware piggy bank cowering in fear. We’ll see soon, hopefully — Ninty prez Satoru Iwata is scheduled to give his fall presentation on Wednesday.

In keeping with a time-honored gadget tradition, a new paint job for the Nintendo DS Lite has surfaced: the Limited Edition Pink Ribbon — not just for girls mind you, breast cancer affects us all. While the polar white console doesn’t include any games or nifty carrying case, five dollars of your $129.99 purchase will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with Nintendo promising a minimum donation of $100,000.

It’s a couple of years late, but it looks like this Pokemon-themed DS Lite has finally made the trip over from Japan, as evidenced by this shot apparently snapped at a GameStop store. While there doesn’t seem to be a game included with this particular bundle, you will get a matching carrying case, a 22-minute Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DVD, a Grovyle poster, and a Pokemon t-shirt that we’re guessing anyone buying this will never want to take off. All for the usual price of $129.99.

Stateside DS gamers can already get online using free WiFi at McDonald’s, but now Nintendo’s bringing a slightly different version of the service to Japanese McD’s: customers can log in to get menu information and download free game demos. The service is being rolled out at 21 Tokyo-area restaurants with an assist from NTT, which also provides DS wireless service at Japanese train stations, so things should get lit up fairly smoothly. You’d better hurry if you want to join in on the fun, though: the test program ends on December 28th.

According to reports (translated, possibly misunderstood, clearly speculative reports), come this year’s E3, Nintendo could be rolling out a brand-spanking-new DS — most likely very unlike the one pictured above. If you follow the text in a Bloomberg Japan article, Famicom magazine publisher Hirokazu Hamamura says that the timing of E3 would fall right in line with the two-year stagger the Big N has applied to other handheld releases. Of course, Nintendo is saying “no comment,” though we find that’s usually the last thing they say before introducing the Wii, Game Boy, N64, Harry Potter Wand, or Ultimate Doomsday Device.

There’s already been quite a few musicians (and would-be ones) brought into the Nintendo DS fold thanks to apps like Jam Sessions, but it looks like there could soon be another wave flocking to the popular handheld, with the official, Korg-approved DS-10 synthesizer from AQ Interactive now headed for the DS in Japan. As you can see for yourself in the video after the break, like Jam Sessions, the synthesizer is anything but a game, with it boasting two patchable virtual synths with two oscillators each, a drum machine, a sequencer, and a full range of effects, to name but a few features. You’ll also apparently be able to wirelessly link up several systems to play together or simply exchange sounds and songs, although you’ll apparently have to make do without MIDI support. Needless to say, we’ll keep you posted on any word of a release ’round these parts, but in the meantime, you can look forward to this one hitting Japan in July for ¥4,800, or just under $50.

Back in our day we had to use these things called “laptops” to make music, but now it seems like any kid off the street can rock out with a jailbroken iPhone and some Red Bull. Put two of these ADD-addled youngsters together with a DS Phat-toting friend and you’ve got New York avant-garde out the wazoo. We hear Matthew Barney is designing the iconic cover art as we speak. Video is after the break.

If by some chance you still aren’t satisfied with the variety of DS Lite color options currently available, you’ll apparently soon have yet another to choose from, with a Cobalt Blue/Black model now up for order on Circuit City’s website. Somewhat curiously, the site actually shows two slightly different blue-colored models, although we’re guessing that’s due to some image processing shenanigans and not evidence of two different blue DSs, though we certainly wouldn’t put anything past the big N. No official word on a release date just, but Circuit City will gladly take your $130 now and ship it to you as soon as it’s available.

The DS has already proven some of its versatility by ordering food and dishing out replays at Safeco Field, and it looks like Disney’s set to expand those non-gaming capabilities even further, with it now testing a system that turns the handheld into an interactive tour guide. Dubbed the Disney Magic Connection, the app appears to be fairly extensive, including not only maps of the Magic Kingdom, but details on wait times at various attractions, directions to the nearest washrooms and ATMs and, of course, the odd game. Unfortunately, at least in its current state, you’ll only be able to take advantage of those features with one of Disney’s pre-set up DSs and not your own — no word if that’ll change once the system moves beyond the testing phase. Hit up the read link below for more pics of the app itself and a first-hand report from one lucky tester.

Well, that didn’t take long. Just over a day after The New York Times got all our hopes up with word that complete DS game downloads were headed for the Wii, comes word that the big N’s Reggie Fils-Aime actually said no such thing, and that only DS game demos would be available, as expected. In issuing the correction, Nintendo also confirmed that, like other content that currently be beamed to the DS, the demos will be erased once the handheld is switched off. Unfortunately, there’s still no word as to when that service might actually be available, with Nintendo only going so far as to say that it’s coming sometime “in the future.”

Just a few months ago, we received word that DS demo downloads would be headed to the Wii, but if recent comments made by the Big N’s own Reggie Fils-Aime are to be believed, entire games are also on the horizon. According to the New York Times, Reggie noted that “complete games as well as game samplers will be able to be downloaded into the Wii using its broadband connection, and then transferred wirelessly to the DS.” Sadly, no definitive time frame for the service was revealed, but you can color us all kinds of intrigued.

If you’re still teetering on the edge of picking up a DS Lite for yourself, here’s yet another reason to go ahead and pull the trigger. Dai Nippon Printing has partnered with AM3 in order to offer up a new way to get content / media onto Nintendo’s handheld. The system, dubbed DSvision, will enable DS / DS Lite owners to purchase a variety of material through the web, including books, comics, movies, music, etc., and then transfer the files over to the DS for on-the-go enjoyment. The product package will reportedly include a 512MB microSD card, a DS cartridge adapter and a USB adapter (shown after the jump) for use with one’s PC. It looks as though the hardware will hit Japanese shelves in January for ¥3,980 ($37), but the web-based content delivery system won’t go live until March.

Sometimes those rumors are spot-on. Just like we heard, Nintendo is launching two special-edition Nintendo DS bundles for the holidays. The Gold edition ships with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass while the Metallic Rose ships with the Best Friends version of Nintendogs. Each comes emblazoned with the series’ signature logo, “a shiny nugget that any gamer — girl or guy — would be proud to show off.” Right, ’cause all gamers love to show off their nuggets. Available on November 23rd for an undisclosed price, though expected to be $150 like the rumor said.

Well, it looks like those that have yet to take the plunge on a DS Lite will soon have two more models competing for their attention, as evidenced by this Sears “Black Friday” ad that recently turned up online. As you can see, one of the models is a Zelda: Phantom Hourglass model, although it’s a good deal more subtle than the one spotted earlier this month. The other is a metallic pink Nintedogs: Best Friends model, which gets in its cross-branding with equal subtlety. Both models also come bundled with their respective games although, at $150 apiece, those looking for the best bargain will likely be able to do better with a non-coordinated model.

It looks Nintendo has plenty more than just keyboard support in store for the Wii, with the company also taking advantage of a recent conference in Tokyo to announce a forthcoming DS demo download service for the console. Dubbed “Everyone’s Nintendo Channel” (at least in Japan), the service effectively turns your Wii into your very own DS Download Station, with both game demos and videos available to be transfered to your DS. Unfortunately, there’s no word as to when the service might actually become available, although we doubt Nintendo would risk raising the ire of the DS-toting masses by holding out on it for too long.
