Nokia E63 seen in spy shot, minor details emerge

October 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’d never discount the possibility of someone being awfully talented in Photoshop here, but we’ve got to say, the image shown above looks pretty convincing. As you can glean from the logo in the upper right, this here is a purported E63, and according to some technical tidbits scrounged out of a lengthy Nokia XML file, it just might be a legitimate piece of hardware. Early reports show it as having a 320 x 240 resolution display, WiFi, Bluetooth, Symbian S60, a microSD card slot, 3.5-millimeter headphone jack and UMTS / HSDPA. Furthermore, it’s bruited that we could eventually see three versions of the phone for varying markets: the E63-1 for Europe, the E63-2 for suits who can’t have cameras on their handsets and the E63-3 for the Americas. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more, but till then, you can go ahead and start working up justifications as to why this will be totally necessary in your mobile arsenal in a few months.

Nokia survey finds that many Americans work on the can

October 21st, 2008 by

We already know that a solid chunk of Britons use mobile internet while in the throes of passion, and now Captain Obvious (today known as Nokia) has awkwardly landed to tell the world that Americans do too. A recent survey, which we can only imagine was absolutely thrilling to conduct, found that some 53% of working Americans “have been interrupted by a work-related phone call or e-mail while in the bathroom.” Furthermore, some 23% have allowed a call / e-mail to interrupt them while on a date, but that’s probably because 59% of those polled never, ever turn off their mobile. Just think — the next time your buddy answers with a hint of stress in his / her voice, there’s a statistically significant chance that you’re barging in on some seriously personal business.

Mobile browser showdown: Archos 5 vs. iPhone 3G vs. Nokia N810

October 18th, 2008 by

Browser bakeoffs are never without a certain amount of controversy, but we’re sort of into Pocketable’s latest comparison since the three devices on the bench represent three very different points on the spectrum of touchscreen devices. Having used all three, we’ll say upfront that the results are surprising: the Archos 5 smokes both the iPhone and the N810, and not always by small margins — the 5 loaded Engadget 18 seconds faster than the N810. (We did the same test with our 5 and iPhone 3G and the results were basically the same.) Now, that’s not to say that makes the 5’s Opera-powered browser the best or even the most useable, since in our experience scrolling is painfully choppy and hard to do with the resistive touchscreen, but it’s interesting that the hotrodded PMP managed to load pages consistently faster than either the smartphone or the Linux-powered tablet. Take a peek at the full results at the read link.

Nokia N79 gets unboxed on video

October 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve already seen Nokia’s N79 up close and personal, but if you’re just not ready to commit until you see exactly what your potential purchase will entail, you may want to hit up the Nseries Workshop blog, which has the requisite unboxing video of the device, on video and outdoors, no less. In case you missed it when it got official, the phone is a tri-band GSM number, and packs a generous 5-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, built-in WiFi, 4GB of microSD storage, swappable back covers (as seen above), and an unfortunately lackluster screen — at least in our experience. Head on past the break for the complete unboxing.

[Thanks, Steve]

Nokia’s N85 reviewed, called better than N96

October 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We were always curious why a device that (at least on paper) was superior in a lot of ways to Nokia’s N96 wasn’t trumpeted as the outfit’s flagship device, but nevertheless, an Italian reviewer has made us feel a touch better about our previously ludicrous thoughts. After spending a solid fortnight with the phone, the critic felt comfortable deeming the N85 a “very, very beautiful” handset, also noting that it was “definitely the best Symbian [device]” out there. He even went out of his way to recommend the N85 over the N96 so long as you’re cool without DVB-H or a super-snazzy camera. As if you really needed more, he also found the OLED display to be spectacular, the audio quality very satisfactory and the GPS / multimedia functions to be top-notch. Wait, is that the N96 we hear crying? There’s no crying in Espoo!

Nokia’s Comes With Music gets scrutinized, sounds good so far

October 16th, 2008 by

If you’re not in the UK, chances are that you haven’t really paid attention to the teeny, tiny fact that Nokia’s long-awaited Comes With Music download service launched today. Regardless of your ignorance to the facts, the all-you-can-eat music service has been activated for users across the pond who forked over the poundage for a CwM-equipped 5310 XpressMusic. Early impressions are actually pretty great, with critics finding themselves pleasantly surprised with just how intuitive the navigation was. MusicAlly did point out that these “free” tunes weren’t transferable to blank CDs — when they tried, they got a message notifying them of epic failure. At any rate, the reviews are sure looking good for Nokia right out of the gate, though only time will tell if people will take notice and buy into yet another music service.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic just chills with the FCC for a little while

October 13th, 2008 by

The 5800 XpressMusic may be delayed for some people, but apparently, the boys and girls at the FCC aren’t included in that flatly unlucky group. Nokia has passed a version of its first touchscreen S60 handset by the Fed’s watchful eyes, and all’s looking good except for one critical detail: this isn’t the HSDPA 850 / 1900 version. We’re sure it’s coming, don’t get us wrong — but for the time being, this does us just about as much good as a Nokia with a resistive touch… ah, wait.

Wooden Nokia concept phone goes beyond the drawing board, gets built

October 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh sure, LG has teased us with a faux wood cellphone, and Hulger has actually produced one that four people in existence can afford, but this… this is something else. According to the captions in textlad’s Flickr pool, Nokia’s own eco-team designed and created the object of desire that you see above: an 8-megapixel “handset” that appears to function just fine. We can already tell you this thing isn’t coming to market, but we would absolutely love to be proven wrong.

Nokia’s N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition in stock for $493

October 13th, 2008 by

Go figure — Sprint goes live with its XOHM WiMAX service, and all of a sudden, the long-awaited Nokia N810 WiMAX edition pops in stock. Crazy, we know. After seeing this puppy announced (and in the flesh) way back in April of this year, it’s about time Nokia made it available to Americans with the cash to spare. As of right now, the 4.13-inch, QWERTY-packin’ Internet Tablet can be ordered for $493, and unless Nokia’s fibbing, it’s in stock for shipment. Hello 4G, we’re thrilled you’re here.

Nokia shocks no one, confirms N-Series touchscreen handset

October 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey, it’s not like you really expected Nokia to ride the coattails of its N95 / N96 forever without adding in a dash of innovation, right? At a recent Nokia event held in New Delhi, Devinder Kishore (the director of marketing for Nokia India) was quoted as saying that “We will have lots of touchscreen phones coming up, including an N-series device very soon.” Granted, it’s not at all shocking to hear that the engineers in Espoo are already conjuring up touch-friendly N-series handsets, but at least you know there’s a fingertip-lovin’ Nokia coming for you if the XpressMusic 5800 just ain’t rubbing you the right way.

Screen Grabs: Nokia 5800-branding womanizer snaps pics of Britney Spears

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

We’re not quite sure what Britney is trying to say here. It would help if she could be more specific about what she thinks of this guy. If only there was a word she could use to describe him, over and over and over. Regardless, she absolutely doesn’t want any pictures snapped of her on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Who knows where those might end up? Full video after the break.

Nokia’s N85 films rooftop unboxing of another N85

October 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We tell ya, these unboxers are really stepping up their game of late. Easily topping that trunk lid episode we saw back in July, this Nokia N85 unboxing sees one N85 film another N85’s initial escape from cardboard purgatory… from the roof of a building in New York City. There’s no real surprises here — just an N85 twirled around on a video that’s almost entirely out of focus — and the absence of monologue is downright creepy. That said, we still highly recommend clicking through the break to see this puppy on video. Just bring your own tunes, you’ll need ‘em.

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic gets reviewed, coddled

October 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Given that most of the world won’t see Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic until 2009, you may be better off just forcing yourself to overlook this here review until you can snag one without importing. If you’re just too impatient for all that, however, you should know that an early critique of the affectionately dubbed Tube deemed it mighty impressive. Call quality was solid, the OS was stable in most areas, and the display was a joy to look at and interact with. In fact, reviewers had a difficult time finding anything exceptionally negative to say, noting that this is the handset for anyone after a “well-rounded, do-it-all solution.” It was also made clear that this phone and the iPhone were really two different animals not worth comparing, but that didn’t stop critics from confessing that the 5800 packs an “unparalleled price / quality ratio that changes the rules for all phone makers out there, including Nokia itself.”

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic to mature markets: see you in 2009

October 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The Foundations said it best in their 1968 classic, but seriously, why let us down like this? Nokia didn’t mind busting out a litany of press shots and all the specifications one could need to get amped up about the 5800 XpressMusic, but it obviously has something holding it back from launching in “mature markets” before 2009. In an announcement that’s just as disappointing to the suits in Espoo as it is to those in North America and Down Under (just to name a couple), we’ve now learned that the touchscreen-dominated handset will only be available in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe before 2009 dawns. Even worse? Not knowing how deep into next year we’ll have to wait for this thing here in the US of A. Catch our feelings spelled out in video form after the break.

Nokia getting a little “help” with its headset designs

October 2nd, 2008 by

Nokia has produced a number of stereo headsets in the past, and while they were… fine, they didn’t exactly wow us with any sort of innovation, particularly when it came to aesthetics. Perhaps that’s why it’s asking for a little help with the Music Almighty Headset Competition. Anyone is welcome to take one of the company’s vanilla products, like the BH-604 or BH-903, and tart it up using either a simple Flash customizer or downloadable Maya, PDF, and PostScript templates. You’ll want the templates to really go crazy, like submitter Mase90 did for the hideous, supposedly Sex Pistols-inspired skull-and-chains-encrusted model above. Voting is open to anyone through the end of the year, with the top 10 being whittled down to 5 by a panel of experts. Winners will get to see their designs turned into reality — though not actually put up for sale.

Nokia hints at new touch-based Communicator

October 2nd, 2008 by

Every so often, Nokia will pop out a brick-like beast of a clamshell smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard — a black sheep in Espoo’s lineup in every sense of the word. These so-called Communicators even had their own custom Symbian-based operating system, Series 80, until the E90 came around and brought ‘em in line with the rest of the S60 crowd. Of course, S60 just took a big leap to the world of touch today, and that means the E90’s starting to fall a bit behind — so what’s next? Nokia dropped a little teaser during its webcast today in the form of a stylized touch-based concept bearing strong family ties to the E90 and its ancestors, suggesting S60 5th Edition won’t spell doom for the form factor. If it materializes, history suggests it won’t be a mainstream device — but if the real thing can look as good as this render, who knows?

Nokia Comes With Music officially launches October 16, 5310 XpressMusic eats first

October 2nd, 2008 by

The 5800 XpressMusic is stealing the lion’s share of the spotlight today, but the first S60 5th Edition handset out there actually isn’t the first to get hooked up with Nokia’s all-you-can-eat Comes With Music service. That honor will instead go to the lowly 5310 XpressMusic candybar, which will get access to about 2 million track downloads when it hits Carphone Warehouse in the UK in prepaid form for £130 (about $228) on October 16, a day earlier than rumored. Other models will have to wait, though Comes With Music versions of the N95 8GB and 5800 are both planned.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic hands-on

October 2nd, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/First_hands_on_with_Nokia_s_touchscreen_iPhone_challenger’; She’s arrived at last, the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia’s tardy entry into the (modern) touchscreen phone space, and we’ve gotten some quality face time with the device. Appropriately nicknamed the Tube, the device has a number of Nokia peculiarities that could appeal to certain sensibilities, but probably won’t be taking a big bite out of existing touchphone market share — at least in the S60-phobic United States. Let’s dig in, shall we?
