The Foundations said it best in their 1968 classic, but seriously, why let us down like this? Nokia didn’t mind busting out a litany of press shots and all the specifications one could need to get amped up about the 5800 XpressMusic, but it obviously has something holding it back from launching in “mature markets” before 2009. In an announcement that’s just as disappointing to the suits in Espoo as it is to those in North America and Down Under (just to name a couple), we’ve now learned that the touchscreen-dominated handset will only be available in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe before 2009 dawns. Even worse? Not knowing how deep into next year we’ll have to wait for this thing here in the US of A. Catch our feelings spelled out in video form after the break.

We haven’t heard from Clarion since June, and as fate would have it, it was then when the company told us to expect a GPS-equipped MiND in the foreseeable future. Fast forward a few months, and here we have the formal (re)introduction of the ClarionMiND. Definitely dubbed a MID, this Atom-powered handheld is currently scheduled for release in US / Canada this November, while Europeans will have to wait until January 2009. Outside of the oh-so-fresh CPU, you’ll find a 4.8-inch (800 x 480 resolution) display, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a SiRFstarIII GPS module and a rechargeable Li-ion good for two hours (four hours with the optional extended cell). You’ll also get a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a microSD card slot and optional real-time traffic support. The just described “standard” model will demand $649.99; the way-more-delicious Premium version doesn’t yet have a price, but it should be out next Spring with integrated 3G.

On the whole, we’d say KURO plasma owners are pretty stoked about their sets. Those who’d prefer a KURO-branded LCD, however, have been waiting anxiously to hear something more from ole Pioneer for months. Thankfully, the firm has finally spoken, and while it doesn’t mention any brand / model names specifically, we can assume that those LCD HDTVs we saw emerge in Europe will be gracing US shores in mere months. During the first half of 2009, Pioneer LCD HDTVs will be loosed in North America and Asia, and unless plans change, the panels within will actually be supplied by Sharp. Might we be on the lookout for a sneak peek at CES ‘09?

We know, we know — you already know most everything there is to know about Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset, but up until now, the most important tidbit has remained a mystery. The device will be launching this fall as part of the SOCOM: Confrontation bundle for $59.99, or if you just loathe the whole SOCOM series, you can pick it up all by its lonesome for $49.99. Tough call, huh?

Barely a month after Nokia’s North American E71 went on sale at the Chicago / New York flagship stores, we’ve received word that the QWERTY-less sibling (that’d be the E66) has now arrived at the same locales. The quad-band slider boasts support for AT&T’s 3G network, and there’s also a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and all the other goodies you’d expect from another solid S60 contender. Snap it up now in Grey Steel for $540.

Well, color us surprised! Here we have yet another “limited edition” PlayStation 3 bundle, this time with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune packed in alongside a PlayStation Network voucher for PAIN, a DualShock 3 wireless controller and… a 160GB PS3 console? Yep, Sony’s formally introducing us to the new king, which will start shipping to North America this November in the aforementioned kit for $499.99. Curiously, there’s no word as to whether it’ll be released separate from the bundle (we’re guessing yes), and there’s no mention of PS2 backwards compatibility (so don’t count on it). In related news, the “new” $399.99 80GB version is finally shipping to retailers, so you should be able to snap one up in the very, very near future.

When Westinghouse launched its 40-inch LCD HDTV / DVD combo unit earlier this year, we really began to think of just how nice it’d be to broaden Blu-ray’s appeal by shoving a drive into a new set for those looking for simplicity. Enter Funai — the company currently responsible for the lowest priced standalone BD deck on the market — which is reportedly aiming to loose an LCD HDTV with built-in Blu-ray player on the North American market next summer. The company typically brands its wares with names like Sylvania, Symphonic and Emerson, so we wouldn’t expect the highest-end stuff here. That said, we’re glad to see someone taking this very necessary step, even though you won’t catch us recommending ‘em to anyone but the technologically challenged. With all the Touch Diamond / Touch Pro news surfacing for these US CDMA carriers, quite a few AT&T subscribers are beginning to get restless. Calm down, folks — it seems the AT&T Touch Pro is a reality waiting to happen after all. Based on some admittedly dodgy claims and even dodgier photographs, one particular soul has apparently paid $900 for a pre-release Touch Pro with North American 3G. Only time will tell if he got duped, but we’re going to believe that AT&T wouldn’t let this gem pass it by for too much longer until proven wrong.

Call it a hunch, but you shouldn’t have to wait too awfully long (like, hours / days / weeks) to secure Nokia’s North American E71 today. Said handset is now available at the company’s flagship store in Chicago, complete with a QWERTY keyboard and US-friendly 3G. Eager to grab one? Total cost will be $483 (plus tax) in addition to a roundtrip ticket to Chi-town, considering the store won’t ship to out-of-towners (or so we hear).

It isn’t hard to see to perks to Apple’s “one size fits all” approach to software for the iPhone and iPod touch. After making N95-3 (the regular ol’ N95 for North America) users wait months to get the software updates of their European counterparts, it took ‘em another few days to get the N95-4 (the 8GB version for North America) up to snuff as well. Of course, the N95 8GB already had a few of the software improvements, but this seems to pull it in line with the v20 firmware all the cool kids are rocking. Unfortunately it’s not all gravy, you’re going to have to do all the heavy lifting of backing up and re-installing your apps, and we’ve been having trouble getting the update to work at all on our particular 8GB — we’ll let you know how that goes. Still, the speed gains are (probably) worth all the hassle, so fire that sucker up and get updating!

Update: Problem solved, turned out to be a bum USB port on the PC we were using. You may also run into Vista compatibility issues using Nokia’s Software Update app, though we had no problems when we told Vista to front like XP SP2 using the shortcut. Proceed at your own risk!

Get this: the first North American carrier to offer up Nokia’s 8GB N95 isn’t AT&T. Heck, it’s not even a US-based operator. No friends, it’s Canada’s own Rogers Wireless. Just as we had heard late last month, the N95 8GB has officially landed in the Great North, and starting on May 6th, consumers up that way will be able to secure one for a hefty $399.99 with a three-year activation on the Rogers Vision Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing Plan. Don’t weep too heavily, AT&T users — your time should be coming soon.

Yeah, you definitely have our permission to be incredibly envious of someone who is actually going to be motoring about in both Europe and North America on a frequent basis, but in all seriousness, we’re betting Sneaker isn’t the only chap out there looking for the best GPS for intercontinental travels.
“I’m headed to Europe in the near future and will be doing some extensive driving. Thus, I’m wondering which GPS units your readers have found to be effective for cruising on the back-roads of Europe, while still getting the job done in North America as well? Would appreciate some recommendations.”
You’ll notice a budget is glaringly absent here, so feel free to toss out your recommendations from low-end to princely. Meanwhile, you can beam in a burning question of your own by writing us at ask at engadget dawt com — who knows, you might find your very own words in this space next week.

Oh, how the times they are a-changin’. Merely months after Vizio ousted Samsung as the LCD TV king in Q2, Sammy is back on top of overall flat-panel TV sales here in North America. Thanks primarily to a staggering 37-percent quarter-to-quarter growth rate (compared to Vizio’s 12-percent), Samsung now has an 11.8-percent unit share compared to Vizio’s 10.2-percent. Strictly looking at LCD TVs, Vizio still isn’t holding the gold; rather, Sharp rocketed ahead to the top spot in that category and left the previous leader clinging to second. It should be noted that Vizio’s sales are far from stagnant — the firm has experienced a 334-percent increase year-to-year in LCD TV growth compared to Sharp’s 88-percent. Still, we wouldn’t count on the current leaderboard staying this way for long, as Black Friday (and the holiday season in general) has a tendency to shake things up.
