iriver’s gramophone speaker, UNIT2-S, and R1 concepts do impress

August 29th, 2008 by

iriver came to IFA with the usual collection of concept gear we crave. Unlike other manufacturers, iriver usually brings its prototypes to market, eventually, so you’ll want to pay attention. First up is a concept horn speaker (pictured top) attached to an iriver SPINN. The device plugs into the existing headphone jack bringing a sense of gramophone nostalgia to this most-modern device.

Next up is iriver’s latest take on the Unit2, the UNIT2-S, a simpler multimedia communications device for the home. Remember, it’s just a concept, but as envisioned, the working prototype functions as a video phone, digital photo frame, web browser, FM radio, flash gaming rig, SMS/MMS receiver, and audio / video player with DMB television tuner. The specs list a 4.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 30GB hard drive and 2GB of flash (presumably in the base unit and handset, respectively), mic, stereo speaker, and Li-Polymer battery all packed into a 185.4 x 117 x 19.8-mm tower.

Last up is the R1 DAB radio concept (pictured bottom). Again, the prototype is fully functional and capable of playing back internet, DAB, and FM radio or audio streaming from PC or local storage through a pair of 2W stereo speakers. They also included an alarm clock to remind you that these concepts are just part of an iriver dream — for now.

Hands-on iriver’s confusing P20 PMP

August 29th, 2008 by

As good as the SPINN is, we can’t rave about iriver’s newest PMP, the P20 launching today at IFA. Looks like our early excitement about the product back at CES was misplaced. First off, it’s big — a true brick by today’s PMP standards. Also, we’re not sold on the implementation of the SPINN interface here. The P20 uses a combination of vertical and horizontally placed thumb wheels, an “ok” button (why not just press in the thumbwheel like on the SPINN?), and touchscreen AMOLED — a heap of overly-complex overkill based on our admittadly, limited time with the device. The touchscreen was also rendered unusable by menus only accessible by the thumbwheels as well as an incredibly high bezel framing the display thus inhibiting screen touches along the edges. As to the specs, it’s everything we heard: 4.1-inch 480 x 272 pixel display, FM tuner, TV-out, voice recording, and integrated DMB TV option, 80GB or 120GB hard disk, and Li-Polymer battery for 12-hours of audio, 9-hours of video, or 8-hours of DMB in a 130 x 97 x 20.5-mm slab. Expected to launch in Korea next month at an undetermined price — rest of world to be determined.

Video: Hands-on iriver’s SPINN, the first true iPod killer

August 29th, 2008 by

We’ve seen iriver’s SPINN (above between the HTC Touch Dual and iPhone 3G) floating around Korea in pics and video for a few weeks now. But damn if this little 3.3-inch DAP doesn’t make a distinct impression in person. Of course, you’ve heard the term “iPod killer” tossed around for years with obvious effect. But this, this little SPINN with brilliant OLED display and up to 16GB of storage looks to be device-for-device superior to the bigger iPod touch. The SPINN navigation is very well implemented and allows for natural and precise one-handed operation with heavy tactile control — touchscreen too if that’s your preference. Of course, making an iPod killer is about more than just the device — it’s the ecosystem of PC software, third party accessories, and daunting global distribution and retail model which faces any upstart vendor. On sale now in Korea, iriver hopes to address the latter piece of the puzzle as they prepare for a global (US, UK, and Europe) launch in September and October — assuming they can sort out the necessary distribution / retail channels this week at IFA.

iriver P20 media player and M3 GPS navigator headed to IFA

August 25th, 2008 by

While traditionally known as a forum for HDTVs, the big IFA show in Berlin is also shaping up as a showcase battle for Korean DAPs. Hot on the arching heels of Cowon’s S9 Curve comes this, the (re)announcement of iriver’s P20. While we first saw the P20 as a plastic prototype at CES, we’re desperately hoping for a fully functional, 80/120GB media player this time around. The device is still spec’d with a 4.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen display capable of pumping 12-, 9-, or 8-hours of music, video, or DMB TV at a clip, respectively. It’s also likely sporting a SPINN UI judging by that thumb-wheel. Also on deck is the M3 portable GPS navigator / media player with 3.5-inch touch screen LCD. More details on Friday when trade show floor opens its doors.

Cowon’s S9 Curve with 3.3-inch AMOLED touch-screen kills with style

August 25th, 2008 by

Taste that? It’s the sweet nectar of want for Cowon’s new S9 Curve. This 3.3-inch media player features an AMOLED capacitive touch panel display that spreads 16 million colors across 480 x 272 pixels. Inside you’ll find a 500MHz dual-core CPU, T-DMB digital television tuner, Bluetooth, FM radio, TV-out, and G-Sensor accelerometer. All that and nearly two days (40 hours) of music playback from a single charge. No price yet but we expect to hear more later this week as the big European IFA show kicks off in Berlin.

7.6-inch OLED displays go mass production, next stop UMPCs and Kodak photo frames?

August 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sometime shortly after Philips introduced it first digital photo frame — let’s call it CES, January 2006 — something happened to the industry: it went to crap. Instead of focusing on quality displays vendors started tossing in gimmicks to sell their goods. This might change now that 7.6-inch OLEDs are going mass production.

Already, Kodak is rumored to have placed an order for the medium-sized panels set to roll off the lines in September at CMO’s Chi Mei EL (CMEL) factory. That should mean incredibly vibrant, thin, high-contrast frames with 16.7 million colors spread across 800 x 480 pixels just in time for the holidays. While dropping these pricey displays into low-cost netbooks would be a stretch, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few of those 7-inch UMPCs make the move to OLED as well.

Nokia shifting to OLED handset panels? Sure, but when?

August 13th, 2008 by

It’s hard to knock Nokia given its market dominating position, outside of the US and Japan anyway. But they certainly haven’t been (b)leading edge when it comes to capitalizing on trends such as ultra-slim handsets, touchscreens, or OLED displays. The use of those 3-inch and smaller OLEDs is just the latest trend that started with Sanyo, Toshiba, and LG all releasing OLED-based cellphones earlier this year. Now, it looks like those brilliant OLED displays, specifically Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED), has a place sometime in Nokia’s future — when is the question. According to DigiTimes‘ sources at handset panel providers, Nokia now requires its panel suppliers to have, “development and volume production plans for AMOLED panels,” before Nokia will sign any long-term partnerships. While it’s no secret that OLED is the future of flat panel technologies both big and small, it’s still nice to see Nokia on the ball with this one even though it doesn’t guarantee a Nokia-branded handset with OLED display anytime soon. Assuming these whispering sources are to be believed, of course.

Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV landing in Europe in 2009? Too little, too late.

August 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports this morning that Sony plans to sell its 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV in Europe in 2009. That dovetails nicely with a two-week old statement by a Sony representative who said, “I’d be very surprised if this hasn’t arrived in the UK by 2009.” Us too, after all, it’s been on sale in Japan since December of 2007 and was recently caught slumming the big box outlets in the US. It only seems natural then, that Sony would ramp production to the point that by 2009 they could meet the minimal, European demand for a $2,500-ish TV measuring just 11-inches — million:1 contrast or not. Still, it’s all a bit late if you ask us (you did right?) seeing as how Sony plans to be producing medium to large OLED panels as early as April 2009.

Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV spotted at Sam’s Club for $1,748

August 5th, 2008 by

You can order up Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV from SonyStyle.com right now for $2,499.99 and hope that it ships by tomorrow. Or, you can waltz on down to your local Sam’s Club, plunk down for a membership and walk out with the previously mentioned set for just $1,748.51. We can’t say for sure if these units are available at Clubs nationwide just yet, but that’s a comparatively delicious price for those in the market for an ultra-small, ultrathin OLED TV. Anyone care to guess how cheap this thing will be on Black Friday?

[Thanks, Vishal]

Researchers boast of progress towards more efficient OLED lighting

July 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We haven’t seen all that many OLED lighting options, but a group of researchers from the University of Michigan and Princeton University say they could be on the verge of changing that situation, with them now boasting of a new breakthrough that could greatly increase the efficiency of OLEDs. The key to that, it seems, is a combination of an organic grid and some tiny dome-shaped micro lenses that guide the trapped light out of the devices. As the researchers point out, with current OLEDs, only 20% of the light generated is actually released, but they say this new method could boost the efficiency by a full 60%, or about 70 lumens per watt of power. Of course, they’re also quick to point out that all of this is still quite a ways away from becoming practical for commercial purposes, although they seem to be optimistic that the eventual production cost for these new and improved OLEDs will be competitive with existing ones.

Toshiba and Matsushita to jointly manufacture small OEL displays

July 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

The world already knew of Toshiba and Matsushita’s separate plans to barrel into the OLED realm, but Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology is all set to become the first in Japan to “mass produce organic electroluminescent, or OEL, display panels.” Reportedly, the two outfits will establish manufacturing lines in the Ishikawa Prefecture in fall of 2009, with plans to churn out one million 2.5-inch EL displays. Granted, the products will be rather minuscule in nature, with the idea being to fit them into cellphones, PMPs and other handheld gadgetry. Better hurry — Samsung’s pulling away over in South Korea.

Sony, others pitted in a Japan vs. S.Korea OLED showdown

July 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Several Japanese tech giants are teaming together today in a quest to make 40-inch and larger OLED panels for televisions. Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp and others will participate under a joint development project initiated by the Japanese government. All of this is of course meant to help the Japanese companies compete with South Korea’s chaebols, particularly Samsung and LG, as the industry giants maneuver for an advantage over the next, next-generation flat panel technology to dominate the living room.

Sony talks future of OLED, Blu-ray’s chances against DVD

July 3rd, 2008 by

In case you didn’t get the message, Sony’s due sooner-rather-than-later 27-inch OLED is going to be priced for the Mark Cubans, Bill Gates’ and other people not you of the world, at least for the next couple of years. Even with recent massive investments, U.S. head Stan Glasgow tells CNET OLEDs in the future could be seen as a premium alternative to LCDs, but don’t expect Sony to jump on smaller screens while they wait for the technology to catch up, HDTV is the focus. As for the upcoming standard def-streaming Hancock experiment? The first of many, if things go well, while at the same time he acknowledges format war winner Blu-ray may not penetrate to the same level as DVD since “a lot of people may be happy with an upconverting DVD player” — which would be music to Toshiba’s ears.

Panasonic working on 37-inch OLED TV? They’d better be.

June 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

No, really… more rumors of Panasonic shifting R&D yen into OLED televisions? Oh you betcha, albeit this time with the specifics of a 37-inch OLED targeted for a retail launch in the next three years. Japanese newspaper, Sankei Shimbu, is reporting that the OLED panels will be produced on a parallel assembly line at Panasonic’s new IPS Alpha factory. Without offering any specifics, Panny did have the decency to confirm its works on OLED technology — something we already knew about. With consumers and editors alike awestruck by OLED display technology and Sony and Samsung already official committed to delivering medium to large panels in 2009/2010, only the chatter of Panasonic not pursuing OLED as a future panel technology would surprise us.

Sony’s 0.3mm OLED eyes-on

May 28th, 2008 by

Okay, we’re as disappointed as you that we didn’t get to check out Sony’s 0.3mm OLED prototype up close and, um, turned on, but we were lucky to see the thing at all. They whisked it off-stage as soon as Stringer’s presentation / interview was over, and we were told it also happens to be the one and only unit in the world. Bottom line: from what we did see, the picture looked about as crisp and vibrant as the XEL-1 (which is to say, quite). And in terms of thinness? It looks like a shiny, magic piece of paper — which left us kind of stumped as to how Sony can make any display even thinner (but we’re sure they’ll try).

Samsung demonstrates e-passport with flexible OLED display

May 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s been a tick since we’ve heard anything noteworthy on the e-passport front (that’s probably a good thing, truth be told), but Samsung SDI and German security printer Bundesdruckerei are out to break the silence. The two have teamed up to demonstrate a passport that boasts a “slim and bendable” OLED color display within a “polycarbonate data page.” Predictably, the aforementioned display can be used to “provide a raft of information including a video of the document holder.” It’s also noted that the units will be heat-resistant, enabling officials to laminate the cards and make them less susceptible to manipulation. Information about a potential release date wasn’t divulged, but it sure sounds like this stuff is dangerously close to being ready for use.

Samsung’s 82-inch QuadHD LCD: Now with 120Hz

May 18th, 2008 by

Samsung’s stream of 82-inch monsters packing the company’s latest technology continues unabated, this time a minor update to the QuadHD behemoth we saw at CES brings so-outdated 120Hz motion processing and LED backlighting to keep blur and judder far, far away. We know what you’re thinking, its 3840×2160 resolution is no good unless you can write on it, luckily Samsung also has an 82-inch ultra high definition e-Board in its SID 2008 booth. OLED fans take heart, Samsung has reached economies of scale, hopefully meaning reasonably priced (and longer lasting) thin screens are due sooner instead of later. The Korea Times notes LG’s at the show as well, showcasing LCD roll-printing technology to replace the photolithography process that currently births the flat panels on our walls, but we simply can’t be bothered with a company that’s only the number two LCD manufacturer in the world.

Researchers tout spreadable, self-powered OLEDs

May 15th, 2008 by

It looks like we could one day be buying our OLED displays by the jar or the bucket-full, at least if some researchers from Sumitomo Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical have their way. They’re now working on what they describe as “spreadable” OLEDs, which could either be spread or “painted” on virtually any surface, leaving an OLED screen that would be just 100nm thick. As if that wasn’t enough, the spreadable concoction would also double as a solar panel that’d keep the OLEDs powered, something that’s apparently possible due to the “similar, but opposite, principles” that OLEDs and solar cells work on. What’s more, while the two companies are apparently still in the early stages of research, they say they’re aiming to have usable prototypes ready within the next two years.
