AT&T goes wild with texting, announces four QWERTY phones

If you’re into that whole SMS craze and you’re on AT&T, you’re in luck — four times over. The carrier’s gone ahead and announced not one, not two, but four QWERTY-equipped dumphones today, including a dual slider and a Pantech being billed as “the world’s thinnest device with a full QWERTY keypad.”

First up, the Pantech Matrix is available now in your choice of blue or green, with red being added on Thursday, October 16. It slides two ways — a conventional vertical slide to reveal a numeric keypad, and a second side slider for the full QWERTY action. It’s got 3G, AT&T Navigation, Video Share support, and a 1.3-megapixel cam, running $79.99 on contract with rebate. Next, the Samsung Propel apes the i620’s industrial design — but make no mistake, there’s no Windows Mobile to be found here. It also does 3G and features the full host of AT&T services, packs a 1.3-megapixel cam, and will run the same $79.99 as the Matrix when it hits in late October in blue, green, red, and white with red accents. Next, the Pantech Slate is pretty appropriately named — if its claim of being the thinnest QWERTY device in the world ends up holding water, anyway. It’ll be available in late October alongside the Propel for $49.99 on contract with a 1.3-megapixel camera, but there’s no high-speed data to be found in this sucker. Finally, the long-rumored Quickfire — you may know it better as the Knick — will come in November bearing AT&T branding and a Sidekick-esque style that’ll likely appeal to the young’uns among us. It’s got a touchscreen in addition to a slide-out QWERTY deal, a 1.3-megapixel camera (notice a trend here?), and 3G in your choice of orange, lime, and silver for $99.99 after you’ve inked up the dotted line.

Helio Ocean 2 arrives at the FCC

September 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Looks like we’re inching ever closer to getting our paws on the mythical Helio Ocean 2 — the fun-loving regulators at the FCC just added a Pantech OZII dual-slider handset with Helio branding to their all-knowing database. Nothing you couldn’t have guessed here — QVGA display, EV-DO, 2 megapixel cam with video, full HTML browser, A2DP support — but hey, this is The Phone That Could Have But Didn’t Save Helio, you know? It’s alright to be excited.

Helio’s Ocean 2 exposed!

May 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It may not be the largest photograph you’ve ever seen, but unless you work for Helio or Pantech, we’d be willing to wager a few pennies that it’s the largest shot of the Ocean 2 you’ve ever seen. Dual sliders always get the blood pumping, so head on over to Mobile for a few leaked details of the phone that’ll end up sitting atop Helio’s lineup — eventually, anyway!

Two-faced Pantech Duo officially launches on AT&T

October 29th, 2007 by

Filed under:

No surprises here, but the Pantech Duo (split-personality and all) has officially arrived in late October, just as we were led to believe. Ready to rock texters’ worlds on AT&T, the Duo does indeed boast Windows Mobile 6, a QWERTY keypad and a numeric ‘board for your convenience, UMTS / HSDPA compatibility and a 320 x 240 resolution display. The unit measures in at 4.02- x 1.97- x .83-inches, and if you dig what you’re seeing, it can be yours today for $199.99 if you’re cool with signing a two-year agreement.

Pantech Duo C810 pops for AT&T retail

October 29th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We’re still waiting for it to grace AT&T’s pages, but it looks like the WinMo 6 Standard Pantech Duo C810 is now available in most AT&T retail stores for $249 with two-year contract. Phonescoop has the full spec rundown and video hands-on of AT&T’s new quad-band GSM / HSDPA dual-sliding QWERTY. Besides that rough, chubby look the phone also sports more than a few operational oddities including a mysterious “turbo mode” and the fact that sliding the phone open and shut does not answer or hang-up your calls. Fat? Sure, but still trimmer than the Helio Ocean also manufactured by Pantech. Check the video review after the break.

Pantech intros bone-conducting A1407PT handset

October 18th, 2007 by

Filed under:

While bone conduction has been fairly quick to catch on in headsets, the slightly unnerving technology has so far been conspicuously absent from the cellphones themselves, save for the odd rumor. Pantech looks set to change that, however, with its newly-announced bone-rattling A1407PT handset now headed straight for KDDI. Apart from that one unique feature, however, the phone looks to be a pretty basic clamshell, including a 2.4-inch QVGA display on the inside and a 96 x 64 display on the flip, along with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 20MB of internal memory, and the ever-present microSD slot for expansion. No word on what it’ll cost, but those in Japan will be able to get their hands on one sometime in November.
