Microsoft’s PBDA platform makes Big Content happy, should make TV tuning easier

What’s this? A little standardization in the TV realm? Announced today at IBC2008, Microsoft has launched its Protected Broadcast Driver Architecture (PBDA), a new worldwide platform that was made possible by the recent release of Windows Media Center TV Pack. In short, this system enables the “PC-TV hardware ecosystem to integrate virtually any free or premium TV service into Windows Media Center,” which keeps content guardians ultra-stoked while giving consumers more choice when it comes to TV tuning. Essentially, PBDA gives OEMs and tuner-makers the ability to develop and ship wares for WMC “regardless of geographic location or television standard.” The initiative is being backed by some serious players, too — Hauppauge, AVerMedia, NEC, and NXP just to name a few — and a couple have already shipped PBDA-based solutions overseas. Hit the read link for more… if you dare.

Dash opens platform up for third-party developers

May 14th, 2008 by

No need worrying that as much as you’d like to change the Dash Express, you can’t. Because you can, savvy? Announced today, Dash Navigation has cracked its platform open for third-party developers and simultaneously launched the industry’s first dynamic API program at O’Reilly’s Where 2.0 Conference. Dash is hoping that eager devs will spend time crafting DashApps, which would theoretically provide web-based content to consumers while still in the car. The outfit also took the wraps off of the first five partner-created applications, which give Express owners Coldwell Banker Home Search, myFUNAMBOL Calendar, BakTrax Radio, Trapster and MyWeatherBug buttons. Unfortunately, details beyond that were slim, but you certainly tag the read link to learn more about the aforesaid few that are already created.

If you were already curious as to where AMD would be using its newly announced 780 Series motherboard GPU, lookie here. During a CeBIT press event held today in Germany, AMD solidified details of its looming Puma mobile platform, which will be based on the outfit’s Griffin CPU and RS780M chipset. In order for laptops to sport the Puma branding, it must house a Griffin CPU (officially named Turion Ultra), RS780M chipset and a WiFi adapter. According to AMD, Puma-fied lappies will begin shipping at the close of Q2 2008 and will range from $699 to $2,500 (at least initially), but we’ve no idea which manufacturers will be on board.

NVIDIA’s nForce 780i SLI MCP gets official

December 19th, 2007 by

Hot on the heels of NVIDIA’s 3-way SLI system hitting all sorts of test benches comes word that the outfit is cranking out its brand new nForce 780i SLI MCP (media and communications processor). That’s right kids, the self-proclaimed “must-have gaming platform for Intel Yorkfield CPUs” is finally out in the open, and aside from playing nice with Intel’s QX9650, it also supports PCI Express Gen 2.0, 3-way SLI and the new Enthusiast System Architecture specification. Apparently, a number of “motherboard partners” including Asus, Falcon Northwest, HP, Gigabyte, Hypersonic and Voodoo PC are already planning to offer nForce 780i SLI MCP-based products, and judging by NVIDIA’s holiday themed press release, we’d wager that you’ll see the aforementioned items seeping out sooner rather than later.

Google’s mobile plans to be unveiled soon

October 30th, 2007 by

Filed under:

For now it’s not much more than a plan to announce a plan within the next few weeks, but since it involves Google and cellphone networks, we’ll take it. The Wall Street Journal has the news that Google will announce its mobile offerings within the next two weeks, which could take the form of hardware, software packages, or — most likely — an open platform for phones that third party developers can build on. Interaction is the key word here: Google’s platform won’t involve locking down features, rather, it’ll open them up so that they work together. How exactly the company will execute this plan will be revealed within the immediate future: although with most phone manufacturers already subcontracting development of their phone’s software platforms, it doesn’t sound like it should be too difficult a job to muscle in.
