Sony PSP 5.00 and PS3 2.50 firmware updates available soon-ish

October 14th, 2008 by

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has put the word out on those PS3 and PSP updates we hepped you to yesterday. The big news is that the PS3 browser now supports Flash 9. Otherwise, things are pretty much as we thought: support for your SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, advanced voice chat features, screen capture (for future titles), a video scene search, power save mode and changes to the Trophy system and Information Board. The PSP 5.00 firmware gives the handheld WiFi access to the PlayStation store, a full size on-screen keyboard and a sleep timer (just like your old clock radio). According to SCEE, the updates should see the light of day on October 15 (at least in Europe) but there’s no word yet on a Stateside release. You’ll know as soon as we do.

PS3 2.50 and PSP 5.00 firmware coming soon, PSP WiFi store included

October 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sony’s firmware elves haven’t gotten a break since the last round of console updates — PS3 2.50 and PSP 5.00 have just been announced on the PlayStation Blog. Nothing terrifically major for the PS3 apart from support for the SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, as well as some trophy tweaks and power management options, but the PSP gets a WiFi version of the PlayStation Store, with downloadable games, trailers, and demos. No word on when these will actually become available, but we’d guess it’ll be relatively soon.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset now shipping to ears everywhere

October 12th, 2008 by

This is it, soldiers. The day you’ve been anticipating has finally arrived. Okay, so maybe that’s a build up not deserved by the lowly Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset, but seriously, we’ve been waiting ages for this thing to ship. Like, so long that the whole MGS4 aura has already come and gone. Those still firmly planted in Snake’s posse can choose to prove their fanhood by snagging this thing now for $39.98; if all goes well, it should be headed your way in a matter of business days. Over and out.

Sony has a PS3 controller charger, let us show you it

October 10th, 2008 by

Even with today’s wireless video game controllers, you can’t stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you’ll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we’ve seen, it has two USB ports so you’ll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we’ll be all over it, ’cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge — what with the world’s dwindling energy supply and all.

PSP Plus awkwardly unites PSP, DualShock 3

October 9th, 2008 by

With only one analog nub, the PSP can’t seem to nail down a comfortable first or third-person shooter control scheme on its own, but a new tech called “PSP Plus” will allow users to pair the handheld with the PlayStation 3’s more genre-capable SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 controllers. Sony announced PSP Plus at the Tokyo Game Show today but didn’t provide much info about how it works, so we’re not sure if it’s the same technology that was patented last year. We do know there’s a pretty outrageous catch: you’ll need to connect your PSP to your PS3 to use the controller. With only one game supported (Resistance Retribution), we prefer just about any homemade hack to this solution, and if you’re at home with your PS3, why not play Resistance 2 instead? It’s what Kratos would do.

Nyko’s Media Hub+ now available for shameless PS3 owners

October 6th, 2008 by

Let’s be honest here — you skimped by snagging the 40GB PlayStation 3 back in the day, and now you’re in need of a few extra USB ports and a multicard reader. Thankfully, your fortunes have changed since the days of your original purchase, primarily due to your drunken decision to bet the farm on Seth Petruzelli over the weekend. Whatever the case, Nyko’s unsightly Media Hub+ — which adds a trio of USB sockets and a multicard reader to the 40GB PS3 — is finally available, and it’s just $19.99 for those with no shame in adding it to the face of their console. So, who’s tossing a brown grocery bag over their head and picking one of these up?

PlayStation Eye gets utility boost, hacked to work as webcam

October 1st, 2008 by

Remember that PlayStation Eye you purchased way back when? You know, that PS peripheral you used for all of 12 minutes before shelving indefinitely? It’s time to break that bad boy back out, as a detailed hack from the NUI Group shows how to convert it into a working webcam within Windows. Make no mistake, this isn’t the simplest hack in the whole wide world, but the long-winded instructions ought to guide you right through. What are you waiting for? Head on down and get to work!

PS3 Video Store provides more reason to avoid DRM

September 22nd, 2008 by

It took awhile to shake out, but the DRM nastiness associated with the Sony Video Store is becoming an issue now that those tiny PS3 hard drives are beginning to fill-up. Turns out that if you delete purchased video to free-up space then you’ll have to place a call to Sony customer service to authorize a one-time only re-download from your PSN download list. Not too horrible, after all, you can just swap out the hard drive yourself and then migrate all your video, right? Probably not — as spelled out by the terms and conditions of Sony’s Backup Utility:

If you perform any of the following operations after backing up, copyright-protected video files in the backup data may not restore correctly.

  • Format the hard disk
  • Restore the PS3[TM] system
  • Move copyright-protected video
  • Download copyright-protected video
  • Play copyright-protected video that has a time restriction for the first time

In other words, your PS3 (and up to 3 PSPs) owns the purchased video, you do not.

Sony’s PlayStation Home gets seriously previewed

September 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve been intrigued by Sony’s PlayStation Home concept for, like, ever now, but considering just how long the thing has been delayed, we’re trying to avoid any contact with pre-launch fodder in order to keep our hopes low. That being the case, we realize not all of you care to safeguard your hearts in the way we have ours, so we felt it prudent — nay, necessary — to pass along PS3 Fanboy’s in-depth walkthrough of the service. SCEA’s Jack Buser recently took the time to sit down and open up for a marvelous preview of the Plaza, Game Space and lots of other nooks and crannies we’re sure you’re interested in venturing into. To the read link, we send you. Try not to get lost, okay?

In2Games shows off Gametrak Freedom: motion controller for Xbox 360 / PS3

September 16th, 2008 by

We’re tempted to say that peripheral makers are taking this whole motion controlling thing a touch too far, but we suppose there’s no stopping “progress,” huh? In2Games, the outfit that already sought to bring motion sensing to the PS2, has just unveiled the first image of its motion controller for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Wii Nunchuck-esque Gametrak Freedom is explained as being a “remarkable ultrasonic 3D motion sensing technology which delivers performance, control and flexibility far in excess of that offered by existing technologies.” Supposedly, the device tracks the true 3D position and “precise movements of up to four players anywhere within a given environment,” though it remains to be seen how much support it’ll get from software developers. Initially, the controller will launch alongside undisclosed titles that can utilize the tech, but as for now, all you have to look forward to is Squeeballs. Yes, Squeeballs.

Sony admits it could do a better job marketing the PS3’s “value”

September 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Value likely isn’t the first word that comes to many folks’ mind when they think of the PS3 (especially given other recent console goings on), and Sony is now admitting that’s partly its fault. No, it’s not saying that the price is too high, but it is fessing up that it could do a better job of marketing the console’s value. In an interview with Gamasutra, Julie Han of Sony corporate communications cited the PS3’s ability to put PS3 downloadable content onto the PSP in particular as one feature they could do more with on the marketing front, adding that they also “don’t talk enough” about Sony’s “future-proofing” strategy. Of course, a price cut wouldn’t hurt with that value message either but, as you may have suspected, Han would only reiterate that Sony has “no plans to do any price cuts,” and that it’s sticking with its strategy.

Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset priced, detailed for North America

September 4th, 2008 by

We know, we know — you already know most everything there is to know about Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset, but up until now, the most important tidbit has remained a mystery. The device will be launching this fall as part of the SOCOM: Confrontation bundle for $59.99, or if you just loathe the whole SOCOM series, you can pick it up all by its lonesome for $49.99. Tough call, huh?

Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset gets official

September 2nd, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Sony_s_SOCOM_PS3_Bluetooth_headset_get_official’; Sony Computer Entertainment Japan just got official with its PlayStation-branded SOCOM Bluetooth headset (model CEJH-15002) we’ve seen bouncing around since June. Set for a ¥5,000 (about $46 tax inclusive) release on October 30th in Japan along side SOCOM:CONFRONTATION, the Bluetooth 2.1+EDR headset with noise cancellation will automatically pair with your PS3, making it ready for games supporting on-line chat like SOCOM and Resistance 2 coming November 13th. The bundled USB cradle will charge the headset for up to 8-hours of voice. As a bonus, when used with the PS3 you’ll be treated to on-screen indicators showing your connection status, battery charge and speaker levels and microphone mute status all at the push of a button. And for those of you wondering, yes, it should pair just fine with your cellphone since it supports both the HSP and HFP Bluetooth profiles.

Well if you do — and you should — you’ll be pleased to know that you can now pre-order the $49.99 accessory at Amazon. Sure, you’ll still have to wait till November 30th to get your hands and fingertips on the thing, but at least you can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that it has your name on it.

New 80GB PS3 provides minimal power savings, might have 65nm RSX GPU

August 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Last we heard, it was still up in the air somewhat as to whether upcoming PlayStation 3 consoles would house the elusive 65-nanometer RSX graphics processor. According to a curious buyer of Sony’s newest 80GB unit, there is a smidgen of data that hints at a 65nm chip actually being under the hood. By using the oh-so-scientific Kill-A-Watt, he discovered that his older 40GB PS3 sucked down 125.8-watts when idle, while the fresh 80GB edition ate up just 111.9-watts. The findings were similar when looking at power draw during DVD playback and while spinning Metal Gear Solid 4. Unfortunately, this mighty fine fellow is planning to return the new unit after being disappointed by the minimal energy savings, so he’s not apt to rip the thing open and prove once and for all what kind of GPU is in there. Meanwhile, we heartily suggest that someone do just that and put this question to bed.

[Thanks, Khattab]

Sony reveals Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune 160GB PlayStation 3, starts shipping new 80GB model

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, color us surprised! Here we have yet another “limited edition” PlayStation 3 bundle, this time with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune packed in alongside a PlayStation Network voucher for PAIN, a DualShock 3 wireless controller and… a 160GB PS3 console? Yep, Sony’s formally introducing us to the new king, which will start shipping to North America this November in the aforementioned kit for $499.99. Curiously, there’s no word as to whether it’ll be released separate from the bundle (we’re guessing yes), and there’s no mention of PS2 backwards compatibility (so don’t count on it). In related news, the “new” $399.99 80GB version is finally shipping to retailers, so you should be able to snap one up in the very, very near future.

Sony nails down music peripheral compatbility with upcoming titles

August 18th, 2008 by

With all the incompatibility out there among Guitar Hero / Rock Band instruments, it’s a real treat to see something like this. The Director of Publisher Relations at SCEA has posted an update that promises compatibility between instruments and software for upcoming titles; for instance, Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software, and Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution. Furthermore, the team is still “working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market,” though we are told that an announcement on that could surface “shortly.” Rock ‘n roll harmony, baby.

Hacked PlayStation 3 reportedly runs Blu-ray games from HDD

August 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

This one isn’t quite as dodgy as they come, but the very notable limitations really keep this from being the whiz-bang hack that it appears to be on the surface. Hacker StreetskaterFU had no trouble getting confirmation from others that his method of running Blu-ray games from the PlayStation 3’s hard drive was indeed legitimate, but it is only confirmed to work with select “older titles” including Warhawk, MotorStorm and Call of Duty 3. To make matters worse, instructions are sketchy at best, but at least there’s a video of the process working after the break. Let us know how things go should you give this a whirl.
