Video: In-game XMB demonstrated on PS3 v2.40

June 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s here kids, in-game XMB demonstrated on a firmware 2.40 PS3 for the first time. Yup, that’s the clock and date displayed upper-right with a quick hit of the PlayStation button. Sony also tells that the 2.40 firmware update will deliver the Google search bar (like the PSP update last week) and the ability to play and control your own music stored on the hard drive in-game. See that and more in the video after the break.

PlayStation-branded SOCOM Bluetooth headset revealed

June 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Now that you’ve already picked up one of those Metal Gear Solid 4 headsets, what on Earth are you to do with another? We’re hearing that the Blu-ray retail version of SOCOM Confrontation will indeed include a Bluetooth headset, and as you can clearly see above, it’s a PlayStation-branded one at that. You’ll also find a much needed mute button for keeping everyone else out of your whooping coughs, and a bundled USB cradle will keep it charged up when the battle subsides. As for pricing, that tidbit remains a mystery, but you can count on picking one up sans the game should you be so inclined. Head on down to the read link for a gallery of shots.

Life with PlayStation in pictures and video

June 27th, 2008 by

Pictures and video of Sony’s new Life with PlayStation service have finally made their way across the Intertubes after yesterday’s unveiling in Tokyo. It’s pretty much exactly as you’d expect news and weather to be presented on a Cell-powered globe metaphor. Another snap and video courtesy of Digital World Tokyo after the break.

Sony to finish shrinking PS3 chips to 65nm this fall?

June 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to Next-Gen, PlayStation boss and Kaz Hirai claims that PlayStation 3s have done the same with Cell chips since last holiday season, and that Sony intends to finish the process of shrinking its major chips to 65nm with the RSX graphics processor this fall. Die shrinkage will mean a lot less to PlayStation buyers than it did to 360 owners suffering from the red ring of death on Microsoft’s less-reliable 90nm parts, but it still means Sony can save some cash on producing and cooling PS3s — and you shave a bit off your power bill.

Sony unveils “Life with Playstation” PS3 service

June 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Kaz Hirai took to a Tokyo stage today to give us a peek at the Playstation’s future, and he let slip a couple of interesting tidbits. First, Sony will be launching a new program called “Life with Playstation” that will give users real time news and weather, using a globe metaphor reminiscent of the Wii’s News Channel. Of course, since the PS3 has considerably more horsepower under the hood, the globe is a rendered weather satellite image showing cloud patterns, and it also supports geo-tagged photos and other content. Kaz also previewed the video-download service set to launch next month at E3, which will allow you to download or stream video to the PS3 and PSP. The store looks a lot like the current PlayStation Store, and it looks like HD rentals will run around $6 while SD purchases will clock in around $13 when it launches in the States this summer. We’ll learn a lot more at E3, presumably, but for now we’ll just settle for a decent screen shot of that globe interface.

Sony’s PS3 movie download service rolling out Stateside this summer

June 26th, 2008 by

Sony just released a rambling update to it corporate strategy through fiscal year 2010. An interesting read for fans and competitors alike as Sony lays bare initiatives intent on moving Sony from recovery to the “leading global provider of networked consumer electronics and entertainment.” Most notable in the near-term however, is word from Kazuo Hirai, chieftain of Sony Computer Entertainment, that Sony will make a movie download service available to US PlayStation 3 owners this summer — Japan and Europe at later dates with details coming “next month,” presumably at E3. Moreover, Sony expects its gaming business to achieve profitability by March 2009, the end of the current fiscal year. Of course, we already knew that Sony was prepped to deliver full-length TV shows and movies sometime in 2008 via its North American PLAYSTATION Network. But summer, eh? Judging by the increased molecular agitation of sidewalk effluence, we’d say that Sony’s season of movie downloads is already upon us.

Sony’s Wiimote competitor to come as break-apart DualShock 3?

June 13th, 2008 by

So GamesIndustry’s got word that Sony’s supposedly-forthcoming Wiimote competitor is taking shape as something that sounds a lot like a break-apart DualShock 3, which would split down the middle and be used as two independent halves. Because that’s really what the PS3 needs, is another kind of controller. Seriously, do they really think any new device will be greeted warmly by the PlayStation fans they first disappointed with the SIXAXIS, and then bullied into paying $55 for a DualShock 3 (and only because they spent so much time fighting Immersion over the money they clearly owed in the first place)? There’s a chance we could find out at this year’s E3 if this controller really is in the works, but it’s a small one as they’re still trying to help people get over the DualShock 3 hump, after all.

Analyst foresees PS3 gaining momentum, Xbox 360 price cut at E3

June 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Things have been relatively quiet on the Xbox 360 price-cut front as of late, but EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has now thankfully come through and stirred the pot a bit, saying that he thinks Microsoft is set to make an announcement about a price cut at E3 this July. That, he says, would be in response to the PlayStation 3’s steady growth, which he expects to continue to out pace the 360, aided in no small part by exclusive titles like Metal Gear Solid 4. As if that wasn’t enough speculation for you, Divnich further goes on to say that if Microsoft does in fact cut the price of the 360, Sony would likely follow suit with a price cut of its own within two months.

Metal Gear Solid 4 plays favorites with dig at Xbox 360

June 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve already seen some of the product placement to be found in the soon-to-be-released Metal Gear Solid 4, and it looks like PlayStation 3 users are in store for a bit of reinforcement about their console buying decision as well. As you can see for yourself in the video after the break, at one point during the game, Metal Gear Solid’s Otacon takes a not-so-subtle dig at the Xbox 360’s non-HD disc format by asking you to swap disc 1 for disc 2, only to suddenly realize that you’re using a Blu-ray disc, and a dual-layer one at that, which then prompts him to go on about “what an age we live in.” At least there’s no HD DVD reference to further rub it in, though we wouldn’t doubt that there’s one of those lurking somewhere in the game as well.

Wal-Mart throws in $100 gift card with Blu-ray player purchase

June 3rd, 2008 by

Given that $100 at Wal-mart is essentially as good as cash, we can only imagine how titillating this offer may seem for Blu-ray holdouts. Announced today, the mega-retailer will be offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player from June 8th through 14th — and yes, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is included. In case this wasn’t enough to maybe-possibly get the general public to actually pay attention to the format, Wally World will also sell “select” BD titles for $15 starting on the 8th. Since the format war ended earlier this year, we’ve seen report after report proclaiming that Blu-ray adoption just wasn’t taking off here in America, but with a theoretical net price now close to $200 (albeit for a few days only), we can certainly see the masses taking notice at long last.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sony secretly working on a PS3 motion controlling remote?

June 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Considering how little attention the PS3’s motion-sensing functionality currently receives, we’re not inclined to think that Sony’s making an even deeper push into the Wii’s territory, but a site called Playstation Lifestyle says that Sony conducted focus-group testing on a controller similar to the Wiimote earlier this year. Apparently the device was mounted on a foot-tall mini-tripod, and was demoed with tennis, fencing, and paintball mini-games, as well as used to play Quake on a laptop. That’s not to say that Sony’s ever going to bring this stuff to market, but it would certainly be interesting if it did — and coupled with those persistent Xbox 360 remote rumors, the gaming landscape could suddenly be overrun with people miming tennis.

Konami defends inflated MGS4 bundle cost

May 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The folks at Konami have been trolling the forums again, kids, and this time they’re fighting back. Reps from the game-maker have issued a statement on the company forum addressing the furor over the inflated cost of the forthcoming, limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. According to Konami, the bumped up price ($600 for a 40GB version of the PS3, plus Dual Shock controller and MGS4 game) is due to the special material used to create the gunmetal gray system and controller casing. The company seems to take issue with the fact that some are calling it simply a “paint job,” and points out that the run of units is only 10,000, and the package also includes a version of the game with an extra disc of additional content. To put it another way: this is the deal of a lifetime!

Console numbers released: Xbox 360 tops 10M US sales, 9.2M PS3s sold worldwide last year

May 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Microsoft is making some noise today about the Xbox 360’s sales numbers — it’s the first of this generation of consoles to top 10M sales in the US. That’s well ahead of the Wii, which stands at 8.8M, and the PS3, which has under half the 360’s installed base at 4.1M units sold. Worldwide, the 360 is also doing quite well: Microsoft says it’s moved 19M consoles total, and that 12 million people are signed up for Xbox Live. That’s behind the Wii’s global sales of 25M units, but Microsoft isn’t exactly content with second place — it’s making a point to say that the 360 has the ” largest global install base of any current gen, high definition gaming console.” Take that, Mario. Meanwhile, the PS3s doing quite nicely for itself as well: in addition to outselling the 360 in both the US and Europe, Sony says worldwide sales were up an astounding 156 percent last year with a total of 9.2M units coming off shelves, and that it expects to sell another 10M consoles by March 2009. Looks like the console race is hitting the next level — any bets on how things will shake out in a year?

Man kills neighbor over missing PS3

May 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Keith Stoddard Jr.Edward Keith Stoddard Jr. really likes his PlayStation 3. So much, in fact, that if you were to touch his PS3, he may just kill you. Such was the fate of his neighbor, Douglas F. Abrams, who Stoddard believed had taken his console. During an argument over the missing system, police say Stoddard shot Abrams, fatally wounding him. When cops showed up on the scene, Stoddard surrendered and was taken to Land O’Lakes jail (no, really) in Dade County, Florida. It’s okay to love your console, people — just don’t get jealous if it drops by the neighbor’s house for some tea.

PS3 has outsold Xbox 360 in Europe since October

May 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

2008 was predicted to be a big year for the PS3, and it looks like things are going according to plan: Sony announced today that European PS3 sales had topped the five million mark, and that the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 sur le continent since October. Combined with the PS3’s strong US showings lately, and that’s a pretty solid run — and we’d assume things are only get to get better once MGS4 hits in June. Hmm, looks like a few of you decided to take the plunge after all.

[Thanks, Nimro]

Sony dumping off old SIXAXIS controllers in MGS4 “Welcome Box” PS3 bundles

May 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Now that the Dual Shock 3 is finally here, it looks like Sony’s finding creative way to dump off old SIXAXIS stock — like tossing ‘em in MGS4 PS3 bundles. Japanese PS3 buyers will be able to choose from three “Welcome Box” MGS4 bundles in Satin Silver, Ceramic White, and Clear Black, and in addition to Snake’s latest adventure and a Dual Shock 3, they’ll find a SIXAXIS inside. The bundles will cost ¥49,800 ($470), compared to ¥51,800 ($492) for the gunmetal gray bundle that doesn’t include the extra controller, so basically Sony’s giving Japanese buyers $20 to take a SIXAXIS home. That’s quite a deal, but honestly, we’d rather take drop the Jackson on that super-hot gunmetal unit home than have another (obsolete) controller lying around.

Sony’s Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 bundle spotted in Belgium store

May 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Yeah, that fancy press shot has a certain beauty to it, but there’s just nothing like spotting a highly coveted console in the wild. Thanks to our cameraphone toting tipster in Belgium, we’re presented with the first image of the GTA IV bundle sitting on a shelf just waiting for someone to trade their €450 in and take it home. Oh, and if you’re wondering what type of shop places a sweet PS3 beside an assortment of blank media, a coffee mug and what appears to be a CRT television circa 1990, it’s Free Record Shop in Antwerp, sucka.

[Thanks, Yannick]

Fanatec intros wireless Porsche 911 Turbo Racing Wheel

April 30th, 2008 by

Sorry Mario, but your Wii Wheel just got lapped, backed over and left in the dust. Heck, even the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel looks toyish propped up next to this. Then again, neither of the previously mentioned accessories will put a $349.99 hole in your bank account, but did you really expect anything else from an officially licensed Porsche product? According to Fanatec, it took the firm seven years to acquire the license, and it required that the wheel be “the best out there.” We can’t judge the quality from here, but we can tell you it supports wireless USB technology and boasts a trio of force feedback motors, a 6+1 speed H-pattern gear shifter, cordless pedals, an automotive grade leather covering, a key-shaped 1GB flash drive for storing settings and compatibility with Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PCs of (almost) all ages. Look at it this way: it’s still probably cheaper than two tanks of premium.

Furukawa Electric shows off third-generation PS3 heatsink

April 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Remember when you discovered that you could check out your Xbox 360’s heatsink without voiding the warranty? Yeah, fun times. Now, we’re getting a closer look at the third-generation PlayStation 3 heatsink — and this time, you won’t be required to perform any strange feats of inverted photography in order to take a peek. Furukawa Electric recently showed off the next-gen sink at Techno-Frontier 2008 in Japan, and aside from ditching the copper pipes used in the first two iterations, this one has also split in two in order to cool the Cell and RSX processors separately. Additionally, the latest version sucks down up to 70 fewer watts than the first-gen model, yet manages to still keep your precious console from spontaneously melting. Three cheers for progress, we say.
