Mildly frightening Verizon promo video gets employees hype for BlackBerry Storm

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey, bet you’d like to know that Verizon Wireless’ Mike (you know, from Minute with Mike) thinks the BlackBerry Storm is going to “crush the competition.” He also expects his sales team to “take the world by storm.” He also states that this handset’s screen is “built to be the most responsive of its time.” Oh, but he totally neglects to mention a price and / or release date. Thanks Mike. Thanks a lot. Full mind-numbing episode is after the jump.

Maria Sharapova and Canon to give away diamond-clad SD1100 ISs

August 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Maria Sharapova has already had her greatness spread over a number of Motorola handsets, but now the tennis queen is partnering up with long-time associate Canon in order to make five lucky individuals extraordinarily happy. As part of an elaborate marketing scheme, Canon and Maria (but mostly Canon) are cranking up a contest in which five Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS’s are given away. But these aren’t just any SD1100 ISs — these are diamond-encrusted editions worth around $12,000 apiece. No word on whether Maria will actually touch the cameras before they’re shipped out, but a boy can dream.

Elephantine BlackBerry Bold promo kit arrives for Rogers

August 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We understand the need to catch eyes these days, and while Rogers will certainly not be the first nor last to promote a new piece of kit with an obscenely large version of said kit, this one just takes brobdingnagian marketing to a new plateau. The absolutely gigantic Rogers Bold launch kit includes a plethora of Bold flyers, informational pamphlets and all sorts of other goodies that’ll be handed out to prospective buyers shortly. The real question is: who gets to take this thing home once the buzz dies down?

[Thanks, Michael]

Hitachi promotional video highlights Tera Era, effects of hallucinogens

July 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re not too sure how the advertising director that green lit Hitachi’s bizarro perpendicular recording video is still on staff, but sure enough, he / she has been cut loose again as evidenced by the latest spot. We knew the outfit was pushing this whole “Dawn of the Tera Era” slogan with the introduction of its Deskstar 7K1000.B, but this is just taking things entirely too far. Fair warning: the video hosted after the jump contains cartoon scenes that could easily be used by D.A.R.E. officials looking to keep kids from trying drugs, but somehow we get the impression its just a plug for having lots of (Hitachi-branded) storage space. Hmmph.

[Thanks, Frederick]

UFO crashes in Potters Fields Park as part of Vauxhall promotion

July 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

The launch of the next-generation Vectra (or Insignia, as it has become) has been a long time coming, and Vauxhall is making good and sure everyone notices now that its time has arrived. As part of an elaborate marketing scheme, the automaker crashed a UFO in Potters Fields Park in London, and there was even a fence, men in dark glasses that were evidently mute and copious amounts of smoke to set the scene. Just how this relates to a new motorcar? You’ve got us there.

Pleo’s site turns one, little bugger’s price temporarily drops over $100

June 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Although Pleo’s only been out for about six months, UBOBE opened up shop at PleoWorld about a year ago, and to celebrate they’re selling the robo-dino-pets at over $100 off the regular $350 price tag. The promo goes on until July 11th, and apparently all you need to do is pop in a promo code (PLEOWORLDISONE) and you’ll get yours for a cool $235, which is an especially great deal if your intention is only to slaughter it.

Samsung Soul promo video shows 10 optical illusions in 136 seconds

May 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ll be frank — we really have no idea what Samsung’s getting at with its freshest Soul promotional video, but it’s certainly a fine piece of eye candy if nothing else. Put simply, the video shows a maniac darting about demonstrating ten optical illusions in just over two minutes, and in case you couldn’t guess, the Soul is saved for last. Should we have prefaced that bit with a spoiler warning? Too bad — vid’s still waiting after the jump if you’re interested, though.

[Thanks, Joel]

Samsung launches Instinct promotional site

May 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Just in case you haven’t learned enough about the forthcoming Samsung Instinct from our hands-on gallery / UI video walkthrough, Sammy has launched a promotional website designed to give you the skinny. Within the site, you can peer at a handful of press shots, get schooled on all of its features and sign up to be notified when it’s ready for your hands to be wrapped around it. Nothing too exciting, but those with the Instinct high on their list of next mobile to own will surely find it worth the click over.

Intel’s MID commercial tells us what we already knew

April 13th, 2008 by

Okay, so there’s a fair amount of folks out there still wondering what exactly a MID (Mobile Internet Device) can do for them, and while some may scrutinize the facts and still come away in a haze, Intel has unleashed a new 84 second spot hyping the platform’s ability to keep you connected in nearly any locale. The plug trumpets the “great battery life” you’re just guaranteed to get as well as the ability to connect via WiFi or WiMAX. Beyond accessing the web, you’ll also find promotions for multimedia playback and “catching up on your work” — the latter of which we’re thoroughly skeptical about. Still, you’re likely to get a hearty chuckle out of it if nothing else, so click on past the break to get schooled.

Padded lampposts in London not really being tested

March 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We had a sneaking suspicion that the world hadn’t really come to strapping pads around lampposts in order to keep walking texters safe, and sure enough, the whole shebang was more of a stunt and less of a bona fide trial. Reportedly, only a few pads were put in place and photographed for around 36 hours — afterwards, the PR firm responsible for putting them up simply took them back down. It seems as if the scheme was meant to “test out [the idea] and gauge people’s opinions,” according to a 118 118 spokesman, and safe to say it certainly accomplished that.

University jumps on even bigger bandwagon: free iPhones and MacBooks to students

March 2nd, 2008 by

Oklahoma Christian University? Sure as hell (woops) haven’t heard of it either, but they must be the Cal to Abilene Christian University’s Stanford (or sub your fav rivalry here) as they seem ready to pony up the cash necessary to fund the next free-gear-to-students publicity stunt. This time the offering is not only an iPod touch or iPhone, but a new MacBook as well — and to sweeten the deal, current students can trade their machines in for a new one. Your tuition (and tithing) dollars hard at work, OCU parents, students, and alumni.

Nintendo’s DS Lite retrofitted into MacBook Air ad

February 18th, 2008 by

It’s hard to deny that Apple’s MacBook Air advertisement is pretty catchy, and while the DS Lite doesn’t exactly pull off the whole envelope exit quite as elegantly as Cupertino’s latest lappie, it doesn’t do a half bad job representin’. In the spoof waiting for you after the jump, you’ll see a black DS Lite retrofitted into the MBA spot, and while the text, lighting and overall smoothness isn’t on par with the original, at least the music is spot-on. Click on though to see for yourself.

Persuade a pal to buy an Xbox 360, enjoy ten XBLA games gratis

November 23rd, 2007 by

Filed under:

Xbox 360 and promotions tend to go hand-in-hand, and the latest ploy to convince you to convince your Xbox-less pals to join in involves ten free Xbox Live Arcade titles. The rules are pretty simple: just wheedle a friend (or enemy, it matters not) to purchase an Xbox 360 before December 14th, fill out an online form together and select ten XBLA games (apiece) free of charge. The catch? It looks like the program is only open to residents of select countries across the pond, meaning that US-based gamers are seemingly left high and dry. Ah well, we never considered ourselves any good at persuasion, anyway.
