Amazon’s Kindle gets display transplant, Sony Reader acts as donor

August 23rd, 2008 by

Oh sure, we’ve seen a limited number of hacks surface for the hotly selling (but still unsightly) Amazon Kindle, but we’ve yet to see a hardware mod of this magnitude. We’ve always heard that desperate times call for desperate measures, and evidently said mantra is very true. After having the display in his Kindle smashed around 8 months ago (thanks, kid sister…), blakebevin set out to perform an unprecedented surgery. With an unwanted Sony Reader LCD in hand and a badly broken Kindle on the operating table, he attempted to give the latter unit new life with a few pixels from a cross-town rival. We’ll warn you — this one’s not for the rookies in attendance, and even Mr. Bevin (it is Mr. Bevin, right?) had some “nagging button issues” once the thing was sewn back up. Give the read link a look if you ever find yourself in this admittedly peculiar situation.

Sony Reader pre-order now live in the UK, shipping in September

July 23rd, 2008 by

We Americans have had the opportunity to pick up Sony’s Reader for what seems like eons, but you poor bookworms holed up in the UK have been neglected unjustly. No more, as Sony has just opened up the phone lines for folks eager to claim their spot in line the queue. No need in rehashing the specifications you already know — it’s still the same ole PRS-505, just way more expensive in US dollars.

Sony Reader PRS-505 gets spine ripped (carefully) off

December 21st, 2007 by

Filed under:

‘Twas inevitable, really. Shortly after Amazon’s Kindle hit the hands of eager early adopters, someone with a extra dash of curiosity showed us what the guts looked like, and now it’s time for Sony’s own Reader to experience the same. One dutiful owner managed to strip the proverbial spine right off, leaving the pages bare and the circuitry exposed, but hey, that’s exactly how we like it. Go on, peep the read link for the whole set — they always said to never judge an (e)-book by its cover.

October 2nd, 2007 by

Filed under:

That was snappy. Just hours after hearing that Sony’s PRS-505 eBook reader would be available “this month” for $300, the outfit is now selling the product right in its own webstore. For $299.99 (to be precise), users can snap up the Digital Book in silver or dark blue, and you’ll even get 100 Connect eBook Classic titles (and two lines of engraving, if you wish) gratis with the purchase. As for the estimated ship date? Tomorrow.

Sony’s PRS-505 eBook reader ships this month

October 1st, 2007 by

Sony just went live with their latest eBook reader, the PRS-505. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen it but it’s always good to get an official release. Available “this month” for $300 in silver and dark blue, Sony’s 500-followup features a new electronic paper display that is more responsive with a better contrast than its predecessor while offering expansion for both Memory Stick Duo or SD memory cards. A new USB Mass Storage mode allows for a lickity-quick transfer of files when connected to your PC. Better yet perhaps, is to see a late 90’s indie band coming out in support of Sony, eh Joey?
